    I was so worried when you didn't translate "kädenlämpöinen" and so skipped warming the milk!! Oh the childhood traumas. I guess adding the butter warm (or having warm hands) might have helped, since the dough did rise. It seems you got very lucky there. Rest may not have been traditional, but that's just fine tuning and people already each have their own style. And it was interesting to see how you made something exactly right just by guessing. I'm actually surprised you hadn't made them before.
    I think it's okay to translate more freely, or maybe Cat could underline some words that are essential? Depends on the recipe really. This seems a very fun concept!

    • @paula2475
      @paula2475 3 роки тому +1

      I recently found out that one should not warm the milk, at least according to professional bakers. The heat from the hands or the energy from the machine is enough to warm up the dough during the kneading phase.
      Hesari has a really nice explanation of the food science behind really good cinnamon buns www.hs.fi/ruoka/art-2000006447109.html

      Actually I have a recipe where you roll out the dough, add the filling, fold it over and then cut it in strips. Then you twist the strips and then roll them into little "knots" so after baking you get a very pretty twisted little bun. But his technique was fascinating, I agree!

  • @MariattaAino

    This was wonderful! In my family we've never mixed the filling into a paste, we just butter the dough plane and sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon on it before rolling, but I might have to try the paste way now. Amazing job, especially with how little you ultimately understood of the instructions. Not suprised to be fair, a lot of baking related vocabulary isn't used much in other contexts in finnish, so no wonder there was a lot that was unfamiliar to you.

  • @Vahlsten
    @Vahlsten 4 роки тому +8

    This was actually pretty entertaining! rkl is a short from ruokalusikka, witch you got right in the end and translates to food spoon funny that it's in english a table spoon are you eating the table with it? Just kidding I know it's the spoon that you put on the table when setting the table and not the spoon you use to stir the soup or stew witch in finnish is called "kauha" or even "soppakauha" and soppa is an old word for something that is bethween soup and a stew.
    Because to my knowledge soup is a soup at the point when all the ingredients have cooked through and the stock is mostly clear and stew is when they've been cooked to a point they start to fall apart and the reduced stock has turned into a broth (kinda misty liquid with all the flavour and the nutrients of the ingredients).
    Hope you got something out of this, and all of this started from a spoon lol.
    I love and hate english language, old, delicate and sophisticated, yet missing so much like a separate word for positive experience we have in Finnish language ("elämys") since even bad things are experiences ("kokemus") and we aren't the jolliest bunch of hairless apes on the rock, it's good to make sure that something good happened at some point of our meaningless existence.

    • @TheArseen
      @TheArseen 4 роки тому +1

      I think soppa and keitto are the same, and not only clear stock (think (kermainen) kalakeitto with cream or milk) and muhennos when it's past traditional hernerokka in thickness.

    • @Finwolven
      @Finwolven 4 роки тому

      @@TheArseen Soppa and keitto are the same, but there's lots of words like that, words that cover multiple meanings in other languages. It even goes both ways between every two languages, and then there are regional variations. Muhennos and stew are often used in translation, but that's not entirely correct, either.
