Interesting. I’ve shot coyotes at 300 yards with my 14.5” bcm and it dumped it. 50g vtip blew a hole the size of a golf ball out the back. Granted I shot that with a Nightforce 2.5-10, not a night vision scope. I could also toss 77g black hills and be very confident to 400 yards or more.

The .243 has been my favorite hunting cartridge since I was a kid. Got an old Mossberg for Christmas when I was 10 and never had a problem bringing down whitetail. I'm very interested in this build since it's only the second AR-10 I've seen in this caliber. CRS Firearms had a build video a couple of years ago as well. Thanks for the info!
Your set up should be dependent upon your mission. Car gun, or in an urban environment? SBR makes sense. The hills of west Virginia? The M1 Garand might still have some use.
Areo precision lower, magpul prs gen 3 with Rise trigger mated to a 22 inch Bison Armory heavy 4 groove 10 twist in 6.8 SPC. Not good for stalking but bullet ranges from 85 gr to my hand loaded 130gr Berger Classic Hunter (B.C. .490 G1 @ 2600 fps) does a little of everything I need it to. I split the difference between AR-15 and AR-10. Sweet 243 you got.
In that caliber, that carbon fiber barrel is going to give you serious heat shift issues after less than 5 rounds. With it being semi auto, I'd prefer a steel barrel, but your weight concerns with the AR10 are very valid. They can get really heavy, really fast.
@@perrytilton5221 at room temp, sure. When you start dealing with the heat you see in rifle barrels, you're going to have problems. Go look up some carbon fiber heat shift issues.
Very nice build, as mentioned everything has it's place. I run a 20" 6.5 grendel myself with a silencerco omega on the ASR mount and it's a slightly heavy build (around 16lbs with everything on it, the heavy profile 416ss barrel doesn't help on the weight side lol). But it settles in nice and requires conscious effort to move it off target. I definitely wouldn't want to room clear with it, but with the can off it would be maneuverable enough to make do.
I've been a fan of 300blk and subsonics for so long but I'm really invested in higher velocity AP rifles now. If I want to clear a house I would use a shotgun, or a pistol. It's not particularly hard to figure out why.
Depends on your situation. Soon I'm moving back to a semi urban . And it's true for most. These videos show you capabilities most can't or should be utilizing. 24inches plus suppressor is just unruly. And if shtf why are u hunting at night cause you definitely not iding a person.
Honestly this thing makes no sense to me. A gun that you never plan on shooting past 400 yards but you also feel a 24” barrel with a long range round? If you were shooting further the rest would be justified but not at 400 imo
Kinda makes sense to me; Trying to keep ballistics as flat , weather resistant and violent as possible in a specific target range. Normal 5.56 wouldn't be very effective at the range he's shooting at , wouldn't be a very humane kill either, plus any wind at those "long" distances would move a 55 grain a lot. I don't know much about the caliber he's shooting but it looks like it's about the same grain as a normal 5.56 just with 700+ fps, a varmint round on steroids.
You only need a cqb rifle for clearing rooms if you are the attacker! Hence why its so dangerous 😳 the defender always has castle doctrine on his side....if im on def3nse in my home ill get the first shots, so i want the heavy bastard in my hands! 😂
@@andycraig6905 I have a DD MK18....and my Zastava AK is still my home defense go to. Add some simple night vision to the home field advantage. That's a nasty equation to overcome.
The reason the "(self-) defense community" is not following what you're doing, is because they're two COMPLETELY different scenarios. Unless you're nesting on top of your roof 24/7, with a property barrier 300 meters out from your door AND a line of sight to said barrier... your point of engagement for a defense situation is far less. You're talking about engaging a four legged animal. Defense engagements are often reactive, within closed quarters, and surrounded by soft assets. Would this be a great rifle to have? Yes... 'cause once youre done with dispatching the immediate threat, you can take care of what may be waiting outside, as well. Is it a "defense rifle"? Unless your need for "defense" is defending an established position with a point of engagement that doesn't require you to function in tight quarters... sure.... but that's simply not the case for 99% of "defense" engagements.
AR pistol in .300BLK to me makes sense for home defense. (I wont go shorter than 10" though). AR15 with 14.5-16" barrel is the all-around rifle for me. AR10 in 6.5crdmr is the extended range rifle for me. but I like the thinking for the night setup, and love the laser accuracy. checked the BC of .243, wow! never really looked at this round before.
I agree. I’ve shot my 16” 7.62 AR out to 850. And it was doable. Hit a 18” steel plate It’s a solid 300 yard gun for sure. Then 308 is definitely my go to beyond that.
Lets get into a phone booth and shoot it out. You can use your 24 inch barrel and i will use my 8 inch .458 socom. Lol all jokes aside it is good to have rifles configured in many different ways. I have PDWs, SBRs, SPRs, and full size rifles. That way i can get into all kinds of shenanigans. I agree with you on the fact that in most situations an actual long gun in a substantial caliber is the way to go.
