Your attention to detail is impeccable! Love it that you take us through the whole process step-by-step. Thanks, man.
It is something I like to see in a video 😁
Another excellent tutorial - the pace of presentation is brisk (I watch twice) and I love it. Pure potent relevancy and no fluff, inactive ingredients, filler, or BS
This is a new way to use Obsidian. It's incredible what is possible with the plugins!! Thank you for your explanation!
Thanks for this clear Metadata menu tutorial. This is really great!
The most dense video about obsidian in your channel.11/10
Excellent video, Danny! Many thanks, I have a similar setup and found some answers to questions I had for a long time!
Ah glad to hear it.
Fantastic video!
Awesome, I was hoping for a good explanatory video for this plug-in 👍
This is the best video ever! Congrats 🎉
Wow very good explanaition of all functions for this plugin. Especially the editable dataview table blew me away.
Yeah it is a great plugin with plenty of options 😁
A clear and detailed demonstration of the features and functionality of the Metadata Menu plugin. The plugin author should link this video in the plugin documentation; I'm certain it would be helpful for those just starting to use the plugin as well as a good reference point for those who already have some experience in its use.
Awesome is right. Tried to get this off the ground previously but finally gave up. Danny, you explain complex topics exceptionally well! Most of your content was covered by the plugin author -- the difference is your color commentary. Thanks! Looking forward to your build on the same!
My vault combines lots of plugins so trying get the foundations out there first 😆

keep it on 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very few UA-cam videos are this detailed, and this specific. Worth downloading the transcript and following along.
this is so effing useful man! the possibility to make math between key value pairs is just what I needed for tracking some stuff. Thanks!
Fantastic!!!
With so many plugins and so much complexity, if something breaks or does not work as expected, we will spend hours or days finding the fault. Powerful plugin though.
If you don't have the expertise with the plugin - yes.
That is the same with most tools with this level of extensibility tho, right?
I will watch it 2-3 times more then I will comment. Thanks for this awesome tutorial. I was waiting for this so long😊.
thx for teaching
Wow. Just... wow. This video is so dense.
Usually, I crank up the playback speed on YT videos. Couldn't do that here. This video is just too, too, full of information to digest at 2x.
Great work, Danny.
👍
Thanks!!
This plugin is amazing!
As always, an excellent vidoe. I use the plugin since it's first release. I wished, i had this video before diving in the deep black see of dataviewjs and the fieldmodifiers on my own.
This is simply great - I can’t wait to see the promised sequel! I am very glad you made it. I was going to wait and see how Datacore will change all this before plunging into Metadata Menu. But you gave me one reason for not waiting 🎉 - any news about Datacore?
The developer has been quiet so I am not sure... 🤷♂️
Informative as always. Just one suggestion - maybe a short 30 sec overview (or link to an overview) of what the plugin actually does for Obsidian users before launching into the setup details.
Yeah, on reflection that would be helpful.
It was suggested by a couple of others.
I tried to keep the length short but overlooked an overview.
I was looking for just this 🤣. Brb!
Danke!
The editable Dataview query seriously needs it’s own video. That alone would have taken me a whole workday to figure out on my own.
Thank you so for this video!
Such an important video that I watched at x1 speed. Thanks Danny.
I tried watching at 1.5x but end up rewinding every few seconds... Should've read your comment first. Huhu
Beato te che ci riesci. Per me 0.75x è perfetto. Poi non capisco perché fare polemica.
@@giovannigraziani80 Devo rallentare il francese fino a x0.5. Buona giornata.
Very helpful. For lookup fields, if the title has a comma in it, lookup doesn't work properly.
You made my transition from notion easy and possible
Regarding "Accept A Link". For those, like me, who are JS untutored the reference to the dv.pages requires that the folder be specified with a backtick around the quotation marks, thus ` " Author " `. (The spaces are only inserted for clarity).
Heads up to those new to Metadata Menu -
If you're following this tutorial and don't have clipboard icons in your tabs and on your fileClass folder files, restart obsidian.
Hopefully I saved you 5 minutes :)
Thanks - i havent experienced a delay but that wouldn't suprise me with Obsidian and plugins 😁
I had to Sign Out of Windows before the icons would show
I can't get them to show up even after restarting the whole computer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@jrock24melon All I can think of is checking the class folder is accurate and then right clicking the class file to adjust the metadata.
@@jrock24melon Just click on the file in your class folder made the icons appear for me (Manjaro Linux).
Just working my way through this video which is excellent, and I have recently been using quickadd to start a page that incorporated yaml metadata (by your suggestion) , and it looks like this Metadata Menu plugin process could be used update and add other types of metadata to that new page template or perhaps even replace the quickadd process .... very helpful! Thanks!
I combine quick add, commander and this plugin 😁
@@DannyHatcherTech I tried to add a Status field to a page that had preexisting YAML but it created a new yaml section, and now I am thinking that this will this only work on a new page without pre existing YAMl info? Perhaps this is addressed later in the UA-cam, but my hope was that it would incorporate the new status along with the pre existing YAML.
