@Kris Paterson That's the thing about zooms. They give you this flexibility without need to change the lenses all the time. Primes are great, don't get me wrong, you can't get the same dof with any zoom but zooms are often just easier. I take only my 24-105 with me when traveling. Good all rounder.
Can not use zoom lenses for general photography; use them only for theater and concerts in the 75-150mm (FF) range. For general photography, my favorite focal lenght is 40mm (FF).
I use this for travel, last trip I also took a prime and never used it. For future trips this will be my go to travel lense. "A nice tip is reconfigure the focus hold button to toggle aps-c mode for that extra reach ".
Amazing Review, very encouraging and inspiring. Also Beautiful photos that you showed with this lens. Thank you. I just bought the lens yesterday, and YES, I love it.
I recently just purchased this after the new year to replace my Sony Ziess, 24 - 70 f/ 4.0 which was pretty soft around the edges and just did not work so good with auto eye focus. So far this lens is sharp at every full length. I already love it.😁
Great Video! When I use the A6500 I favorite the 18-105, but now I'd change to A7RIII and need a new "allday-lens". After your Video my favorite is the 24-105. Now I'm waiting for a new cashback action by Sony, then I will order. Greetings from Lake of Konstanz, Werner
Bought it. It's unbelievable sharp. The build quality it's incredibile. Probably one of the best sony lenses. I switched from 24 70 GM, and this think it's equally sharp, similar build quality (a bit more plastic), less heavy and has the image stabilizer. Thanks to the oss you can go down with the iso. The unique case where the gm is better is for sport, when u need really fast shutter speed, but in some cases even 2.8 it's not enough!
Hi Pav, I really like your video. I want to upgrade from my Sony 28-70 kit zoom for photos and the Sony 24-105 seems to be the answer to the only lens I need especially since you said it also has a good Macro capability 1-3 and also the only lens you use for video. Your complete raving on the quality of it just re-enforces what I heard from other videos about this lens.
So far it's my favorite also. I notice it's not quite as sharp as prime but the versatility is amazing. Most of the time f4 is all you need. In low light I switch to primes.
I’m a food photographer and also like to dabble in street and video. Have been considering this lease for ages (I’m very indecisive) and I’ve just now bought this lens after watching you video. Thank you!!!
I have a Sony APS-C and use the 16-70 90% of the time. 16-70 is like 24-105 on full frame (but f/4 is not the same on APS-C and FF). Next year I plan to upgrade to full frame and will defenitely buy the 24-105 too.
Good choice! With all the lens reviews that I have been doing recently it wasn't on my a7III at all for the last few months but I just started using it again and I am amazed (again) how good it is.
I have this lens and love it. Can I ask what gimbal you're using it on? I'm using zhiyun crane v2 but it only balances at about 24-70 I can't get it to balance beyond that
I think it is very good. I film with a7sII and I can go to 40000 ISO without any problems what so ever. I literally can't find issue with it. Very versatile and very sharp.
Very interesting perspective. I have heard people say that the Sony 24-105 does a lot of things good but nothing great. I think I understand what they mean . . . sure, there is no way to compare this lens to a 135mm f1.8 / 400mm F2.8 /24mm f1.4 etc etc. etc. . . obviously. But this modern lens paired with a Sony a7iii yields excellent results all things considered. I would say that this lens does MANY things excellently, and nothing, 'amazingly'. . . . but those 'amazing' lenses only do 1 or 2 things 'amazingly' and cost well over twice as much. The 'amazing' part of this lens is it's versatility as you have demonstrated very well. Good job on a different perspective on this lens. Thank you.
Thank you Eric for writing such a good comment and thank you so much for watching. I totally agree with you. It's is not THE BEST lens of all lenses but it certainly is very versatile and very handy in so many different situations.
With the camera body stabilization on and the lens stabilization together would you still need a gimble for smooth run and gun videography? Or would the two stablizations of camera and lens on be enough?
Although internal and lens' stabilisation are very good at taking out micro jitters from hand held video shots they will not replace smoothness of gimbal shots - especially when walking
I have been watching your videos for less than a year, but you have replaced some other photogs in my feed since then. I am considering a 24-105 f4 for my A7riii & A7sii or the SL2S. I am trying to replace the Sii with the Leica for studio video. I’ll keep the Sii for gimbal location video, for which I have been using an A6300. At least that’s the plan. I have all the focal lengths covered out to 600mm. Except I use a Sony video lens in studio, but I have a hole between 85mm and 150mm for outdoors and event. Being able to work well on or off gimbal and with video and stills. I’ve commented about how great your content i. So when I started narrowing down to the 24-105 f4, your reviews matter. I bought a Tokina 85mm 1.8 on your recommendation and it is my favorite lens. After watching this video I think this lens would be perfect for what I do. You should know I have the Sony 24-70mm 2.8 which I have used the heck out of, but I often feel the 70mm is not enough reach. Which is why I bought the Tokina. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Hope that made sense. By the way, you have come a long way since you made this 3 years ago. Best Regards, Tim

