To all the people who can only think about Gears Of War when they hear this: This song is about Marks visits to the hospital in which his ex-girlfriend and life long friend Katy was dying from cancer after giving birth to a child shortly before being diagnosed. Katy is pretty much the only person mentioned consistently across Marks discography since the early 90s. This album is dedicated to her, though her death is also documented on the earlier release Ghosts Of The Great Highway in tracks such as Carry Me, Ohio and Duk Koo Kim.
Cheesy Cola Gears of War brought me here and took me away with the beatific iconography. I love this song and not just what it represents but what it made me feel as a young boy first hearing this. I love this song.
Whenever I hear it, I think about my late mother. About what She tried to teach me. About what I didn' t listen to when I still had her. About what I should have done, what I should have said. About the Guilt I have a amassed towards her. About the debt I can never repay. About the pain. It's beautiful. Painful. I am thankful.
I am a huge music appreciater. I had never heard this song until Gears of War 3 used it in a commercial and then I fell in love with it and needed to hear this song again as well as more of this guy's music. Is that really a bad thing? As I said, amazing song. Truly a work of art and a labor of talent.
Don't cry my love don't cry no more A crashing sky a rolling screen A city drowning Gods black tears I cannot bear to see She lay under the midnight moon Her restless body stiring Until the magic morning hour Like poison it succumbs her Her baby skin her old black dress Her hair it twists round her necklace Constricts and chokes like ruthless vines To sleep she overtakes her? Her room is painted Heron Blue Lit by candlelight and chandelier And from her headboard perched so high A million dreams have passed her Don't cry my love don't cry no more It overwhelms my breaking heart A minor swell of violins I cannot bear to hear them A mother shepherds her young birds she fills their mouths and warms their souls Til they are strong and good to fly Away from her alone she'll die Cradle on quiet old oak limbs As heaven blue her light fails A breath of soot into her lungs A life, a journeys end in one Don't sing that old sad hymn no more It resonates inside my soul It haunts me in my waking dream I cannot bear to hear it Don't play those violins no more Their melancholic overtones They echo off the floor and walls I cannot bear to hear them

She is dying. She is someone he loves. So he is in pain. Powerless, he just sits. He is going to watch her die. It kills him. He is going to take it all as she leaves. Every piece of the moment. All the way to the paint on the walls.
I always come back to this song, of course for the GOW inspo but the trailer itself sparks an interest that all players find themselves engulfed in. I would fall asleep to this song only to wake up to the booming bass, it was like I woke up from some horror I had buried deep inside....only to confront in a mental battle throughout the night. Only when the sun would rise that I'd find an artificial peace only to realize the battle would find its kindling in my heart as my mind would drift. Inspiration that is video games in a microcosm.

Once a year I come back to this song, this song has been eerily present in my life. It's such a small world
Don't cry my love don't cry no more
A crashing sky a rolling screen
A city drowning Gods black tears
I cannot bear to see
She lay under the midnight moon
Her restless body stiring
Until the magic morning hour
Like poison it succumbs her
Her baby skin her old black dress
Her hair it twists round her necklace
Constricts and chokes like ruthless vines
To sleep she overtakes her?
Her room is painted Heron Blue
Lit by candlelight and chandelier
And from her headboard perched so high
A million dreams have passed her
Don't cry my love don't cry no more
It overwhelms my breaking heart
A minor swell of violins
I cannot bear to hear them
A mother shepherds her young birds
she fills their mouths and warms their souls
Til they are strong and good to fly
Away from her alone she'll die
Cradle on quiet old oak limbs
As heaven blue her light fails
A breath of soot into her lungs
A life, a journeys end in one
Don't sing that old sad hymn no more
It resonates inside my soul
It haunts me in my waking dream
I cannot bear to hear it
Don't play those violins no more
Their melancholic overtones
They echo off the floor and walls
I cannot bear to hear them
The low but strong bass drum that comes in at 3:18 along with “her room is painted heron blue” just absolutely breathtaking
full body chills every time. might genuinely be my favorite part of the song

foxstar612 I'm actually a little offended you compared GOW to starship troopers.
T Vaughn Why? As I can see they're both a social commentary, as Starship Troopers is about a force that can rival ours through a "missile" like weapon, while GOW is a commentary about our dependence on oil and that while we fight enemies for it we can create monsters that we have to face later. As far as I can see one is just a chainsaw bayonet adventure that we get to propel; the other is propelled by the characters that we follow. And just saying that GOW is chainsaw masturbation, well it is, but it's a chainsaw masturbation with a concept worth sharing. After viewing the movie, 'Fury' I think GOW has more in common with it than Starship Troopers, and I meant no offense to a piece of cinema history, but GOW will also be a piece of video game history, it will be remembered more than Call of Duty as a narrative, a narrative that the person playing is the star of, that's what makes games have a replayability.

Gears of War on the other hand I felt was extremely underrated as an epic story simply because of the platform it was made for.
foxstar612 I think the fact that you refer to starship troopers as a piece of cinema history almost writes off anything else you have to say. Joel Miller: “Baby… everyone’s alone at some point. Listen to yourself.”
Ellie: “Joel, that doesn’t make any s-“
Joel: “SHH, Shh. Listen, baby girl.”
Quiet.
Fireflies and crickets.
Ellie looks at the moon.
Crackling.
Ellie feels the fire.
Joel: “Do you get it now?”
Ellie: “No…?”
Joel: “Nah… wup. You’ll understand.”
Ellie: “Yeah. After everything you, and /everyone/ lied about, I’m-“
Joel: “Okay- Do you want some military style steak n’ shake or not?”
Ellie sighs, through her nose.
Ellie: “Shoot some fish in a barrel for me, yeah?”
Ellie snatches her pack, still wet and soft. It smells sweet and meaty, yet it stinks, just a little. Like honey drizzled over a horse’s dead body in the morning. Water and fire. Water and air. It didn’t grow a cordyceps or a gun or a bomb or a man or a trigger;
It grew a comfort. A father, a mother, a friend, a light.
It grew a grilled salmon and disgusting black coffee. Smelled like blackened cockroach 8ss in the morning. Joel made it work with nothing short of a creamer when saved ‘til noon.
Joel: (laughs) “Will do.”
Ellie never understood why women ever listened to anybody. She always figured they were “just trying their best to survive.”
Like her mom used to say… probably used to say. Ellie never met her mom but she met a father. He was one hell of a good liar. An unconditionally red herring, bright like a firefly, glowing like the dark side of the moon.
i kno this was used for the gears 3 trailer..but for some reason whenever i hear this i think about the video game "the last of us" this song jus fits so well with the environment of that game

Ya casi es 2019 y sigo escuchandola :3
I think I'm the only one here who isn't here from Gears of War. 😂 but this is really weird, when I first it actually reminded me of something that would be on a game trailer, and GOW was the first thing that came to mind.

Working in healthcare during the covid 19 pandemic 😔. So much death
This could be a good walking dead theme song
Sounds like it could be Viggo Mortensen singing.
I memories when playing Gears :')
Good times 🕶🙌
It's like I listen to Aragorn singing💜
give me more heron blue
she said on to you
she said she smiled
you walked away for a mile
a mile a mile seems far now
but the moon beams reached you soon
so soon so soon you remember
you remeber her teeth her womb
you try to carass her soul you try to escape to soon
birds are gawking at your naked soul only on the way to go
to go to go so far to float away from trouble and despair
to see to be to tremble in everlasting ecstasy
you forget about her you do as you can as it should be
as foretold it was
your grandma probably knew, she knew it all
now the burden is on you
enough was said
flown you have
