Former Pres Suspected Of Witness Tampering | SCOTUS Takes Tire Iron To Separation Of Church & State

- The former president publicly went after Cassidy Hutchinson after her testimony in front of the Jan. 6th Committee, and he may have attempted to intimidate her behind the scenes as well. Over at the Supreme Court, their recent rulings regarding religion further erode the idea that America's government should operate independently of any church. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Iron? They've taken a FLAMETHROWER to the idea of separation of church and state.
how so?
@@nostrum6410 Making the questionable assumption that you're asking in good faith, this coach was a direct government employee coercing students into an activity tied directly into his personal religious practices at a school event on school grounds, using his position of authority over the students to do so. Additionally, the coach wasn't fired directly for this, but his contract with the school was let to expire due to his insubordination over not stopping doing this in a provocative manner.
It's a very basic separation of church and state case that was dismissed repeatedly by lower courts until it got to the SC, and their ruling shows them to be completely out of step with not only the public understanding of the law but also the American legal establishment's long-held understanding of the interpretation of the Constitution.
This coupled with their assertion that he State of Maine must be compelled to use public money to fund private religious schools and their refusal to rule definitively on the Texas abortion bounty law suggests that the current Supreme Court is ruling not based on Constitutional principles, but based on their own personal opinions about religion and the government.
Law in Common Law countries such as the United States relies on the acceptance of precedence - not as an unquestionable cement tomb, but as a stable bedrock for all legal assumptions on novel questions of the law - in order to allow lawmakers, justices, and lawyers interpret how laws should be built and implemented. What the current SC does is ignore all precedent that it doesn't like when addressing a legal theory, engaging in excessive cherry-picking to reach legal positions that are difficult to intellectually defend. It's creating a chaotic legal environment in the US, which is just about the opposite of what a high court should be doing, and can't even seem to achieve logical consistency between its own rulings offered days apart. The broader trend is a court that rules by fiat rather than by law.
Even if you're asking in bad faith, you really should see this court as it has become; a dangerous force at a time this country needs that the least.

He also called people a "snitch" and a "rat" for telling the truth. Sounds like the Mafia to me.

I played for one of the rival schools in the area, but my dad and mom both graduated from Bremerton, so we follow the area sports, and Kennedy was just a lousy coach, even without all his religious nuttery. If the Supreme Court is allowing a Christian man to yell, "Praise Jesus!" at a public school football game, I wonder how these Supreme Court Justices would feel about an Arab-American yelling, "Allahu akbar! All glory to Allah and his one true prophet Muhammad!" at that game.

Mischief managed.
I get the sentiment and agree but last bit is very wrong. His Last Prophet Sallah Alaih Wasalm not His only Prophet. We do believe Jesus/Isa Alaih Salam was also a Prophet of Allah as was Moses/Musa Alaih Salam.
The coach refused to put kids in the game if they didn’t participate. Not every kid is a Protestant. This is just so wrong.
And now there’s precedent for tuition tax credits. Greaaaaaaat…
So, we are meant to believe that a beautiful young woman worked just down the hall, was in many meetings and managed to be unnoticed by the DJT? 🤣
Who says DJT didn't try to bust a move on her? That's the question NOT to be asked at the Jan. 6 committee hearing. HOWEVER:
Melanie could have it asked at her divorce hearing IF it's not a violation of her prenup.

In regards to the prayer on public school property, I have a hard time believing that the Court's ruling would have favored allowing a Muslim coach leading students in praying to Mecca at midfield after the game. Pretending that this court composition is anything more than a cudgel for right-wing agenda items that can't be passed via popular legislation is why nobody trusts the institution anymore. Meanwhile, they're more worried about, "who leaked the draft that we knew would be grossly unpopular?"
what if the team was all Muslims?

Doing away with church and state separation is an ok idea. So let's do it the right way. We can start with the Roman Catholic Church and dump all those scruffy Evangelicals and squabbling Protestants. The Jewish Synagogues can come in and we can bring in some Sunni and Shiite sects.

