@deee 327 there's a dam in East Tennessee that is moving down stream every year. Its no where near as big, nor holding back as much water but its moving. MrChrissquared18 How about this?.... A study by seismologists at the China Earthquake Administration, a government agency, has confirmed that the massive Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze River has “significantly increased” seismic activity along the dam’s reservoir. The study, recently obtained by Toronto-based Probe International, supports Chinese press reports and anecdotal evidence from Chinese citizens living in the vicinity of the Three Gorges Dam, and helps to explain the numerous landslides that have caused havoc in the region, necessitating the evacuation of 300,000 people. Part of the study in Probe International’s possession had earlier been published in a Chinese journal. According to the Chinese study, which Probe International scientists have translated, seismic monitors around the reservoir and in Hubei Province registered 3,429 earthquakes between June of 2003 (when inundation of the reservoir began) and December 31, 2009. “This represents a 30-fold increase in frequency over the pre-dam period,” according to Patricia Adams, executive director of Toronto-based Probe International and English editor of the translated study
So, in essence, the Three Gorges Dam was built on the path of the fault lines. All it takes is a future earthquake of a 7-9 magnitude quake to collapse the dam. The rainy season makes matters worse. All that rain, flooding, and a bad earthquake takes out the Three Gorges Dam. Wow,!!!
I marvel at humans audacity to look the other way in the face of science. Im a environmentalist not a engineer, so i marvel at nature. Butterflies are starting to migrate from the rockies to Mexico. Would you like to build a marvelous wall to stop the migration??
is anybody here reading this in 2020? it currently is at 160metres and the max capacity before over flooding - potentially breakthrough is 175metres.. its kinda scary when you think how close it is to breaking... and the fact they have alot more rain this weak is big .. wonder how china cover this one up... blame USA ?? who knows

Thank you for your well balanced report that allows me to make considered decisions. Opinions are always variable. It does not surprise me that the dam is not keeping up with electrical demand as the population is growing exponentially. 1M+ a year according to some stats.
I wonder why Americans and Europeans always criticise anything done by other peoples. This project is one of the greatest human achievements in history and there's nothing good that have no dark side. The displaced population have been accommodated elsewhere and chines are one of the happiest peoples on earth.
We are just into July, 2020 and the world has seen almost everything. What more ? A dam break ? A world war ? A double pandemic ? Hope I can sleep through to 2021
I have been to China. As with many things in life there is always a trade off. In my opinion modernization of China is well worth the risk. If environmentalist had their way humanity would have never progressed beyond basket weaving, and everyone would die for nutritional deficiencies because they are only allowed to eat vegetables. Hydroelectric power generation is far better than using coal
When you interfere with natural river flow then the water weigh collected up stream alone can stress the earth structure then earth quake and all kind of other problem including sudden heavy rain
2 million people is still a lot of people no matter China's population... If this were a US state, it would rank higher than 13 other states. Or it would be like trying to relocate everyone in a city the size of Houston... no small feat.
I think the Chinese deserve praise for their efforts and accomplishments. This damn is a fantastic feat of engineering and a boon to China. Everything in life has a good side and a bad side but in this case, the good outweighs the bad by billions of tons.
Click bait waste of our time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many people ask why was the Three Gorges Dam built? Well, it was constructed to control flooding. But since it was completed, the Yangtze has actually flooded more often, with the year 2010 (some two years after the dam’s completion), being the worst on record for flooding events. In one of the worst floods, some 500 people were killed in North China, resulting in an entire village being wiped out.
Just wait until the Taiwanese or the US hit it with powerful conventional or nuclear weapons to breach it.That'll be a well-deserved kick in the CCP's ass.
I love how the video glosses over the giant leap forward and the cultural revolution - two of the biggest man-Made economic and cultural disasters with uncounted millions of casualties and causing huge cultural and economic losses - as 'Economic Instability'
I agree Yen Tao. There is a much stronger case for the positives of the dam than for the negative. There will never be another flood to claim millions of lives while this dam holds. Every day, tens of millions of people directly benefit and the country as a whole benefits from this dam and the industry and commerce it supports. This video is not balanced and poorly researched.
