- If you're wondering when is the best time to go to Iki Island in the new Ghost of Tsushima DLC, be aware that there is a lot of discussion about when the new Iki Island expansion takes place. A ton of people feel, very strongly I might add, that it takes place after the main game ends. I disagree. In today's video we're going to go over why I feel that way.

I remember theres an exclusive line of dialogue when Jin is captured if you beat the main campaign. He says "Khotun Khan is dead" as an extra line
he says this if you beat the main campaign or not because he's bluffing
@@1C3TV i like that interpretation, a bluff to intimidate even after the end of the game, after the game he's bluffing about the samurai, before he's bluffing about the khan and/or about the samurai (matters if it's before or after he sends the message with his uncle to the main island)

Lol! I did the same thing. Came as soon as is popped up. I ended up clean out the island out and am now returning to Tsushima super powerful!

What's even more impressive is that if you go after completing the game you get several more interactions that are nit there going as soon as you can. These devs are top notch

There's no way in hell they're not making a sequel. My game of the year as well.
The way I've been doing it is to wait until nearly all the activities in Toyatoma are done, then go to Iki just before going to Shimura's camp. My head canon is always that they're still waiting for the Shoguns reinforcements to arrive, so Jin takes the opportunity to investigate the island. It helps that theres a line saying the trip between Tsushima and the mainland is two weeks, meaning it should take over a month for the samurai to arrive after Shimura sends for them. To me, the story of Iki just makes more sense after Jin has been back to his home and talked about his father with Yuriko.
Cant argue with getting the awesome charms as soon as possible tho
I originally played the DLC after completing the main game.
I recently revisited it ASAP rather than post game, and it perfectly complements the main story!
I wouldn't say it spoils it at all, rather it does an excellent job of *foreshadowing* future events!
You'll also notice that certain things don't happen now that you went there ASAP. A lot of the hallucination spots are missing or they don't have the same hallucinations as they did before. I cant wait to see what SuckerPunch does next.
There is a boat and a dead body on the beach behind the Nakajima shrine. If you examine it, Jin gets hallucination about his conversation with uncle that happened in the ending I chose (idk if there is another hallucination for another ending)
What's interesting is that if you go to the island before that happens in the main game he has a different hallucination
I traveled to Iki right after rescuing your uncle, and he mentioned killing Khotun before I actually did. Was that apart of his bluff or something?
He is indeed bluffing. What he says in this scene doesn't change no matter when you go to Iki.

IIRC when you first get to kushi temple in act 2 I could have swore he says the monks are praying for a great storm to come and destroy the Mongolian fleet like a thousand samurai.
Now I'm a history buff so i know this wars end result but as far as the comparison.... I could be imaging it but I could have sworn.

It's masterful the way thus DLC is designed to be enjoyed no matter what your progression is in the game. I cant wait to see what comes next from these guys.
That was the best part about this DLC to me. The fact that the experience doesn't suffer based on the decision of when to go to Iki is top notch game design. I. Ant wait until GoT2

I unlocked this quest almost immediately after getting to island two and saw “new explorable region” as the reward, which sounded intriguing. I thought it was just going to be a quick little thing to do. I had no idea it was an expansion pack to the game. I’m playing on Lethal and feel incredibly underpowered here so it’s forced me into actually using a lot of the dishonorable tactics that my uncle/father have denounced. There was previously a disconnect because the story kept talking about all of the morally questionable tactics “The Ghost” was using despite me not really using them all that much outside of arrows. I’m becoming the monster my uncle/father/that caretaker lady warned against and it’s made me love the game even more. When I get back to the main island I think I’m going to try to limit myself to using subpar armor and stop upgrading weapons in order to force myself to keep fighting dirty to survive.

funny enough, its far more historically accurate for samurai to use bows than their sword since during that time(which is obviously not represented in the game for artistic reasons and gameplay) the tachi was way heavier than the later katana, which was more of a 14th onwards creation(i think) so even using the bow youre within your honor as a samurai

