They're probably not going to learn anyway. Things like this happen because the logic behind why these sorts of cash grabs happen ("It's a recognizable and popular brand!") is logic Hollywood investors and executives more interested in opening weekend revenues than in long term marketability readily accept in pitch meetings, with the added benefit that it's a kind of logic that is the least threatening to the job security of people who make these pitches, and a lot of other people involved in the project ("Gee I don't really know why it bombed, all our marketing research showed this property is very popular with this target demographic"). And also, even if they could understand exactly why something like this would flop in hindsight, there is a good chance they probably wouldn't care.

The combination of mass advertisement, the general public, and people watching it ironically is something I think is really wrong with the film industry. Big name producers like Sony know that even if a movie is terrible, it'll probably be a financial success if they just market it right, so they end up being rewarded for bad behavior and laziness, which in turn encourages doing it more. Thanks for going and seeing this movie so we didn't have to!
I don't understand why anyone would ever think this was a good idea in the first place. If they thought about for five seconds they'd realize that was a shitty idea. Unlike the Lego Movie, you don't really have all that much freedom with the story or characters. You can build anything from Legos but emojis are limited. They're in a phone and have only one thing defining them. It just seems pointless.

I'm a person with a controversial opinion. I liked movies such as Cars, Cars 2, the Hotel Transylvania movies, Ratchet & Clank, and Shrek 3 and 4. But I absolutely *hated* The Emoji Movie.
Yeah, I think most people that gave this film a thrashing will end up behaving towards the "normies", as the assimilated does to those that aren't in Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Yeah, as Landon said, the cancellation of the Popeye movie and the greenlighting of The Emoji Movie was done by two different management team, and don't relate to one another. That was when the big Sony hack happened, and the whole studio leadership changed.
If would've being better if they focus on the boy instead. Sure it sound redundant but at least it will have a focus and character development than just these one note cliche emoji characters.
I really wish people would stop watching this movie ironically. I'm not even seeing it myself, since I've already seen Wreck it Ralph, Inside Out, and The Lego Movie. (Which were all actually good movies, as well.) Since this movie is likely a cash grab aimed at normies, if it makes money, whether for good or bad reasons, we're probably gonna see a sequel, along with other movies that are basically spin-offs of the same concept. And things can only get worse from there.
The joke about the emoticons as the elderly really pissed me off. You can tell they were obviously trying to push for a wider audience just from that lame joke. This movie is pandering to the nth degree.

It's sad that Sony Pictures Animation is gonna get so much undeserved hate for this. Don't get me wrong, I think this movie is a pile of garbage, even though I haven't seen it yet (probs will Netflix it). But this whole thing is not the studio's fault IMO. I can definitely see that they honest to God tried to make it as fun and creative as possible, despite the bad concept and script they were forced to work with because of the executives. This movie definitely won't stop me on liking and rooting SPA. There's a crapton of talent there, and they have such a unique, cartoony visual style. The creative force is definitely there. I personally love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania for their humor and visual style. I also think Smurfs: The Lost Village was a good film, and disagreed with the critics. Plus, they have many creative projects on the pipeline, like Vivo, made with Lin-Manuel Miranda, an untitled film directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Shannon Tindle, and I'm confident about the Spider-Man Animated Film, since that one's written by Lord/Miller. And yeah, there are far worse studios out there, even in the mainstream. So yeah, don't hate the studio for this film, hate the execs!
I feel that this is karmic retribution for Sony pictures after canning the Popeye movie. I can only hope that this will be the movie that the studio will never recover from.
It is. RT Score stands at %6 That's just ABOVE Food Fight. BO Mojo adjusted Weekend Gross, it opened with $24.5 Million, NOT $25 million of its $50 million budget. And its IMDB score is 1.4. That's Tentacolino levels of Suck.(Excluding the obvious trolled reviews giving it a perfect score.)
Same thing, I watched both and the difference on quality is huge I rated Norm of the North 4.7/10 While Emoji Movie is a the very bottom of a list with 170+ movies with 1.9/10. Just to get an idea, I HATED movies I rated below 4/10. That's the limit and the Emoji Movie went the extra mile.

