Rare Chord: Sin7♭♭2♭♭6 (harmony in 31-edo)

  • Abstravoyant explores winding lines, densely packed with tiny shimmering intervals.
    theory stuff:
    - The smallest step of 31edo is one of my favorite things about the entire tuning. There are so many useful cases for it. It can structurally relevant or purely ornamental. I love adding it in various areas of vertical structure to produce the characteristic shimmer effect you hear in my 31edo works.
    - I started formalizing all the various basic shimmerblock combinations (where you purely add a shimmer effect to a perfect fifth). During that process I started working on this piece. The main object is R - bb2 - 5 - bb6. This object fascinated me because without careful treatment it can quickly sound like wrong notes or phasing from being out of tune. However, writing bb2 and bb6 is ugly and often these shimmersteps occur alongside 2 and 6 respectively, causing the shimmer to be a non-structural, primarily ornamental expansion. In hand writing, I notate these shimmer objects with non numeral symbols so they don't take up extension numbers.
This piece was actually started along time ago when I was first making the rare chords video series but I just didn't like part of it and only just finished it!

The idea of layering pitches like that to create a shimmer effect is *absolutely brilliant* 👏

It is not unlike how Indonesian music is made, they detune their instruments to incorporate a "shimmering" effect that gives it life. It's very interesting and I wish western music gave different tuning systems a chance.

@@squidwardtentacles6338 Indeed! I feel like a small handful of western musicians are starting to notice and appreciate tunings from other culture, but I really wish the default reaction from most of us wasn't still the dismissive "out of tune" knee jerk without even giving them a chance :(

@@Fire_Axus i don't think music is something that HAS to be rational. Musical theory suggests how to write, but doesn't restrain. In my opinion, when you compose, as long as someone likes it, and especially yourself, it's great!

This one to me sounds a lot like a microtonal version of Kapustin's pieces. The chaotic rhythmic dots in the bass and the quick jumps between really juicy jazzy chords as well as the falling octaves in the ending really remind me of his work.
