Saw Rory and the Hurricanes many times at the iron door and the esoldo birkenhead, I am 74 wish I could go back to when I was 17 and 1 night at the iron door.
maybe you remember what's jeans wore teens in Liverpool in 1950s? Lybro, Flemings? Or something else? And what jeans Rory wore? thanks for comment in advance.
Hi bob, I wore Fleming's and Levi's my uncle was a merchant seaman in the 60s brought them back from the states. As to Rory Storm I cant say what Jean's he wore, only that he was simply the best. Keep well..Eddie..liverpool.
@@eddieconnor8864 Hi Eddie, noted with thanks. Why I asked? I'm in process of writing a book "Beatles & denim". One chapter will be dedicated to Rory, Johnny "Guitar", Ringo. Rory is great really. Pity that it is lack of recordings. I saw just one CD. And Flemings story is very interesting also. Did you buy your jeans at Scotland road (Liverpool) shop? Maybe you can share more info (if remember) about Liverpool (and UK) jeans (Lybro, Westcot, etc,) in 1950-60s? For reference - my mail bobimpreza@gmail.com
A local legend in the 1960’s Liverpool music scene I find it fascinating that people still talk about this man. To this degree he is and remains an enigma of sorts. There is footage of him singing at the Cavern in 1963 and he most definitely has stage presence, he’s good looking on the screen, has a good voice and a decent backing band. I have wondered whether Paul McCartneys relationship with his sister Iris, had any negative influence on being signed by Brian Epstein? I mean the Beatles in effect took his drummer and this remains his most infamous connection to Rock ‘n’ Roll history. I love the black and white photographs of Rory and The Beatles at his home. All the bands used to congregate at his mothers house Vi after the clubs had closed. If the Hurricanes and the Beatles were such good friends, then why did they not help him get a record deal? Surely they owed him a favour because of Ringo? I know Epstein recorded and produced West Side story’s “America” with the band but that song choice is nothing short of ridiculous. Can anyone shed light on this story? To die in the manner that he did, by dying accidentally and with his mother killing herself because of this is nothing short of tragic. I have read in many books that it was a suicide pact?...again..does anyone believe there is any truth in this claim? I know it’s without question that they were joined at the hip...so sad either way. One day a film maker may revisit this story and make a movie about it. It most certainly has all the elements of drama...the 1960’s music scene...the Beatles...a charismatic front man...and an ending no script writer could pen. R.I.P Rory Storm.♥️🙏. x
What a sad thing - the Beatles seem to not have ever mentioned RORY STORM at all in any interviews- at least I never heard them say anything about Rory Storm ! - wtf- that is sad- I am thinking as time goes on that The Beatles were a bit evil in their ways back then - because they seem to have pushed people about to get where they wanted to be - the got rid of PETE BEST who was with them a long time - in this case the Beatles - got Ringo away from Rory Storm and the Hurricanes ? -WHY did the Beatles need to take away Ringo from Rory? There had to be many other drummers back then that were available/ what the fuck !
Joe Nania To be fair Ringo mentions Rory to this present day. As for Best I think like any band with a history, there are different members that come and go. It’s astonishing to see how many different members who at one time or another, apart of what was to eventually become the Beatles. The core nucleus that were present from the beginning were “John, Paul and George”. If you listen to the “Decca audition” on Year’s Day 1962 you can hear that Petes drumming is not up to scratch. Same in the EMI audition. His accompaniment to “Love me Do” is plain awful. The straw that broke the camels back was when producer George Martin demanded they bring in a session musician on the first record. It’s not even Ringo who plays on “Love me do”. So all the ominous signs were there. I believe it was more a slow gradual process of being frustrated by Petes lack of musical growth. Also, no one could have foreseen the monumental rise to fame of the fab 4. It was literal world domination in the space of 18 short months. Also, periodically Ringo stepped in for the Beatles when Pete couldn’t make a gig. According to Paul McCartney “all the band felt something clicked”. In hindsight it looks worse in light of what we now know but the variables were unknown at the time. Ringo acknowledged that The Beatles were the best band in Liverpool at that time and they had just signed a record deal. I believe he left Rory and the Hurricanes with his blessings which is good to know. As an aside, Rory recorded “America” on West side story, produced by Brian Epstein. Like another great local band “The Big 3” they flattered to deceive when recorded. Interesting quote by Lennon when asked “is Ringo one of the best drummers in the world” John replied “he’s not even the best drummer in The Beatles”. He later seriously added that “Ringo was the best drummer for the Beatles”. Ringo’s musicianship fits the compositions of Lennon/McCartney like a glove though without a doubt he was lucky, in that his timing was right(No pun intended!!). History proved that the Ringo decision was not only vital but it was an early indicator to the Beatles ability to recognise talent. Evil is too strong a word to contextualise this moment in time but they were must certainly ambitious and ruthless if needs be.Epstein tried to form another group around Pete but again this never worked. Finally I was pleased that Pete got significant financially remuneration after the “Anthology series” came out, so there was at least some silver lining for the ex “Silver Beetle”. Either way the Beatles as John, Paul, George and Ringo will always be the greatest band of all time. 🙏♥️🎼.x
The Beatles had to be strong and single minded to succeed in the early pop business, Ringo played for the Beatles several times and they liked very much his drumming, Ringo fitted in like a glove, the Beatles in the form of George asked Ringo if he would join the Beatles and he did but only after informing Rory what he was going to do, everyone went from band to band in those days, it was common practice, Ringo was the missing jigsaw piece that made the Beatles massive, Rory and the Hurricanes were never going to be huge and Ringo knew this, and lastly like the other Beatles, Ringo was very ambitious and knew his worth, he had to move on and take his chance especially since the Beatles had secured a recording contract and a very good and ambitious manager, Brian Epstein and George Martin, the right people at the fight time !
@@hollywoodjoe123 they talked about Rory all the time. They tell you Rory Storm and the Hurricanes were the best group in Liverpool. They played together in Hamburg etc
In the words of Rory himself, “I make ‘em, and they take ‘em”! Rory actually references the Beatles in his adaptation of ‘America’, and it’s undoubtedly Rory that the Scaffold are referencing in their song ‘Ten Years On After Strawberry Jam’.
I don't understand why Germans would want to listen to British groups sing in English. I don't think I'd go to a club to listen to a German band singing in German, even if they were good.
Dan R: I enjoy listening to songs in different languages. I can more pay attention to the music, and the voice as an instrument without being side tracked trying to figure out the lyrics.
One of the greats. Saw him with the Hurricanes (including Ringo) at Butlin's.

You always knew when rory storm and the hurricane were in town cause you'd be blown away.
"Rory Storm and The Hurricanes" were #1 in Liverpool while "The Beatles" were barely a band. It was Hamburg that made "The Beatles".
