If not, a possible workaround is to control them with the Amazon Alexa app? 2) If I have various E27/GU10 bulbs around the house, can they all be controlled with the same Tradfri remote? Or should I just start with the Tradfri bridge? With Black Friday coming up soon I'm expecting the Hue, and possibly Tradfri, to be on sale so it's probably a good time to buy then and the price gap between the two may be less noticeable. 4) For a standalone bedside lamp do you use smart bulbs, or just keep a regular bulb but use a smart plug? With a smart bulb you'd need to leave the switch on, I'm not sure if this would still drain some electricity even when the bulb is off. thank you!

Great review. I’m also fed up of the price of Philips Hue although they are dam reliable. The only thing that stops be buying these is the support. Are ikea going to be committed to supporting these and continuing to update firmware. Secondly they don’t make a bayonet fitting which is what we use in the UK tad annoying.
Mark Smith I guess not, I just started with the Philips as it was the most well known and reliable. Now I know about tradfri, I may have started with this due to cost... but it’s a personal choice really.
Mick Stains - thanks for the video! Question for ya… I’m having trouble finding fire-rated, GU10 recesses-lighting fixtures in the UK that will fit a tall bulb like IKEA’s. Do you happen to know what brand & model number the recessed fixtures are that you used? Also, do you know how tall the IKEA bulbs are exactly (from top of leads to flange)? Thanks for any help!
But in order to update the firmware on the bulbs you need to buy the Ikea HUB and that is not cheap plus is it available in the US without having to pay an import tax or conversion fee?
Quick question please? I have Philips Hue Bridge, can I simply add the Tradfri bulb by turning off and on 6 times and pairing? I dont need any other ikea kit, e.g. Bridge? Unless I of course the firmware is old and needs updating, which hopefully now they should all be to up to date out of the box.
Hi, new to smart lighting and need some advice. I want to control 20 gu10 spotlights, keeping the cost down and achieving : - dimming and white temperature control (3 types of white) - zone/scene control (group the bulbs in 3 different groups) - control via internet (not a must) Could someone please point out which bulbs (IKEA tridfri?) I should be looking for and what's the best way to control everything? (Philips hue hub vs other options eg smartthings)?
Hello Ale, its all down to personal preference really and budget. I personally like Philips Hue, albeit a little pricey. which is why I tried the Ikea Tradfri range for the cheaper bulbs, but linked it to my existing Hue system. I have place a couple of links in the description for you to look at...
If i connect them to my Philips Hue bridge, can i control them with my Google Home? The Ikea website states that it can not yet be done but i'm suspecting they mean through their hub and app. Can anyone help?
ignore that - whilst it appear to do anything - it does seem to add the remote to the hue network! on/off and dimming works but colour change does not seem to
It all depends on the Firmware of your Tradfri bulb. If it was bought recently, you should be ok and the bulb will pair no problem. If its an older bulb, you may need to update the firmware, which would require the Tradfri hub... hope that helps...
I'm trying to connect mu tradfri remote to my hue bridge, but it doesnt'work. I cannot understand if the tradfri remote is effectively conneted to my hub, and i can say that it's not, infact when i go near the bulb with the tradfri remote and press the connection button, the bulb begins to blink but then it was connected only with the ikea dimmer..infact it doesn't work with the hue apps... any advice for me?! The problem is that I cannot understand when the remote control connects to the hub because the red light of the remote control stops flashing but obviously the hub and the remote control are not connected to each other.
Hi Mick, thanks for making this very useful video for us in UK Smart Home community! Very straightforward and has everything I needed to start switching over to the much cheaper Ikea system!

@@Killerteam08 hi, would you be able to advice me if I would still need the ikea remote switch to pair it with the Philips hue bridge/hub? I have a Philips hue bridge with 2 white bulbs and wanted to get a few more bulbs from the IKEA tradfri range without having to purchase the IKEA gateway hub.
@@PrashantVara Hi mate, IKEA now stocks an updated firmware bulbs, so no additional hardware needed. I have some ambience ones and they're much brighter than Philips. Excellent value for money.
