I feel for you, having grown up on a 1500 acre farm we didn't have the newest of equipment and we made do. It was a miracle day if something didn't break down. The one thing that I got out of my life on the farm was, things can always be worse, so be thankful when things are good.
You will get through this set back and be ready to take on the next challenge.

Bad enough to wrap belts around a bale or actually roll one up in a bale and have to dig it out or have one wrap around the rollers...it shows how much power is going to the baler...another headache is when a belt lacing pin breaks and has grooves wore in it and you fight it trying to get the broken pieces out...thats the untold stories of baling hay...lol

That view of Lawrence trying to pay Bobby and him refusing to take it was not unusual at all. That is WHAT FARMERS DO and who knows maybe HE will need a little help one day. I am sure all he would have to do is ask. That sorghum has woody stems and is rough on belts. Hope he can splice them. I have run belts with two and three splices in them. Fun part is getting them all the same length. I am guessing he has a splicing machine? If you run balers it is a wise investment. Let us know how they turn out........

"Well Wesley's back again" - but did he bring snacks, inquiring minds need to know!!
My dad's first dog was a border collie, and once it was old enough, he took it to the local playing fields, let it off its leash to have a run. Nearby was a flock of seagulls pecking at the ground, the dog ran all the way around without disturbing them, then did the crouched approach trying to round them up. She was upset when they "cheated" and flew off. But that whole rounding instinct was there from the get-go.

When you get some spare time you should watch some video's on how farmers did things before all this modern equipment. Even you saying how you have AC in the tractor well not that long ago just having a bit of cover on the head of the driver was a big deal. Still before that imagine being one of the people men women and children that were out in the hay fields racking it all by hand and then making it into stacks. Now that was mega hard hot dirty work . Wow they must have been so itchy and hot .

General rule around here is if the a.c. isn't working, especially on Deere's with soundguard cabs the tractor is broke down. 🥵

    • @bluegrallis
      @bluegrallis 4 роки тому +2

I was mowing set aside ground for a guy once with his 4240. He had been having trouble with the AC and told me there was an extra fuse in the cab.
I ended up 15 miles from home base trying to finish the last field when the second fuse blew. I'm here to tell you, when it's 90* and 60+ % humidity, that John Deere cab is no place to be in mid August. I finished the job with the windows and doors open, but I may have been a bit delirious by the time I got on the road headed home.
We ended up sliding the coil out from in front of the radiator and hose it down good to get all the dust out of the fins, and it worked OK after that.

Only offering my opinion here, use MATO laces on those belts but make sure the pins are changed every year no matter how much or little hay you bale. Owned (bought new) a Deere 466 that when I sold it had over 17,000 bales on it and only ever had to fix one belt. Deere recommends only one splice (ie three laces) in a belt and that each splice should be no less than 36 inches. Also, when adding brand new belts, it's very important to re-size the old ones. They do stretch over time. Might check Shoup manufacturing for belts, they are cheaper than Deere. Last thing, hats off to Bobby.. this is what farmers do!

I like ya'lls videos! Thanks for the entertainment. I was wondering why you don't irrigate the fields out of the river? Seems like an easy source to solve the water(rain) problems. Let that old river pay you back for the flooding in the spring.

Well at least you have a good day for bailing. It has rained every evening down here in Lexington. Probably a good thing cause my haybine is broke. Hope you get it all done.

Really enjoy your videos, thank you so much. To stop all these breakdowns you need to move to preventative maintenance to stop the reactive maintenance. Pick some weeks in the calendar when Lawrence can replace the parts he knows will break so you're not repairing in the field. Meredith you need to convince Lawrence to do this. Eventually you will find an annual schedule with much fewer breakdowns :) good luck :)

In Arizona it is illegal to feed the cows a round bail of hay. They don't get a square meal. LOL. Love you all and love watching your videos. Your days are like my typical days.

Hey y'all from Tn....Wes will be rolling hay before ya know it , chopping corn too..lol. Breakdowns suck but a backup piece of equipment can definitely save the day. We help our neighbors and they help us in a time of need and I'm sure it's hard for some folks to understand but in the end...we're all in this together. ...be safe out there and keep on keeping on

Eat more venison, save the beans. AC in a tractor is wonderful. No radio, you cannot hear your equipment if something starts telling you it is fixing to break. Your families attitude is good every hardship can be overcome. Thanks for sharing your life.

Rethreading belts ain't no fun. Hate that happened to yall. Best tool I ever bought was a belt lacer. I could just buy the belt in bulk and cut em and lace em myself. I don't bale round bales anymore, just the idiot blocks. Much love yall.

Meredith, why don’t you turn the bad belts into something artsy like a sign or something. Andrew camarata sells skid steer tracks in 1 foot sections with his autograph. Just a ideal, take that lemon and make lemonade. That 4440 is on the horizon.

Hello; I recently found you vlog and I must say it's been a true pleasure sharing the day with you all. The world needs more people like you guys it would be a much better place. Thank you Mike. P.s. the lie dodge pick up Lawrence had stated it seem to want to start when he lets go of the key from the crank position. I had a dodge just like her and it was the ballast resisting on fire wall. It's a 4 spade ceramic and runs the spark in start position maybe he could check it ? Best of luck to your family and I'll prey the water goes down for you all. Mike

Over the years I have learned the problems with belts is the splice pin breaks causing splices to rip the belt. New holland recommends changing pins every 500 bales. I think changing the pins every year you won’t have the problems. Pins are cheaper than belts

Lawrence and Meredith , your farm has been good for your children , they seem very happy and playful but will participate on getting the work done . I just wanted to tell you that you did a great job of raising them . Lawrence in regards to Wesley making that shot on that coyote I believe you . That rifle caliber with that grain bullet is very capable but you have to be a good shot , very steady and very confident which it sounds like Wesley is . He has young eyes with a steady hand . Nice job young man !

Unfortunately, I'm very experienced at putting belts in JD balers and putting new splices in. I had a 535 baler with net wrap that was very unreliable at net wrapping. I would mess up the belts after I had to unroll the bales and would have to rebale them and that was hard on the belts. I still have some spare belts in the shed and splices that would work on your baler, but I'm not close enough to be of help. Sorry, Bobby is my type of guy. Just glad to help his neighbor and friend. I have different baler brand now and it has it's quirks too, but I was able to bale 460 bales in two days the first cutting this year and net wrap all of them and had to unroll one bale because of a mistake I made. That never would have happened with that other baler and my neighbor had to come rescue me a few times with the other baler and I think once last year with the new baler. Can't remember why now.

Hey Miss Merdie. Missed this video and it's one of your best.
Can you answer a question about the breeding herd?
When heiffers like Twister and Panda joining the mature mammas, do they re-establish their links to their own mothers?

Howdy,as usual another awesome video, watching y'all on the farm working together has brought back memories for me, I was watching when Mr Lawrence was conversing with the other farmer and that's when the memories came flooding into my mind, most of my life has been with or around farming for the most part, when my mama passed away at the end of 2018 I moved away from our hometown to another state, and just watching y'all on the farm working, even hay season or whatever the case may be it just brings wonderful memories back for me,had a few tears fall remembering back to the simpler times, keep doing what y'all are doing as it really is a healing time for me to be able to watch y'all farming and remembering life as it once were for me,may the Lord continue to bless you and your family