It's my first playthrough and I just went to Iki Island but when I heard what Jin said to the new Mongol leader I thought, "oh I'm not supposed to be here yet" and I quickly quit the game to get off the island. I wanted Jin's and his horse's armor and the flaming sword for when I attack the Khan but I wasn't sure if it would throw off the Storyline. Also Yuna coming out of nowhere and Jin saying "I told you not to come" made me think he mentions Iki Island only after the end of the main story. Now I must go. Iki Island awaits! Lol

getting the sarugami armor at the beginning of act 2 made the game a lot better
Must get the Sakai Horse Armor armor and Horse Dash ASAP!
You can tell it was a bluff and I love the detail that made me realise that when yuna came it was a hallucination because she asks when the reinforcement will arrive even tho he lied and yuna wouldn’t know

just started Iki Island at the end of act 1 when it came available, going to thoroughly enjoy this
I envy you. This is one of those games I wish I could go back and play for the first time all over again.
First time playing the game, got it with the new PlayStation game pass thing. I’ve done the first two main quests in act 2, and explored the map and done every side quest available. I’ve now sailed to Iki, and when Jin mentions Khotun Khans death and the samurai, I thought it was a bluff but also made me worried that there will be actual spoilers later on. The thing I don’t get is why the developers made it possible pretty much as you start act 2 if there is going to be spoilers. I don’t intend playing a second play through as I’m not going to have the Ps game pass thing for long, so I wanted to do everything I can before finishing the main game. So I thank you for this video. I’m glad there a no spoilers otherwise that would’ve been stupid on the developers side and frustrating on my side

In my game, at 0:49 jin just said that he had killed kothun when i hadn't finished the main story. But it doesn't affect the storyline
I'm a little ways into act 3. But it's comforting knowing I can go do iki island now and finish that content before wrapping up act 3.
The sad part is that since you lost your horse in Act 3, Jin just calls out "Horse" instead of using the name "Kage" or any other name you gave it, in the first cutscene on Iki Island. :(
I'm glad I upgraded to Directors cut. It was so worth it. I'm loving Iki Island so far. It made me love the game even more. Such an amazing addition to the game

I always went with main story first then DLC's since from Mass Effect 2.
I did same with other games like The Witcher 3, AC4: BF, Mafia 2-3, Saints Row 2-TT, Spider-Man, Fallout 3-NV-4 (NV can't do after story but can do before final quest as lot of alternate dialogues exist in DLC's) etc.

I agree the dlc should be explored as soon as possible. But there are some preparation player should make before go to the island. For example, unlocking stance by defeating mongol leader, because many mongol in iki are brute and some even are uniquely dual type wielder, so you have to switch stance mid fight against same enemy
Thanks for this explanation. I just finished the game first time on hard and ignored Iki and im glad I did. Jin leaving the island would take me out of the story and would make the game easier than it already is. Now that I'm in post will do Iki island.
I think the best time to do start Iki Island is just after Taka dies it serves near the end of act two, where the characters of main story too business to help Jin bond with those on Iki much deeper and understands their view how fluad his father was to make coming to terms with his lost more impactful
From a storytelling point that makes sense, but from a video game stance I prefer to go there ASAP so I can get all those charms as soon as they become available
@@1C3TV Though I do love gameplay of Ghost of Tsushima and I will not deny its importants but I am more of the story guy so what’s point playing the game if the story is shit. Also if Ghost of Tsushima ever gets a novelization and does include Iki Island that where I want to be. Though it is not likely happen but will nice to know greater detail what Jin was going through when first bends and breaks his code along with how viewed different characters as the story progresses
This is a well timed video, of course the UA-cam/Google algorithm. I was reading up on multiple threads where they debate when to go to Iki.
I think it takes place before the end of the main game. Cause they refer to him mostly as samurai. Not as "the ghost" outside if kenji and other during the ghost of iki side quest. And because he leaves to iki wearing the sakai clan armor and plot wise that's the armor Jin is wearing (regardless of what you have equipped)
What's amazing is that all of that actually changes depending in when you as the player decides to go to Iki.
@@1C3TV I'm started it after beating and platinuming/ 100%-ing the main game. And that's how it occurred for me. I didn't know it would change. Had the PS4 version since launch cause gamesharing with my brother. And bought Directors cut edition PS5 and just got around to playing it all cause the wifi is down. Before thst it was all playing legends mode.

