Sim, where do you get your gold strands from? I found a place that sells gold foil relatively cheap but that’s a PITA to get into the glass. Betting chunks of gold are easier and probably last longer. Thanks!
Hey Gerard! I get my gold from MountainGlass.com You want to get 24K gold. It works the best for fuming. That tiny piece I showed in the video has been the same piece I've been using for over two years. You cut off a tiny chunk and attach it to a clear rod and boom you're set for fuming. Maybe I'll do a video on how to set it up. All the best! Sim
@@jasmine2501 Cool. Yeah I know the shops you're talking about. Funny thing is I never thought of going to one to get gold. What kind of prices do you find? I would assume gold coins would be more expensive than the small gold rods from Mountain Glass no? All the best! Sim
Hi Matt! Thanks for your comment! I love sharing my glass knowledge with others. I'm trying to make this into my full time gig, uploading UA-cam videos. Let me know if you have anything you'd like to see. All the best! Sim
Absolutely brilliant demonstration of making a glass pipe Sim. Also show how to fume also with gold and silver. This is a brilliant video as always and I hope to see many more from you. Have you thought about doing some borosilicate glass bead Sim as not many people associate borosilicate with beads
Hi Kelly!! Wow, thanks so much for your awesome comment! I've really been trying to step up my videos. Ask my poor wife who I ask to watch each one like three times before I upload it lol. I have two videos up on bead making but I do love what people make with soft glass. In my opinion soft glass is the material to go with for beads. There's a bunch of striking colors that you just can't get with boro. I can definitely make some more beginner bead videos if there is an interest for it. Hope all is well!! Sim
@@FusingShop I think there is a lot of ask for video in all categories of beginner, intermediate and advanced glass maker video and you do cover them all. I feel for your wife. Fabulous video !! I am just beginning to work with silver and gold. I have had issues with the color disappearing - I think poor heat control as I switch between metals and tried to thicken up the piece. I really appreciated you taking the time to demonstrate casing the piece. Does it make any difference if you start with gold or silver? One more question. I make shot glasses with implosions on the bottom. My troubles spot is the when I’m trying to open the top with the lips are. I have had many glasses crack at this point. I thought it was from not keeping the whole piece warm. It didn’t seem like you needed to re-warm your piece a lot. You always make it look so easy. I’m a big fan of yours !! I always interested in learning how people are changing their flame and what type of flame they’re using. I’m glad that you mentioned talk about it and remind me the difference of a reducing flame versus an annealing flame. Thanks again for your time !!
Hey Merry! Thanks so much for your awesome comment! Nothing makes me happier than to see that people are benefitting from my videos. Fuming is tricky and takes a lot of practice to get the feel for it. My first silver fumed projects were either yellow or no fume at all. Your torch needs to be dialed in correctly or it doesn't work. What kind of torch do you have? As far as starting with silver or gold, there are different opinions. I do gold first and then silver. Many people do silver first and then gold. Some say heat the glass before fuming, some say fume it cold lol. Finding what works for you is an important part of glass working. Learn as much as you can from different sources and see what jives with your workflow. Making shot glasses as a beginner is really difficult. Even now I struggle with getting the lip even and not too thick lol. It would be helpful if you could send me a video so I can take a look at your process. @@FusingShop Hi Sim For some reason, my email did not go through. I tried to make this glass and video it at the same time. I can not believe the super ridiculous faces I make while working glass. LOL!!! That video was quickly deleted. When I was almost done casting, a crack suddenly appeared between the end of my casting and the blow tube. I guess I need to flash this end of the glass, too. Since the crack was around my point, I was able to separate the blow tube and save the glass, but it is definitely an artsy piece. I did a shot out of it last night. A golden color liquid really makes the fumed look good. We tried a whiskey and a darker rum. The rum was the most beautiful. I have rewatched this video several times. I'll try your email again next month. Thanks ~Merryl

I use thin gold coins and bars, like 1 gram ones, so they are easy to cut. Usually easy to find locally too.
