Great looking video! There are plenty of games that use crank + A,B buttons. For those I'd recommend placing Playdate deeper into your left hand and pressing the buttons with left hand's thumb while operating the crank with right hand. While unconventional - it is actually more comfortable in the long run.
I can't put mine down. I have no idea why but Generations is the game that really addicted me. I don't normally like puzzle games but it's SO GOOD! I also love Crank Tanks, which has great graphics and unbelievable terraforming physics. If you are on the fence and have the loot you should get one!
2/2 with the great videos man you’re killing it. I had no idea what this thing was but you taught me a lot in this. Very interesting little device. Keep up the good work friend! :)
For somebody that lives outside of the US, the price of it comes to slightly over double (shipping, taxes, customs, vat, and so on)... Hope at least they would have distribution centers around the world, to reduce these taxes, even the $200 price tag its a bit too much for it... but more than double, cannot justify that sadly.
It's a really fun device If i do say so myself, the crank is really sturdy and easy to use, but as you said, it may take you time to feel comfortable with it
"Is the crank a gimmick?" It is what you make it. (And by you I mean the devs) If they managed to keep one upping themselves and come consistently with new ideas, it will feel like a transformative experience. Otherwise, it will be what people call "a gimmick". Every novel control scheme starts like that.
To me the playdate is the perfect complementary device: Its a perfect platform for small developers doing intresting things while working great where my other devices do not, like on train rides with stark sunshine. If you only play inside in dim rooms the screen is not optimal, but for me I use my phone/laptop in these environments and the playdate when I'm out and about. Even if they make an updated version I hope they only add a backlight if it does not compromise the crispness of the screen or make it an option.
There's tons of retro handheld consoles that get bright enough just fine and are perfectly viewable in pretty much any condition outsight of the sun directly shining on it on a very sunny day. This device is a neat little gimmick, but honestly I think it's pretty much a niche among niche. It'll be relevant as long as it has a passionate community, but it's so niche the system has a lifespan of just a few years. Especially with that price tag.
Niche for sure. It’s plenty fun for what it is but I wouldn’t expect it to ever approach anything near main stream. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
@@thenonexistinghero Precisely because there are already tons of handheld consoles with standard OLED/LCD screens I love that there is an option with a transflective 1-bit screen from SHARP, as I really adore this kind of display. Like the Wii it will probably never be a "long term success", but for the time being I love the creativity out of the community and I think there is enough exploration of the consoles constraints and abilites left to have the community going for a good bit.
Part of me wonders if there ever even will be an updated version. Panic is a software company and they aren't making much money on this. The device is a 10 year long passion project that all started with that tiny 1-bit display everyone has a problem with. Unfortunately I think when the playdate's life ends it will have no offspring...
I was quite interested in getting a playdate, but unfortunately the lack of a backlight and astronomical shipping fees put it just over the edge of worth it for me.

I agree, the idea is fantastic. The platform has attracted a lot of developers and I think some truly fun games have been made. I'm curious to see if they do a second hardware iteration.
@@matt_HM absolutely I did! As for if it's worth it, I couldn't say. Personally I found it to be one of the absolute top product display imagery that I've seen. Being on the preorder list since a month or two back, something that irks me is that there seems to be a lot of "huh, that's neat" - type of games, but no real shining stars that would make people gaming on normal systems want to buy a playdate for the "exclusive" games. Like BotW for switch, oe Journey for the PS3. I suppose the financial incentive of the playdate game market and audience will never quite get there. Bit of an off tangent rant there... Anyway, you definetly seem to have talent for photography and lighting!
Thanks again! From what I've played thus far it does feel like a bunch of fun, quirky indie games. I got a similar vibe from the WarioWare games. Still looking forward to playing more, but, you're right, there likely won't be a game that defines itself as a console seller on its own.
Hey everyone! Thanks for checking out my second video!
Let me know what you think of the Playdate and if you've picked on up!
I love this
Thanks!!

Thanks! I’ll definitely give that a try!!
Nice video! Crank seems awkward more than anything. Big jack in the box vibes

I’ll check those games out!!
Thank you for taking the time to make such a great video and sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for the kind words!!
Your videos are so good!! I feel so lucky by discovering your channel.
Thanks so much! Glad you liked em!
Phenomenal video editing for such a small channel.
Thanks! Hope I earned your sub!
Not only the quality of the video is superior, but what you said is even more impactful. I've subbed while I'm waiting in Group5 for my Playdate.
Thanks for the support!! 🙏

Yeah that's a bummer. It's a fun little device but that's a pretty steep price increase.
your production values are quite well done, and you seemed to have a very honest review.
Subbed
Thanks for the support!!
OMG SUCH A GOOD VIDEOO. Honestly though it really is great quality, keep it up, Matt!
Thanks for the kind words!! I’m working on the next one!

It’s definitely fun! I look forward to seeing more developers come up with creative ideas.
Thanks for watching!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
Great video!
Thanks for checking it out!!

Excellent work. A pleasure to watch and listen to.
Thanks!! 🙏
I preordered one of these in 2020 and am still waiting for mine to ship. The wait is very......annoying.
Oh wow! That’s a long time!! What group are you in?
Great video!
Thanks for the kind words!!
Awesome channel dude, love it.
Thanks!!! Hope to have some more content soon!

It’s definitely one of the most portable devices I own! I too would hope any new iteration doesn’t lose the positive aspects of the current device.

It’s a fun little device but I can totally understand wanting to wait for an improved iteration. Thanks for watching!

Valid points but if it's not nostalgia then the grey scale screen doesn't work for me. Not backlit and LCD, let looks like eink
Matt! Stellar video 🥰
Here I am again! Loving the work!
Haha thanks! Welcome back! I gotta get the next video out soon!
After a year, do you recommend getting one?
Yep! Still recommend
its a good idea but... the device is too small and its tooo damn expensive.

Scene design and lightning for the videography is crazy. Well done. Nice FS book color matchning too! 🟨
Thanks!! Hope you enjoyed the video! Sometimes I wonder if it's worth the effort lol.