Love this video, yes you can make shots at 500+ with a 5.56 but its not very effective and it's difficult to do. Sometimes you really dont know your distance and that's where flat shooting cartridges come in.
The military should have went with the necked down .308 in the first place. Smart choice of rifle. But, this is the comment section after all so I need to 1 up by telling you I put my thermal scope on my 50 BMG and hired a Nepalese Sherpa to carry it for me. He's on a leash to so I can yank him to me as needed. But serious question, I know my AR-10 in ,308 is a tank, but if a guy could lug it with a thermal on board and a 20 inch barrel, that would get me close yes? I realize its not as fast nor as flat, but out to 400 yards its still effective for me. I mean if the gorillas we call SAW Gunners can carry what they do, its not unfathomable right? I use my 7.5 300 blackout suppressed sub gun for home defense only inside my home. Which has never happened haha. But if it does, my hearing will be preserved.
1200fps slower.. unless you run 130/140gr. But still slower. I'm hoping the DPMS G2 will get a .243 upper options personally. More power than 5.56, and similar recoil, sounds great to me.
personally im not luggin around a 20-24 inch barrel lol. 16 inch is a great long range length with ammo types now. i dont go lower than 13.9 or 14.5 now though. anything outside a 16inch ar im taking a 18inch 308
During my time in the Army, my first AR style rifle was the M16A4 which had a 20" barrel and when I was given the new M4 with a 14.5" barrel, the 300 meter target that I could hit easily with the M16 I struggled a little with that M4 carbine. So taking that into account for small game I built a 20" 224 Valkyrie shooting 75gr rounds and when asked what length barrel for long range I tell them anything 16" or longer. Currently looking into different larger cal rifle builds.
I appreciate the build and the purpose of the build but personally I would prefer a bolt action in 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor for longer night range. If we were talking hogs at night I think 7.62x39, 300 blk or 308 semi auto or bolt gun would perform better on bigger animals.
Nice build. That first kill shot was insane. Solid unit for sure. I have a lot of guns but long range precision isnt my strong point at this point but I’m building a 8.6 black out to compensate. I feel like that’s my best option at this point. Semi auto/ short barrel /1000yard capability and very accurate to boot. And suppressed and still shorter than your set up. I feel like it’s the best of both worlds all in one package. I may be wrong. But I’m gona find out.
Due to the 8.6s unreal twist rate(1:3) out past 3-400 yards it tends to spin so much it affects the flight pattern. I would be interested in seeing how people adapt tho
Yeah, from a niche predator hunting viewpoint an SBR sucks. For general purposes, they're great. Also less common cartridges aren't the best idea for combat or survival situations; especially as an average civilian.
Think of it like silverware. Everything has a reason. Have a couple of them all and you’ll be just fine. Have just one and you will be shorthanded. And if you’re in a situation where the world is ending that 243 ammo is going to be really hard to come by. Great to have it all alone. I’ll keep the 556. Plenty of you, especially if I run out I can just switch to 233.
My favorite combo is my LAR-15-A2 with an Electro reproduction scope and a 20 inch barrel, and 77 grain ammo. At 300 yards it is more than capable, and only has around 8 inches of drop, while still letting me plink around with the 55 and 62 gr that I can find at the local gun stores.
While this video is great. 3-400yrd shot out of an 16” 5.56 is more than doable and with soft point is enough to be lethal for something small like a coyote.
Use case is relevant, always. I can't wait for the senex arms bullpup kit to drop so I can build some long barrel stuff in a short package. I'd be cool with something like a POF, G2 or SFAR in .243 if built right.
I wish someone made a replacement barrel for my Browning Bar Match 308W (FNAR in the States) in 243W (or 7mm08). It´s only hold by two nuts, easy to change even in field.
When you say that your rifle in 5.56 wasn't capable of taking a Cayote @ 300yrds. Were you referring more to the limitation of your optic or the cartridge? Because with my HODGE 12.5 I can comfortably take coyotes with Mk262/SMK 77gr OTM's.
What you “can” do and “can’t” do is up for debate. In daylight? Sure. With thermal? Not as easy. Also in the northeast coyotes are smart. West, they’re stupid. If you miss here, you educate. We don’t want to take that risk. We also don’t have time to adjust optics, so you need maximum POA/POI. A 243 does that better than a 556 ever will. But we also do use 16” 556’s for predators. This is just one build overview. 👊
The only thing I have to say, is that velocity doesn’t determine needed twist rate, length of projectile does, the longer the projectile the faster you need to spin it to be stable. Also, I like .270Win, but .243win is also very good.
.243 is not just a youth rifle. It's a good all rounder. Never had one in semi auto, not a bad idea at all. Probably 18", but, haven't ran all the numbers.
I completely agree with you on the advantages of a longer barrel. However I think that a bolt action has significant advantages: like not loosing spent brass in the dark because you want to reload.
