After Season 2's patch and the major buffs Ryu got. I don't see him in tournaments lately. One player by the name of Endingwalker used to play him heavily. Now he it seems he has gone back to Ed full time.

I think one problem if we’re honest is new players gravitate towards him, and experienced players generally think hes too vanilla.
I think the problem Ryu has is that there's always been a better Ryu in Luke and now Akuma
The simple truth, people are dumb as sheep. Sheep who follow “numbers”. Because of youtube, twitter, and other forms of social media people are saying Ryu is the worst shoto; because no one is picking him and winning tournaments; because no one is posting going on insane win streaks with him; because comments like the one person in the comment section who just ignorantly stated that Ryu is the worst shoto. These are the reasons why. But for us who play Street Fighter - us who understand and utilize the fundamentals, neutral, footsies, frame data, etc…, it’s clear that Ryu is a monster now. Boring is shotos in general. Honestly Akuma is more boring in this version of Street Fighter then he’s ever been anywhere else. I honestly dont like that you can combo into Ragining Demon off of a hit. The huge appeal (to me, as a grappler player as well) is catching the opponent with their guard down and punishing them immensely for it. Akuma just has all the tools (as he should) but the devs also made it so that using those tools takes no skill or brain power. It all just works for free no need outplay your opponent or play shifty. Just oppress them with overwhelming poke pressure and frame advantage. Outsmarting them and taking their life away is fun to me. Ryu can doing that perfectly in this patch. Bison and Zangief can do it really well too. You can truly play Street Fighter and outplay your opponent now, even with Drive/Perfect Parry. Ryu is easily top 10, but at the same time there are like 15 characters legitimately in the top 10 lol.
Yeah there are other shotos as just better.
Only players who understand neutral can play him . I say Ryu is better than Akuma in this season 2 hands down . Ryu is just an honest character everyone knows his moves so you’re never really surprised with his gameplan but if someone is fundamentally sound then he shines .
I don’t think Ryu is better than Akuma. He’s pretty good but he’s still def the worst shoto.
