My old drama teacher taught me the "learn a line, then learn the next line, then combine" technic junior year and I agree that it's an AWESOME way to memorize.
ryanistotallynormal dude I was doing a short play at my school and I just froze and I couldn't remember my line for the life of me I was so embarrassed
ryanistotallynormal my long term is decent but my short term is kind of crappy. I wish I had a good short term memory. One of the reasons why I never got into theatre or acting. I love to make people laugh
I would add another tip for monologues. Before even memorising the lines, make sure every single piece of information means something to you. For example if you say 'drawer' make sure you have a clear image of what drawer you talk about. If there is a memory being told, create this memory as clearly and detailed as possible so it's almost like your brain thinks it's your actual memory. If the script mentions a name, make sure you have their face in your mind and some memories of that person etc. Above all make sure you know why your character is saying what they are saying. What are the things they would like to say but are not saying? What do they want to achieve? What if they don't achieve that? Only then start memorising and it will be 10 times faster in your head after you had done all that other imagination work on the text :) If you know what you are saying it will be only polishing the exact wording and sentence structure in the end. Hope this helps :)
Best way I have found is to use a digital tape recorder. Say your cues into it and leave space for you to talk in real life. You don't always have a friend to run lines with you, and doing it this way allows you to run lines at any time. (BTW check your e-mail)
This video was very helpful!!! I just got into acting and I struggle with memorizing monologues and scripts!! I feel better about memorizing now!! :) :) :)
I've never thought of memorizing my lines by recording them before. I remember when I was a kid I memorized song lyrics by listening to them over and over and visualizing the words as I heard them. I should try recording myself speaking my lines and then see if that helps me to memorize my lines quickly. Thanks for the amazing tips!
This is great! Extremely helpful, thank you!! Your personality is adorable. And your kitty too. :) Here's what I found most helpful: "Memorize your lines, not emotions.", "Memorize your partners lines.", "Write out your lines." "Virtual script partner" I'm wondering, from your training, acting classes, workshops, or interactions with your agent etc., what are some tips or exercises that have really stood out to you and helped you?
Last year for my 8th grade play, I was one of the main characters in the play alongside another great actor that had just a little bit less than mine, I had to memorize just a little bit every day and I used all my study halls for the memorizing script. I would get about 3 paragraphs completely memorized and perfect WITH blocking everyday. Also I had other actors with me so we could get a feel for the blocking. This really helps. Now in 9th now I am in a HUUGE production that is for competition and I am 1 out of 3 freshmen that got into it and if say about 15 freshmen tried out and i beat a couple of upper classmen. It's very stressful and intimidating to remember lines especially when we are gonna have to perform 4 or 5 times. And when there are seniors that are much better than you. I hope we win in district and state completion for the play. WISH ME LUCK
Tip: work backwards, this is especially good if you have a monologue. Learn each paragraphs at a time (or split it into chunks) but backwards. So start with the end and finish with the beginning. This works rly well for me and I hope it helps you. Ps it works if you have no time, I just learnt my lamda speeches in under an hour.
Heeyyy! Thanks! My drama teacher sent out the monologue's and cold reads YESTERDAY for auditions tomorrow! I just now saw the email and its 11:45 PM! Tytyty
I have an audition coming up and i have to preform Shakespeare. I tried using an accent and it sounds really good but is that a good idea for an audition?
Watching videos and reading articles on fast line memorisation instead of learning my lines that are for tomorrow, procrastination much . Thanks for the tips!
I got some advice I don't know if it helps but : but get a movie you really like and know well and get a character remember their lines and react I think it could help remember
Thank you for reading this comment because the app FACEVOX is a great tape deck for people who want to memorize their lines and you helped me think of this as a use case to get people excited... I am so lucky that you use your iPhone to record your lines :D great ideas!! I want you to know you are inspiring to me !!
Just a note for highlighting, make sure to read the cover of the script because some licensing companies (MTI for example) ask to only write in the script in pencil
I'm watching this because I have to memorize a monologue from a Shakespeare play for my English class. I have to recite it tomorrow, and I still haven't memorized it. I hate public speaking, and memorizing, so pretty much the worst assignment for me. Great video, it really helped.
I just got into a play yesterday and I have to be off book in a week. I have over 90 lines to remember. I've memorized 20 of them because of this video! Thanks for the tips :)
i have 43 lines to memorize and i have only 2 days to memorize it .. I'm gonna be dead when i came to school and not having to memorize even a single line LMAO my Teacher in English will kill me for this (*cries*)
Hi, Thank you for making this very straight forward. My question is, how can I increase my chance to be accepted in on an audition? The other question is on my resume, do I need to include my height, weight, race, and age?
This year is my second year of doing Shakespeare plays, and last year I got a small part so it was easy to memorize. This year though, I got a fairly big part and now I have to memorize a lot more lines then I had to before. These tips really helped me :)
do u have any tips for remembering shakespear? I ask because I have a monologue from A midsummer night's dream, and I have been trying to remember it but the vocabulary is extremely challenging. (i am in 8th grade)
Sorry its kind of late, but I did a Midsummer Night's Dream last year! I don't usually think of memorizing Shakespeare as anything different from memorizing anything else. It is a good idea to go on sparknotes.com and go to No Fear Shakespeare. You can also just google no fear shakespeare. It's a website with modern translations of all of shakespeare's plays. hey! I have an audition on Monday and I have 2 days left and I'm not sure if I am going to have enough time to learn it all ,so I wanted to know if you could have your script during the audition. thanks
I got a lead role in a Christmas play that I'm in and i record myself saying the other peoples lines and i practice by saying my lines so its like im acting with the other charecters! and it works!

ryanistotallynormal dude I was doing a short play at my school and I just froze and I couldn't remember my line for the life of me I was so embarrassed
ryanistotallynormal how did you do? Lol
Curly4000 I passed XD I'm just one of those lucky people with crazy good short term memory for scripts. It's long term that's the hardest for me lol
ryanistotallynormal my long term is decent but my short term is kind of crappy. I wish I had a good short term memory. One of the reasons why I never got into theatre or acting. I love to make people laugh
i just don't get how some actors can memorize like an entire tv episode
Practice and hard work, 😇
They do one scene at a time. If the director doesn't like it as much or wants to fix something they would do it all over again.
Jennifer Te Not if there in a play!
sky peters they film it scene by scene, so they learn one scene, film it, learn another scene, film etc etc.
DIFFERENT TAKES AND SCENESSSSS....why do u think it takes forever for things to come out?
This one really helps me! Try to write only the first letter of each word.
Jenna Bocking Also another good tip! (:
I have just joined acting classes and already feeling the pressure of remembering the lines and going into the character. God please be with me.
I don't have an audition but i have a compitition and it is on 26 July. But......................
I have 7 more pages. Wish me luck!
Good luck!

just like find a monologue on the internet and memorize it so it can be audition ready that is always a good idea.
you are perfect just the way you are, always remember this.
I auditioned for a play just for fun.
I ended up getting the lead.
This video was much appreciated
I suggest just highlighting your name not the line. It's difficult to make changes when the whole line is highlighted.
Am I the only one in the comments that actually studied said monologue at a reasonable time
It helps me to write it all down, at least once.
Could you do a video on how to be ready for a cold read? Or like just pick up a script you have never read and perform it with tips along the way?
Never stop making videos. You are one of the big reasons I want to be in movies and shows
you are my GO TO for acting videos
I'm going to my second audition tomorrow and I'm so nervous but your videos are helping me so much
Thanks so much!
You kinda look like Lydia from Teen Wolf LOL

You can do it, I've memorized a three minute monologue in 10 minutes.
Same! I have six days!