When a family of 5-6 coyotes comes in to your position having a semi-auto will make a big difference, also he did mention that he doesn't want to teach the coyotes in a calling situation. Better to kill them all or don't kill any for the success of future calling in that area.
There’s a difference between plinking man sized targets on a controlled range with a 556 vs sending a round into complete darkness with a ton of variables. We don’t shoot 556 guns that far at night for a multitude of reasons even though we “could”.
"on setting 4, it jams. on setting 6, it jams" agree with a lot that is said in this video, but finicky rifles don't tend to do too well in wartime scenarios.
In all honesty I put it on daddy’s credit card, (cause I didn’t have one then) and immediately handed him the cash from mowing yards and painting houses from the past two summers. Most people don’t understand self control and how to save for what you want. Don’t project that mentality on me cause it don’t exist here.
Me, personally, I do not get to have the experiences with my father that I would like to have. He can't own a firearm due to legal issues. As well as that, nobody else in my family bothers to take me hunting. I'm now 15 and I have never been able to go hunting with anyone. Life's rough, man.
I build a 220 swift ar10. 24 inch barrel as well, same idea as yours with getting the max out of that cartridge. Where it failed, was the design of the cartridge only allowed me to load 4 to 5 rounds at best in the magazines. So now I'm stuck with a 5 round semi yote gun. I'm gonna test it for sure, but I'm irritated my capacity is only 5 rounds. I run a agn rattler thermal, amazing optic. Had it on my 204 ar15 and I was guarding a cow feed lot from yotes during calve season. I killed 17 yotes within 2 weeks, and one night I got 5 yotes within a couple hours. The barrel length is 18 inches. Able to manipulate in the truck just fine. Farthest shot my buddy took with it was ranged to 370 ish yards from the truck to the fence line. We believe my buddies son made an even further shot based off the location of the truck to the water pivot the yote was shot near. Can't confirm though. I love predator hunting, and it'd inspiring me to make more rifles in different cartridges, 6mm arc and 6mm creedmoor being the next. 243 win would be fun since you can get serious velocities with the vmax bullets, also since it has a good weight for windy situations. The 22 cheetah would be interesting, however the wildcat cartridges are hard to find brass, and take forever to form fit or adjust in dies. As for sbrs........theyre cool.....they work...ill pick a 16inch all day though.
Got to admit, MANY points made that has made me reconsider my ar pistol vs my AR 10 for use around my rural property.... my .308 just hits harder out at my 200+ yard area I own.......am considering an AR 10 in .243 now......any budget-friendly suggestions? Am looking at the Great Lakes Firearms models....
I can agree with one thing; that 5" 5.56 is just retarded, just because you can doesn't mean you should. There's zero practical application for an ar like that which probably gets like 1800 fps and pours 85% of the unburned powder out the muzzle😂. It's probably good for about 12yds and it'll kill for sure, put a fast tiny lead chunk through flesh and its deadly no doubt, but you're really just wasting 5.56 at that point. On another note it's not that sbr's are not practical anymore they're just fir entirely different needs than 400yd coyote shots. The rifle should be built for it's intended purpose. A 10.3" and 24" are both fantastic options, just not interchangeable options. I think I'm ready to advance past another 5.56 and go .308. Ya I've heard 6.5 and 6.8 is "better" but .308 is still pretty deadly and probably cheaper and easier to find, right? Besides I highly doubt I'm ever going to know what hitting a 1000yd shot is like
I have a Molot Vepr in 243 Winchester with a 20.5 barrel. It loves 87-90 grain bullets. I also have a Ruger Precision in the same caliper. It is extremely accurate. Brass and bullets are affordable.
Dude has a huge chip on his shoulder. You don’t need a rifle like that to shoot out to 400 at night. It’s nice but not necessary. Also as mentioned, defensive shooting is 99% 30yds and in hence more common SBRs in 10.5-14.5. This could have been a better video if they just lead off with how neat of a rifle it is and what you gain by having a rifle like this, and using hunting as a practical use is pretty cool instead of it being a safe queen. Don’t care about the back story and the high horsing.
Yeah.. I have no love for SBRs. I'm currently building a 300 blackout and.. it's with a 16in barrel. It's a slower round.. so I need all the speed it can gather.
Want a good read??? Try to find The Accurate Rifle by Warren Page it's an older book but he was a benchrest shooter who helped develope the .243, it will make you a believer.
People talk shit about varmint rounds but this .243 can take a creature bigger than most any of our dogs and twice as dense, and rip it into pieces. What do you think it would do to someone trying to hurt you?
Yea I don’t like the stupid short. I stick to minimum length with best stats. 10.5 is the shortest I got in 300 black. Longest I have I believe is 20inch for now.
Not sure about all this. I have several ar 10 rifles chambered in .243. My 11.5 inch upper still has a velocity of 3,200 fps. Still fast enough to reach beyond a .223. And has far greater energy. Perfect for home defense CQB or a truck rifle.