I am trying to understand the cost saving. On ikea website its like £15 for a bulb without the kit, and with the Hue its £15 for a white hue extension bulb (no colour). So this IKEA idea, although neat, would cost more money, because you would have to buy the IKEA Tradfri starter kit for £50
Andrew Wiles in the long run it will probably be cheaper, if you looking to upgrade you system a lot it will be cheaper to buy the starter kit once and then just buy the bulb
I also found that touchlink wasn't required. I recently bought 5x GU10 tradfri bulbs and they all just paired straight away. I have also paired a couple of Ikea dimmer switches to my hue bridge. Although they don't show in the app but you then touchlink them to the bulbs you want to control (up to 10 per dimmer). Some other cheap simple white bulbs are old Philips LivingWhites. The round remote also works with hue as I have one in my living room. Again this doesn't show in the app but you touchlink it to the bulbs you want.
Philip Embleton have you compared Ikea GU10’s to the Phillips equivalent? Would you recommend swapping the Phillips GU10’s for the Ikea version? If so, do you have a link to the GU10’s you’ve purchased from Ikea?
Hi. No I didn't have any Hue GU10 bulbs. I just wanted some simple dimmable GU10s for my kitchen spot lights and these were much cheaper than Hue. Probably not worth switching from the Hue bulbs for and more of a much cheaper alternative to. It was the new £7 400lm bulbs I bought. www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/lighting/smart-lighting/tr%C3%A5dfri-led-bulb-gu10-400-lumen-wireless-dimmable-warm-white-art-80365270/
Mads Hannil Hedensted I haven’t tried that, but I do control tradfri bulbs with a Philips Hue motion sensor, so would assume it may work both ways... I think it’s just a case of adding the required bulb and remote to a group of your choice...
I'm struggling with this a the moment. My IKEA bulp is connected to the Hue Bridge, and I can control it via my Apple Homekit, and I can use the IKEA Remote to control my IKEA bulb as well. But even though it seems that I've connected the IKEA remote via the Hue Lights App, I don't know how use it to control my Hue bulps. I don't see the Remote as Accessory or so....?
Morten Seier I’m not sure you can control your Philips Hue bulbs with the Ikea remotes. It will work the other way round I.e your Hue remotes will operate your Ikea bulbs...
or just buy an echo dot - you can then control a variety of bulbs via the alexa app or using voice with the echo dot -- no need to update firmware, or sync with philips hue, and you have a lot more choice.
Paul D thanks for the comment. I have my Tradfri lights in the bathroom, so wouldn’t really benefit from Alexa. It’s all about the type of set up that’s personal to your needs....
Asim Ghafur I would assume the app is available for both IOS and Android. Hue Lights is the name of the app, not to be confused with the official Philips Hue app...
Nice tutorial, but touchlink isn't actually required. Simply reset the Tradfri bulb as normal, and add it via the Hue app. As it is scanning for new bulbs, simply turn the bulb off and back on and the Hue system will locate the bulb and add it.
Unfortunately, it seems that the IKEA remote controllers can no longer be used. They can neither a) be imported into the Philips Bridge, nor b) be bound to the Ikea lights (since binding them to the lights, causes the lights to become unbound from the Philips Bridge)..