Playing the game myself and about to watch this video, after doing the first 2 quests on Iki I would 100% say Jin should travel there before act 3.
playing through director cut and in my first playthrough i go when i finish act 2 bcs when act 3 the area in act 1 and 2 are locked. so i finish the mission first till the area are open and sail to iki. but what i realize is my horse is still not the named horse yet, so i have to reload the game to before i finish the act 2 and sail to iki.
after i finish the iki island story, my opinion is :
- if u go for the build, u can go to iki as soon as is open
- but if u go for the lore, i think u can go after u defeat khotun

The conversation with the Eagle does not change regardless of when you go which tells me he was bluffing.
So I just started Act 3 then I saw your video haha. Do you recommend me still finishing Iki island before I do act 3 or should I just finish act 3 then Iki Island?
It really depends in if you plan on replaying the game after you finish it. If not, go to Iki now. If you're gonna do a second playthrough, wait until after the main game.

Can you go back to the 2nd island during Act 3? I just finished the first mission on Act 3 where Jin and Yuna capture the shrine as their base.
Yes, I don't remember if it's block off for a little bit, but you can definitely go back to the 2nd island during act 3

I always suggest to people to play Iki Isle after the base game as there aren't only spoilers pertaining to the Khan but also the end of the base game. In addition to that, there are certain there are certain enemies that could be considered hard, even if you have all the upgrades. A personal thorn in my side being the brutes with the double-sided spear ends that they twirl about; which of course are even worse when they are being empowered by the Shaman chants. Also, given a certain resolve drain fx, the final bossfight can be quite difficult up to a certain point. Those I mention in my later point also being a reason why I keep to playing Iki Isle last even after knowing how everything goes down. So, if the sheer fact of when things take place timeline-wise making Iki Isle an Act 4 isnt enough for ya, consider the aforementioned reasons.

No, nothing gets locked out.
I just finished the game for the second time and both times I went to Iki island halfway through the second act. The horse abilities and horse armor are the best reason to go there as soon as you can.
If you get around to plating a third time, you should check out iki after besting the game. There are new cut scenes at hallucinations that aren't there when you go early.
THANK YOU. I've been trying to tell people about it was all a bluff over on the Ghost of Tsushima Discord but TIME AND TIME AGAIN everyone says the Khan thing is a spoiler when it’s clearly not and these guys take everything at face value

Iki is a step up in difficulty from Act 3 enemies, and you get more hallucinations in Iki if you did more stuff in Tsushima
It doesnt make sense for jin to be side tracked while the khan is still around. Also the hallucinations spoiler later cutscenes. And before you claim irs foreshadowing. The drug causes your mind to twist past memories. Traumas.
I was grinding side quests when I was done with act 1 and didn't know it was a long mission
Oh yeah, you're gonna be there for a minute. I highly recommend getting all the charms before leaving.

You can keep everything you gain from Iki Island no matter when you play it

I already finished the game and NG+ on my PS4 and playing it on my PS5 but let me tell you this. For new players, it would be best for them to visit Iki island after the story? Why? There's a specific line that Jin says when he met The Eagle that is kind of a huge spoiler.
Jin is bluffing in that line. Even after the events of the main game it's still a blatant lie. Think about it....
First time i played the iki expansion i did it after I completed the main game because I bought it day one, but I recently started a new save and went to iki as soon as it was available at the beginning of act 2, lets see how it goes

If Anyone is looking for confirmation, this dude is 100% right. I completed iki Island yesterday, and I haven’t played a single Act 2 mission yet.
Little advice: I don’t know if you are an adventure player like me who likes to explore every part of the map and do every side mission and collect things; if you are, you would love this. If you’re not, please do it at least for the iki island because the amount of reward charms you will get is unbelievable.
He didn’t even mention about your horse. You can make your horse look like a beast, and he gets so many tremendous powers. (you can get different armour and dyes for your horse)
Also, you might not be able to complete two or three shrines because you don’t have a few armours from the act 2-3, but don’t worry; you can always travel back and forth once the main story of Iki Island is completed.
but I would suggest you at least upgrade your katana before going there. Enemies are super powerful there, and once you learn how to defeat them and come back to act two, the combat will feel so easy that you will feel like you need to turn up the difficulty again. (in short, you get better)
And like he said, there are dozens of rewards, so I won't spoil just play it and use those power-ups later in the main mission; why wait till the end of that game?

