Rare Chord: Sin7♭♭2♭♭6 (harmony in 31-edo)

- Abstravoyant explores winding lines, densely packed with tiny shimmering intervals.
theory stuff:
- The smallest step of 31edo is one of my favorite things about the entire tuning. There are so many useful cases for it. It can structurally relevant or purely ornamental. I love adding it in various areas of vertical structure to produce the characteristic shimmer effect you hear in my 31edo works.
- I started formalizing all the various basic shimmerblock combinations (where you purely add a shimmer effect to a perfect fifth). During that process I started working on this piece. The main object is R - bb2 - 5 - bb6. This object fascinated me because without careful treatment it can quickly sound like wrong notes or phasing from being out of tune. However, writing bb2 and bb6 is ugly and often these shimmersteps occur alongside 2 and 6 respectively, causing the shimmer to be a non-structural, primarily ornamental expansion. In hand writing, I notate these shimmer objects with non numeral symbols so they don't take up extension numbers.
This piece was actually started along time ago when I was first making the rare chords video series but I just didn't like part of it and only just finished it!

The idea of layering pitches like that to create a shimmer effect is *absolutely brilliant* 👏
It is not unlike how Indonesian music is made, they detune their instruments to incorporate a "shimmering" effect that gives it life. It's very interesting and I wish western music gave different tuning systems a chance.
@@squidwardtentacles6338 Indeed! I feel like a small handful of western musicians are starting to notice and appreciate tunings from other culture, but I really wish the default reaction from most of us wasn't still the dismissive "out of tune" knee jerk without even giving them a chance :(
Hey I listen to your music! Cool seeing you in a comment section.
@@uraniidumbra5219 your feeligns are irrational
@@Fire_Axus i don't think music is something that HAS to be rational. Musical theory suggests how to write, but doesn't restrain. In my opinion, when you compose, as long as someone likes it, and especially yourself, it's great!
This sounds like an actually composed version of what hooking modular synths up to mushrooms sounds like.
And I'm in love with every second of it.
I love how it works as a way to put a unison on any note you want. Gorgeous
This sounds like if the main character just won the toughest battle of their life, and they’re looking at the scenery, breathing in deeply, while the different shots of the scenery are flashing by
This sounds like video game music, but specifically for the very last level as you make your way to the final boss
reminds me of breath of the wild
that maj7#11‡18 has awesome emotional tension! also that pseudo-ji A7 motif is incredible
excellent voice leading as usual and a much needed cathartic listen... the bb2/bb6 resolve so nicely
This is absolutely mind melting. I cant understand the first thing about how this works theory wise, but it is so ethereal and beautiful to no end.
This one to me sounds a lot like a microtonal version of Kapustin's pieces. The chaotic rhythmic dots in the bass and the quick jumps between really juicy jazzy chords as well as the falling octaves in the ending really remind me of his work.
this sounds like being really stuck on a problem and getting really pissed at it
This sounds like nothing I've heard. What a rich and beautiful sound.
Crunchy as a nature valley bar. I dig it!
the infor"31edo"mation 🙂
Nice to hear from you again in this brilliant 31-ized E minor!
that thing at measure 62 is just heart wrenching.
Came here to say the same thing. Well done as always Zhea
this was beautiful af. makes me want to get into music composition
i keep going back to 0:43-0:47 sounds like it came out straight from an epic videogame
bars 16-17 are absolutely insane that's a fucking cluster WOW
the chromatic aberration effect on the video is how this music feels
ur voice lessions are as deep as ur music, if i start saving money now i could get one of your keyboards by....maybe before i m 85-90 yrs old? yeah, goals.
5/8 groove is so amazing
never bad, everything sounds soooo goood
absolutely amazing. i’m picking music theory back up now. i refuse to give up.
this sets up phrases i never knew i was expecting like what kinda fuckin jazz fuckery is this??? i love it
i always find myself coming back to this, i think i've listened to it about 6 times by now. it's just so good!!
Really cool! Reminds me of a gamelan. Definitely a more controled way of achieving that sort of effect.
Using this effect in a composition i'm working on!
The QUEEN is back
its just like detuning one oscillator on a synthesizer. same sound❤
Your chord sounds always beautiful ❤
Brilliant, and super inspiring!
Beautiful. I love the constant B/C note that you can hear, almost like a sympathetic drone of some kind
this is one of the most beautiful pieces lf music I've ever heard omg
This sounds so foregin yet so familiar at the same time, like an ancient human ritual being chanted
my perfect pitch is saying no but my body is saying yes
beautiful sound
Fantastic as always
WOW
brain tickles
Natural chorus. So nice
This is so much amazing music compressed. Any of those phrases could be used to base a whole piece on
THIS SOUNDS SO GOOD, HOW???
Fantastic Sound🤩
I always been interested in your work and would love to have you on one of my streams for an interview or discussion
If that is something you would be comfortable with/interested in, it would be awesome to learn about how you got into microtonality and hear about your musical background!

