He used a voice box. That was his trademark. Back in 87' you couldn't go anywhere without hearing this song. R.I.P. Roger.
The Zapp Band was rocking it back in the day. 😍
They played this at every junior high/high school dance we had back in the late 80s!
Yeah, Computer Love.
How did he die
Later in music a lot of hip hop groups called on Roger Troutman to perform on their records with his Talk Box. R.I.P. Mr. Troutman. A true legend.
Alright now 🥰 y’all need to listen to Computer Love and More Bounce to the Ounce by Zapp and Roger
Definitely
These were the two other songs I was going to recommend as well 🤣
Facts
More bounce is the car show banger!!
YAS!!!
Before T-Pain and Future there was Roger Troutman. This man has influenced a ton of great music over the past few decades. The undisputed master of the Talk Box.
He's an absolute legend but let me make the distinction that Future & T Pain don't use Talkboxes, it's Autotune made famous by Cher of all people haha. Computer Love is my all time fave, man I wish I could have seen Roger play live.
Side note, I bought a talkbox a few months ago and honestly it's the hardest thing to make sound good in terms of hearing the words and not just the tones. Roger is truly the master.
Before Roger Troutman there was Stevie Wonder.
And before Cher 🙂
@@youaintasbadasyouthink You're absolutely right. Thanks for the clarification about the talkbox and autotune. I had forgotten about Cher's song "Believe" too, lol. Am I correct that it's the talkbox that Teddy Riley uses? I've seen footage of him on stage with the tube in his mouth.
@@crich95 I forgot about Stevie.
This wasn't actually Zapp. This was Roger Troutman by himself with Shirley Murdoch on background vocals. You should react to her. Now she sang GROWN FOLK music. Bad jam right here.
Your comment triggered Grand Funk Railroad. Have they reacted to them??? 😳
Roger was the group and zapp was the singer
@@stevieruiz6476 Roger Troutman was the singer Zapp was the group. This song was from his solo album Unlimited.
Luther Vandross ft Cheryl Lynn “ If This World Was Mine” “And A House Not A Home”
"A House is not a Home" is a classic! Please react to this one.
Love luther vandross. "Buy me a rose" is a song i love
YES!
Y'all cookin' with Crisco now!!! Zapp was the sh!t back in the day. You should listen to 'Computer Love'. Charlie Wilson from The Gap Band is on that song, too.
Yep hotter than fish grease 😊
Love, love, LOVE "Computer Love"!
Hotter than a pressing comb, chile!
Roger was very impactful with this style and went on to do the hook for California Love with Dr. Dre & 2Pac and did other features as well. He was killed by his brother Larry who was also a member of the group, Zapp and then committed suicide after murdering him. Always love Zapp & Roger music.
WESTSIDE.PIFF, how tragic!😥
No way!!!
That was a tragic, shocking event, broke my heart.
I had the pleasure of seeing Roger and Zap I can say is it was stupid crazy they turned it out for real!
I'm saying you guys should treat yourself by listening to More Bounce to the Ounce you won't regret it trust me.
I believe the brother who shot him was actually ZAPP’s manager. And there was an alternation because Roger was about to fire the brother or something? That’s what I heard in Unsung.
One of my favorite songs ever
Me too! Been thinking of this song so much lately. This is so great.
This is my favorite song of all-time!!! #1fan Love me some Roger!! ❤
Alright Twinz come on with it !!!! Yall jammin tonight. Bring back that good old school !!!!!!
Now you have to do Computer Love
Emotions. Deep classic
Yes!!
It's called a Talk Box. There are videos that show him with a tube in his mouth as he sings. If that is the greatest hits CD, make sure you listen to "More bounce to the ounce". You will hear Roger and Zapp playing at most cookouts , barbeque. Enjoy☺️
I’d love for them to react to More Bounce to the Ounce! It’s my favorite from Zapp.
Love this song so much!!
I was so excited it was on Love & Basketball’s soundtrack.