In my opinion I don't like to go to iki until my horse is dead because idk why but I feel that in Iki you reinforce the bond with the horse so the death isn't that sad

Sorry for the late response. Personally I would recommend a new play through and then go to Iki right after you unlock the second area.

It honestly doesn’t make sense for Jin to leave Tsushima during Act II for seemingly a week or so. So much was going on during that period to pre occupy him. I understand that the growth Jin has on Iki can strengthen his transformation into the Ghost, but forgiving himself for his father’s death is arguably a separate issue when concerned with the honor code conflict in the main story. There are sound arguments for both sides and it just shows how well Sucker Punch framed this DLC. I’ve chosen Iki after Act III every time, but for my 4th playthrough I’ll find a spot in Act II to leave.
That's a fair assessment. I just recommend going after Act II because....well video games. The best charms are on that island. Plus, it's not like he CHOSE to stay there for a week. His boat got wrecked and he was stuck.

I left before ending the game and Jin told the Eagle he had killed the Khan already, that made it feel wrong to play before the main story, if the diologue is different on before act 3, then for me is worth it.
(WARNING this comment contains spoilers for this game) The best time to go to iki island is right before the end of act 2. Let me explain, so on the final mission of act 2 your horse dies but whenever you travel to iki island you get separated with your horse, all you have to do is not find your horse until you complete act 2, then go back, find your horse, complete iki Island's story, the save Tsushima from the mongols. (Please note I have not tried this method of saving Jin's horse yet so please let me know if it works or not)

@@1C3TV Well.. You're locked on Iki once you get there until you've completed certain missions and since finding your horse after arriving is one of the two first missions, this is simply not possible as you wouldn't be able to go back to Tsushima to complete act 2.
So no other spoilers on side missions or main missions while on Iki island?
That is correct. There are some areas that will trigger these weird flashback hallucinations but only if you've gotten far enough in the main story for it to be a "flashback"
@@1C3TV I’m in the early stages of act 2, would these hallucinations somewhat be regarded as “spoilers”? I went to iki island unaware that I couldn’t go back. But I love the idea of getting better tools to play with considering once you beat the game the iki island charms and armor would be somewhat useless

Once you go to Iki you're stuck there until you complete the main story line. Once you do though, you can travel back and forth freely.

Yes, so if you missed anything while you were there you can go back anytime.

It does not. There's one part where Jin bluffs that some argue is a spoiler, but Jin is literally bluffing.

There is a scene where Jin, Kage ( horse ) and a man leading the boat to Iki , there is a lightning storm fall upon and fully damaged the boat. at the sametime , horse got scared and Jin Sakai shouted the horse named " KAGE ! " In Fact , In the end of act 2 Jin Sakai horse is dead. Weirdly, in Iki Island expansion Jin still refer the horse as Kage. so this mean the story take place around Act 2 timeline right before the Kage's end.
But if you go to iki after getting a new horse he calls it by the new name

But storywise speaking jin himself says that Khotun khan is dead and he has killed him when he gets caught on iki island. So this dlc should be played at the end of main story
He also says a thousand Samurai will join him on the shores of Iki, which would make no sense after the events of the main story
Yeah I'm pretty sad I started it cause as I faced this witch Jin said that we killed khotun Chan so it was kinda spoiler...
There are some scenes that spoil the main game for sure inside jin's head
From my experience those scenes only happen if you've already experienced the events in the main game before heading to Iki Island
@@1C3TV that means it's better to finish the game first to have full experience, in a mission there was a guy talking about jin's grappling hook and jin spoil things
I respectfully disagree. Jin gets his grappling hook before he can go to Iki Island. If events don't unfold before going there Jin doesn't spoil anything because it hasn't happened yet
What is that beautiful armor
That is the fully upgraded Ghost armor with the Avengring Spring dye. It unlocks after completing the main story. I think you have to buy it from a dye vendor in New Game+
What i dont get is jin in the end he NOT a samurai he the ghost! So him saying millions of samurais going to saved him dont make sense in the end.