Question:
I want to be able to list the number of tasks inside of a project and count that number as a formula (tasksFinished/tasksTotal) but don't see any way to globally access the task count from the tasks view. I'm searching for tasks within a tag to find them and show them on the associated project page, so the tasks are not actually located within the project page itself. Would you know how I would go about this?
There are lots of different methods to do this.
The tasks plugin and dataview plugin are the most popular options for managing tasks.
By the sounds of it dataview will be best suited for that. Worth asking the discord channel for better guidence - UA-cam comments get lost 😁
how do i make it so the editable dataview query in 47:21 filters the results with ".where" ? i have been trying to use it but it gives me error everytime. thank you in advance !
If it is a js query then the syntax is different.
I would go to the dataview discord channel 😁
30:20 the date has to be that format (YYYY-MM-DD) or dataview won't be able to use it as a date, so yes in theory you could change it but it fs up dataviews metadata indexing.
True!
I do not have the option to change from array to list in the general settings and I have no idea why. I have all the plugins in the video and checked all the boxes.
Hmm that is new to me.
A restart is all I can think off, otgerwise ask in the plugin repo or discord.
@DannyHatcher very interesting plugin, but I ask myself, doesn´t it conflict with templater plugin (or with all the template files I use with templater plugin)?
It shouldn't, I work with both.
Hello, can you tell me why the settings page in my Obsidian for metadata menu does not have Global settings at top of page -- only Settings and fewer options. Thank you😀
I have not heard of that issue before.
Might be worth asking the developer in the git repo.
Hi, the last section of this video in which you are showing how to make dataview query editable but isn't it tackled by upcoming datacore plugin much well? So should we put so much effort into this when this all gonna replaced?
datacore was meant to be released in February I believe so the timeline on that seems to have been pushed back. It is up to you.
I tried to do have weekly dates in [W]WW-YYYY format but when i configured the date field with no problem I tried to select a week on my first file and then it wouldn't accept the date because it's not a valid date format. But i referenced [W]WW-YYYY and got for example W40-2023 but it wouldn't accept it. Help?
I dont use a week format in a date property so am not sure if there are bugs.
Happy to troubleshoot with you in discord 😁
What an amazing video you made !!! the only thing I stumble with: you're very fast and I'm an old man 😜 69 and not a programmer is tough
Sorry about that.
You can slow the speed down in the UA-cam settings.
I would also recommend pausing 😁
I‘m all fine with your video, I just have to take it in parts and look at it several times 😅
Thank you very much for this video! you are amazing!
In 37:06 Is there a way to add something so the "all" class does not appear like an option? (It's the default class anyway)
I'm just starting to learn about queries.
I am not surr what you mean.
Anything can be added to the defailt class that can be added throught the plugin.
Queries are seporate 😁
Hi Danny, by chance, have you already had the opportunity to test the compatibility of the metadata menu plugin with the new insider version of Obsidian 1.4 which introduces the Proprieties in the frontmatter? Are compatible?
Yes and yes.
Properties ir really an aesthetic thing with a couple added features.
It is a pity that Table View doesn't show Child Fileclasses. For example Author class has People class as parent class. When I list all People, the Authors are not included. Any solution for that?
I dont personally use the table view so didnt notice.
You might be able to attch 2 classes on a file but i would put that as a feature request 😁
Hi there Danny! Thanks for the amazing tutorial - may I ask why your Dataview fields/rows are being highlighted in blue/purple when you hover over them? I wasn't able to replicate this but would love to implement it. Thanks!
I am not sure what you mean. Was it the dataview query or MDM table view? There is an updated version of this video as well by the way.
@@DannyHatcherTech e.g. at 47:40 - as soon as you hover over Dataview fields using your mouse, they're being highlighted.
This is very interesting, and is making me consider switching to O... thank you! But I couldn't figure out what this is even about until I hovered over the links in your written article! How do you expect people to know where they have landed if you only name plugins for an unnamed app? As not an Obsidian user (yet), I'm also curious to know if those who are but didn't know the channel yet could guess before clicking this was for them?
I am not entirley sure I understand tge quesion.
Unnamed app - Obsidian logo in thumbnail + details in description.
Sending Class to "All" Global Class: In the video the name of the new field is entered as "Class" but in my tests this only works if the name of the field matches the "fieldClass" alias. Hence in my case I had not changed the alias and so this technique only worked if the name was "fileClass". Occurs around 16:48
Yes, the alias is what metadat menu checks as well as tags if you have setting turned on.
Sorry if that wasnt clear.
🤯mindblown - for-realllll.........
looked all around with no luck strugling with dataview how do i make a field return only options from instances of pages with a specific field value this is what is got so far and isnt working "dv.pages where type = "Game Genre"" thanks
If you are looking for a js query it is different from the regular syntax.