Love the movie and soundtrack!!
That slow dance scene still gives me chills lol.
Yesss @@CherieKing!! Now I gotta go watch the movie!!🥰
Yessss @@fancyfacekarren!! One of my favs!!
This was a JAM!!
Did y'all do their biggest hit "Computer Love"?
More Bounce to the Ounce was the biggest 😍😍
Now that’s a classic!!! Yes please do Computer Love, which Neo basically redid as “I only want you to love”
Didnt they use one in SELENA
One of the greatest songs ever made!
"More bounce to the ounce" was their biggest HIT!!
It's their signature piece!
It put them on the map.
It really was bumping back in the day... and now
1:30 It’s called a TalkBox. It's hard to explain how it works in words so just look it up, pretty damn cool how it's used
This is a history lesson right here guys! My hometown Dayton, OH in the house! When you get time, please research the impact Zapp & Roger had on the music industry, from Funk to R & B to Hip-Hop. They're legends! R.I.P. to the Troutman brothers! 🎵🎶
BIG UP!!!
They are pioneers. They made dance floors and skating rinks pop.
I lived there back in the day of The Ohio Players, Lakeside and Slave. Those were the days
Aren't they from Trotwood?
@@summerbreeze553 Haven't lived in Trotwood for years. I remember Roger bein from Hamilton. I think some of the other members were from Dayton.
This is still a bop‼️ I remember this song on Love & Basketball...they also did another hit called "Computer Love". Make sure yall check that song out❣
Back in the day this was some slow groovin, straight up baby making music. They were too smooth. Also another song from another artist. Rose Royce. I wanna get next to you. Think you guys might like that one also. Thanks for sharing your time with all of us. Great energy!
Facts. Look at my post on main screen.
When this song came on I always skated with a few gals as I was in the top of the class per skaters n id slip through a group of girls on one foot zig zagging then turn around backwards n grab their hands n skate backwards facing them. I could literally see them melt lol 😆 its funny to sit back n remember it. They would fight over me lmao
Awwwww yeah.
"More Bounce to the Ounce." "Dance Floor." "I Can Make You Dance." "Heartbreaker." "Be Alright." "Computer Love." Have fun, fam.
Can I add Emotions. Deep classic.
Do Wah Ditty
@@Tes7000 Fo' sho'!
Yes
Heartbreaker was my favorite
wow, this takes me back to some great "Old School"...so happy you two enjoy this amazing song. BTW, Roger (Troutman) passed away (was murdered by his brother) in 1999. The sound is a TALKBOX used by singers. Thank you gentlemen so much for making your video's and sharing!
Heard It Through the Grapevine by Zapp... EPIC
I completely agree. Love his version
Yessssss!!!
"IS THAT AUTOTUNE???"🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That, Young Thundercats, is a Talkbox! The sound from his synthesizer is pushed thru a plastic tube held in his mouth blending the sound with his voice and projecting it thru his mic. Autotune wasnt even on the drawing board at the time🤔 Great reaction video, Fellas! Always proud to know that some of our kids appreciate the "Ol' School"😎💯
Brings me back to the 92-95 cruising days when my husband was in his low rider car club. We used to listen to this all the time!
Not only does this remind me of junior high, but it also reminds me of the high school dance scene in "Love & Basketball!" One of my top 10 fave movies!!
Best sound track EVER!!
Ahhh memories. Great timeless song.
Please react to USA For Africa - We Are The World
Good song I been trying to request as well
more Roger please. 'I can make you dance if you want me to'
Guys- their song “Dance Floor” is a must- they also have a version of “Heard it through the grapevine.” Both are musts! Trust me- huge hits!! 👍✌️
4REAL!!!!😍
Dance Floor is my JAM!!
Computer love, Doo wah ditty, more bounce to the ounce
Can I add Emotions. Deep classic
@@tnaccountability7455 Yeah, 'Bounce to the ounce' too.
