Lise Mayer literally never ages!
Plastic surgery? One in a million genetics? Pact with devil?
She's alive and yet dead... like Leonard Cohen!
Figuratively, not literally: "Lise Mayer never ages!". Literally, she does age, as she's a mammal.
@@StonefieldJim4 I bet you're a great laugh on a night out.
@@StewartyMac Hahahahah!! He would have me rolling on the floor with stomach cramps I would laugh that much. ;)
I wish Rik was still with us ☹️
Why has nobody mentioned that Mike represented the 1950s, Neil the 60s. Vyvyan the 70s and Rik the 80s? Seems obvious to me.
Dominic Angadi wow never thought of it like that thanks
Dominic Angadi interesting observation
@@That_Random_Bloke Totally agreed, great observation. -Having said that, according to the Young Ones book 'Bachelor Boys', Mike is painted as a fan of Santana, which puts him more in the 70s. Whatever way, Rick is the only personification of early-80s mores..
@Fur Q There were loads of political poets in the clubs in the 80s.
Anybody 'can' represent almost anything, I've heard the 'family' theory as well, Mike the dad, Neil the mom, and the two kids. But its true, they each seem to represent that pretty well. Mike and the fifties is the hardest to categorize, but finding buddy holly and his authoritarian father figure kind of fits into that. But I'm not sure just how far that representation can be stretched, maybe they weren't 'representatives' of anything. But if somebody were going to do a research study on it, that would be a good one to follow up.
I discovered The Young Ones when it came to America on Mtv. I became obsessed with it, and it was a major part of my childhood. I'm so sad to hear these amazing people weren't compensated properly for the U.S. run. In addition to running the episodes, Mtv used TONS of clips from the show for promos, commercials for other shows, bumpers, etc. for years.
I remember it airing. First time around. Ryk and Ade are my comedy Gods forever.
Good to see them looking back on what they gave us. It takes incredible people to deliver a creative idea and turn it into the incredible success it became. Great we have this platform, otherwise it would all be lost. Thank you team, we looked it 👍
It's just lovely how these fantastically talented people with the exception of Alexi cant speak into the microphone. It's just bloody brilliant how they are keeping their thoughts secret during a panel discussion.
Nigel: Please, please, please send me a copy of that "Oh No, it's THEM!" pilot too. Please. I'd give almost anything to see that.
I have a copy of the script written by David Mirkin. It’s not very good as he says. I’d love to see it though.
Health and safety went straight out the widow when they made this hilarious program. And Rick Mayall would have made this chat show bloody hilarious. If he was here with us now. But sadly he left us back in 2014 may or June of 2014. He was one hell of a funny guy.
Thanks so much for posting.
In his otherwise rather odd autobiography, Adrian reports being embraced by Joni Mitchell who told him she dressed as Vyvyan for her Young Ones parties!
I like Peter Richardson with the other three in the Comic Strip but I think Christopher Ryan plays Mike perfectly. Part of the reason why is Christopher Ryan obviously is a lot shorter than the other three who almost tower over him but they have such huge respect for him so on a mature and intellectual level he is much more bigger than them.
They all speak very highly of Christopher Ryan. Lise Mayer says they were in awe of him as he is a “real actor”. Nigel and Alexei agreed he was the solid guy that the rest could be silly. Adrian says he’s a brilliant performer. Ironically it’s Ryan himself that underestimated how good he was.
I wish I had a video so I could watch this in the morning....
Love this. It's like a behind scenes look at the Young Ones.
Have you seen the documentaries (UA-cam)How The Young Ones Changed Comedy, and/or The Making Of The Young Ones?- if not, strongly recommended.❤
Dissappointed that Alexei isn't wearing "DOCTOR MARTEN'S BOOTS!!!"
Only 19 pounds 95p!
She's looking great for 59!
dfarmbrough, she's always looked great.
She'd look great for 39
Those MTV vuys were really savvy.
Someone said the bands were on as a device,so they could get airtime as a light entertainment programme.Probably the same reason the Goon Show had music many years before.Mde it edgier ,though.
"I hope you're satisfied Thatcher?"
I'm named after "Vyvyan", and I picked the name myself (because I never liked the original name I was born with). I spell it with i's but I do have a bowling ball which was mistakenly engraved "Vyvyan".
You legend.
Superb 🙏🏻 just so you know, Withnail (in real life, he did exist) was called Vyvyan
Quite often I wonder why I'm still subscribed to BFI because so much content and referenced content is not available outside of the kingdom. And then they post something like this.
Alexei's fucked. Poor guy's almost asleep.
This show could have been called "The Four Stooges." I loved the senseless violence!!
Yeah, except it was funny.
Brilliant 👏 👏 👏
Lise Mayer is gorgeous.
When it comes to the art of conversation, you'd think that, after all these years, Lise Mayer, would've mastered the art of turn-taking. She talks over everyone here.
this is great
This is great
Poor Alexi Sayle looks so bored throughout this!
Every one went to posh Private School except Alexei , who attended the same high school as Ian McCulloch of Echo And The Bunnymen.
But they're far away from Oxbridge!❤
The Creators? No Mayall or Elton, so one of the creators and 2 of the actors...and Paul Jackson.
The puppets and skits elsewhere were dreadful. I agree with Ade Edmondson they should have just focused on the four central characters.
Nah, keep it weird
That set it apart and showed a surreal world within the show no one else notices. I loved it all at the time.
Alexei saylei looks like he doesnt want be there
'Gino' (Keith Allen) steals a black cab and drives around London all day taking fares...'That's three fifty govenor!'... because why not? Ha!!!
They keep talking over Lisa 😡
Americans wanting to recreate sublime, typically British comedy series like The Young Ones or The Office; and wanting the characters to be "more nice".. tells you how much they're afraid of subversive, gritty, dark humor and cringe. I find that fascinating from a cultural differences point of view.
@@Lazy_Sundaeactually it is with commercial networks but not so much with subscription services.
I've watched countless documentaries about sitcoms and the amount of times they get notes from the network where they want to change a character trait to be more likeable or even recast to appeal to a different demographic that would please some of their sponsors as that's how they make their money.
With subscription companies like HBO they tend to give creators freedom
Missing Ade Edmondson and Ben Elton... and Rik Mayall obviously.
I don't know if you've read / listened to Ade's autobiography "Berserker!" but he explains he hates talking about The Young Ones because it was only 12 weeks of his life, it doesn't mean anything to him, and the fans quote lines at him and he can't remember saying any of them. He has much fonder memories of The Comic Strip.
SPEAK UP
There were in fact three co-scriptwriters to the television sitcom series, The Young Ones, that was originally aired on the BBC Two channel during 1982 and 1984.
The highly significant contributor and very influential third co-writer was Benjamin Elton. Unsurprisingly, both Alexei Sayle and Lise Mayer are, nowadays, rather pathetically, attempting to airbrush history, by deliberately pretending that this never ever actually happened.
Hi Ben!
They actually mention Ben’s writing credits. Have you actually watched it, Ben?
Alternative Comedy is just that. It dosent make one laugh.
That Nigel Planer & Alexei Sayle are as funny as a mass grave.
Why watch something you're not into? Love the Young Ones.
You need an enema old chap
They are comic actors, not standups. I think alternative comedy means they make you laugh at things that are the alternative of what you normally see as comedy.
Yeah? And scrubs is gay
One?
