He is the best organist I have come across in the world of jazz! Really felt so sad when he left us! I wished he had stayed that slim and maybe he would have still been with us...
This is when he was young but he already consumed what others older generation took them so many years of their life. With all do credit to older keyboard players Joey gave us the best of all. But sad he left this world so soon but his legacy livs forever. God bless his soul in heaven may be they need a great pipe organist out there. Joey will do that happily in heaven.
I was fortunate enough to meet Joey a couple of times. Was and still is a big influence to me in playing the B-3. Thank you Joey for everything you gave us.
love Byron Landham🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏I wonder, if that was kinda opener set for the John McLaughlin Trio back then, because the drumset looks very much like Dennis Chambers setup for that band?
A true prodigy and successor to the great organists of the baby boomer era, he's like the second coming of Groove Holmes, Jack McDuff and he literally knocked on the door to that elite club, pushed it open and walked in to introduce himself and announce his arrival as a high school kid and he's the true heir of all that greatness and outside of the best classical organists alive today, i don't know of anyone today who is on par with this virtuoso organist in the jazz idiome, please inform me if i missed someone who needed mention folks, thanks!
Whoa whoa slow it down a touch excitement of Lower Manhattan getting to Joey he playing faster than the drummer! Jimmy Smith played like his soul oozing out his fingertips. So did Joey.
He played with "Wookie" a lot in those early days & on the early albums. Paul Bollenback missing here on guitar. But what a Power Duo here! Yes, my opinion also, Joey was the best... Edit: had misspelled Bollenback.
It is amazing how so many talented people kill themselves over drugs, alcohol, obesity, or anorectic lifestyles. I think his eating habits were the cause of his death at such a young age.😟
Probably the only one who could outmatch my dad on the B3. Pop played with greats like Robbie Robertson, Ronnie Hawkins, has his own bands, and carried that Hammond to gigs, along with the Leslie cabinets. Crazy. Fell asleep to the sound of his band practices. Joey D sure could play those keys man. Damn.
Wow. Awesome talent but he was half the size. I don't know what his health issues were but that massive weight gain certainly led to his untimely death.
So great to see this young and handsome Joey D. He was smokin until the end. We miss you Joey - but your music lives on !!!🎹🎼
We miss you??? I thought, he is still alive....
@@klaus7174 sadly he's not.
The best jazz organist who ever lived. I feel privileged to have seen him at the NSJ. RIP legend.
Indeed. Nobody comes close.
I met him when he was 17 playing in Buffalo, NY. Best ever. He left us way to early. Sad!

All us musicians seem to develop addictions and problems
@@badass.bob1 we feel too much sometimes and need that little "therapy"
Joey and Byron-tight as! Beautiful music, fabulous players
He brought it back!

Era troppo avanti per noi comuni mortali. È ritornato sul suo pianeta
Man he sounds like he did in his older years!
Crazy how some people just have it from very young!
Whatever age and whatever size Joey still will be to me the best. Point.
fact!!
I agree.
Had he kept this weight he might still be with us...
Wow! Thanks for sharing this footage. Keep 'em comin'!
Joey always had a great time playing -- and I always have a great time listening. Amazing video!
Such a monstrous player! RIP Joey!❤️
He was magnificent!!!
Forever in my Heart ,i love you Joey ❤️
So great even at this young age. He & Wookie were a great musical team.
This man inspired me to listen to jazz... We miss you Joey

So great to see him play so magnificently at such a young age. Joey, my idol. RIP
I was fortunate enough to meet Joey a couple of times. Was and still is a big influence to me in playing the B-3. Thank you Joey for everything you gave us.
Will be greatly missed! You left us so much great music!
I have played drums with the great organist Rhoda Scott in 1992 , i love Joey ! it was a genius ! rip my brother +
I miss you Joey! Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for sharing it! I am not sure how old Joey was, but he sounded as if he had been playing for hundreds of years…
I saw Joey in Toronto around the same time as this. Probably a year or 2 after. Would have been around 89/90. I was 16 or 17. He blew me away.
I watched him play this in his house, & then watched Jimmy Smith videos.
How lucky am I?
If one closes their eyes, Jimmy Smith shines through!
@PepperWilliams...him and also Jimmy McGriff.
What a legend! Joey is always an inspiration. R.I.P.
This is truly awesome!
Thanks so much for posting!
Joey D will always be the legend!
Killin' Joey. RIP Maestro
Great energy, RIP Joey..
Wow! This made my day. I love that you are keeping posting them clip! Kindest regard from Scandinavia ❤
Oh my, so great!!!
man.... I miss you!!!!!!!!!!!!
yooo - Lil B
Wooo Byron! These two are a perfect musical match.
Joey was a shadow of his future self in this video.
Amazing! So melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic.
Such a class act, RIP!!
Love listening to his playing!
How phenomenal, and how sad he piled on the pounds. He's gonna live forever through his music...
No doubt Wow now more special my man Joey!)!)!)!)
What a wonderful Hammond B3 keyboards player!!
Burned 🔥 that stage Down Joey D FOREVER
Wow, Joey the great jazz organist!!
My whole body goosebumps.
super super! establishment shiny sound!
I saw his trio open for Steely Dan. I've been a fan ever since. I'm so sad he's gone.
Jazz opening for rock...that's odd?
@@rickbarnes7745Steely Dan aren’t really rock though. One of the most Jazz influenced of bands.
Greatest organist of his generation
Agreed! He learned everything from my #1 Organist of all time...Jimmy Smith.
Fantastic!
The best!!!!!

2:35 He plays two bass lines at once?) Joe - is my favourite jazz organ player!
Nice

you are right on target with your statement.

🐐💙
Go ahead and turn the organ up to an audible volume pls thx.
I saw him in concert. I didn’t know he was so hansom when he was younger and not so heavy.
Who cares that he was heavy. He could play better than almost anyone on God's green earth.
@@garys8990 I admire his playing, He died 08/25/22 of a heart attack 51 years old, You don't his weight had anything to do with it?
Does he do Heartbeat, It's a Lovebeat?
What year is this?
what can I say, gifted and unfortunately left us much too soon.....
My god, how slim he was back then...
LOOX like young Ron Levy - "Chicken Fried Snake" ...."Chill-out" ....BB s protege
Why did he study Jazz in the jears after this Video....
And a very young Wookie!
So what happened to his health???
Major chops
De Francesco delgado - no me lo puedo creer. Pero igual de bestia en el órgano como siempre
Whoa whoa slow it down a touch excitement of Lower Manhattan getting to Joey he playing faster than the drummer! Jimmy Smith played like his soul oozing out his fingertips. So did Joey.
Grande talento. Peccato...!