As of 2018, the Dam was recovering its capital cost of 25 billion U.S. dollars every 28 months-so it certainly isn't a financial disaster! And it has saved millions from drowning in semi-annual floods.
I am praying that the Chinese dam does NOT fail. T loss of life would be tragic. The Oroville dam in CA came so close to failing in 2016. 200,000 people were evacuated. Turns out the governors and other state officials were at fault. And in case you don't know, CA is riddled with fault lines, the most deadly being the San Andres fault line.
Actually, the Oroville dam itself was completely fine. The evacuation was due to the threat of the emergency spillway failing, which is much less of an issue compared to the dam actually failing (the emergency spillway and spillway aren't located on the dam).
Speculative? Come on Sunny. Get your head out of your ass. There has been increases of earthquakes and landslides. Hopeful that nothing else happens, but the potential is there.
erling cantik Need data? Go to collect it and you'll get arrested in China as a spy. That is unless your Chinese provided "minder" or "host" agrees that your data does no harm to the party line.

The damming of rivers is almost always a tragedy I believe. Rivers are unique ecosystems and while dams give relatively sort term benefits - given the maintenance they require -they significantly change the nature of sediment outwash and start damaging processes both upstream and downstream. I would have hoped the Yangtse could have been spared most of the downsides of industrialisation since it is happening in the 21st century, but the fact the Baiji is probably gone for good after living in the Yangtze for millions of year is testament to the damage that has sadly been done to it.
Yeah damming a river is bad; blah blah blah. When was the last time Colorado river reached the ocean? Oh, diverting 100% of its water is technically not damming a river. I get it!
@Dawson Davis The Baiji and the Yangtse Paddlefish are gone. Millions of years of evolution lost in one decade. All Yangtse species have been devastated. The Three gorges reservoir may exist for a few hundred years - not nearly enough time to develop a unique ecosystem.
It's true that the US has built similar projects, and with accompanying problems. What is not really that subjective is that in their zeal to complete this project, many shortcuts were taken by the Chinese gov't, and we may not know whether the gamble will be without consequences for decades. Personally, I hope the dam continues to function without incident, as the country needs the power and other benefits derived. If it does collapse, there will be no shortage of those saying "I told you so".
Who are these experts claiming that the mass of this structure would "actually cause earthcakes"? Silly nonsense... Landslides cause by dams is a result of waterlogged soil from the water build up in the reservoir, not the mass of the dam structure itself. If that were true, much smaller dams wouldn't suffer from landslides to the same extent? There are plenty of examples of that out there.
What sort of frosting do you put on an earthcake? You have not only the weight of the dam, there is also the weight of the water held back by that dam. And then the fact that the whole thing is in an earthquake zone, with plenty of fault lines, is something you might want to keep in mind.
People live in dangerous places and call it a disaster when their sense of entitlement to live anywhere they want without consequences has some. Large dams are monstrosities meant to make money for large government/corporate entities.
DonCervantes Considering China’s GDP has sky rocketed, caught the US and will surpass it in the next decade (if it already has not) it’s a safe bet pure economic communism didn’t cause that. I’m no fan of China and think a lot of what their government does is messed up but acting like they are strictly a communist nation doesn’t match the facts about their economy.
Wait...this video has factual and well researched info, complete with historic and cultural context? Presented in a non obnoxious way, without electronic music blasting over it? Am I still on youtube?
You forgot to mention the disaster that occurred with the dam preventing the yearly small floods that bring millions of tons of sediment downriver, sustaining both river fisheries as well as cropland. Even with fish ladders, dams destroy rivers.
It has only taken ninety years, but China’s leaders have finally admitted that the Three Gorges Dam is a disaster. With Wen Jiabao at the helm, the State Council noted last week that there were “urgent problems” concerning the relocation effort, the environment and disaster prevention that would now require an infusion of US$23 billion on top of the $45 billion spent already.