This video shows you how to pair the Ikea remotes with the hue bridge, this is necessary to make sure the Ikea remote is using the same zigbee channel number as the hue bridge is using, this must be done before you pair the Ikea remote with the Ikea bulb, else... the Ikea remote will pair with the Ikea bulb and will change the Ikea bulb to the zigbee channel that the remote is using, which will most likely unpair the bulb from the hue bridge in the process
@@IanEddolls Unless I am being blind or stupid (or both!) the Touchlink option is no longer available in the iOS app. If it is, can you say where as I cant find it. thanks
Ian Hammond... touchlink has never been an available option in the official Philips Hue app, only standard search and serial number search are included in the Philips Hue app
2020 Update / Or buy the Ikea Smart System (which I don’t recommend, will explain why later) or go for Hue. I had the some Ikea lights for year, paired to Hue and working perfect. Since a year or so, the where problems so I figured out, the Ikea lights needed an firmware update so I bought the Ikea Hub and Ikea Sensor (you need the Hub AND a sensor otherwise you can’t pair lights to the Ikea system). I upgraded all bulbs and all but one GU10 Ikea wouldn’t pair to Hue anymore. That said, the Ikea smart system isn’t that smart. Each Ikea Smart light has to be paired to a Sensor or Switch. It can be paired directly to the Ikea Hub. So if you decide to bind all devices to Home Assistant, the Hue sensor will send motion triggers and temperature back to Home Assistant (or other Home Assistant like devices, best is Homey btw). The Ikea Sensor is binded to the light fixture and not the same way as the Hue Sensor, directly to the Hub. All in all the Philips Hue sensor has an affordable price and is al real smart sensor. I’m throwing out all Ikea smart things and gonna buy Hue or other ‘real’ smart devices. The Ikea bulbs will need a Firmware update in the future and I don’t want to unbind and bind every fixture to the Ikea Hub anymore in order to run the firmware updates. Any questions, feel free to send me a message 👍🏼
You won’t get the range on these bulbs as you would on the philips hue bulbs. You have to have the bulb right next to the bridge. I think you’re better off using a Samsung SmartThings hub with a hue bridge and an Amazon Alexa because you then make your system fully compatible with most systems and use the amazon Alexa as a main controller to bring all the brands of smart devices to work as a whole system together.jay
Had trouble with this as it seems Touchlink only enabled in IOS version of Hue app. That is, bulb not detected using Android version of Hue APK. However, by using Lamp Finder running on a PC, bulb immediately detected and visible in Hue APK. www.huetips.com/lamp-finder
Philip hue lights are brilliant but way over priced . You won’t see a saving on the white bulbs doing this because they cheap anyway but I bet you’ll save a fortune on the hue strips and hue colour bulbs. Jay
That’s a fair comment, but the cost of additional bulbs is cheaper from Ikea, hence my video explaining how to link them to your existing Hue system. Thank you for your comment...
After spending a few hours trying to get these bulbs and remote from IKEA paired to a hue system, I would 100% not recommend it. Got a bulb paired but so many inconsistencies. Remotes only pair with a bulb too, not the system, so it’s sends everything out of sync. Avoid.
Convenience of install, not being allowed due to renting, incapable due to lack of neutral, that's all at the top of my head right now. For some situations, a bulb is great, and for others (chandeliers, for instance), a smart switch is great. The good thing is that we have choice.
I know i'm late but 1-Led bulbs don't die like incandescents, the last years and years 2-Smart bulbs can be dimmed, you can change the temperature of the light or even the color, can't do any of that with a switch
You forgot to mention where you got the genious Idea for paring the remote from ;) (Yeah, that's right - me - posted several months ago in october :-p) :D Have a day :)
Regarding the bulbs - not the remote. I searched the net but found nothing. So please link to the article. Before that there even wasn't anyone which showed you how to pair the old LivingColors remote to Hue without having your bridge reset. It was well known that the bridge would accept touchlink commands from remotes but no one ever thought about doing it reverse - which is by far the best way since it doesn't reset your bridge and it's as easy as 1-2-3 to get just about as many 3rd party remotes on your system you want.

Hi thanks for the informative video does this than work with Apple Homekit
Ajay Assani did you get an answer to this question, I was wondering the same thing
IKEA bulbs on Philips Hub not working with HomeKit only with Hue App
Mick, is there any benefit of starting with the Hue system if you don't already own any smart bulbs? Cheers
Mark Smith I guess not, I just started with the Philips as it was the most well known and reliable. Now I know about tradfri, I may have started with this due to cost... but it’s a personal choice really.
good vid mate, does Philips Hue work with Siri via HomeKit ?
Jack Rippers Yes I use my Philips Hue bulbs with Alexa, Siri and HomeKit...
Mick Staines tradfri bulbs paired with hue bridge are working at homekit too?
Mick Stains - thanks for the video! Question for ya… I’m having trouble finding fire-rated, GU10 recesses-lighting fixtures in the UK that will fit a tall bulb like IKEA’s. Do you happen to know what brand & model number the recessed fixtures are that you used? Also, do you know how tall the IKEA bulbs are exactly (from top of leads to flange)? Thanks for any help!
