This week we go on and on about paint brushes... It may not be glamorous, but it is important! We'll discuss different sizes, styles and kinds of brushes, as well as that age old question: Synthetic or Kolinsky? I'll also be discussing some specific brands I've had success with.
Video chapters provided so you can skip around to the topic that's of most interest to you.

I’m so glad that someone is finally honest about kolinsky brushes. It’s an absolute lottery.

And I was wondering what I did wrong, since mine lost its tip, after a single night, although I watched out for all the maintance tipps regards Kolinsky Brushes....

Holy, this video was super helpful. I am new to the hobby and bought a few kolinsky brushes that split after the first use. I searched all over for what I was doing wrong. I didn't realize it was such a lottery.

Ugh, yeah as a beginner I can confirm buying Kolinsky brushes and then they turn out to be duds is very painful. I have 3 Raphaels and one Windsor/Newton, only two are useable and really only the W/N is worth using for really detailed work. I personally use a fude Menso brush (synthetic) for fine details half the time because of it. I really, really recommend checking to see if smaller art shops have the Kolinsky brushes in stock, especially shops that specialize in watercolor supplies. You can then see the brushes in person to hopefully see if there is already some splitting, vs buying online.
If you want to use makeup brushes for dry brushing: looks for Eyeshadow brushes (generally blending) or domed concealer brushes. The black-handled e.l.f brushes are great, and are all around $5USD. Springy and hold liquids well!
For bent tips: I just gently trim with sewing scissors

Great presentation and coverage. A good follow up would be brush care and feeding.

I haven't tried Windsor and Newton, but I do own all 3 sets of the Artis Opus brushes, and they are just fantastic, series S and D are great, I find with the series M they tend to dry out very quickly due to the small belly and bristle length, but I already had the series D and S so naturally I had to get M to complete the set lol

I recently bought the Army Painter domed drybrush set and got the Artis Opus water pot, with 5 extra sponges, separately 😊👍
Also, make sure you use synthetic brushes for metallics, washes and speed/contrast paints; these will kill a Kolinsky.

I have to add what others pointed out - I wish I could rewind back one/two years and watch that video there. I bought kolinskys and they were almost all shite and I didn't understand why. I went to da Vinci, Artist opus and even back to fkn citadel - until I got a batch from broken toad and wn series 7...boy oh boy is this video good. Thanks!

I recently bought some Da Vinci Kolinsky set with various brush sizes. The first brush I used had 3-4 hairs that were split from the rest and it couldn't keep a good tip either. Very disappointing. I hope the other brushes of the set are better. I was not aware that buying Kolinsky brushes is basically a lottery. 😂

Great video super useful. I ended up buying a set of S Artis opus brushes and they’ve been fantastic. I was worried about the quality control on W&N and when spending that much money I wanted something that would be very consistent.

I'm not sure if there are just WAY more people miniature painting these days or if brush manufacturers are just very slow producing brushes....but I constantly find brushes out of stock through any and all manufacturer websites. Once in a while I can get lucky on Amazon, which is risky in and of itself.

I have the same Problem. Synthetic feels "wrong" in the Painting. Can't describe it. The bristles are too hard but i don't "feel" the stroke. And the Hook.....
Kolinsky are good. Own 2 W&N S7. They are good but Not Perfect for me. They are too soft. I want the bristles not hard but sturdy. If the brush bend to much i can Not Paint.
    Didn't find the Perfect brush.
Thanks for your vid! Great content. Really helpful. Description is Safe 😊

Yes, Rosemary and Co make the Artus Opis brushes. You can buy the Rosemary version cheaper without the AO branding on the handle from Rosemary or a reseller. Their dry brush is made from goat hair and they work great.
I guess the first thing I would tell a new painter is that if they walk into an art store and see rows of brushes. Almost all of these aren't great for miniature painting. Most brushes are for use on paper, canvas, rocks, faces, cars, etc. The brushes are designed to hold tons of paint and be durable enough to handle being drug across rough canvas.
You can buy standard brushes for miniature painting, but you will struggle to use them. The adage of "right tool for the right job" works here.

You can't. The only one that is close is the R&Co drybrush and series D brushes
You simply can't buy an R&Co branded brush with thr exact same specification of any S or M brush at less the price, they're completely different. I even have series 33 everybody raves on about them being the same, they're night and day to my S series brushes

FIrst W&N Series 7 I treated myself to was great, but I didn't clean it well and needed to replace it within a few months. 2nd one was terrible, wouldn't keep a tip. Switched to a Raphael 8404 and that too wasn't great. £20 spent and still don't have a replacement as good as that first W&N. It is a crapshoot, as the Americans say.

With the sponge, is the sponge wet? And then you’re dipping the brush with paint onto the sponge then drying the paint off? Could you elaborate how to use the sponge properly? 😊

I have started miniature painting again and loving it!! Purchased my first kolinsky brushes Raphael 8404 size 1 & 0 and Da Vinci size 1 and loving them and feel my painting has improved. I am finding to use my kolinsky brushes a bit more for the finer detail stuff but am currently looking for better quality synthetic brushes sizes 0,1,2 for my work horse day to day brushes. Anyone have any recommendations? Looking at Winsor and Newton Cotman series 111

Sable (farming) is considered cruelty to animals, and lot of minkfarms etc. are now being chased out of business (since those poor critters are very susceptible to covid and also are a potential source for new variants, so a healthhazzard) sable is only going to get more rare & expensive ...
My art-teacher used shampoo & conditioner (I think he used the 2-in-1 variant) on the unruly brushes made out of animalhair. It sometimes works miracles!