Regarding the comment, at least a venomous snake won't pretend to be your friend in order to screw you over. Yeah, I would take venomous snakes any day. At least you know where you stand.
The Sansha Dam will collapse within three years, disrupting the economy as well as many people living nearby. It is expected that a large population in Shanghai will be destroyed.
How is it a disaster? Analysis driven by jealousy over other citizens of this world achievements. If it’s American built it would be touted as an engineering masterpiece of the century.
the more you grow, the more your enemies will grow with you. jealousy, superiority, pride, arrogance is what led many conflicts, wars and hatred between nations, states... this will continue till extinguish of humankind, why? just look at history, it literally repeats itself with different names and context but the outcome is pretty much the same.
Twenty five BILLION ? What the hell . There are plenty of people with so much wealth they could have built it themself . How Can anyone be so rich that the biggest construction project on earth would not even consume half their money ? How can this be !

There was a time when the US also was capable of doing big projects, but that was before the country was given to the billionaires.
Bob Jackson what about the giant ass sea wall in new Orleans lol
That was before too much government regulation.
wrong, it was before eco terrorists took over and made anti big project regulations
It wasn't the US that was given to the billionaires. It was the entire planet.
Wow,!!!
It's an engineering marvel, not a disaster.
An engineering marvel, an environmental disaster.
I marvel at humans audacity to look the other way in the face of science. Im a environmentalist not a engineer, so i marvel at nature. Butterflies are starting to migrate from the rockies to Mexico. Would you like to build a marvelous wall to stop the migration??
sing a different song if ya lived in the flood plane!
is anybody here reading this in 2020? it currently is at 160metres and the max capacity before over flooding - potentially breakthrough is 175metres.. its kinda scary when you think how close it is to breaking... and the fact they have alot more rain this weak is big .. wonder how china cover this one up... blame USA ?? who knows
Limit your video to the subject matter you reference in your title.
Many people protested this. People traveled to the three gorges to see beauty. Ancient historical sites are under tons of water.
"Shackled by local corruption" a simple way of saying every level of corrupt officials took about 25% of the total so when the money got to those it was supposed to compensate, they got about 5% of what they should have.
*Communism*
My wife and I took a 4 day tour boat in 2009 from Yichang up the Yangtze through the dam to Chonqing. Quite a trip.

The only man-made disaster here is the uploader's virgin sounding voice.
Thank you for your well balanced report that allows me to make considered decisions. Opinions are always variable. It does not surprise me that the dam is not keeping up with electrical demand as the population is growing exponentially. 1M+ a year according to some stats.
This dam video was made in 2017 ! But today it's 100% viable. An earthquake is predicted this month July 9th, 2020. Flooding is out of control !
How did your prediction work out?
I wonder why Americans and Europeans always criticise anything done by other peoples. This project is one of the greatest human achievements in history and there's nothing good that have no dark side. The displaced population have been accommodated elsewhere and chines are one of the happiest peoples on earth.
everything has two sides as the video said. this dam provides china tons of clean enegy, but yet a lot of trouble as well
We are just into July, 2020 and the world has seen almost everything.
Boy, when that thing goes, and it’s just a matter of time before it does, it’ll be like a watery hell!
I bet there’s some monster catfish there ,
Forget cungpow chicken I want sum catfish gigawawat eh2fey
Plenty of 🍚 to go with!!!
Personally the amount of electricity that it can provide. Doesn’t make up for all the lives lost and damage to the environment.
When you interfere with natural river flow then the water weigh collected up stream alone can stress the earth structure then earth quake and all kind of other problem including sudden heavy rain
You could be very right here!!
There's another video with same title. Guess what, the video came out 11 years ago and 3 gorges dam still there. Lmfao 😂
Hope the dam holds up better than the crap they send here.
Minor detail: the "crap" you receive were built exactly to your specification.
perfect reply!
