@Theslayer Gaming The quills all point towards the back end of the porcupine, so you can pet it in that direction without getting stabbed, same with it crawling in my lap, if it moved forwards it wouldn't prick me, but if it had decided to move backwards it would've torn me up a little, their quills are very smooth when you pet them properly! But it was definitely nerve-wracking because the animal absolutely could have hurt me very badly if it wanted to, it took a good deal of trust between both of us.

That's not a growl, that's called stridulating! It's a sound made by rubbing two parts of their body together; many crickets use it to make noise, as do animals like catfish and spiders!

A lady who worked with porcupines visited my elementary school, I do not remember what is for, but I remember coming home with a porcupine quill she gave me. It has been over 10 years and I'm still upset about losing that quill.

I LOVE these guys =) we had a little one in our zoo, which basically grew on my hands =) his dad absolutely loooooved belly and chin rubs and scratches =) and a prickly tongue almost like cats do =) also worth mentioning that the longest quills are just to make them look bigger, they're quite fragile and doesn't possess much of a threat.. the dangerous ones are rather small and thick, those around and at the tail.. those are no joke.. aaand those quills aren't poisonous (for some weird reason some ppl think they are)

Just as a side hustle and promo for the animals you should accentuate the barb with a bit of precision whittling and sell the quills as high end knitting or crochet needles. So long as it doesn’t hurt the animals to collect them I think it could be a great fundraiser.

I used to work with one and he was the cutest spikey puppy ever. He’d just crawl in ur lap and let you pet him but there was nothing you could do once he was there or else you risk him accidentally poking you
i raise North American porcupines as part of being a wildlife rehabber and i have to say they are one of the sweetest, gentlest, and most loving animals out there. so much Q love!!!

One small error: The tips of African porcupine quills are smooth. Only American porcupines have barbed quills, for some reason.

Arrows are not barbed. Arrow heads also known as broad heads can be barbed but most commonly are not.

Knowing the squeaky little talk they do when happy with people puts a whole different spin on that vicious hissing growl.
They shake their quills against each other to create that noise, like a cluster of tiny boomwhackers. You can still see them vibrating afterwards.