Im glad I didnt see this video on my first playthrough, but I also did exactly what was suggested and got me some overpowered stuff. Manhandled the Kahn at the end, made him my bitch. Err...geisha.
I ignored Iki Island because i didn't want to get off track with the main storyline.

Strap in and enjoy the ride my friend. Personally I feel it's better to go there right away.
Why bother trying to leave the island when you can explore Iki Island, yeah you might not have the right outfits for the statues but it's okay there's some other fun activities you can do around the island

I’m just now realizing that IKI island is The DLC🥴 I’m getting my butt served defeat after defeat 😅 the big guys that switch weapons are so tough
Id rather play and clear Iki island DLC after liberating the first 3 main regions then go for NG+ in lethal.

The main story of this game is very easy, there is literally no need to make it easier. However if you go to Iki island first chance you get the difficulty spike is massive, you are not going to have a good time. The end of Act 2 or at the end of the game is much more appropriate. You dont need the extra charms to enjoy this game, this game is literally unplayble in anything but the Lethal difficulty after a certain point.
When you finish the game
As someone who has played both the main game iki Island, when looking at the scene Jin has to be bluffing, because if we follow the story's logic then there isn't a single samurai coming to Iki Island unless they're coming after Jin. Jin has no back up regardless of when you play Iki, regardless of whether or not the Kahn has been defeated at this point. Everything he says is a bluff.

@@1C3TV right, right. I always thought since Jin was so apprehensive about wearing his father's armor that it made more sense that he would go before getting the Sakai armor. It offers Jin a way to have closure before donning his father's armor. Plus, and maybe I'm reaching but the line where Jin says to his uncle, "I am not your son", actually holds more weight after considering the revelations Jin about his past and his father. Plus plus, really reaching here but, getting the Sakai Horse Armor first makes more sense if you think about it. In a way it almost prepares him to don his father's armor just as everything else that happens on Iki. What I normally do is the main missions aside from getting the armor while finishing up the side missions with Yuna, Ishikawa, Masako, Kenji and Norio in between then I head to Iki Island before getting the armor. I did some rough math and some educated guesses and found that the story of Iki would be set within roughly 2 weeks or so and depending on how long it took Goro to make it to the mainland with Shimura's request for reinforcements it would take the Shogun at least a couple weeks to get the samurai ready to go and set sail. Jin would have enough time to make the trip to Iki and return just as Lord Shimura is readying his forces for the attack. It's plausible at the least.
Damn, this is hard.... There's a line of dialogue on Iki Island. Kenji. He says that he was caught stowing away on the Viper's ship that was on its way to the mainland. I never thought about it before, Kenji wouldn't be on his way to mainland Japan. At least not during the second act. Him and Taka seemed like close friends, they were always hanging out together. I can justify Kenji being there alone during act 2 but the fact that he was trying to go to the mainland is the part that makes it hard to believe Iki takes place during that time. I hate to say it but Iki has to come after the main game. It just sucked cause the end to Iki after rescuing Funes daughter, is kinda anti-climactic. But other than that small line of dialogue it very well could've fit within the overall story. Would've made a much more conclusive ending to the story as a whole.

I regret listening to your advice. I went to Iki island right after finishing act 1. It is impossible to unlock the shrines in Iki island unless you get armours from finishing act 2. I recommend nobody to do the same mistake. Better to play this at least after act 2 or even after finishing the game.
I had no issues unlocking any of the shrines in Iki. Why are you having difficulty?

It's a dramatic increase in difficulty until you start collecting some of the gear from Iki 😆

Calling it a bluff is coping. The items there are very strong and thats why people do it as soon as they can.
What? He is bluffing, the dialogue doesn't change at any point in the main story, so he'll just say the same thing
I've been replaying and I agree with you. Also it's my head canon that jin goes to the iki island he previously freed to escape the hunt for him. Finding safety in the island of raiders.

lol when this dlc first came out there was a huge debate about this scene. To this day some people still argue about it
If it’s your first play through don’t go there until you finished the game it serves zero purpose chronologically story wise and going back to Tsushima island after it is gonna make the game much easier than it already is. If you’re on new game + than go there whenever you want
