yeah, its used in sweet child, slash use all over the place though, for example in the slither solo, I also think kirk hammet uses it in the unforgiven 3, although I might be wrong
This is a pretty valuable piece of information. I've been trying to develop my own stuff, but having premade licks to practice with makes things so much easier.
I don't know if this'll help anyone but I was struggling to gain speed with the first lick until I started thinking about it as triplets, then it became super easy. Just thought I'd share!
@@end27 play through the pattern counting 1, 2, 3. 1, 2, 3....Stress the 1. (Make louder slightly) you would only tap your foot on the 1 of every three.
I really like that Randy Rhoads-inspired lick. That's a great lick idea I hadn't thought of, and it goes well with other scales too, not just pentatonic!
Great playing and instruction. Can’t help but notice you have the pickups almost flush with the pick guard. Works well and brings out the true character of a Strat. Works especially well on clean tones but also allows those great sonic characteristics on high gain settings, as you obviously know. Smart man!
Thanks!... Great to see your right hand motion on the first lick. I ever struggled, with a "down, up, down" combination wich slows me down. Looks like "down, down, up" is a more comfortable way!
Love the way you bookended the licks with a decending lick and a assending lick and a great neck climber in the middle with some awesome string bends in the mix . Some endless combos to be had in these little gems .
You got one of the best channels for learning new licks. Im fairly good but just learning new licks and twisting them around with ones i know really expands my playability. Thanks so much man!
I think I've commented before on that fine tube amp/single coil sound you are getting. Really inspiring. Still can't get enough of that seafoam strat as well.
Great licks. I'm always experimenting with different scales, modes, and patterns but when you play rock music these are the ones you always come back to.
Holy Sh*t finally found some amazing vids to learn from. Everything runs like it's meant to be. Skills, light, camera angles, everything. Cheers! Is that a MIA or MIM Strat? You Rock.
Awesome video! the way you broke down each lick was great, when played at full speed I was like "damn that looks hard" then you slowed it down and they were actually pretty simple! I will check out some more videos for sure now!
Thank for the video bud. Been working so damn much I haven’t had the energy to play for a few months (man am I getting rusty) these licks should bring some much needed spark into my playing.
That first lick is great. My band does Ain't talkin bout love. I was fooling around with this last night and it makes for the perfect ending to the song after the final E power chord.
Ya' know Robert Baker, I truly wish I had the internet 35 years ago when I started playing. I've learned more in the past 15 years than the first 20 combined. Kids are lucky to have such a tool today. Not to mention guitars are much better built today. Low end guitars are wayyyy better today!
A guy came into my bar while I was just noodling around and said all you need to know is the pentatonic blues scale, what key you're in so you can know what is the I, IV & V chords and what is minor and major. That is it. If you can learn that, then you can play everything ever played on the radio since 1958. So that is what I did and these licks are straight up awesome. What else is there? If you want to learn all those Yngwie Malmsteen Phrygian scales and crap, go ahead.
The pentatonic scale for me it makes me happy and more takes me to heaven thats what i feel couse and if you look the blues players they are always happy and if you look the metal players or the neo clasical players they are not happy they never smile thats couse there souls are empty for real
Great lesson thanks and great channel. You've not only got the talent but you're clearly a great teacher too. A big help for me with lick 1 was watching your picking hand. The up stroke on every 4th really helped me.
great! Liked a lot. Cool style, nice way of explaining, clear but not boring. Two steps higher than the major of videos of this kind of video one can find around!
I remember hearing ex. 5 when I heard the solo in 'Maiden's "Quest for Fire" (the harmony part at the end of the solo, anyway). I was a complete beginner at guitar and kind of a beginner with metal. At the time, it sounded so fresh to my ears.
At least it drew your attention :P I just don't like the color. I like seeing the wood texture underneath the finish. These type of guitars look kind of cheap and plastic-ish to me. But as you said, each to their own! I should spend less time bitching about guitar finish and practice some more....
tony93666 😂Funny, love that visual. Now that I've somewhat mastered my natural minor scales...i feel like all my improvs sound good, but the same flavor. I can't here seeking some new spices to throw in. Hit👊 pay dirt with these!
Robert Baker, thank you very much for this video. Its exactly what I needed. Ive been in a rut with lead runs and this will re inspire me to practice more. thanks
I'm posting because I know you listen,..I am certain that a Lynch and DeMartini lick lesson would be more than great,...slippery playing that breaks the mold of numerous players.
I constantly play lick #1, to soundcheck, for over a year now. I learned it myself and thought it was original, but maybe it just sounded familiar. :P It's pretty neat and easy to learn!
You have your strat...and your generator...in seafoam green....that is so awesome I didn't hear a word you said...also dig the panama 212, sad they don't offer their cabs in seafoam green....yet.
Nice video! Excellent tone and skill! You had me a little confused when you kept saying "take it up a string" and then you moved down to the next lower string, but overall a cool way to look at some fun pentatonic drills.
1:22 first lick.
3:04 second
4:02 third
5:23 fourth
6:30 fifth
You're welcome
Thanks!
casperado666 MVP!
Thanks a lot