I would suggest going to the dataview channel in the discord as UA-cam comments will get lost 😁
@@DannyHatcherTech thanks Danny
Why do I need to enable the command for the field in order to have the editable dataview? I did it without the command and it still works.
Interesting, I followed the developers instructions for that. 🤷♂️
Amazing video Danny!
and if turn on the command for the field, it seems no matter which different icon you choose, it doesn't show.
Hey Danny! Thanks a lot for sharing this :) What would you say would be the advantages to this compared with the DB Folder plugin? Espesially for managing academic articles etc. Thanks!

Ah - Very useful! Thanks a lot :) @@DannyHatcherTech
Is the “await” and “async” stuff in the dataviewjs block necessary? Mine works without it and I’m curious what difference it makes. Any insight into these specific parts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Great video. Looking forward to playing with this plugin. One minor correction; pedagogy is not "learning for children".
noun: pedagogy; plural noun: pedagogies
the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept.
"the relationship between applied linguistics and language pedagogy"
Thanks.
My understanding when comparing pedagogy to andragogy is with the age of the person.
Will take a look into it for my POP 😁

Hey Danny, does this plugin works with the mobile Version (IOS)? When I try to use this plugin on my phone, it doesn't show the blue Icon on each note... maybe you can help :)
I am not sure, I havent tried. Sorry
@@DannyHatcherTech thanks you for responding! I find out on my own. It's actually not really useable: the plugin changes some other metadata in a strange way so I will just keep it activated on my desktop. I am. watching all of your vids - really enjoy your explanations! Also good to improve my English :D
That's a very good video. I think, editable Dataview table not necessary for basic users because it's just save one click for you. In normal SQL like Dataview table, if you have a file-link column, you can still change the metadata values.
Dataview + MetadataMenu = Datacore plugin
the dataviewjs part for the topics doesnt work for me, ive tried replicating everything u did. Still doesnt display any Topics when i try and update the field
Solution: The folder string has to have single quotes AND double quotes around it like this: '"path"'... tbf i dont know anything bout java so its quite easy to miss
@@hahaxolotl yes. This is something I, and many people miss with dataview js.
In recent videos I have empahsized it more. Glad you figured it out. 😁
I'm new to obsidian. Can someone please explain the benefits of metadata
Metadata is just added information you can put on a file to help with searching
Regarding "Accept A Link": Any thoughts on what is required with a non js dataview query.
I tried variations on the following
>```dataview
>LIST
>From "Author"
```
But I couldn't find a combination that didn't produce an error message.
I am not sure what you mean by accept a link...
@@DannyHatcherTech apologies for being unclear. “Accept A Link” is the field type.
@@strategist5000 ah I see.
I am not familiar with js dataview much but I think there is some information in the help doc for the field type referencing.
@@DannyHatcherTech Apologies, I'm still not being clear. My question is that you used dataviewjs to filter the list of suitable candidates when selecting the author from the author folder. But what if you didn't use js, what about writing a dataview query instead? Is it possible to write a dataview query as the filter. If so, why wouldn't a straightforward LIST FROM folder produce the correct listing? Perhaps this a question best sent to the developer but you've obviously put a lot of time and energy into understanding this plugin and I thought you might have some insights from your experience.
Thanks
@@strategist5000 ah, you are referring to the filter list. That is done with js because that lets the plugin query the vault.
Normal dataview only works in code blocks.
I think anyway.
Thanks for this video. I was trying to follow it and got to 1:14 but couldn't tell what you did there. You created a page so you could toggle the menu then you lost me. I guess I don't have to do anything there?
I created a file then named it (that is the cut I did in the edit)
This is excellent. Its a bit complicated but with a bit of patience people will understand it eventually.
I do however think that for the table view, i think they should improve it so that it displays the table using the same format as the table display in the "Database Folder" or "Project" plugins. The Dataview format works but does not look pretty :)
Why you need call the folder Class, is there anybug i mean if i called my Class Folder z_menuData dosnt work, which is the function dv.pages('"photos"').map(p => p.file.name) for looking .JPG files
@@DannyHatcherTech Fair enough! Even highlighting a few of your favorite things you can do with it off the bat would at least give me an idea of what I'm getting into. To be clear I do think this is a general issue with info about Obsidian plugins, nothing personal! These kinds of plugins make my head spin. Sorry 😂
Totally understandable, nothing to be sorry about. They are not for everyone 😁
Very interesting topic, but explained so quickly as mentioned in other videos it is absolutely useless, unless you are a native English speaker. I can't follow you even with active subtitles in my language. I understand that the plugin has considerable potential, that it is not easy to use and that you still want to explain as much as possible, but this is disarming. Making two videos, one simpler and one more complex, speaking slower in my opinion would be the best thing.
Other videos on the channel show use cases, this is meant as reference video.
I feel uncomfortable talking this slow already, how does the .75 speed work for you?