I have the Minolta AF 24-105mm f3.5-4.5 and wonder if the lens design is similar and how they might compare to each other. Would you be interested in doing a comparison, Pav?
@@PavSZ I read this morning on the Amazon product page for this lens, the Minolta that is, that it was the first in this focal length range. And Sony bought Minolta's designs and facilities, and I'm sure retained many of their designers and technicians, when it established it's photographic business. I use it on the Sony a850 a-mount camera which I hope will last the rest of my lifetime, but I've also ordered an a-mount to e-mount adapter which will make it useful on my a7 but without AF just in case.

I travel a little of course, so my choice would be the fixed ones, do you think I'm wrong? ...thanks

Much sharper and better colors. My only complaint is that it is much heavier.
Solid video. Thanks for the info and sample shots. I am currently thinking of selling three of my lenses to purchase this one and was wondering if you think it's worth it. The reason I want to sell is that I don't want to keep changing lenses any more. I own a 28mm f2, a 35 1.4 Zeiss and the fabulous 90mm macro lens. I want to sell these three and get the 24 to 105... worth it?
oooh I don't know. It depends what you are shooting. I don't think this lens will give you the look any of your 3 lenses do. Have a look at my review of the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens. I'm also working on a comparison video (this Sony vs Sigma) - it's coming out a week after next
@@PavSZ it's mostly events and in studio product photography. What makes you say I won't get the same look as the lenses I currently own? It will look different at those same focal lengths on the zoom lens?
E.g. you are shooting in dark conditions - with 35 1.4 you'd have 8 times more light than with 24-104F4, which translates into ISO 2000 vs ISO 16000 ... If ISO is important for you, you may consider buying Tamron 28-75 instead (which is cheaper and optically excellent) and keeping 35F1.4 for dark shots.

I have this lens on order, and it will be the lens I will use more than any other. I already have a TTArtisan 11mm. THE ONLY BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS Sony LENS FOR ME is that I love macro photography and, according to all info I read, this lens SUCKS when it comes to macro. I probably shoot macro 40% of the time. I just cannot afford to spend all the THOUSANDS on lenses. I bought a few extension tubes and will try them but will lose so much that way. Too bad for me, cry, cry, cry! I should have got the a6400 because you have to be a millionaire to afford lenses for the a7iii.
it's not a macro lens but as I have shown in my video, pretty ok for close-up photography. Try getting some of those screw on macro filters - they reduce minimal focusing distance. I'd search for old Sigma ones on ebay (they don't make them any more) as those are really high quality glass unlike the really cheap ones now. Whatever you do, you will need more light or a tripod to get sharper results

unlucky, very unlucky. I had mine for over 2 years. Had it drenched in salt ocean water, dropped and abused in any possible way from the day I bought it ... still works as it should. Never had any problems with it.
Versatile Yes , but simply no where near sharp as a prime
my 85mm 1.8 though restrictive in many places, pics are ultra sharp
each to their own, nice review
Just use an iPhone 12 why such big gear for food
good luck!
Versatile...that depends on your needs. For me it would be useless for what I do. I hate titles like on this video.. thus thumbsdown. Tame it down in the future.
Is It ok if I use this lens with a Nisi ND64 6 stop + CPL filter?
I can't see why not