Emoji movie seems exactly like a thing the theater class I was in would have made. We made a pOKEMON GO MUSICAL AND I WAS AGAINST IT AND TRIED TO SAVE IT AFTERWARDS BY MAKING COOL TRANSITIONS WITH JOKES SO THAT PEOPLE COULD LOOK AT THEM AND GET SOMETHING OUT OF THE THING (and two actors also tried to save it by adding actually great comedy) but in the end the plot was boring and pokemon go wasn't even the main element so I don't see why we called it the pokemon go musical :/
WE tried to make it a comedy but the only times anyone laughed were one joke in my transitions and some stuff that those two actors did. And when one of the backstage people somehow fell down from the stage sitting on a chair.
There's only one thing in the movie that I even find remotely funny and that's the emoticon's being the elderly. I know its sounds stupid and the movie was awful but literally the only thing I found funny.
I don't like how some things in the movie make no sense: 1. You can't delete internet trolls, they are annoying online users of app not apps nor games. 2. You can't delete 99% percent of your phone and cancel the deleting and then magically get all of it back. 3. How come the anti-virus bots don't constantly chill at the picarcy app since there are so many viruses and spam. 4. How come the Poop Emoji doesn't make poop stains everywhere 5. How come none of flag emojis appeared and talked during the emoji movie. 6. Why doesn't Alex just power off his smartphone.
Is it weird to say that I thought this movie wasn't that bad? Don't get me wrong. The fact that an animation studio went through with this concept is baffling to me. But for what it was, it could have been way worse. I kinda liked the characters, I laughed at some jokes, the animation was pretty nice, and the story was at least coherent. And yeah, it's a clear ripoff of The Lego Movie, Inside Out and Wreck it Ralph (which are all way better movies), but at least it still has its own identity (kinda?). Sony has made much worse movies than this. I'm not saying any of you are wrong for hating it, but I do get the feeling that some of you are overreacting. This movie is not the armageddon of animation or anything like that. It's a cash-in, but one that I kinda enjoyed. This is my ultimate guilty pleasure.

I gained nothing from this movie. The poorly delivered "be yourself" message was something done thousands of times and done in much better ways. The settings, characters, and dialouge had nothing thought-provoking, and they were either unlikable or uninteresting. They tried to include messages about "living your own life" or "women deserve respect", but they either contradicted the message or slapped it on a scene in the worst way possible. They didn't try to be creative, they didn't try to say something that could impact how we see the world. No, they just failed in every aspect. I walked out of the theater feeling empty, cold, and slighty angry, and I would recommend this to someone who wishes to become a more hollow person. 💩
I haven't watched it, but judging by the images you showed, I honestly think the visual design of the human characters in the Emoji movie is much better than that of Inside Out. Credit where credit is due.

Lego movie worked because it had strong writing and had a reason why to be made besides sell toys.

I don't understand why anyone would ever think this was a good idea in the first place. If they thought about for five seconds they'd realize that was a shitty idea. Unlike the Lego Movie, you don't really have all that much freedom with the story or characters. You can build anything from Legos but emojis are limited. They're in a phone and have only one thing defining them. It just seems pointless.

I really wish people would stop watching this movie ironically. I'm not even seeing it myself, since I've already seen Wreck it Ralph, Inside Out, and The Lego Movie. (Which were all actually good movies, as well.) Since this movie is likely a cash grab aimed at normies, if it makes money, whether for good or bad reasons, we're probably gonna see a sequel, along with other movies that are basically spin-offs of the same concept. And things can only get worse from there.