This sounds really beautiful to me
Incredible!
stunning sound
also looks very fun to play (i dont have a lumatone though☹️)
Super cool! I think it does sound like shimmering but I think it also could be described as like... plane shifting. Like the sound is rapidly shifting in and out of an ethereal state or something. At least for me. Anyways, it's a fascinating sound! 😄💜
Extremely dope 👍🏼
beginning giving ravel
I have no clue what is going on here theoretically but I love listening to all of this stuff. If this is publishable I'd beg you to do it.
The part at :35 is amazing! ❤
Gonna steal these. Thanks babe.
Awesome!
incredible
That was intense
This interval sounds vaguely like a honky-tonk, I actually really like it
omg yes i love these
I have no idea of what's going on but i love it
Wonderful
this goes hard af
Horse Lords madly taking notes for their next album.
This is sososo cool hell yeah!!!
i don't know a lot about music theory but i want to put this piece in my mouth
edit: i know a little more than what i did before and my opinion still stands
it sounds like blue raspberry flavoured popping candy, out on the seven seas
@@undesiradude wait you're kinda right
Heard some sounds I never heard before today
wtf you're incredible
YES
winding lines of flight, rupturing to invent 😵🙌
legendary
oh my goodness! please make more music! pleeaase! it's so unique!
This reminds me of how my dreams feel just after i start waking from them.
You have been missed.
Candy for the ears.
the bb2 and bb6 six to give fifths that iridescent (only word I can use) quality is so cool!! i wonder what it would sound like if those pitches were on the reverse side instead of on top? like, a dd6 and a... 30 edo, whatever its called. I'm just now getting really into this tuning system and I love it, I'm super excited to try and use it in my own compositions in the future!
(bar 63 to the end is so dope)
du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du du 🥰
Babe wake up, new Zheanna video just dropped!
I neeeeeed more😭😭, I'd love you hear a collab between you and Jacob collier
are there any like guides on what the special notation means? idk what the things like "sin" or "upshimmer"or "rose" mean so itd be awesome if there was like one place to find wverything
could be nice to let the beautiful glossy ring at the end sound further, w.out splicing. thnx
Amazing, thanks for the upload!! I played it at 0.25 speed and it is 😮😮❤😮😊
sounds like the unison of a synthesizer
I'm proper jealous of your music theory knowledge! I thought I knew something, but this stuff is way over my head. 😅 It sounds incredible though!
cool
dude that was insaaaaaane, fuckin love you
Awesome stuff! What's the process for recording, are you playing it on a lumatone?
This is so sick!! Can i sample this?
WOW 💯💯💯💯💯💯
dig it
I don't understand it but it sounds amazing
showed this to me mum, she grimaced and fuckin ran away after a bit
to be fair, she thinks JAZZ is "too dissonant" so idk what i was expectin-
anyways I FUCKIN LOVE THIS, microtonal hatred is thankfully not a gene :D
Amazing shit.
Ok, I’m back, this is really something. Are you on any music platform? I could listen to a whole album of your experimenting with this shimmering thing. Hats off to you.
Hello, the idea of creating microtonal music has been in my head for a long time. This is very interesting and unusual! I think that in the future such a sound may become commonplace and there will be more such music. I wanted to ask, in what program is it possible to reproduce non-tempered sounds? In what program were you able to achieve such a sound? Sorry for my bad English.
How did you use such low notes? Using 31-tet in my daw I run out of notes because 88 aren't enough in the piano roll.
MPE enabled. I’ve got 8 octaves. :)
Oh ok thanks!@@ZheannaErose
hi zhea! as well as your own composed works, are there seminal works in 31-EDO that someone with budding interest should give analytical effort towards? also, if there are any research papers or such that one could also engage with on the topic, either in a purely theoretical manner or in practice? thank you in advance!
I love your music but what do you use to make 31 edo songs?
👋👏👏
Brain stimulation ✔️
What do you use to edit your videos?
even the resolutions sound harsh and frantic, but it all just works and sounds phenomenal. hats off
I wish these were a bit slower so you have time to soak in these shimmer chords
How do you even compose such things? 5/8 microtonal chords that sound and feel completely cohesive 😮. Do you use music theory or do you just try to improvise on a microtonal piano?
Those things aren't mutually exclusive. Especially in microtonal theory which can be made -up on the spot- to describe what was observed to "work".
I have an important question: Rare as in steak rare, or as in very uncommon?
What does the "sin" chord mean
sin = subMinor
min = minor