This was my request. Yes thank you young men.
This was my Jam growing up slaying the skating rink slipping between a group of gals on one foot then spin around n grav their hands n skate backwards. I was a mfkn pimp in those days lol.
This song was the one you wanted to come on if you had a crush on a lil cutie
Lol...true!
The BEST skating song!
I remember DANCING SLOW to this SONG at the NIGHT CLUBS or home ...summer time backyard parties
BIG HIT BACK IN THE DAY...👏👏👏👍🇺🇸
You've heard part of this band before!!! Roger was featured in California Love by Tupac
3:27 That exact line gives me chills everytime I hear it. It’s such an amazing line and even the way he sings it is just phenomenal. Best verse in the whole song
Zapp & Roger are underappreciated, imo. You can hear their influence in so many current artist's music.
Oh my gosh, thank you for reacting to this!!!! I’ve been waiting so long for someone to do this song! It’s on my playlist, one of my favs ❤️
Omg!!!!! This song brings back so many memories!! Rip Jessica, I’ll never forget you, or us being silly af, jamming to this classic 💜😢
I think I still have this song on a mixtape in a box somewhere in my basement.?Truly one of the best old school jams!! I love that you chose this song. Give a listen to Tender Love by Force M.D’s.❤️
Yes indeed! Force MD is the Bomb!
💯
One of my faves and one of the few CDs I have that I somehow didn’t lose. Now u must do “Computer Love” and “More Bounce to the Ounce”.
This is my blood family 💯🙏🏽 R.I.P Unc. Roger, Larry, terry or “zapp”, is his nickname, are my uncles and Lester, the drummer, is my grandpa.
Crazy how people still love their music till this day
I dunno about crazy because Zapp was and is one of if not my favorite group of all time across all genres... More Bounce to the Ounce still makes me feel a certain kinda way all these years later.
I was a big big fan of Zapp back in the day & still groove to their music today! Rip to your Uncles gone too soon, but never forgotten! Peace & Love to your family ❤️🎵
I was still at Wright State in Dayton when I heard news of the brothers death. It was shocking.

Ya'll got to do "Happy" by Surface
Yesssssssss, one of my faves!
Exactly
That was my jam! I still have my cassette for sentimental reasons
The female singing on the song @4:31 is Shirley Murdock. She had some 80's hits ("As We Lay", feat. on Zapp & Roger's "Computer Love", etc.). She's always the "mama" in gospel plays now.
Love your reaction videos! I’ve been watching for over a year and am thrilled with your successes. Thank you & God bless.
You’ll like Computer Love, Radio, More Bounce to the Ounce
Another great solo artist, Shirley Murdock, sang with this group. She is a powerhouse of a singer. Check out her songs: “Husband” and “As We Lay”
Can't forget Go On Without You.
Zapp & Roger - Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)
Yesss!
This is my jam!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
"is that autotune?" Love that part! He crafted and perfected the Talk Box. Roger Troutman is one of my favs RIP!
Thisssss song is a masterpiece! Glad you youngins reviewed this slow vibe 🤲🏽
this song used to me get some back in the day. Damn im old!
Bring me to the memories of the movie Mence ll Society, playing Zapp song Computer Love
Zapp&Rogers More Bounce To The Ounce REQUEST!! I’m not asking, IM TELLING YOU!!! Bcuz if u do this SONG, then it’s only RITE to do the Mega-PLATINUM HIT. Have it or else 😅 seriously, I’m serious. 😠 Peace&Blessings
This song had every girl at the school dance wanting somebody to ask them to dance. No auto tune back then. This is one of the greatest bands during this era. Brings back sooo many great memories. #CLASSIC
They from the 80’s please play more from them heartbreaker is a great one or more bounce to the ounce
Ayo AYo this one's a classic yo that romantic vibe. I was born in 1990 and growing up listening to all the classics so it's always nostalgic hearing a song you haven't heard in a long time
Alot of babies were made with this song bros, Alot. This song was OFF the charts. Yall dont where you just went.✌🏾
Took a picture with him and my best friend after his concert in San Diego in 1986. He was a cool cat, loved his music, and he was incredibly down to Earth. Came out after the concert to stand, talk, sign autographs and take pictures. I paid $20 bucks for that pic with him, which was quite a lot of money in 1986. His songs were everywhere. Tupac used him on an album. Computer Love was his greatest hit, or I Heard it Through the Grapevine. I was in shock when I heard when and how he was murdered. Very untimely death. By 1995 he was considered an Ol' G. LOL That voice box had him sick a lot from bronchitis types of diseases. Not a lot of people used that machine.