@@MadRhetorik. why are you shooting 300 at night
Always hated 5.56 SBRs.
For an SBR, I like 5.7x28 or .300 BLK.
I recommend a 6.5mm Grendel for 12.5 inch barrels it’s a great deal.
The .243 AR10 is a total sleeper...
She puts stuff to sleep that’s certain…
The .243 has been my favorite hunting cartridge since I was a kid. Got an old Mossberg for Christmas when I was 10 and never had a problem bringing down whitetail. I'm very interested in this build since it's only the second AR-10 I've seen in this caliber. CRS Firearms had a build video a couple of years ago as well. Thanks for the info!
Your set up should be dependent upon your mission.
Car gun, or in an urban environment? SBR makes sense.
The hills of west Virginia? The M1 Garand might still have some use.

In that caliber, that carbon fiber barrel is going to give you serious heat shift issues after less than 5 rounds.
With it being semi auto, I'd prefer a steel barrel, but your weight concerns with the AR10 are very valid. They can get really heavy, really fast.
CF is more stiff than steel.
@@perrytilton5221 at room temp, sure. When you start dealing with the heat you see in rifle barrels, you're going to have problems. Go look up some carbon fiber heat shift issues.
I belive the CF is an external and surroundes the actual steel resulting in weight reduction
@@christophervassar4047 it is. And that's also why it doesn't hold up very well to heat shift. Especially in comparison to harder steels.

As a battle rifle advocate. Im about it.

I can see the advantage of getting the flattest, fastest round possible when shooting unknown distances.
Um end of the world I want a common round 5.56 put of a 16 inch barrel is just fine.