My GU10 light fittings are standadrd size, but I chose the shallower of the two Tradfri GU10 (theres two different sizes available)...
Correct. They pair directly with the Hue bridge. I have 5 Ikea bulbs and no Ikea hub.
Can u connect the trådfri socket to Philips hue Bridge?
Henrik Grönbäck this isn’t something I’ve tried. Hopefully someone will have the TRÅDFRI socket and may be able to answer that...
Hi, new to smart lighting and need some advice.
I want to control 20 gu10 spotlights, keeping the cost down and achieving :
- dimming and white temperature control (3 types of white)
- zone/scene control (group the bulbs in 3 different groups)
- control via internet (not a must)
Could someone please point out which bulbs (IKEA tridfri?) I should be looking for and what's the best way to control everything? (Philips hue hub vs other options eg smartthings)?
Hello Ale, its all down to personal preference really and budget. I personally like Philips Hue, albeit a little pricey. which is why I tried the Ikea Tradfri range for the cheaper bulbs, but linked it to my existing Hue system. I have place a couple of links in the description for you to look at...
Does this work with the White IKEA bulbs aswell, or just the Color ones?
As the the hive works with philps hue buld would this work on the hive?
IKEA is now selling TRÅDFRI Wireless control outlet? Can I connect the IKEA outlet also to Hue bridge?
Most likely not bc hue doesn't support smart outlets
If i connect them to my Philips Hue bridge, can i control them with my Google Home? The Ikea website states that it can not yet be done but i'm suspecting they mean through their hub and app. Can anyone help?
In what app is that ”force bulb to join bridge”-button? Touchlink-thing?
Pikkakikka The app is called IConnectHue...
@@mstaines Touchlink doesnt seem to work for the Tradfri remotes in that app...
ignore that - whilst it appear to do anything - it does seem to add the remote to the hue network! on/off and dimming works but colour change does not seem to
Is this also possible without a Trådfri Hub?
It all depends on the Firmware of your Tradfri bulb. If it was bought recently, you should be ok and the bulb will pair no problem. If its an older bulb, you may need to update the firmware, which would require the Tradfri hub... hope that helps...
@@mstaines Thank you very much.
I think about to buy one.
Yes, your answer is very helpful!
Same problem for me.. did you solved it?
Hi Mick, thanks for making this very useful video for us in UK Smart Home community! Very straightforward and has everything I needed to start switching over to the much cheaper Ikea system!
Do they work with HomeKit scenes & app?
To a certain degree yes, but a little limited...
According to IKEA Canada, it fully works with HomeKit now and even supports new iOS 12 Siri Shortcut function.
Then how come it does show up in my home kit app?
@@walleyeye they work with homekit if u have the Tradfri gateway hub thing which links directly. Here you got Tradfri connected the phillips hue which then goes to homekit ive read its not fully supported or works as well, as oppsed to if the Tradfri paired to the hue is controlled by the eco.
Hi. Forget cost. The reason why I don't use my Philips hue bulbs is that they cant be set to start on a cool white rather than a warm white. This infuriates me. Do these bulbs help or not? I imagine not but let me know if wrong. Cheers.
Don't they remember what you set them to last?
Jeppe Beier . Not if turned off at switch. Really frustrating and is the reason I don't use mine.
IKEA bulbs remember last set after using normal switch. Philips HUE not, they always start Cold White and 100%.
This has now been fixed!
Does it appear in Apple’s Homekit?
Ikea bulb connected to Ikea Hub YES. Ikea bulb connected to Philips Hue Hub NO.
Can you use a tradfri bulb with a philips hue dimmer?
Stephen Bates I don’t see why not, using the same setup procedure. I have TRÅDFRI bulbs working with a Philips Hue motion sensor...
@@mstaines Thanks, Mick! That's awesome!
This works for me but only with the clear 12w tradfri bulbs, the 12.5w bulbs do pair but I cannot get them to show up in the hue app
djheckler92 Did you update the TRÅDFRI bulbs to the latest firmware prior to pairing with your Philips Hue system ?
