Tetris with ANY Polyomino

- Here's a bunch of design ideas for a Tetris game that uses hexominos, heptominos and theoretically ANY polyominos?
In my last video I made a version of Tetris but with pentominos, which created challenges and made the game slightly worse. Here I'm exploring it further!
Play "Pentis" (Pentomino Tetris, made in Gamemaker Studio 2)
teevy.itch.io/...
bro practically invented block blast
with extra steps

_"Unbelievable!"_
I like the idea of it playing a warning like 'A HUGE PIECE IS APPROACHING FAST' if you're playing tetris and a 12-omino appears in the preview
oh that could be really cool and scary haha
dodecamino
infiniomino
OH NO!!! I HAVE A NOVEMVIGINTOMINO APPROACHING HELP!!!!!!!!
The tetris board when a ducentimino is pulled butta be crazy
generate pieces randomly:
start with monomino
some chance to add a square
(1 - some) chance to finish
that's actually a neat idea, it could work!
imagine you get a piece that's exactly the size of the board, and it disappears instantly. that would be a duocenta-mino (200)
Considering the number of duocentaminos, good luck getting that piece lol
Wouldn't "N-Tis" technically be "N-is"?
Think about it.
Tetr-is
Pent-is
hex...-is?
sept...-is?
n i s - A game with an infinite amount of infinitely large pieces that cover an infinite board with an infinite amount of space. Your goal is simple: create an infinite amount of infinitely large lines that spans across the entire infinite board.
Oh yeah, it could be N-is. Though N-Tis is easier to say lol, but "N.I.S" would be cool. Also that could be fun, nice idea!
@@teevygamez7684 Call it Poly - N - is, or PNis for short.
Monomino Tennis = Monis
Domino Tennis = Dis
Tromino Tennis = Tris
Tetromino Tennis = Tetris
Pentomino Tennis = Pentis
Hexomino Tennis = Hexis
Heptomino Tennis = Heptis
Octomino Tennis = Octis
So therefore Polyomino Tennis = Polyis
@@teevygamez7684 I like Ntris
@Tordek I already made one called Pentis, I'll allow someone else to do the honour of creating PNis lol
This is horrifying im horrified
Ok now I don't have time to watch this but it'll happen eventually
it'll be alright
There is a game that used to function that way called Combinos, but with normal Tetris mechanics. I played the heck out of it but unfortunately this fan game doesn't seem to exist on the web anymore other than being an entry on the Tetris Wiki itself. :(
Yeah, I found it during my research and sad that I couldn't play it, seemed quite cool
Can’t wait to play montis
Taking inspiration from the colour matching idea, what if it's normally just tetrominoes but depending on your total colour regions, chances of a pentomino increase. The more regions you have, the higher the chance, so you'd want to match colours to avoid difficult pieces. If you don't have many regions, a triomino might spawn, making things a bit easier for you.
And on top of that, perhaps in later stages hexominoes also have a chance to appear. That chance is based on your coloured regions as usual, but can be further reduced by making lines involving pentominoes.
Finally, if there are sufficient blocks on the board, but none of the coloured regions are split, and you have at least one region of each colour, and the level is sufficiently high, you can make a sacrifice to the heptomino gods... Your board width increases, but heptominos and higher have a chance of spawning. You will be warned at the start of each level exactly which 7+ -ominoes will appear, but not in what order.
That sounds both cool and scary lol, but I can imagine how fun that could be to play! I suppose with a mechanic like that, it could be nice to have some of the colors mix to cause bonus/rare effects
Hear me out: Tetris with some pieces that are negative, and can remove other pieces.
I love it, no idea how it could be done, like an anti-T piece? Or even crazier, maybe the board would be flipped and the placed pieces would become the empty space... Still though, it would be really interesting
Acid pieces, the Acid and Minos cancel out and because it's a liquid, it can fall
I had a similar idea for a hexomino Tetris that used the "choose which block to place" mechanic from Block Blast but retained the rest of the mechanics from Tetris, so the blocks still fell and had to be controlled like in Tetris if that makes sense
Choosing the next block may be necessary for a game like this so that makes sense. Also you should still try making that if you have the chance!
The fact that you not only mentioned but INCORPORATED Tetris 2 made me really happy!
I always found Tetris 2 to be a bit underrated, yeah its weird but the combination of Tetris and Dr. Mario makes for a pretty interesting experience (in a good way)
And I really like how you incorporated it into this, it fits really well and overall makes this "probably not going to be a game" game WAY more unique and managable :3
Thank you! I actually didn't know about Tetris 2 before my last video, but I'm glad it exists. Playing it really does feel like a sequel to Tetris haha
what if there was like a phase mechanic that would allow you to phase through other peaces to get it in a spot that you wouldn't be able to get to
neat idea, I'm not sure how it could be implemented but it's definitely worth trying!
