I use real coal for my coal loads in HO scale and Lionel 027 scale. I have a great big lump of bituminous coal I used a hammer on and smashed it to bits for HO scale and the larger bits for Lionel 027. Cheers from eastern TN
I use a urethane foam form which I sand to shape. I paint it matt black and apply glue and sprinkle on fine coal which I collected at a railroad coal unloader. There is no need to spray any paint over it as you have the real fair dinkum coal for your load. You can't get a more authentic load than that! They are also light weight so a long train is easy to pull.
Your loads came out nice... I just take a piece of foam and a pair of scissors and contour it to fit the car and make it look like a load on top... paint it flat black, brush white glue on it and sprinkle a similar coal load (Woodland Scenics) on top.... have a good weekend.. DD 🤗
I breed tropical fish and use fish tank gravel for course coal loads it comes in black ($20 for a 5kg bag) and also use pool filter sand ($25 for a 30kg bag) and paint it black to simulate the coal.. I need to make a video and put it on my channel..... I do not see why so many people pay a fortune for things like this or Woodlands scenic imitation coal and other such things from the hobby shops when you can get it 1/3 or less prices elsewhere or use your brains to find other cheaper items to make similar-looking items. Your wagons still need weight in them as they rock about on the track and if you were still using the plaster it would add weight to the load as you are making them.....
I love your set up but ALL your Coal Hopper Cars look like They all came out of the Paint Shop. You need to dirty your Cars. I used windshield wiper fluid and flat model Paint. I left One Car untouched to bring a Contrast to Coal Train.
Great looking coal loads, thank you for sharing your techniques!

Nice job good looking loads
I guess this method might work on N Scale loads as well. I'll have to give it a shot and see. Thanks for sharing your method with us.