God bless you
1:20 Jimmy Page style lick
3:03 Staple rock lick (Slash style)
4:01 Zakk Wylde/Randy Rhoads style lick
5:23 Simple bend lick
6:28 Pentatonic run
Isnt the 5:23 one kinda a Sweet Child O Mine kinda lick "Thats where I recognize it atleast"
yeah, its used in sweet child, slash use all over the place though, for example in the slither solo, I also think kirk hammet uses it in the unforgiven 3, although I might be wrong
DinosaurFromFuture the 3rd lick is actually something Randy Rhoads used in his spotlight solos, zakk later adopted that style lick after Randy.
Thanks for these info! I edited my message
page uses that number 2 lick a lot live.
They do it so effortlessly and make it look so easy. Bloody hell.
I love how you amp color matches your guitar
I'm guilty of all of these licks and I can't even play them well. *cries in corner*

Forget the entire video that is the nicest looking strat I have ever seen in my entire life ever EVER
i just want like a half hour of this guy shredding. the tone is amazing!

I didn't have a problem with speed on the 1st lick, but the 3rd lick destroyed me. Any tips on that one? It might just be my finger placement.
can u explain this because i am strugling aswell

Great lesson, my friend!
I really like that Randy Rhoads-inspired lick. That's a great lick idea I hadn't thought of, and it goes well with other scales too, not just pentatonic!
"How to make the most overused scale in all of guitar history sound good in 5 ways" should be the title of the video
the pentatonic scale always sounds good if you play it in the right key
I mean there's a very good reason it's so overused, because it always sounds good. I've never heard a generic pentatonic solo that sounded like trash
I could listen to this all day.
The worlds most 80's guitar sound.
I could watch an entire video on your opening descending lick at 0:14. That was smooth and sick. Nice work.
Keep rockin'.
MK
Hey that's pretty good, You got a superb tone man I love it, great video you really know how to make the licks sound right
a little too much reverb for my taste
oh shut up! lol
+simpletown323 is that a still crazy reference? Lol
Too many gain stages in a row. Not a fan of preAmp distortion. Try less drive and more power tube oomph.
I love it when criticisms don't describe the sound at all, only the technology.
Great playing and instruction. Can’t help but notice you have the pickups almost flush with the pick guard. Works well and brings out the true character of a Strat. Works especially well on clean tones but also allows those great sonic characteristics on high gain settings, as you obviously know. Smart man!
Ritchie Blackmore. I've seen it all cut all the strings off but one you pick one show me what you can do. Well put by a master
Great tone man! Thanks for the lesson.
thank you :)
What amp are you using and which Strat are you playing?
I love Strats, and that one looks awsome with the big headstock and pearly pickguard too. Thank you for the lesson. Your tone is beautiful.
I've just started learning the acoustic, this is crazy stuff to me : )
Sincerely dude, you are the best guitar teacher I have ever seen on UA-cam!
This is the kind of guy you hang out with on a Saturday. Grab a beer, just chill on the couch, and relax.
The Ozzy song where Zakk Wylde plays lick #2 in that ascending pattern you mentioned is "Desire" off of No More Tears. Great song and kickass solo.
What are your hair dryer settings?
Best comment. Good chuckle.
you are the reason i bother reading you tube comments - lol.
Lol....Chicks are probably jealous of that majestic mane.

Great playing. Few have THE touch. You got it.
the picking pattern to jump strings is so important that is almost everything.
your tone is amazing

Thanks man! This lesson pulled me out of the rut I was stuck in.Moving again.
same here! though it's gonna take work for me to make these 'automatic'! heh...
That last lick is pretty much the ascending pattern that leads into the solo on KISS' Love Gun.
I think I've commented before on that fine tube amp/single coil sound you are getting. Really inspiring. Still can't get enough of that seafoam strat as well.
Thank you dude , ive been stuck in a rut with this scale for some time now I cant believe all those where based off minor pent, holy cow you the man!

Great lesson! Excellent playing and articulate instruction. Thank you Robert.
Cool pentatonic licks and Zakk Wylde would approve! Cheers!
