Longstreet wasn't suggesting to Lee that the Army retreat. He wanted a lateral movement which would put the Rebels between the Yankee Army and Washington, forcing the Yankees into being the ones who charged against a dug-in force. Instead, it was the Rebels charging the dug-in Yankees at Gettysburg.
@@deanbelvins7279 no, Jackson would not have been able to make 1.5 mi charge across open ground work. Where Jackson would have made the difference is day one when his successors dithered and gave up the fight before they had finished pushing the Union off cemetery ridge and Culp's hill. However, had he done so, the battle we know today would have been little more than a footnote to the battle either where Meade was preparing, or somewhere between Gettysburg and Washington where Longstreet wanted to move even after the first day of fighting.
@@whysrumgone if Gen. Jackson had still been alive. The battle would have been much farther north than Gettysburg. Remember, Gen. Jackson covered more ground than other Corps. Also, with the loss of Gen. Jackson, Gen. Lee had reorganized the entire army from 2 ton3 Corps and 2 of the 3 Corps commanders were new to that level of command and were not capable of making such an intricate move especially under fire and in the face of a determined, well trained, well supplied and trained enemy.
I very much admire Shelby Foote, His narratives on the War Between the States I found gripping and brilliant. I think until a person visits Gettysburg, they are ignorant of the American experience.
FYI... Cemetery Hill was defended. Howard left a Division and 40 cannon there when he passed through. Ewell would not have taken it with the 11,000+ men he had available.
I agree that his attack was arrogant and quite an act of desperation but no more so than Burnside at Fredericksburg. It would have seemed that Lee would have learned from Burnside's ignorance and arrogance yet, to the amazement of most, he followed suit.
That's odd. The scene with Lee's aide telling him that Hill's heading into Gettysburg for some shoes (there being a factory in the town) is left out of the finished movie. Half of the AoNV were barefoot and it's an important aspect of just how the clusterfuck began.
Confederate Propaganda and historically inaccuracies, also Slow, Tedious, and Boring, but to me Stonewall Jackson's scenes are watchable because of Stephen Lang's great Performance.
I believe Lee suffered from a typical delusion of his time. He had been taught @ West Point to basically worship Bonaparte as the great genius of the age. Thus Lee always sought to bring his enemy into a situation where he could annihiliate it. While he might have seemed to be luring his enemy in w/ passive traps, he always tried to turn this situation around & annihilate the enemy. This cost him far too many of his own men. Lee also carried out many attacks on Washington from the South.
You know, I can't say I Disagree with your reply. I have always thought that Gen. Lee fought his army like he had limitless troop replacements. The fact is that whenever he won a huge battle.... it cost him more and more of the cream of his army.
"A dangerous savage child race" is how the Star Trek TNG omnipotent entity, Q(John DeLancie), referred to humans. That's a good description of us. Humans have made mistakes, fought wars based on differing religious, political, or economical beliefs, but we will someday in the far future learn from all those mistakes and improve ourselves as an entire planet-wide species.
Steven Baldi If you look at any war, each individual side was "right". No one went to war that I know saying their cause or reason was wrong. If you look at this world as one theatre, can you find any stronghold that speaks of peace and wisdom? I can't. Personally, I look forward to the last war where God reigns and true peace will reign forever.
those reenactors must have really felt the ghosts watching them. Tremendous production...too bad movies like this, historically accurate and honest, don't get the attention from the wider public. Profits tend to be low, and i think the Gettysburg movie even lost money overall. But i applaud the producers and actors who know they are making a better quality product than the usual crapola streaming out of hollywood.
gyrofoam1...The movie was pretty good in it's accuracy but they still missed an awful lot. They never went in for shoes and there never was any shoe factory. It was as simple as the two armies happening upon each other.
fldinosaur Yeah, the shoe story is highly doubtful. Gettysburg was a small country town with only the clothing and supplies needed by their few citizens. There was no reasons to believe there was some huge stash of shoes or any type of supplies there to make it valuable to tens of thousands of troops. Besides, Early's boys had passed through Gettysburg a few days before, and if there had been anything there worth taking, they would have already done so. Gettysburg's real value was strategic. All anyone has to do is look at a map of that area even today and see that G-burg was and still is the hub of several roads which converge there. If you or your enemy are marching an army through that area, you or they are going to end up there sooner or later, possibly at the same time. Even if it's not your end target (the ANV was on the way to Harrisburg), you'd better control the crossroads on your flanks, and G-burg stands out on a map like a sore thumb as an intersection you'd better hold.
Lee's "audacity" was profligacy. He wasted his men for very little return. He should have followed the example of Washington & husbanded his men's lives. The reality is the South was continuously losing ground w/ occasional tactical florishes & successes. No one in that day would have done much different, but it was a foolish waste.
Your comment sums up all wars, technology and advancements in arms always proceeds the tactics of the day. Even today in basic training (I can tell you as a vet), we still train for WWII style fox hole war fair, even though Urban Combat is the fighting style of the day today.
Uh huh....a man who has a long and happy marriage, spends lots of money and time promoting a better life for people compared to a man fighting to preserve slavery. Yeah, I pick Sheen.