It's sad that Sony Pictures Animation is gonna get so much undeserved hate for this. Don't get me wrong, I think this movie is a pile of garbage, even though I haven't seen it yet (probs will Netflix it). But this whole thing is not the studio's fault IMO. I can definitely see that they honest to God tried to make it as fun and creative as possible, despite the bad concept and script they were forced to work with because of the executives. This movie definitely won't stop me on liking and rooting SPA. There's a crapton of talent there, and they have such a unique, cartoony visual style. The creative force is definitely there. I personally love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Hotel Transylvania for their humor and visual style. I also think Smurfs: The Lost Village was a good film, and disagreed with the critics. Plus, they have many creative projects on the pipeline, like Vivo, made with Lin-Manuel Miranda, an untitled film directed by Kubo and the Two Strings' Shannon Tindle, and I'm confident about the Spider-Man Animated Film, since that one's written by Lord/Miller. And yeah, there are far worse studios out there, even in the mainstream. So yeah, don't hate the studio for this film, hate the execs!

Are there legitimate reasons to dislike those movies? Yes, especially for a film like the Bee Movie. Same goes for Shrek, which can arguably be more bland if you can't find humor in its blatant parodying of Disney tropes.

Emoji movie seems exactly like a thing the theater class I was in would have made. We made a pOKEMON GO MUSICAL AND I WAS AGAINST IT AND TRIED TO SAVE IT AFTERWARDS BY MAKING COOL TRANSITIONS WITH JOKES SO THAT PEOPLE COULD LOOK AT THEM AND GET SOMETHING OUT OF THE THING (and two actors also tried to save it by adding actually great comedy) but in the end the plot was boring and pokemon go wasn't even the main element so I don't see why we called it the pokemon go musical :/

There's only one thing in the movie that I even find remotely funny and that's the emoticon's being the elderly. I know its sounds stupid and the movie was awful but literally the only thing I found funny.
I don't like how some things in the movie make no sense:
1. You can't delete internet trolls, they are annoying online users of app not apps nor games.
2. You can't delete 99% percent of your phone and cancel the deleting and then magically get all of it back.
3. How come the anti-virus bots don't constantly chill at the picarcy app since there are so many viruses and spam.
4. How come the Poop Emoji doesn't make poop stains everywhere
5. How come none of flag emojis appeared and talked during the emoji movie.
6. Why doesn't Alex just power off his smartphone.
Remember this is a story about emojis ruining a kids life trying to fix their life. This was the greatest piece of trash I ever watched.

Is it weird to say that I thought this movie wasn't that bad?
Don't get me wrong. The fact that an animation studio went through with this concept is baffling to me. But for what it was, it could have been way worse. I kinda liked the characters, I laughed at some jokes, the animation was pretty nice, and the story was at least coherent. And yeah, it's a clear ripoff of The Lego Movie, Inside Out and Wreck it Ralph (which are all way better movies), but at least it still has its own identity (kinda?).
Sony has made much worse movies than this. I'm not saying any of you are wrong for hating it, but I do get the feeling that some of you are overreacting. This movie is not the armageddon of animation or anything like that. It's a cash-in, but one that I kinda enjoyed. This is my ultimate guilty pleasure.
Pluto Nash was promoted way more than the Emoji Movie. You couldn't watch a TV show without seeing the stupid ad with the Hillary-On-A-10k-Dollar-Bill joke.

I gained nothing from this movie. The poorly delivered "be yourself" message was something done thousands of times and done in much better ways. The settings, characters, and dialouge had nothing thought-provoking, and they were either unlikable or uninteresting. They tried to include messages about "living your own life" or "women deserve respect", but they either contradicted the message or slapped it on a scene in the worst way possible. They didn't try to be creative, they didn't try to say something that could impact how we see the world. No, they just failed in every aspect. I walked out of the theater feeling empty, cold, and slighty angry, and I would recommend this to someone who wishes to become a more hollow person.

I haven't watched it, but judging by the images you showed, I honestly think the visual design of the human characters in the Emoji movie is much better than that of Inside Out. Credit where credit is due.
