Nice video! Probably worth mentioning that if you use this method, you actually need to measure ½ the amount you want to trim. In your example, if you measure 2”, you’ll be trimming 4” off with the fold. Also, for those with a zipper foot, use a zipper foot instead to get closer to the original hem; and in the absence of a hump jumper, folded fabric under the back of the presser foot works just as well (so you don’t have to raise the presser foot and lose thread tension). Keep ‘em coming!
Yup, that's why I mentioned that the factory hem was a half inch, meaning I would have only taken off an inch and a half if I measured from the bottom.
@@StylishDTailors huh? No, he was talking about the fold not the factory hem. If you take off 2 in of folded fabric you're actually taking off 4 in from the total length of your jeans. Anyways, thanks for the video.
One year ago, I found your video and hemmed my jeans. Since then, I have followed your video two more times and today, a third time. It's the best video for hemming jeans. Thanks!
One of the best UA-cam vids I have seen in a while. Extremely clear, great editing, narration and no fast forwarding through mindless chatter. Thank you!!
Terrific tutorial! I am only 5ft. tall and must hem every pair of pants that I buy even if they say ‘petite’. I have a very old sewing machine which doesn’t have the piece that’s removable, and unfortunately I wasn’t able to sew them on the machine. So I sewed them by hand, which did not take very long and they came out perfectly! Wish I had seen this video sooner, then all of my other jeans would look so much better. TY!
Happy Memorial Day, SD! I tailored some joggers that were too long and wide in the inside seam following your 'sweatpants to jogger' and 'how to hem jeans' tutorials. Found you way back in 2020. Thankful I was finally able to put your teachings to use. This project took less than an hour. I'd rate my final results 7/10. And that's super high because I'm very new to sewing and I'm sometimes sloppy because I'm impatient. ❤❤

Im 5'2 so its really hard to find a jean in both the mens aisle and boys aisle. Apparently, anything from 5' to 5'4 just simply doesn't exist. It's so annoying
Your video gives me the confidence to hem jeans. I am very, very new to sewing. Hubby gave me a sewing machine for my birthday so I could hem his jeans. Really liked the close up shots. Especially the shot showing you pulling the pins out as you sew - duhhhhh I was sticking myself as I was feeding the material. Now I know to remove the pins as I sew the seam. I'll be back for more videos. Thanks.

Recently bought same exact size Levi's that I bought a year ago. Legs were 2 inches longer than old jeans. Go figure, Levi Strauss. Used your method and my new jeans are exactly like the old ones. THANK YOU!
Just WOW! However, my jeans are quite tapered so when I sew the hem up the leg, it ends up with a gathered effect, if you know what I mean, since the hem is narrower than the new position on the leg. Had to unpick the sewing. What to do here? Thank you!!!
This will work if youre only trimming an inch or two, but almost all modern cuts have some degree of taper towards the ankle meaning that the more you remove, the more mismatch there will be between the leg and the cuff.
Hey SD. I've been tailoring my clothes for years because of long torso, arm, neck, short legs and flat… you get it. I’d love to see you branch out and include making us odd body men be able to look as good as you do.
SD, I am curious if you could make a video about using measurements for tailoring clothes? I dont know if you have one already but if I measured myself, or had a tailor give me my measurements, wouldnt this make tailoring my clothes quicker because I can make them match the measurements each time without having to put them on each time first? I appreciate all of your videos and your energetic personality!
Wow i just alter my friend's denim in old method ways before I watch this 😅 maybe next time i can try again with this method, thanks SD. You always being innovative with sewing's idea
This gave me the confidence to try it. Mine didn't turn out perfect (mistakes were made lol). But it turned out quite well for my first hemming. Thanks!!
Love your channel! Have you ever considered tailoringing a game jersey (football)? I always love the way they fit except the billowy shoulders and tiny sleeves (meant for the pads). Is this too big a job to make one fit for casual street wear? Or do you have the magic secret to make it work :-)
I just had to subscribed to your channel when you popped up out of the blue eating crackers and said “I think you should subscribe”. I really got a big kick out of that , it was great! 😆
So I tried this technique today…. Is the material is filed. Is that 4” total? 2” on the outside then 2” on the inside? Maybe I messed up but what I did 3”, I put it up to the other leg that was still long it was like 6” shorter. I moved to it -“1.5” and it was bout 3” from the other leg.
You did it right, it doubles, so when you held the altered leg next to the unaltered one thats why you got those measurements. If you wanted to take off 1 inch for instance you would measure 1/2 and inch instead of 1 inch since it doubles. I hope that makes sense !
@@StylishDTailors ok cool, not sure that the video shows that, I think you said to take 2” off, then measured 2” minus the hem. Aside from that, this video was fantastic. First time trying any of this and it worked out great!!
Do you have to iron them every time after completing this? (I do not have the patience to iron and would rather put in a new hem than keep the factory if ironing is involved.)
You don't HAVE to, you can do whatever you want, but it does look better ironed. That being said if you didn't iron it its not like it would look awful or anything. Only you would notice.
Nope you communicated it perfectly, my comment still stands, you don’t HAVE TO but it’s a good idea. It wouldn’t be super obvious if you didn’t or anything.
Tried it today. It really was this simple. I'd say wear the pants after each step to double confirm the end results are good. And if you stitch them wrong, just go in with a seam ripper. Thread is cheap, having to find new pants to tailor is not. Good luck!

Hey Stylish D, I had a question about the "other" zig zag stitch you mention at 2:13. I'm just starting out, and I was wondering where exactly I should put that zig zag stitch. Do I put right above (or I guess next to) the zig zag pattern left over from cutting with the pinking shears or somewhere else?
@@StylishDTailors Thanks for the response! Oh I think I know what you mean. It is because both are zig zag shaped so you can overlap them? Also, should the settings for this second zigzag stitch be the same as for the first one, or should I experiment with that based on the pattern my pinking shears leave behind (not sure if all pinking shears leave a zigzag pattern of the same length and width)?