Aren’t y’all glad all this good music is still accessible for you to enjoy? Even though it’s several decades old, it’s still smooth enough to jam to. You can dance, exercise, or just chill to this and many other oldies but goodies. Thank you You Tube. 🙂
Roger was a master. Taken to soon. Saw him live in 1985 in Huntsville, AL. The show was AMAZING.
One of the many great funk groups from Dayton, Ohio. He had many great songs, roller rink jams
You're just scratching the surface...Can't wait to see your reaction to their other collaborations. Roger used a synthesizer (mouth piece) if I'm not mistaken. They were ahead of their time and blew us away with the new technology...back then.
This was always playing in the background at parties in cars wherever people gathered in the mid 80's.✨😁👍✨
Computer Love by Zapp/Roger. The voice box hooked to a keyboard is how they create the sound. You sing by playing the notes and kind of going through the motion of singing but not really making any noise (the keyboard supplies that). You have to use a little bit on consonants. Peter Frampton used a voice box and guitar, most notably on his song "Do You Feel Like We Do" if you want to check out a rocker doing it, slightly before Zapp and Roger.
Can’t believe you hadn’t heard this on the movie “Love and Basketball!”
Finally! Yes!! I asked for this a while back! "Computer Love" and "More Bounce to the Ounce" are also classics! I was born in early 80's and I still love them! The older people would play this and I fell in love with their sound! I have their CD! He used a talk box and it's like this tube thing you stick in your mouth!
YESSSSSS now we're talking... Grew up on them ❤️❤️💕💕
I know that's right!
This jam was a necessity when tryin to holla at yo shawty!!!!!
Pulling up in your Acura Legend 😂
This song will never get old ❤️
He was performing at the front row in Cleveland. This was a concert Hall that was in a round space. The stage was round and rotated. When he got to this song he told everybody to come to the stage. It was so many people that the stage stopped...lol
Always liked this song back in the day. Still a great song. Thanks for sharing yall. Have a great day. God bless yall and family. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🌷🌻🙂💯⭐
It's awesome to see young men appreciating Roger Troutman. May he rest in eternal peace. Shout out from Dallas TX.
Oh now you’re just jammin!!
This was the jam at the high school dances in the late 80s/90s. Great slow dancing song
Troutman sound labs on Salem Ave, Dayton, OH. Hometown love from Vegas! Zapp and Roger, LEGENDARY
Roger and his brothers were so talented. They built homes too. The Troutman's. Roger = GOAT! Zapp is still performing.
This was played at weddings. This song is my all time fave from Roger ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Slow and Easy", an underrated song by the group featuring Shirley Murdock. Definitely "baby making music" ! 😉
The late great Roger Troutman! Man I loved this song! It always reminded of a special lady who I loved very much back then. Unfortunately things didn't work out for us, but such is life. It was a tragedy what happened to Roger. He was gunned down in his recording studio by his own brother Larry. Then later Larry took his own life in his car. Sad situation.
This was sort of a voice effects device that Roger Troutman used quite a bit with his vocals. It basically turned his voice into an instrument. If you watch performances Roger had a tube running into the corner of his mouth for these types of vocals. This was probably one of 4 of Zapp's/Roger's best hits. Check out "Computer Love", "Doo Wah Ditty", "More Bounce to the Ounce" or "I Can Make You Dance".
