LOL! I also have a Hahn's Macaw (Red Shouldered Macaw) and yes, they have big attitudes! I believe mine sees a big macaw when he looks in the mirror LOL!
I’m a dog trainer, and it’s so important to set up any animal to succeed. It motivates them to improve and gives them a sense of accomplishment. When I taught agility, there was one timid dog that jumped is someone sneezed, but we took small steps and set him up for success, and by the second class, he was doing jumps, tunnels and A-frames like a pro, and he now walked, not with his head down and tail between his legs, but with a swagger with his head and tail up. It’s so important to let animals have accomplishments.

Ooooh I have a hahns/sun cross. Hoping to do free flight. Was never clipped. We walk daily on harness. Wish we could afford your free flight course! She's a crazy flier. She doesn't plan her flights.... she wings it.... just throws a leg out and lands upside down 🤣
I didn't know a sun could cross with a Hahns! I have a sun who LOVES to flop over on his back to play. He's the love of my life. There's virtually nothing I can deny him. I've modified my diet so we eat a lot of the same things. When I want something he can't have, I either eat in the garage or go to a restaurant.

We are working on a 1yo Hahns ourselves right now and man, he's in a total different ball-game from our Cockatiel and Pionus.
We purchased him as 'sort of a rescue', because he is really-really-really-really needy, and his first family couldn't really tolerate that. He was about half the price compared to one you might buy from the shop, but man, we definitely pay for the difference in work lol!
But the main thing is we are about two weeks in and already getting some progress meaningful done thanks to your videos. Thanks guys, your content is really helpful!
I love watching my babies learn to fly.
Seeing them learn is so cool! Mine are learning to hover instead of mad flights.
I was very excited to see you guys working with a Hahn's Macaw. My baby was 8 weeks old when I got her (extenuate circumstances at the breeder) so I raised her and never clipped her wings. She is an amazing strong, fast and agile flyer. It is her favorite thing to do, besides cuddling on my shoulder although by nature Hahn's Macaws are not cuddly, huggable birds but they are very loveable and playful. They have all the tricks and trades of their big macaw cousins compressed in a small body lol.

Love the videos on baby birds,I have a mustache parakeet thats 7/8 months old and these really help me with bonding,my baby is full flighted and was parent raised,is very independent and sometimes fiesty,but with the target training it helps loads x

I understand why some breeders clip babies before they are recalled trained. Our breeder required clipping before leaving his house. We asked that only 4 feathers on each side be clipped & the breeder gladly accommodated us. We have 6 different perch type stands throughout the house & he can fly to each with no problem. He just can't go straight up, which is okay with us until he is recalled trained.
He flies to our hands with no problem.
If you don't feel that you can safely give a bird to someone, the solution shouldn't be to clip them. It should be to reject the person trying to buy the bird. Clipping parrots can cause permanent psychological damage, and should not be done unless medically necessary. Period.
Nets exist to catch a bird if necessary, and baby birds will always fly into stuff while learning so they're built to withstand that.
Recall is not necessary so long as you have a proper environment for the bird (which you should have either way). It's handy, yes, but not necessary
@@batfurs3001 Psychological means concerned with a person's mind and thoughts. Has anyone actually studied a bird's mind? People shouldn't put human emotions on animals.
There are studies such as learned helplessness. But our parrot is far from helpless. He flies to every room just fine.
Maybe a severe clipping causes trouble.
Would think capturing a bird with a net would leave a negative experience. If the bird doesn't know you yet & has no recall, you are supposed to chase them with a net? Really?
@@carolineluckey1559 I don't know if any studies have been done, the mental health of birds is very understudied since people don't see them as intelligent despite most parrots being as smart as toddlers, but clipping a parrot can DEFINITELY traumatise them.
It can make them noticeably more subdued, scared and generally unhappy. Even when their flight feathers come back in it can take them months or even years to trust their wings again. Because their wings stopped working suddenly once before, why wouldn't they suddenly stop working a second time?
Also, yes, catching a bird with a net is less traumatising than clipping a bird. One is very fast and only leads to them being put back in their cage (which should be their home base anyways so it's not a punishment), and the other also involves the bird being caught somehow, AND cripples the bird for several months.
Clipping a parrot is like sawing the legs off a person and saying it's fine because they'll grow back. It is not.
Also if your bird can still fly just fine, it's not been clipped "properly." So your bird luckily won't have that extreme negative experience. What you call severe clipping is actually standard practice

What should I do when when my galah gets aggressive over treats?
Work at a lower motivation level, use larger treats for fewer reps, perhaps feed a half meal before training or give the treat by bowl or by setting it down for the bird to pick up vs take from you directly.

Hello. I am a child with a canaries. My canaries got scared of me after I almost tamed him. He is getting used to me again. He doesn't run away when I'm near. But is scared of my hands. How do I get him to get used to my hands
I can’t find the video in the 5 seconds I spent looking however I remember a video where for blueberry in the beginning. They would have caprie and one of her friends lay their hands flat hand down on a table and then target train over them so maybe you could try something like that where you target with one hand having them walk over the other one first with palms down then with palms up and then try to get them to step up

@@joybreegaming8781 He gets scared and goes the opposite way. He actually starting to not get scared of me and my family but he is scared of new objects eg. New toys new food bowl .
I don't think this bird has an attitude, wait till you meet mine, he Def has attitude, he's about 4 months old now, he does click training and I've changed his diet to veggies, he's also eating eggs, this alone has been a war, but he still has attitude

I have a 39 year old blue and gold macaw. I got him when he was 5 years old. Except for a two and a half year period where he was being housed by a science Learning Center from a school district we have been together. He has just recovered from having a prolapsed cloaca. He had a prolapsed cloaca in 2019 also. My question is, how are these targeted routines helping to train the bird. I don't understand how that is helping to train the bird to do anything except touch the target. That isn't helping interaction in my opinion
@@lisahansen9830 with target training you create a language that the bird understands. Its a tool to communicate what you want the bird (or any other animal, this is also used for training dogs) to do. You can teach many tricks or desensitize the bird with targeting

It really makes me sad that he’s clipped. Mine is not and I can’t think of anything more cruel. Mine flys every day and is housebroken so I can leave him out all day if I’m home.