Imagine having “infantry” in your username.
Why's being an 11B your entire being?
Inbet this thing penetrates body armor like nobodys business
Im thinking so. Speed is armors worst enemy
I like the 7.62 x 39 for soft within 300 yds. Doesn’t lose as much velocity out of a short barrel and then a .308 with a long barrel for long range
Precisely
It looks like a cool gun. But it seems like its unweildy. Really long and 15lbs.
An AR10 that’s 15lbs is light. I’ve held AR10’s with 18” barrels that were 20LBS
But why not 6.5 Grendel? This way, you could have one lower and multiple tuned uppers.
6.5 bad

personally im not luggin around a 20-24 inch barrel lol.
Cranial Vault shots work on every size animal..
But I’m gona find out.
looked like a scifi laser beam weapon with physical energy at the target.
Due to the 8.6s unreal twist rate(1:3) out past 3-400 yards it tends to spin so much it affects the flight pattern. I would be interested in seeing how people adapt tho
finally, a voice of reason against the wannabe operators.
Yeah, from a niche predator hunting viewpoint an SBR sucks. For general purposes, they're great. Also less common cartridges aren't the best idea for combat or survival situations; especially as an average civilian.
243 is extremely common, every gun shop in America has 243 ammo
I don’t discriminate. I like rifles of all shapes and sizes.
I mean it all depends, where i am in florida youre not making 800 meter shots, its all thick dense swamp and forest
Obviously not keeping the fur

Goals were made, and goals were achieved 🙌
My favorite combo is my LAR-15-A2 with an Electro reproduction scope and a 20 inch barrel, and 77 grain ammo. At 300 yards it is more than capable, and only has around 8 inches of drop, while still letting me plink around with the 55 and 62 gr that I can find at the local gun stores.
While this video is great. 3-400yrd shot out of an 16” 5.56 is more than doable and with soft point is enough to be lethal for something small like a coyote.
So is this (243 Hammer) a different cartridge than 243 Winchester?
It’s not even a hand load, its 243 win. Hornady Superformance 58gr ballistic tip.
Bro your rifle is a DMR, thats what it is, a pretty good one at that

Yeah, your 24" .243 sucks. I'll take a 12" 6mm Arc before either of what you showed.
What are you on? It must be good stuff 🤣
Woot woot for long barrels!!! I run a 20” barrel with 6MM ARC!!! Go .243!!! And go high BC, and super high efficient bullets.
I’m building a 6mm ARC on a lightweight SanTan billet set. Finally got my order after 2 1/2 years. Now I have to source parts and ammo
@@Arkayne eastern coyotes are a bit bigger too.
I best that 243 with the long barrel is just super nice to shoot. I really like how smooth a rifle length gun is compared to a short one

I completely agree with you on the advantages of a longer barrel. However I think that a bolt action has significant advantages: like not loosing spent brass in the dark because you want to reload.
Just get a brass catcher for your AR. They’re $10.
I don’t care enough about reloading to catch brass, although I do pick up what I can. It’s easy to find with the thermals I always have.

When a family of 5-6 coyotes comes in to your position having a semi-auto will make a big difference, also he did mention that he doesn't want to teach the coyotes in a calling situation. Better to kill them all or don't kill any for the success of future calling in that area.

300 yards with a 16” AR is really reasonable. We shoot 10.3” rifles with irons at 260. I mean you def built a laser and it’s cool.
There’s a difference between plinking man sized targets on a controlled range with a 556 vs sending a round into complete darkness with a ton of variables. We don’t shoot 556 guns that far at night for a multitude of reasons even though we “could”.

"Heat Scan".....you pull the trigger and the target is immediately down.
I’m a 20”+ kinda guy… 😊
Sometimes it matters 😂
Dude has a huge chip on his shoulder. You don’t need a rifle like that to shoot out to 400 at night. It’s nice but not necessary. Also as mentioned, defensive shooting is 99% 30yds and in hence more common SBRs in 10.5-14.5. This could have been a better video if they just lead off with how neat of a rifle it is and what you gain by having a rifle like this, and using hunting as a practical use is pretty cool instead of it being a safe queen. Don’t care about the back story and the high horsing.
Im a fan of a full length m16 hunting hogs and training on my property mostly but i just like my beauty queen. Great video👍

Why does Ethan like .243 more than 6.5 Creedmor?