I think splitting pieces into bags might lead to suboptimal results since if A and B fit well, and B and C fit well, but A and C don't fit well, then you either miss a pair or risk a higher probability of a bad pair of pieces depending on how you split the bags, so you could instead employ a system of probability weighted by how well pieces fit (similarly to a Markov chain) and to automate that system you could simulate a game that automatically picks one of the random pieces that does not currently leave holes and add points to the pair of pieces of current piece and one of the nearby previous pieces, after enough of such simulations enough data will be gathered in the probability matrix to create a usable randomizer. Then the randomizer could also adjust the probabilities to suppress floods/droughts of pieces, or if the randomizer is to conform to the bag system it could temporarily replace probabilities with 0 if they were already used in the bag.
Wow, that could work. I'd love to see someone actually make that! Although I wonder if things could get too predictable with that.
a way N-tis could be more like Tetris could be where you can let the pieces clip into each other by one line, so you can get into the otherwise impossible to get to holes
like
🟪🟪⬛→⬛⬛⬛→⬛⬛⬛
🟪🟪⬛→🟪🟪⬛→⬛⬛⬛
⬛⬛⬛→🟪🟪⬛→🟪🟪⬛
⬜⬜⬜→⬜⬜⬜→🟪🟪⬜
⬜⬜⬜→⬜⬜⬜→⬜⬜⬜
Oh, yeah actually something like that could be nice!
So about that pentris i played in 90s... It did use triminoes tetraminos and pentaminos, so it wasn't pentis, but still painful
I think implimenting a system where, instead of the number of blocks being fixed, perhaps there's a 50/50 chance of adding a block, to the n-omino piece, and if you added a piece, another coin flip would be made, until it ended with a "do not add another block". This way, theoretically every number of n-omino is possible, and the vast majority are small and easy to fill in gaps left by the bigger n-ominos
oh wow, that actually sounds like it could be really cool!
For automatic rotation center you could take the average of positions of all minos and then use either closest center or corner of mino as the rotation center. If it turns out that center of mino and corner of mino are equally close to the average position (such as in L, S, or I tetromino) then use a tie breaker such as whichever one leads to a smaller total bounding box of all four rotation states.
As for the ability to place pieces anywhere on the board I think that you could keep the gravity system but instead have a bunch of kicks in the rotation (like all possible kicks up to some big distance), and if player holds left, right, and/or down when rotating, the kicks would prioritize the direction held (even prioritizing kicks in that direction over basic rotation). This way even if the rotation system isn't specifically designed to allow for T-spin Triple or various generalizations of it, then the player could hold down and rotate which would shove the piece downwards, or for other spin setups the player may force left or right when rotating, and the default rotation would still have balanced priority of up kicks to facilitate in high gravity movement.
The kick could be amazing for this! Not sure how controllable it would be with the bigger pieces though, but it could work. Also for finding the rotation center, that's what I thought as well, except the tie-breaker you mentioned which is a good idea.
I've actually made a tetris game with bigger pieces, inspired by combinos which unfortunately doesn't exist anymore, but it starts as regular tetris, but as you clear lines, rather than speeding up, it increases the piece size. I'm not fully sure how combinos did it, but in my program it starts with only 4-minos, then after 10 lines it's 50% 4minos and 50% 5minos, then after 20 it's 33% 4minos, 33% 5minos and 33% 6minos, etc every ten lines, it was capped at 12 because my computer couldn't generate any more than that, but i've never been able to get further than 8/9minos
That's really cool! And sounds really hard lol. Is there a video or something of it?
I think it would be cool to see a version of tetris where the pieces were generated as you play (likely using a variation of the algorithm at the end) starting with a 2- or 3-omino with say a 50% chance to add more squares to the piece until the 50% is not satisfied (ie a geometric distribution). So most pieces generated would only have 2-4 squares, but sometimes you'd get one with 6 or 7 you'd need to work around.
That could definitely work, would need to be carefully balanced though haha
That's cool and all but I wanna see hexomino tetris /hj
Jokes aside hextris is only x-tris that works fine without changing formula completely bc septris+ have annoying as hell shape that has unreachable square hole in it so ugh
Don't do that pls
This scares me. I was already scared of Pentis. STOP SCARING ME
Random idea: Polykings (connected by corners too)
It gets less scary after the octominos!
Also I didn't know they were called polykings, cool name! And cool shapes too, it could work
@teevygamez7684 they're also called polyplets
TEEVY UPLOAD!!

totally a sponsored vid
by polyominos? or by Tetris 2? cause one of those is a really old game and the other is a mathematical concept lol