Nobody SCHTOOPID REPLY! built to fit. NOT built to be reliable, or last! Ask an electrician or mechanic.
Timothy Brown crap u buy is produce by u r own people made in China as for the dam is produce by China by the Chinese don't worry the dam dam strong
"Damn" Bee Lee.
I like the way how you approach this from a fairly objective angle with both pros and cons presented
2 million people is nothing in china dude
2 million people is still a lot of people no matter China's population... If this were a US state, it would rank higher than 13 other states. Or it would be like trying to relocate everyone in a city the size of Houston... no small feat.
I think the Chinese deserve praise for their efforts and accomplishments. This damn is a fantastic feat of engineering and a boon to China. Everything in life has a good side and a bad side but in this case, the good outweighs the bad by billions of tons.
Best part of video begins at 8:12
You can say anything but it is world's best piece of civil engineering...
Everything is got side effects
20billion dollars, the equivalent of 10 B2 bombers.
Zsari Maxim B2 will kill the same amount of people this dam saves.
David Liu only if people fuck with us!
How much did the latest US aircraft carrier cost? And for what?
50 cents an hour sure goes a long way.
Or New Jersey state troopers' overtime budget for a year.
In case someone gets confused, it's 22 Gigawatts of power. Around half of all the countries use from a tenth to a third of this power each.
Click bait waste of our time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh dear. It is 'strong suit.' How embarrassing for you.
So anyway, that’s used up my seeing exclamation marks and giving a shit about them for the year. What are you girls arguing about?
*Cole Linse. What's a "stong suite?", or an im, or an isnt? I guess English isn't your strong suit!
dunruden you literally are criticising me for an autocorrect error?
Reference Citizen I don't like your attitude.
Best dam video I’ve seen in a while
Not sure why every seems so but hurt over this. My only problem is the title which could be changed to potential man made disaster.
Right. Any damn dam can fail. This one just has some factors that lean to OH SHIT side of things. Only time will tell if it will hold or not.
Isn't one Chinese disaster enough for one video? I totally agree with you, but let's take it one disaster at a time.
@@bluegregory6239 I’m afraid first two could be used to explain the impending one…
All thanks to our USA engineering and technology. We have given the world everything, that was invited at our expense. This has got to stop.
Yes we are riddled with fault lines, the most dangerous is the Hayward Fault- NOT the San Andreas.
Frances Lambert sorry your false, the cascadia is by far the worst. It's earthquake would be 4 times as much as the San Andreas could produce
well, in its design, the dam wont even collapse by being nuked with a 100 thousand tons equivalent nuclear bomb.
Actually, the Oroville dam itself was completely fine. The evacuation was due to the threat of the emergency spillway failing, which is much less of an issue compared to the dam actually failing (the emergency spillway and spillway aren't located on the dam).
It's China, so who really cares anyway?
More clickbait nonsense. Heard this repeated every year for the last 9 years. Same old same old...
5 years later and the comments are still speculative in nature. Please provide some evidence.
Speculative? Come on Sunny. Get your head out of your ass. There has been increases of earthquakes and landslides. Hopeful that nothing else happens, but the potential is there.
Jordendog.... where is the data proof .... stupid
erling cantik Need data? Go to collect it and you'll get arrested in China as a spy. That is unless your Chinese provided "minder" or "host" agrees that your data does no harm to the party line.

4:15 Your example of someone trying to ignore something. Funny and accurate.
While this video was going on, 180 lin. meters of a six-lane highway were built in China.
And you say - birds, fish... Roads are a top priority for China.

$25 billion. Not bad, That's fifty Solyndras and its doing its job.
May they can build trumps wall
The damming of rivers is almost always a tragedy I believe. Rivers are unique ecosystems and while dams give relatively sort term benefits - given the maintenance they require -they significantly change the nature of sediment outwash and start damaging processes both upstream and downstream. I would have hoped the Yangtse could have been spared most of the downsides of industrialisation since it is happening in the 21st century, but the fact the Baiji is probably gone for good after living in the Yangtze for millions of year is testament to the damage that has sadly been done to it.
