Noraly you won’t get to read this but...if you get a damaged thread on wheel nuts in the desert there is a temporary fix to get you into town. Strip a rag down to individual loose threads. Wind a thread (or 2 twisted into thicker cord) then wind the cotton onto the damaged part. Being careful to wind the right way around. Then wind the nut carefully back on capturing the cotton as a packing all the way in. The wheel spanner will prove when it gets tight and you can get going. If the nut is stripped on the inside you can take one good nut of another wheel which is good enough to get into town..in the old days when water pipes were made of iron plumbers would pack the threads with hemp.
The guy was a professional that did you seal, and it was very lucky that they had the right size in stock Noraly. Cleaning out brake rotor, any oil in the rotor holes, pads, will get the stopping power back. Yep, I'm glad you didn't have to stay too long in the city. For me three people is a crowd. Socks and new African scarf are on the way. Thanks again.
Yes, that mechanic working for Yamaha has made Yahama proud! Well done! And Noraly, again, always enjoy to watch your videos... Keep going! Ride safe always.
tech tip for everyone driving their car in these remote places: if/when your bolts/nuts/wheel studs have stripped or damaged thread try to find a piece of electric wire inside the car. Strip the wire to get some of the copper strands out. Use those copper strands to wrap/wind around the damaged thread of the strut or bolt. Then screw the damaged bolt with the copper strands wound around it back in to fix the wheel. The copper is a soft metal and will deform and fill the voids left when the steel threads got damaged. Don't over tighten the bolt or nut. But this temporary fix will get you to the next workshop. This temporary fix also works for sparkplugs and oil pan plugs. If you really want to be prepared for this kind of situation you could also put a rol of copper TAPE in your emergency tool kit just for situations like the red pickup truck had to deal with. The tape will do the same job.
😮Paradise the scenic route hard still worth it. I owned silver Honda 250 XL in 1972 what a machine I was 25 years old at the time this bike never ever let me down simple no fancy electronics bikes were still very raw and basic but very strong and reliable. Hi Itchy, yes you are so right always prioritise a problem like fork seals as that could be very dangerous very quickly. Wow what a nice bloke and a good mechanic to boot well done. Jon🇦🇺
There she is!! Many don't realize the climate change in a desert. It can get cold, have all sorts of storms, rain and snow... a real wonder of nature. No mention on how great the Lodge was. Now the causulty of Savannah. Off to the day, off on the road, ride careful. Good show using the law of roadside help. Great motorcycle wisdom. Never realize how long 2 x 3 min advertisements can be. Hope Savannah has a good mechanic and is healthy again. For all the rough riding she is holding up well. Just heard about the Blog on Savannah. Looking forward reading this. Aw those German mechanic tips...always love the garage clips. Hope you go back to the last lodge, in the Namib Desert. Have a safe 400+km ride. Enjoy ... Ride careful... Stay safe ...
I hope you had the seals replaced in both forks, if one is leaking the other will be soon. I can't believe the guy didn't recommend dust boots for the forks, especially in that environment. Good Luck
You're absolutely right that you have to trust your machine. You can't enjoy your journey if you don't. Loved the mechanic. Knowledgeable and personable. And I noticed....not a single dislike for the video!!!!
The way to fix a situation like that where you have stripped wheel lugs is to remove each hub one-by-one and then, using a hammer, knock out one lug and then put the hub back on. That way, you end up with three good lugs on every wheel. Then you drive easy until you get to the next town where you can purchase new lugs with nuts and have a mechanic restore the three wheels with three lugs and replace all lugs in the wheel that had been damaged. It takes a lot of time when you're on the road like that to accomplish the job but it's effective. If you don't have a hammer, put a nut on the lug flush to the outside of the lug and use the lug wrench to knock the lug out. driving the lugs back in is easy. Probably the most difficult part is removing each hub in order to drive out the needed lug.
@@selcukcilek555 - those are guards, gaiters are very rare on U S D forks probably because they prevent the legs from being washed / air hole lets in dirt and water that close to the road. from looking around there does seem to be a dust sleeve available which fits over the seal area.
A get you home tip for a loose or stripped thread is to wind some electrical wire around the thread and force the nut back on. If no wire is around a strip of tin can will do.
I would love to travel with you. I love how you remain calm and always loving what is. I love your sensibilities. I'm almost 80 years old so I can only live vicariously. I love where you are and dream of being out in that area just exploring and loving life.