I loooooove this song!!! Such. An underrated song!
The Zapp Band was it back in the day. Awe miss those days. That era was fun with the best singers and groups. Thanks guys. 😍😘🎈
I have always loved this song!
Never heard of this jam, but it's pretty smooth 👏
You must be very young
Or younger....then me
@@doratiscareno5856 I'm kind of in the middle, I suppose. It's quite possible I heard this song back in the day but I don't remember it 🤷♀️
This song was playing on the radio on the way to the chapel where my husband and I got married. ❤
Williams Kings! Welcome to MY block! I'm from Dayton, OH, the Land of Funk and home of Roger Troutman and Zapp! Listen to More Bounce to the Ounce, and I dare Williams King Tim to stay seated in that chair! Thank you for another great reaction 👍🏽💖
Such a classic R&B song! I still play this today! It’s a talk box, not auto tune. I can’t fully explain the difference but their definitely is one. I think with the talk box the sound is fed into the singer’s mouth from an attached instrument. Roger Troutman is a master of its use in songs. There is a TVOne Unsung episode about Roger Troutman that is worth watching.
Check out their hit songs Computer Love and More Ounce To The Bounce.
Takes me back to my Junior High school dances in the gym. Darn I am old!
OMG I still love this song so much. Thanks for doing this one! :)
I spent many a Saturday night at the roller rink skating the "couple's skate" to this song!!
Yaaaaaas!!!! Zapp and Roger. Everything they did was tha' BOMB! I can't wait for y'all to listen to more of their repertoire! 🙌🏾🔥
Yo, Tim and Fred, Roger & Zapp has got so many banging songs that you've got to react to on your channel.
"Computer Love"**
"More Bounce to the Ounce"**
"Be Alright"**
"Chocolate City"**
"So Ruff, So Tuff"
"Dance Floor"
BTW, All of these songs were samples so much over the years that you might definitely recognize some of the tunes in something you've heard (especially "More Bounce to the Ounce" which was sampled in over 309 songs: including "You Gots To Chill" by EPMD (1988), and "Mount Kushmore" feat. Snoop Dogg, Redman, and B-Real (2017)).
Ah the memories this song brings back of my 9th grade dance. I love it ❤️
I am so happy you all have discovered Roger Troutman and ⚡️Zapp⚡️! I hold them in really high esteem, about a step down from Prince who is like the ultimate for me. But up there with the Beatles and Queen. Zapp created some great funk music and roller skating jams but they would have these exquisitely melodic ballads and they had a distinctive sound using the talk box effect. Great songwriting. They just always bought their A game and never disappointed. Shirley Murdock’s gorgeous vocals were a perfect fit with their music.
Please also react to-
More bounce to the ounce
Computer love
I can make you dance
Dance floor
Doo Wah Ditty
Also-
As we lay (Shirley Murdoch)
One of my favorite slow jams EVER.
CLASSIC❤❤❤ " My mind gets blind at times I can't see anyone but you. Those other girls don't matter no they can't spoil my view" 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Love this song I grew to appreciate this music when Love and basketball came out I was a kid learning throwbacks
😢🙏🏽What a TRAGIC end 🙌🏽🙏🏽Gone but never forgotten. Thank you two for reacting to them. RIP brothers 🙏🏽🙌🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽
Classic and one of my top 5 favorite songs!💗💗💗💗💗💗
One of my favorite old school groups. They got tons of hits in their catalog. You should also check out More Bounce to the Ounce, Dance Floor, Computer Love, Slow & Easy, So Ruff, So Tuff, and Doo Wa Ditty.
Many years before Auto-Tune, Prince wasn't even a Duke yet...... Roger was doin it right with a perfect production and performance.
This was THE JAM in the clubs for the longest!!! Teen night on Sunday nights ...
I wanna go back to the good old days of my youth!! We had the BEST music!!!
