    So one thing that I want to clarify is that the Sophie and Toffee premade molds that I show in the video are technically squish molds, AND open face molds. I didn't want to confuse newbies to the hobby by saying "This is what an open face mold looks like!... Also it's a squish mold."
    I plan to go over mold types, as well as give the S&T molds a proper review in the near future. :)

  • @vandermore

    You are 100% right to use a respirator. It's not always easy to know if the filters you have on it are rated for fumes though. The pink one in the video is for particulates and not harmful vapors like those from resins.
    3M has a wealth of information on which filters should be used with which hazards.
    I use the pink (2097) in my woodworking, but switch to an activated carbon filter when I do any resin work or aerosol spraying.
    Great videos, thanks for making them and keep it up!

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator  5 років тому +3

      The information I found online and on the filter packaging seemed to indicate that it was for harmful vapors :o I'll look into it. Do you perhaps know of 3m filters that work for vapors that I can link instead from your experience? Perhaps I am misunderstanding the fumes that it mentions that they keep out

    • @vandermore
      @vandermore 5 років тому +2

      @@Rybonator Did some digging for the info:
      Data sheet for the 2097 (particulate and nuisance vapors) multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/5188O/3m-particulate-filter-2097-p100.pdf
      Here's 3M's page for choosing a filter. It looks like a combination filter ( like ChoriQueso suggests ) is what you want. The black label filters: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/safety-centers-of-expertise-us/respiratory-protection/respirator-selection/
      This is a good video that goes over the different types of filters: ua-cam.com/video/0RMJ4T5BDHY/v-deo.html
      I know from woodworking, a respirator makes a huge difference in my lungs. Using things with solvents or organic vapors is a whole other class of dangers over particulates. The occasional casting is probably fine, frequent casting of things I'd definitely use more than a particulate filter.
      This turned out longer than I expected. Love the videos, and you've made me interested in casting my own dice. Thanks!

    One thing in regards to mold making was something you mentioned in the past, it was making molds using the pressure pot to remove air pockets to get a smooth mold rather then a vacuum chamber. The process seems pretty self explanatory but seeing someone more experienced walk through it would be awesome as possibly removing the "need" for a vacuum chamber removes a cost barrier to entry for the hobby

In the vids I could find, it looked like bubbles on the side the lid went on was a common issue, but because they were channels that focused on how pretty or "kawaii" their finished pieces were they hid that fact by not showing that side. Since I couldn't be sure, I decided spending that kind of money was not worth the risk.

    Excellent video!
    Just a word about respirators and filters: the 3M 2097 Particulate filters shown here do not offer true vapor or VOC protection, just some nuisance odor filtering. They are great for sanding dust, and are probably fine for use with low/no VOC materials, like the Art n Glow resin shown... but many epoxies and resins release some NASTY vapors while curing. For those materials, a true vapor filter (like the 3M 6001, 6006, etc) should be used, ESPECIALLY if you're casting in a not-so-well ventilated area.
    Happy casting!

Back at the hotel, he couldn’t help but wonder if it was candy, so he popped it in his mouth. It had the consistency of candy, but was so tasteless that he genuinely couldn’t tell and spat it out. He spent the next two years trying to solve that mystery and eventually got a conclusive answer that it was in fact candy.

    There's the Smooth-On 14NV which doesn't require a pressure pot (and I used for a long time when I didn't have a pressure pot or vacuum chamber). I would recommend this to people just beginning, with the understanding that if you cast clear dice then you will have bubbles. As well, the chance you will have voids increases significantly if using the sprue molds. One way to help eliminate that is by using a slower curing resin and finding a way to vibrate the mold after its been filled.

    • @Rybonator
      @Rybonator  5 років тому

      None of these actually require a pressure pot. But if you want to use them for pressure casted dice with no bubbles, it's nice :) Yes you can totally vibrate the mold if you have something that vibrates for an extended period

    Great video, very helpful.
    There are 3 other ways to make molds and it's cheep.
    1 Hot glue gun can make UV resin molds, but if I heard right the mold can only make a few before needing to be replaced.
    2 Cornstarch and 100% Silicone Tube.(those that need a squeeze gun)
    3 100% Silicone Tube and VM&P Naphtha (This is to make a more detailed mold.)
    I hope this was helpful or at lease given a try.

      Thanks for the tips! I've heard of the first 2 but not the third. I wanna look into that :)

      @@Rybonator New tricks never hurt, when improving your craft.
      There is one more thing you can try but this is more of an upgrade then making a mold. This is from the UA-cam channel TheCraftsMan SteadyCraftin.
      1 1v1 of your silicone mix and Klean Strip Odorless Mineral Spirits, once you make the mold let it set for a wail. The mold will begin to shrink.
      2 finish making a mold, place it into a large container and pour the strip till it above the mold. This will make the mold bigger.
      3 same as #2 but you used NoVocs.
      I do think you might like his channel but he does talk slow but he does have great tips.

    That 2097 is a dust filter only rated for particulates like sawdust. It will protect you during the sanding process, but not while mixing, pouring, and curing..
    You need a filter rated for fumes such as the 6001 for the resin vapors.

    Hey there! Popping in real fast to say: Because you've inadvertently made me remember that I love how pretty dice are (the lovely, smooth planes, the wondrous angles, aND ALL THE GODDAMN COLORS AND CONCEPTS, THE POTENTIALLLL), I have been looking for premade dice molds b.c...I'm lazy! *cough* anyways I found premade ones that you can get shipped from china (arrived a few days shy of a month after ordering) for cheap. There are 17 (which some are more meh for, b.c they're extra math related) total, and it set me back 15 bucks. They ARE open faced squish molds, but do have vents so uh yeah, dope.

    Any chance we could get an updated video for this? You've moved up in the world to Cap molds since then and I'd really like an update for the silicone you and some others use. I'm building up supplies to start making and selling my own dice among other things. I've been using Magicfly silicone lately, but I can't get that in a large size, so I'm looking around for more options. I've not had a chance to use any of the Smooth-On silicones yet, but will be getting some soon. I just wish my local hobby stores sold it.

    So i had this idea of "amber" dice (a semi-transparent yellowish orange) with things "preserved" inside of them. perhaps you could find a dead insect in a window or something? i mean, it'd be kinda gross but i think the effect would be REALLY cool. otherwise a leaf or small plant would probably work too.
    Love your vids, keep up the good work!
