Google Nest Camera (with battery) - Review & Comparison (vs. old Google Nest Outdoor Camera)

  • In this video I will review and compare the new Google Nest Camera with the old Google Nest Outdoor Camera. Since the camera is only attached with a magnet, I chose to install the recommended Wasserstein Anti Theft Mount as well. The new Google Nest Camera is really quite larger then the older version, but is it always better? I will show video’s from different times of the day from both camera’s so you can judge for yourself as well.
    Also see my follow-up video about the video quality at night with the Wasserstein Anti-Theft Mount as well:
    • HOW TO IMPROVE your GO...
    And also my review about the Google Nest Doorbell:

    Excellent video! Were you using the anti-theft mount for the night footage? I read on Reddit that it degrades the night vision by interfering with the IR lights. Also was the (old) Outdoor Cam quality set to High? It looked a bit more pixelated than my Outdoor cams. Looking forward to getting a few of the battery cams, although I will have them hardwired. Keep up the great work on your videos!

      Thanks a lot TofuRobots! I was indeed using the anti-theft mount while making the night footage and also the old outdoor cam was set to high. How did you know all this? It’s like you read my mind :p I will try to make another video at night without the anti theft mount! Will let you know the result.

    Helpful information, so thanks for posting. I miss the Outdoor IQ, and I wish I had bought 2-3 vs. the one I still have. It’s a shame that Google did not update the IQ Camera and chose to water down the camera options for late 2021. I’m considering the new floodlight camera and possibly a battery version. However, I would most likely opt for the hardwire installation because I want to see the history through my Aware account.

    • @Josh-White
      @Josh-White  2 роки тому +1

      In my experience you can still see the history through you Aware account, but exporting a videoclip is only possible if it’s registered as an event. With the older nest camera outdoor you can export clips even when it isn’t an event.

    A heads up for those using the Wasserstein Anti-Theft kit. It greatly reduces the camera’s night vision. The kits “hood” (area on top that sticks out) is causing glare to reflect back down to the camera lens. You can correct this by painting the inside of the anti-theft kit black.
    Another thing, you really shouldn’t be reviewing the product with additional 3rd party kits. Your review should have been just based on what comes out of the box.

    • @Josh-White
      @Josh-White  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Roberto, thank you for your feedback. I learned my lesson! It's true what you say, the anti theft mount makes night vision less effective. If you make the inside black, you fix this. See also my follow-up video about it. Good day!

    I was able to migrate my old cameras to the new Nest Aware and now have new and old on the same app. I didn't seem to have the issues you did with viewing history. I do wish the batter would last longer. Taking it down and charging it is such a pain. A clever criminal will just wait until then. Thanks for the work and effort put in to your review. I am very disappointed with no 24 hour/10 day recording Nest Aware with my original DropCam and my Nest Outdoor. I am looking for rats that don’t trigger a record like the raccoon . The rats are stealing the food from my raccoon traps. Will not buy another unless Aware resumes 24 hour continuous recording.

    My theft proof cable mounts directly to the camera without the collar. I’ve had them installed since first of the year and so far they are good. I hard wired both of them using the 30’ charging cords. Mounted both of mine under the eves so protected by weather and a little too high to be reached from the ground.

  • @SW4Life202
    @SW4Life202 2 роки тому +1

    Interestingly enough my reason for replacing my old Nest Outdoor camera was that a few months back, a really strong wind blew my window trim off with the camera attached, and it dangled and banged on the side of the house for about a day until I got home ruining the power cord in the process. I had the Asurion protection for home electronics and they paid me $180 (sans $50 I paid for a deductible), so I decided to wait until this was released so that it would release feel like I was upgrading my camera.

    • @Josh-White
      @Josh-White  2 роки тому

      Gosh, hopefully you didn't have more damage from that strong wind and luckily that you have that insurance! Our cameras are now attached with that anti-theft mount from Wasserstein, but maybe I'll also install them wired just to be safe (it saves charging again).

    Great review! Did I understand you correctly that you can't look back 3 hours if you don't use the wire? So it doesn't actually record anything except for events that you decide on in the settings? I'm interested in getting the camera for my dogs indoors, do you think that's a good ide?

    • @Josh-White
      @Josh-White  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Agnes, without Aware you can only save 3 hours of events. Also without a power cable this camera only saves events, so you cannot look back at your video that isn’t registered as an event. With pets I would go for an installation with power cable. This camera is less sensitive to events (compared to the older version) but there are some settings that you can adjust. Right now I found that it isn’t possible at all to export video’s that isn’t marked as an event. Hope this helps!

    • @Josh-White
      @Josh-White  2 роки тому

      In my opinion, the Motion sensor of the old nest outdoor camera is generally better. Sometimes the cats of the neighbors come to our backyard, but I no longer receive a notification (that option is turned on). The camera sees people quickly and face recognition also works quickly. I also once experienced that the camera did not see me while I was in front of the camera… I don't get a notification about trees because I didn't include them in the event area.

    This is disappointing. I am invested in Google products including Nest Cams. I had the original Drop Cams before google bought them out. When I needed to switch wi-fi with a new router and service, I could no longer register the old Drop Cams with the Nest app either by USB or QR code. I had to toss the old Drop cams and purchase new Nest indoor and outdoor cameras. I can still use the Nest app on my smartphone and through my home computer. I get 24/7 video recording and can make my own video clips and download them. I was going to buy a Nest doorbell but found that I would be unable to use the Nest Home app and only be able to connect it to the Google Home app makes no fucking sense at all. No 24/7 recording either. I understand that a new generation of products will come on the market which necessitates changes. But this costs money to the consumer. If I find that I will not be able to migrate my old cameras to the new app, I will dump the nest cams and go with something else. I've already invested nearly $2000 on Drop and Nest cams over the past 11 years.

    This camera is ok HOWEVER the Nest app is SUPERIOR to the home app Google forces you to use, hell the even original Dropcam app was better. So let me explain why the home app is sh*t. First the user interface on the Nest app is wayyyy better it's instant unlike the home app that you need to go through different steps before you can even open your camera. If you want to record a video or even the time lapse feature well that's all gone (This is if you signed up for the Nest Aware plus plan which gives you 60 days of event an 10 days of 24/7 recording) in the home app. To record an event in the home app from your camera you have to go to history then scroll to event details, click on event details and finally press the download arrow, allow google to access your photos and finally the event clip is downloaded! As noted no recording of any of the 24/7 non event notification videos, so e.g. the camera doesn't record an event because as we all know this camera has a cool down period where it wont give you an event notification after it just gave you one but will still record...so you scroll back and see something another event it failed to capture maybe a criminal who left your house after he triggered the camera and then came back again! No way to record that second event. This is all assuming again you have the Nest Aware Plus subscription.👎 THey should call this camera the Goggle camera not worthy of Nest name!!
