Landscape Photography - Plover Scar Lighthouse

  • The Lancashire coastline is one of my favourite places and living so close to it, I'm often found shooting there. One of my favourite locations is the very infrequently photographed Plover Scar Lighthouse, which lies just south of Heysham and Glasson Dock. During this video I wanted to bring the location to you all and showcase just how beautiful the place is. My plan was to produce a new image, even though I had been very fortunate to do it the best possible justice on an earlier visit. The shoot is a little uncertain at times but in the end I get an image that I am reasonably happy with and a new shot for my portfolio.

    In 1978 I climbed this lighthouse whilst on holiday at the nearby caravan park. I went inside one of the windows and there was lipstick and other items scattered around. I was 19 at the time. This area is still one of my favourite places. Thanks for the film.

    Thanks for reminding me on the importance of patience.Im working on not bouncing around and taking a bunch of ok photos and work on the composition.Thanks again for for inspiring me to do it right.

      Thanks Mark. I rarely move once I have settled on a composition and I do often watch others move around me when I have the company of other photographers. It's hard to stay focussed on my initial hunch as I often fear that I could be missing something, but my I always let my initial gut instinct rule over the mind. Stay focused and trust your instinct!

    I've photographed this a few times, only really got decent images a couple of times. I went there on new years eve 2016 with my dad and was amazed to find it in pieces on the beach, looking like a badly damaged 3D jigsaw puzzle. I was amazed they managed to put it back together again correctly and get it looking so good. I couldn't believe what happened to it though - surely the only point of a lighthouse is to keep ships away, how did one manage to hit it? A drunken ships captain I can only assume!

    Just found your channel and subscribed Simon. Enjoyable content and great knowledge. It's the sharing of the thought process you undertake that makes it for me. Took me a while to accept that I have 'the composition' in the bag and then wait for the light and experiment with filters and exposure times rather than return with a multitude of less than average shots.

    Thanks, Simon, wonderful video-another English photo venue to put of my wish list! Your patience paid off and you ended with a beautiful image. What a lovely place! I looked at some photos and read about the restoration of the lighthouse after it was hit by the ship-they really did an outstanding job. Hi Simon... I'm new to your channel but very much enjoyed your thought process on composing the lighthouse and finding some " order out of all the chaos "... I think the 1st image at the beginning of the video is the one you are referring to that was done at an earlier time as you were a bit more pleased with, I concur...
    I did notice your shutter release cable in your rh vest pocket but apparently you shot with the cameras timer?
    Love the camera, I'm jealous!

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  6 років тому

      Hello William, glad you could join us and to have you contributing. The shutter release you refer to is my external microphone lead. I do have a shutter release but generally I use two second timer and mirror lock up for most of my landscape shots. I tend to use the shutter release when timing is more critical than two seconds such as when photographing plants or insects on a windy day.

      I haven't either yet. You have to be careful there or anywhere when out in Morecambe bay as the tide comes in faster than you realize. It comes in faster than a running horse in places. The Last time I was at that lighthouse the water rose from where it looks to be in the video to past my knees in less than fifteen minutes.
      Have you taken any of the sunset from Heysham or Morecambe yet? From our location it sets over Blackcombe and can get some stunning images as the sky always seems to catch also.

      Stuart Fitton; Hi Stuart
      Yes you have some really nicely composed images. I am familiar with Skippool Creek and had considered making a film there. You should use RAW if you are not already and consider looking into processing using luminosity masks. I could be wrong; are the processed as HDR images?

    • @stuartfitton8219
      @stuartfitton8219 6 років тому +1

      I always shoot in raw & post process in lightroom cc, or classic as its just changed to, with a bit of nik tools thrown in, i am just starting to get to grips with photoshop cc, its a bit challenging to say the least, but with so many teachers on you tube, it shouldnt take too long, its just some of those guys assume you know where all the buttons and short cuts are, i will check out luminosity masks though, am game for a challenge. Cheers. Stu. :)

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  7 років тому

      Hi Russ, be patient, stick at it and you will. Desperation and frustration are key to producing great images, so you already have that at least! It's a wonderful hobby and every step is part of your journey, which you will look back on with fondness. The places it takes you and the people you meet along the way all define you as a photographer. I've been at it for around 30 years now and loved every minute of it. If it helps, desperation and frustration are still a big part of my photography, as I too have many bad days! I just don't give up and am always thinking about that next great shot!