There's an argument to be made that it was the student's religious freedoms being violated and not the coach's freedoms. The students might feel compelled to pray alongside the coach due to the significant power difference between coaches and players. Especially for players aiming for a college scholarship, the coach holds significant power over them and they may feel obligated to adhere (or pretend to adhere) to the religious views of the coach.
so they have to fake it like most politicians
That is the argument, not an argument.

Yup. Stochastic terrorism is all the rage with the GOP. You just say "boy, somebody should really do something about X", knowing that someone in your extremist audience will. The school didn't even fire that football coach. He quit after the school asked him not to do the prayer.
Yes! They gave him paid leave (sounds nice) then offered to renew his contract and he said no.
I seem to recall there being a verse where Christ tells you not to make a public display of prayer (ah yes, Matthew 6:5). Seems like these Jesus freaks can't even get their own religion right.
It's a good thing giving false testimony's not one of the 10 commandments.

Before I knew anything about this praying thing I had this conversation with my mom who said there was nothing wrong with what this guy was doing because he was praying by himself and students wanted to join him. Then I see the story and I see all the subtleties that make this action by the coach wrong. He knew what he was doing by going on to the field where students can see him. He is someone who holds a position of authority and I'm sure the students want to impress him because he makes decisions for them. So he is not separating his religion from the school and he is influencing the students. I just wonder if he was a Muslim coach with Muslim students doing the same thing you think all these right wingers would agree? But this is what they miss. They missed the fact that it's subtle little things that make it wrong.
You know the answer. They would have a holy fit.
It wasn’t even subtle when some were acting like cult members trampling others.
Be interesting if a bunch of Muslims, Jews, Hindis, anything non-Christian really, started praying after games on the field. Or better yet, get someone on the field before the game praying, and refuse to move until your prayers are over, in 2 hours.
Prayer vigal for the prayer victims... hilarious, that why your the king of late night!
Like AOC said, it's the responsibility of the other two branches of government to restrain the overreach of the supreme court. If they do nothing, they are complicit in the abuse of power.
Unfortunately, it's not that easy. The legislative branch, in theory, could enshrine the principles of Roe V Wade into law, but they lack the votes in the Senate to practically do that.
@@nrdy2theXtreme It's not just Roe v Wade. A lot of their decisions in the past week have shown that the Court is incapable of the job set before it. That is a threat to government itself, to American citizens, and the country as a whole. There are other ways to reprimand the Court, and I hope that the President and Congress throw the book at them. Whether Biden has the spine remains to be seen, but I hope those mad enough in Congress keep up their momentum anyway.
@@kaylinsmith6921 Congress could move to impeach justices, they could try to expand the court, neither will happen in the current Congress. I'm not sure what recourse you think the President has to "throw the book" at the court.
You obviously disagree with the decisions they're making, but it's all legal. This is the way the constitution is written. I also disagree with their recent reversal of Roe and the erosion of our bedrock separation of church and state principles. It's up to Congress to rewrite the code so those principles are enshrined in law and unassailable. The politics of the last ten years led us here and we won't fix it overnight.

@@yudithcaron8053 Bubbles, yes, thoughtful comment, no.
So it would be perfectly fine to offer prayers and perform rituals to the flying spaghetti monster on school grounds now?
I'm gonna be a total That Guy, and I'm sorry, and I agree with the sentiment of your post, but _technically_ the sports fields owned by schools aren't considered 'school grounds,' they're more of an adjunct to said grounds. It's all complicated, and that's entirely on purpose so schools can continue making a profit off of their branding deals even though they're supposed to be only functional as a non-profit division of the government. You are or aren't allowed to do anything on said field that the custodian of that field (usually the school principle) deems appropriate.
Which just makes the whole thing more maddening since that means the SCOTUS isn't forcing their morality just on schools, but also on all extra-curricular activities, whether they happen on school grounds or not. It opens the door a lot more of this type of crap, like mandated prayers before prom and pictures of Jesus hanging on the walls of dances to remind the kids to not get handsy.
