    I invested in the 58mm Moment lens primarily for mounting onto the standard wide lens of my iPhone 14Pro. This gives me a wide AND tele option on the "main lens" accessing the iPhone's best resolution and low light aperture at all times.

    The lenses have a soft focus. I have the moment case and the 3d printed mount. I was hoping to capture raw 48mp images with the moment 58mm tele and they were soft. I had clearer results with using the native lens and cropping in. It was a huge letdown.

    I am a long time Moment gear user and I feel that this 2nd generation of lens is at the brink of their capabilities with the new iPhone14 pro max sensors. On your examples it's all very soft when the sky light is strong, one exception with the anarmophic that seems sharper and more contrasted most of the time.
    I would not be surprised if Moment announces a new generation of lenses for bigger sensors in a couple of months.
    Well timed review, thanks for sharing !

      Yeah, my guess is they’ll wait for lens redesign for the iPhone 15 as that’s supposed to be a pretty big change. But for now the anamorphic performs the best and looks good across all the cameras, which was a bit surprising tbh. Thanks for watching!

      Yeah, I think my moment lenses are going on to eBay. What they can offer the 14 Pro Max just…isn’t enough for me to justify carrying them around.
      If my 14 Pro Max can’t handle it, I’ll reach for my real camera, not the moment lenses anymore. Unless, as you said, if they have new Moment lens hardware coming soon. I’ll consider it then.
      But even then…the 15 Pro Max next year will again be better. I feel like we’re getting close to the limits of mobile photography with all these add-ons.

      But like...I have the 14 Pro Max, and I'm here cuz I'm wondering if the whole Moment system is worth it at this stage; and is it worth it to get a new moment case for the 14, just for the anamorphic lens? I'm leaning toward 'not really'.
      But it's not like EVERYONE has a Pro/Pro Max model, I think the moment system is still worth it for loads of iphone users.

    Thanks for doing this. They do look soft. I think the problem lies a lot with these very small form factor lenses. They just don’t adapt well to the changing sensor sizes from Apple every year (anamorphic lenses seem to hold up a lot better). Companies like Beastgrip that use a larger form factor and update their lenses every year, seem to be able to get tack sharp results. Size appears to matter.

I just did an outdoors vlog with the 18mm and it was warbled. The stills and non moving shots looked great. Once I stated walking the environment was wavy and shifting in a bad way. All this was done in the default camera app. Hope this helps.

    Using image stabilization in the native camera app crops in on the full capture area. Since the anamorphic lens causes the stabilization to produce a jello effect while moving, you would really be shooting with a 3rd party app - stabilization turned off to avoid warpy footage.
    Please share some shots or observations with stabilization off. There are numerous folks posting vignetting issues occurring on the left and right edges of the frame, using the moment case.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому

      Yeah, this was shot with a third-party app the CinemaP3 camera. When I’m shooting handheld I use stabilization. But on a tripod you can get away with it off. If you’re not moving, you don’t see the vignetting. And even if you do, you can crop in post production. So it’s not a big deal IMO. I’ve seen that on the anamorphic for a long time actually.

I sent email to moment re: softness of 58mm with iphone 14 pro vs pictures without 58mm in a well lit controlled setup. They confirmed that there lenses are outdated and they do not offer lifetime warranty for the product. Sad to say they do not even care anymore. The 2X and the lens has a much more natural looking image, but too sharp otherwise.
    Shame not to put the 2X without the zoom, because I think it might be better to work with 2X always, and so the 18mm would totally be necessary also.
    12MP is a magic number and the 2X is a 12MP shot.
    Definitely the Anamorphic is the one that gives you something the phone can't.
    The 58mm I'd want for the 100mm effect with the 2X.

      In my experience narrowing the angle helps, but then of course, you’re also narrowing your field of view, so it’s a trade-off. Does "Cinematic Mode" filming on the Pro Max work with the anamorphic lens attached or does the anamorphicism (my word - haha) mess up the AI brains doing the cinematic focusing stuff?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому

      Have played with that some and it doesn’t really work. The Apple magic combines the different phone lenses, and the software does its thing and so really it’s designed for the built-in lenses.

    Have you tested this cage with moondog anamorphic?

      No, but that’s on my to do list. But their bayonet mount should work no problem.

      @@iphoneographers I had 13 pro max cage with moondog. No problems at all though. Just wondering if larger sensor changed anything.

    So basically I need to sell my moment lenses. Going to shift gears to Beastgrip. Their anamorphic lens looks amazing on iPhone 14 pro max

    So it works, just avoid the tele on tele 😮 so tele on tele works with the 11 pro max 12 pro max even the Xs max but not the 13 or 14 PM because it’s 3x lens is soft 😅

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, that 3X Tele is problematic using any external lenses, but the 2X on the 14 Pro is pretty solid.

    • @LouisLuzuka

      @@iphoneographers interesting 🤔
      But the 2.5x on the 12 pro max was useable just very soft but not the 3x on the 13 pro max / 14PM
      And xs max and 11 PM 2x is fine just not great in low light that’s so interesting
      I was thinking of saving money by going with the 12PM OR 13PM
      BUT
      Looks like I’ll skip the 13PM AND maybe go straight to 14PM
      Lots of planning but I love the tele anamorphic that seemed to do okay on the 3x lens?
      Thanks for all these tests!!!

      You might be able to find a third-party case or cage that would fit that and use them. Like the Beastgrip Pro. It’s universal, but can’t recall if they make a bayonet mount for it - they do for their cage, but that’s iPhone only. There’s probably a solution out there.

      Yeah, I would say for casual users the built-in lenses are fine. But if you’re doing anything, more professional, or want to have higher quality results, then adding a third-party lens onto the main camera can make a big difference, especially shooting in low light or if you want unique shots like using a wide angle or an anamorphic lens.
