      Whether you like it or not driving your own car will one day become illegal simply for safety reasons. Humans make more mistakes than machines if perfected. Once autopilots/computers become perfected to an acceptable degree we'll have to make the switch just like trains/airplanes are mainly run by autopilot. Personally I don't think it'll happen in our lifetime since autopilot has only become practicable in cars recently (within the last 5 years) and trains/airplanes still require a human at the controls to lift off and land.

The world needs more people like Elon Musk, more visionaries, more people who don't compromise. Given the means, there is no car I would buy over this one.

    • @sammyloid8031
      @sammyloid8031 10 років тому +4

      ForeskinMan It's similar to the reason Macs don't get that many viruses. You need to fully understand the OS of the car as well as the language used which is probably classified for this purpose. I'm sure it's possible to get a virus for one of these cars, but I'm sure the chances of getting it by accident are waaaaaaay less than getting in an automobile accident with a normal car. Also, viruses are NOT self propagating. Meaning they need some user input for installation and use. The only way one of these could be hacked is if someone somehow created a media music file or a phone number that somehow got into the OS's hard code via knowledge of the OS and OS language (again, something that is most likely classified). I seriously doubt they would release a car into market that has internet capability without taking huge precautionary steps into OS security. As far as important data corruption is concerned (car's software to cause it to run), IF that were to happen at all, most OS devices have some sort of factory reset setting that can either be done by yourself or at a factory. But I'm sure the chances of that happening at all are super rare, let alone from maleware.
      TL;DR You have a greater chance of getting hit by lighting twice in a row with a meteorite in between than getting this thing hacked.

    Expensive? Please. I have no idea why all these people are talking about a Model S like it's an expensive car. Here's some simple math in a 12-year TCO analysis. Subaru Outback Limited = $38k off the lot. Add $7k in maintenance and (get this) almost $50k in gas over 12 years. And that's assuming gas prices stay stable. (LOL) You're at $95k now to own an Outback for 12 years. Or, buy a Model S for $85k, add $10k in electricity, a few k for maintenance. Same cost. Which would you rather own? Which is better for the planet? Would you rather vote with your dollars and have oil companies taking your money, or a company that's investing in renewable energy and trying to change the world? I know a lot of people who own a Model S and none of them are "rich". Just average peeps making a smart decision. I got a Leaf a couple months ago and love it. Upgrading to a Model S for Xmas.

      Don't tell me to read about it, I study it. You are the one spooting some Insane CLown Posse bullshit. We know about the force of electromagnetism, we know how it works in our every day world and beyond, we can describe its mechanisms and the various ways it interacts with other parts of the universe. There is no indication in our modern understanding of science that would indicate that the force of electromagnetism has a more fundamental structure. String theory does point to that, but it's a mathematical model that hasn't been observed in anyway. Even if we don't fully comprehend electromagnetism at the fundamental level, it has absolutely nothing to do with the Tesla Model S. You think they made the car up? That they messed with batteries and ended up with a vehicle without knowing every single relevant aspect of it? You think we build a society heavily relying on electricity without knowing what it is? There is a difference in not knowing what something is and not knowing what we can fully accomplish with it. What about you go read books that aren't pop science and stop pretending things?

    Three problems:
    1) The fact that the majority of interior functions are on that screen. Not only was it difficult to do some of the most basic functions while driving, but if that screen were ever to malfunction or break for whatever reason, it would be a MASSIVE inconvenience.
    2) The quality of the interior is not up to competitor standards. Yes, the rest of the car is fantastic, but you get the sense that because Tesla made the rest of the car as good as it is, they were not able to invest much in the interior quality. The interior of an Audi A6/7, BMW 5/6 series, and the MB E/CLS Class are examples of what interior quality should feel like in this class of cars.
    3) The biggest issue I have at the moment, is still charging. Yes, it charges very very quickly, but not quick enough. Until you can pop into a station for 5 minutes and leave with a full charge, at any and every place you may find a gas station, this will remain a problem for anyone driving long trips, or forgot to charge or could not charge enough at home, or at another charging station.