Does this work with the first Philips hue bridge/hub so v1?
Toddy™ I’m going to say no, as I don’t think the firmware would support it, unless someone who has that setup can tell us different...
@@mstaines Thanks bro
Would the new IKEA bulbs not come with the latest firmware - thus not needing the IKEA hub?
In time probably, but IKEA orders HUGE quantities and these doesn't sell that much, so there's probably a rather sizeable stock of very much not up-to-date bulbs out there. You might get lucky, or.. not...
Clive Sinclair I’ll test this out and comment here
aboycalledjonny Did you get it to work?
@@Killerteam08 hi, would you be able to advice me if I would still need the ikea remote switch to pair it with the Philips hue bridge/hub? I have a Philips hue bridge with 2 white bulbs and wanted to get a few more bulbs from the IKEA tradfri range without having to purchase the IKEA gateway hub.
@@PrashantVara Hi mate, IKEA now stocks an updated firmware bulbs, so no additional hardware needed. I have some ambience ones and they're much brighter than Philips. Excellent value for money.
where is the touchlink app?
What limitations are there with siri homekit?
I am trying to understand the cost saving. On ikea website its like £15 for a bulb without the kit, and with the Hue its £15 for a white hue extension bulb (no colour). So this IKEA idea, although neat, would cost more money, because you would have to buy the IKEA Tradfri starter kit for £50
Andrew Wiles Me too. You can get a Hue twin bulb pack (white) for £24.95, ES or bayonet fitting
£9. At IKEA
In Finland the Ikea bulb is over 40 % cheaper than Philips and is 25% brighter.
Andrew Wiles in the long run it will probably be cheaper, if you looking to upgrade you system a lot it will be cheaper to buy the starter kit once and then just buy the bulb
Mix and match. E14 bulbs are still £30 each on hue or £9 from IKEA.
Are there other Bulbs or other Light strips (xiaomi, ...) that work with Philips Hue?
Marcel Gabriel I have Xiaomi lightstrip, but can’t get it to work with Philips Hue...
What app did you use for the touchlink?
WackyRacer I've used both LampFinder on windows and Hue Essentials on Android. Both worked fine.
Philip Embleton you’re saying that the Ikea hub isn’t necessary? Now THAT changes the price point for sure ☺️
If I have to buy the Tradfri hub anyway, what's the point of linking with Hue hub?
NO NEED i think
Can you use the Ikea remote to control Philips bumps? Or a Philips remote to control the Ikea bumps?
@@mstaines Thank you very much Mick. What a shame. All though I'm still pretty excited about that it's possible the other way around.
or just buy an echo dot - you can then control a variety of bulbs via the alexa app or using voice with the echo dot -- no need to update firmware, or sync with philips hue, and you have a lot more choice.
Paul D thanks for the comment. I have my Tradfri lights in the bathroom, so wouldn’t really benefit from Alexa. It’s all about the type of set up that’s personal to your needs....
You still need to pair with a bridge though don’t you Paul D ? The bulb can’t be driven directly I thought
dot doesnt act as a bridge. You would need your bridge to connect with the dot - to control.
what app do i need on android? is it touchlink there too?
Asim Ghafur I would assume the app is available for both IOS and Android. Hue Lights is the name of the app, not to be confused with the official Philips Hue app...
@@mstaines It was only in the iOS app but I dint think it is in that anymore either
Does this work with any LED Ikea light strips
Nice tutorial, but touchlink isn't actually required. Simply reset the Tradfri bulb as normal, and add it via the Hue app. As it is scanning for new bulbs, simply turn the bulb off and back on and the Hue system will locate the bulb and add it.
Will it also show up om homekit ?
No
is this still hack working?
I want to know too
But the bulbs can't be updated..
Does it work the same on Android?
Marcel Gabriel I would of thought so, I can only comment on iOS use though...
Has anyone tried this with the HomeKit?
I would recommend using either the iConnectHue app or the Hue Lights app
Both of those apps have touchlink
Doesn’t appear in HomeKit app
Ikea bulb connected to Ikea Hub YES. Ikea bulb connected to Philips Hue Hub NO.