Wha? Longstreet's wife didn't die early in the war at the time of their children and he did not remarry (until his wife did die in his 70s)! Mr. Foote! Well, glad to see even admirable historians like Shelby Foote don't always get it right but shame on the producers for including it in the documentary! Between that and Garnett's statement in the movie about which kids died from scarlet fever, the novice is going to have their facts so screwed up if they don't dig a little deeper.
good movie, but it was slowed and tainted by so much smarmy sentimentalism. the time wasted on those boorish scenes could have been better spent focusing on other parts of the battle, or better yet, a bigger part for George Meade, who had something like 20 seconds of screen time to deliver 3 lines. i mean, come on. he was the union general.
Great generals my arse.Sending soldiers into battle shoulder to shoulder and then standing sometimes thirty yards apart firing at each other. The motto of these so called great generals was "we have more men than you have bullets".
William Parkes shortly after the movie was made, Charlie was on a late night talks host saying some Very nasty things about his father. Martian comes out and to his son’s horror said “ Son, I’m going to kill you “, in his best General Robert E. Lee drawl!
GODs & GENERALS was a better movie than Gettysburg. I cannot stand to watch this movie Martin Sheen was terrible as General Lee. Shame they could not get Robert Duvall, who was EXCELLENT as R E Lee.
I care for a grave in my home town of a soldier of the 8th Virginia Infantry who was wounded just ten feet from General Armistead. Joel Osborne Adams. Placed a new Iron Cross to his grave for the one stolen. I cut his grass and keep him covered with the flag he fought under.
Shelby Foote...love this man to death! Could listen to him for days :)
Looks like Shelby came right from 1863 straight to the TV studio. He should have been in the film.

Add he was right!! Only Gen T J (Stonewall) Jackson could have executed Gen Lee’s orders effectively on July 3rd!!

jemonaco you are spot on.

Was Sam Elliott born at the age of 40 and never grew old?
General Porter Alexander was right, the Confederates should have dug in after the success of July first and let the Federals come to them.
I agree that his attack was arrogant and quite an act of desperation but no more so than Burnside at Fredericksburg. It would have seemed that Lee would have learned from Burnside's ignorance and arrogance yet, to the amazement of most, he followed suit.
I totally agree, what a voice and knowledge!

It was in the directors cut.

Yep
I had two ancestors there. Both made it back to Virginia / West Virginia (stolen).

Sedition was beaten that day ,at gettysburg.

Yes
It's not left out of the movie so...

Lee, the greatest general ever.🌺
Sam Elliot...a Texan....fighting for the north....if even as an actor...should have said..I want to be a confederate!!!
John Buford was a Southerner though. He was from Kentucky.

Love Martin Sheen, but this performance is so weak.
Tom Berringer was terrible in this movie. Sheen was quite good.
Let is overrated
It's hard to take anything said by the voice of Charlie Sheen's father seriously.