And then there was our exploration of the coast of southeastern South America......and Sani Pass. And Norway was so stunning so.. well carry on. Woo hoo. Got my buff ordered yesterday!!!
To check the fork bumpers regularly for damage is key when you ride in Rocky Sandy stuff all the time. A roughed up surface is like rasping for the seals. A small slice of sandpaper so smooth the forks is an easy way to last the seals.
as a retired motocycle mechanic, ( re living the good times i had in the trade ) i would have replaced the seals on both forks aswell as the dust seals and the oil in both sides at the same time, i know it's an extra cost but it makes both sides the same and balanced, hopefully you won't be replacing any more in the near future, great video by the way, looking forward to more of your vlogs.
I really like the lack of drama. Many other channels would have had " Savanna bleeding out in the middle of the desert. I can't continue. Is this the end?"
I much prefer "Slight change of plans. Just nipping off on a 1000km detour for a bit of maintenence. Keep calm and carry on. Oh look Giraffes!" :-)

Thanks for the tip!
jfv65 you beat me to it. I was typing the very same !
😮Paradise the scenic route hard still worth it.
I owned silver Honda 250 XL in 1972 what a machine I was 25 years old at the time this bike never ever let me down simple no fancy electronics bikes were still very raw and basic but very strong and reliable.
I get VERY NOSTALGIC wben I follow you up the mountain passes.
you must try ONGELUKSNEK PASS just outside MATATIELA it exits at TELEBRIDGE on the way to RHODES known for its great trout fishing population under a hundred souls .You must do a little research on that area worth it
Keep safe blessings regards Paul van Niekerk xxx

Spectacular sunrise with wild Giraffes 💖 Great mechanic 👍 how to fix the fork seal, Interesting family at roadside. May the wind be with you Noraly 🤩
Hi Itchy, yes you are so right always prioritise a problem like fork seals as that could be very dangerous very quickly. Wow what a nice bloke and a good mechanic to boot well done. Jon🇦🇺
Stay in the wind..wow thank you so much for sharing ....so inspiring...see on the road....👍🥰
Your travels are such an amazing advertisement for Honda they should send a tech out to meet you and replace those seals.
With the parts……..by helicopter…………if they have any sense!. What an advert for Honda this amazing journey is. Come on Honda😀
@@G58 - good point, or at least without fork protection !
@@G58 Yes, and putting the oil filled damper on the same side as the disk?!!? Holy fork, who came up with that gem!!!
Good Luck
Feita a manutenção da moto, voltar às aventuras na areia.☺️☺️☺️🇧🇷
Hello Noraly, it's really exciting to watch your videos, it's getting more and more interesting. Keep on uploading.
You're absolutely right that you have to trust your machine. You can't enjoy your journey if you don't. Loved the mechanic. Knowledgeable and personable. And I noticed....not a single dislike for the video!!!!
Lovely, helpful people, everywhere Noraly goes. Very encouraging!
🏴 hi Noraly
when you getting fork seals replaced get them to fit fork gatters great for your kind of travels👍
Gaiters, yes ! Good thing in hostile environment .
I am positive to have seen that Noraly's bike has some fitted already.
@@selcukcilek555 - those are guards, gaiters are very rare on U S D forks probably because they prevent the legs from being washed / air hole lets in dirt and water that close to the road. from looking around there does seem to be a dust sleeve available which fits over the seal area.
@@mc2594 I know mate. Didn't want to nitpick on the original message. I am aware that Noraly has upside down forks on her bike with guards mounted.
A get you home tip for a loose or stripped thread is to wind some electrical wire around the thread and force the nut back on. If no wire is around a strip of tin can will do.
Last episode - Wow !! 🇬🇧🏍
The giraffes were gorgeous. Glad you got Savannah fixed. That was a wise choice.
One thing about her, always positive.
Hopefully not with the coronavirus
I would love to travel with you. I love how you remain calm and always loving what is. I love your sensibilities. I'm almost 80 years old so I can only live vicariously. I love where you are and dream of being out in that area just exploring and loving life.
What stunning landscape. I think the most beautiful scenery encountered on "our" journey thus far... though our ride in the volcanic area of Chile was spectacular, as well.
Amazing ~ you and Savanna are in a bit of a serious mechanical riding situation, but you still stop to try to help others.
Good and correct choice to go go Windhoek to fix the problem.
Great to know that you have decent mechanics that can assist you on your travels.Thanks.
as a retired motocycle mechanic, ( re living the good times i had in the trade ) i would have replaced the seals on both forks aswell as the dust seals and the oil in both sides at the same time, i know it's an extra cost but it makes both sides the same and balanced, hopefully you won't be replacing any more in the near future, great video by the way, looking forward to more of your vlogs.
With the roads you travel im amazed your suspension has held up this long!
Nice work by the mechanic!! Savannah is all good again!
I just love how everything you see seems to amaze you. That's why your video's are wonderful.
You make it all so interesting ,just the way you relate to animals ,people and dealing with adversity ,great editing.