Had trouble with this as it seems Touchlink only enabled in IOS version of Hue app. That is, bulb not detected using Android version of Hue APK. However, by using Lamp Finder running on a PC, bulb immediately detected and visible in Hue APK.

The Ikea remote and sensors batteries die a lot faster... I had to buy Philips in the end.
Trådfri / TRÅDFRI (threadless, threadfree) spelled with ”aring” Upercase Å, lowercase å. (U+00E5)
Philip hue lights are brilliant but way over priced . You won’t see a saving on the white bulbs doing this because they cheap anyway but I bet you’ll save a fortune on the hue strips and hue colour bulbs. Jay
In Belgium the Philips Hue is far more expensive then Ikea
But a good way to spend ecocheques on
In america as well.
The kit you show cost 135£
I pay 125€ for my philips starter kit with 3 bulbs bridge abd remote
And philips better.
That’s a fair comment, but the cost of additional bulbs is cheaper from Ikea, hence my video explaining how to link them to your existing Hue system. Thank you for your comment...
@@mstaines ya maybe for uk citizens but i try to see them on ebay and with postage they are only 6 or 7 £ cheaper
So i prefer philips
After spending a few hours trying to get these bulbs and remote from IKEA paired to a hue system, I would 100% not recommend it. Got a bulb paired but so many inconsistencies. Remotes only pair with a bulb too, not the system, so it’s sends everything out of sync. Avoid.
Siri?
I can't understand why you'd spend ten times on a bulb every time it dies rather than pay once for a smart switch. Am I missing something?
Convenience of install, not being allowed due to renting, incapable due to lack of neutral, that's all at the top of my head right now. For some situations, a bulb is great, and for others (chandeliers, for instance), a smart switch is great. The good thing is that we have choice.
I know i'm late but
1-Led bulbs don't die like incandescents, the last years and years
2-Smart bulbs can be dimmed, you can change the temperature of the light or even the color, can't do any of that with a switch
want to use Ikea trådløs .. use it .. want to use phillips hue .. then use that .. no need to mix things .. dont be cheap ! buy phillips hue !
its not a matter of being cheap, its matter och being able to afford it at all

You forgot to mention where you got the genious Idea for paring the remote from ;) (Yeah, that's right - me - posted several months ago in october :-p) :D Have a day :)
Which you got from articles going back to September
Regarding the bulbs - not the remote. I searched the net but found nothing. So please link to the article. Before that there even wasn't anyone which showed you how to pair the old LivingColors remote to Hue without having your bridge reset. It was well known that the bridge would accept touchlink commands from remotes but no one ever thought about doing it reverse - which is by far the best way since it doesn't reset your bridge and it's as easy as 1-2-3 to get just about as many 3rd party remotes on your system you want.
Clearly 2 people can’t have the same idea
Open market mate...! It’s not like you patented the idea *lol*
Do you want a box of tissues to wipe your tears away
Only 400 lumen lol
My Hue bulbs are 600 and 800 lumens.
Andrew G these bulbs are only for side lamps used for mood lighting, so are plenty bright enough for what I need. Thank you for your comment...
Lmao. The hue bulbs are much cheaper compared to the IKEA ones. I wouldn’t trust ikea with their technology stuff.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!
Good. Idea and you make it look so easy but...
What a nightmare this has been to try to get working. Now I can’t even get the gateway to be recognized never mind trying to get bulbs into Apple HomeKit.
If they can’t make something that works they shouldn’t be selling it!!!
I feel like I got screwed over by ikea and am still waiting for them to get back to me.
sorry to hear it isnt working for you, but I think its a little unfair to say DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT, as it works for a lot of people who have a similar setup, including myself. If there is anything I can assist you with, please ask and I will do my best to help you...
Philips Hue is better. You get what you pay for.
horrible... just more radiation around you...
everything has radiation
No products in your house come near the amount of background radiation you get from the earth everyday
What would be the point of a bulb without radiation? All light is radiation.
Just keep wearing your tinfoil hat - you’ll be fine!
MsLuvan all lights are radiation red light even have less tha normal warm white