What about The Mekong River and the dams that are destroying one of the most productive fisheries on the planet? That's another one.
Yes, that is a horrible project. Also the projects in Malaysia and Brazil. Flooding forest and displacing native peoples, it is disgusting.
Yeah damming a river is bad; blah blah blah. When was the last time Colorado river reached the ocean? Oh, diverting 100% of its water is technically not damming a river. I get it!
5 years later and the comments are still speculative in nature. Please provide some evidence.
@Dawson Davis The Baiji and the Yangtse Paddlefish are gone. Millions of years of evolution lost in one decade. All Yangtse species have been devastated. The Three gorges reservoir may exist for a few hundred years - not nearly enough time to develop a unique ecosystem.
It is displaced now 2020..
This not a man made disaster? Brother please, maybe not your man made disaster 😕
Watch the water.
It's always amazing how governments are so willing to risk the lives of others.
If it prevents floods as big as those that happened historically it actually saves lives
What a load of rehashed rubbish.
CNN is needing you!
lol!
They should have said the increased mass of the water would cause quakes.
What sort of frosting do you put on an earthcake? You have not only the weight of the dam, there is also the weight of the water held back by that dam. And then the fact that the whole thing is in an earthquake zone, with plenty of fault lines, is something you might want to keep in mind.
It’s built on 2 tectonic plates so it’s likely to cause earthquakes
If you took the weight of all the materials in the dam, it would not hold a candle to the weight of all the water behind it.
1:07 ....
People live in dangerous places and call it a disaster when their sense of entitlement to live anywhere they want without consequences has some. Large dams are monstrosities meant to make money for large government/corporate entities.
"economic instability" aka communism
Don't know much about China or their current economic system do you Brenden?
DonCervantes Considering China’s GDP has sky rocketed, caught the US and will surpass it in the next decade (if it already has not) it’s a safe bet pure economic communism didn’t cause that. I’m no fan of China and think a lot of what their government does is messed up but acting like they are strictly a communist nation doesn’t match the facts about their economy.
Your narration is everywhere dude...
July 2020
yeah lets see what happens.
We're close
Wait...this video has factual and well researched info, complete with historic and cultural context? Presented in a non obnoxious way, without electronic music blasting over it?
Am I still on youtube?
Fake and twisted commentary shame on yoy
Nothing like a cup of tea, a spliff and some disaster porn before I go to work.
You forgot to mention the disaster that occurred with the dam preventing the yearly small floods that bring millions of tons of sediment downriver, sustaining both river fisheries as well as cropland. Even with fish ladders, dams destroy rivers.
An adult voice would have helped.
We need fusion
They are working on a fusion reactor as we speak .. and its looking very promising
Regarding the comment, at least a venomous snake won't pretend to be your friend in order to screw you over.
Yeah, I would take venomous snakes any day. At least you know where you stand.
The dam holds so much water that it has changed the wobble in the earth's rotation.
Ralph Craig thereby creating climate change.
The Sansha Dam will collapse within three years, disrupting the economy as well as many people living nearby. It is expected that a large population in Shanghai will be destroyed.
With the flooding it could happen at any time.
Hope chinese dam can block all water from India
SSMART water flows from China to India, you dump!
“Dump”
Nice history lesson. Now about the Dam.
25 billion? chump change to the pentagon. the three gorges dam is a breath taking gamble.

How is it a disaster? Analysis driven by jealousy over other citizens of this world achievements. If it’s American built it would be touted as an engineering masterpiece of the century.

DES PRO And am agreed with you totally my friend. Very true.
@@georgeikinya2779 the sad truth my friend. But there are always also good people :)
So you move the people above the dam so they don't die, then leave the ones below the dam in harm's way. Sounds like a great plan.
Twenty five BILLION ? What the hell . There are plenty of people with so much wealth they could have built it themself . How Can anyone be so rich that the biggest construction project on earth would not even consume half their money ? How can this be !