    • @TheaDragonSpirit
      @TheaDragonSpirit 10 років тому +12

      Yes I always go home with out putting petrol in my car. And in the morning when I have to go somewhere and there is no petrol I am screwed. I mean the chances of forgetting is not likely and over the next two years charge ports will be everywhere, however the time it takes to charge is a pain I admit, but at the same time people should only be driving for around 150 miles before having half an hours break, so they designed it like this on purpose. To force people to take breaks and be healthy. Which in my opinion is a good thing. And no one would forget to charge before a long trip, and no one is going to use 250 miles in a small town, I am pretty sure the car would make it very clear and remind you easily if you have less than 50 miles that it needs charging. No one will forget if it pesters them a little.
      Interior design, and quality is subjective to taste. I am pretty sure you could take a sledge hammer to the consoles and they would not break, and poor liquids all over them. Since it would be in the rain a lot I am pretty sure they though about this.
      I think this is nit picking and you probable are worried about car sales for your company.
      The only thing I would agree about is the speed of the charge. And moores law shows that every 18 months tech improves drastically that means give it 3 years and I am sure the charge will be a lot faster and probable not need to be charged as much. Meaning you will rarely have to charge.
      The future is electric and eco-friendly. That is what people want.

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 10 років тому

      1) Having a petrol car is different than having a Tesla. Trust me on this one, as it stands now the Tesla is just another electronic device when it comes to the charging aspect. People forget to charge their phones from time to time, I guarantee they will forget to charge their Tesla. As a matter of fact, people often forget to charge their Chevy Volts and Priuses. What makes you think they'll remember to charge their Tesla?
      2) No one wants anyone, or any car, telling them what to do. They don't want a car telling them to take a break at a certain interval, because they can't do anything to speed up the process. Furthermore, how saint-like do you think you have to drive to get the Tesla-claimed figures? From my experience, whenever I wanted to get on the power, which is very often in this car, the range drops. This is actually another problem I have with EVs. They can't hold their range when driven hard. Then with 30 minute charging times inbetween, it's unacceptable for someone trying to have a good time (which is something Tesla is trying to cater to, in my opinion, seeing as they had the M5 in their sights).
      3) Take a sledgehammer to any car, and see if the interior holds up. Jesus, do you think about what you're saying? In addition, when do you ever see rain getting on the center console? Maybe on the doors, or the seats when you open and close the doors, but when the hell will the center console ever be exposed to rain? In any case, interior quality is NOT subjective. Interior design is subjective, but quality is NOT. The seats in the Tesla are rubbish, in both the way they hold you in place, and the materials used for this class of vehicles. The real estate used in controls are also terrible. I can go on and on about this subject. The Model S is a great car, but it fails miserably in this subject.
      4) "I think this is nit picking and you probable are worried about car sales for your company." I can assure you I am not worried about any sales for any manufacturer. There is no reason to be.
      5) You put so much emphasis on "I'm sure" this will happen, "in the future" this will happen. Until it happens, or is proven will happen, it is just speculation.
      6) Other than your tree-huggers and environmentalist, no one gives two shits about being eco-friendly when it comes to cars, otherwise everyone would be driving Priuses and Teslas. They buy EVs because they want to save money on gas.

    • @ghuegel
      @ghuegel 10 років тому +7

      On charging problems... they've demoed a battery switching system that can switch the battery out in less time than it takes to fill up a gas tank. It'll be a few years before the infrastructure is sufficient to make Teslas as convenient as gas cars, but if the company is successful, the convenience is coming. Your scenario of having them at every place you buy gas is fundamentally unnecessary for these cars because most charging would be done at home... if you had a bottomless tank of gas at home, how often would you use a gas station?

      The dash said he was using 1200 w/hrs or 1.2kw/hrs per mile. I pay 11.2 cents per kilowatt hour.
      So for me the car would cost more money than gas is right now. If you have a gasoline engine that avgs 20mpg in the city you'd be paying 2.24 per "Gallon" Gas here is 1.99

      in various videos of real usage you can see that the average consumption of a Model S is about 200 W*h/km, that's about 320 W*h/mi

    Yeah there sure is allot of fancy gimmicks in that car but you do not have it in a more simple form? Allot of these gimmicks looks like it will be bothersome at a cold winter specially those door handles.

I even heard one of them saying the range was not hindered that much and there was no issue with the door handles failing to work. He even mentioned the handle concern specifically and said it was a non-issue...

      Coal is primarily used to generate electricity, then hydel power, then oil then nuclear, geothermal.
