Joslyn is a gal after my own heart about respecting and appreciating people who are not "lazy in their learning." It brings me joy both to continue learning and see people in the world who actively seek out knowledge, skills and abilities. Big thumbs up to you guys!

What was said about curiosity is SPOT ON. Everything that came out of that man's mouth, from criticisms of late-stage capitalism to statements about meritocracy, could've very well come out of my own brain. Seriously, this whole ADHD situation really fucks with me... The "symptoms" of ADHD are SO similar to the symptoms for bi-polar disorder AND giftedness... especially for women, apparently, because we're socialized to be overachievers anyways, so mental health conditions often go undetected. Like WTF does "oversensitivity" mean?! The planet is literally being trashed in the name of geopolitics of energy and power, inequality is on the rise, so are far-right movements... and I'M the one who's oversensitive?! I'M the one who has a "mental breakdown"!?
The problem is once you open up that box of curiosity, knowledge ensues, and while knowledge has a calming effect most times, because knowledge is comforting, the more you know, the less anxious you get about basic things like taking the bus... Knowing the schedule means you're not stressing out about being late every morning, it allows you to plan... but at some higher level, knowing more about the world also means you know more about the stuff you CAN'T predict and change, and that's a whole new level of existential anxiety that isn't PATHOLOGICAL, but entirely NORMAL when you're a human being with empathy and don't wear rose-colored glasses. We've NEVER been so informed, we are BOMBARDED with data everyday, we're constantly solicited... like I don't want to deny that certain mental health issues exist, and can be treated effectively, but on some level, there's also this ambient tone of "take a pill and you'll be normal" that really skirts the very real psycho-social underlying factors that often cause kids and adults to be "overly sensitive" or "distracted" or "unable to focus"... I read those papers sometimes and I'm like... it says one of the symptoms is inability to focus, and another is difficulty sleeping... well anyone who has had difficulty sleeping is gonna also have a hard time concentrating and focusing the next day, right?!
This epidemic of millennials who get diagnosed with ADHD, I'm like... is it ADHD, or is it just the general level of anxiety felt by this generation that cripples us collectively?! ARE WE EVEN CRIPPLED, or are we just... painfully aware?! Whenever I speak to self-help specialists, be it psychologists or mental health advocate, it always comes back to pragmatic ways to "manage" myself better... am I the problem, or my brain chemistry is the problem. Am I the only one that thinks that what we REALLY need to manage better is our societies?!? I DON'T WANT more cognitive dissonance, or to develop methods to "compartmentalize" how I feel about this world... I'm a sociologist, it's what I do!! If psychology has only one answer for me, "stop reading the news if it stresses you out so much", which is the Golden Standard it seems...... well fuck psychology. Sorry, but I don't wanna numb myself with drugs so I can be jaded to this fucked up world, just so I can be a "more productive member of society" according to some profit-based value system... Because in the end, that's the only disruption it brings to my life, other than this underlying sense of collective doom... I make less money. I'm picky about the jobs I'm willing to take. I'm just NOT willing to sacrifice my principles for money... although less financial stress would be nice, I just can't do it. And if that makes me "abnormal", then so fucking be it!!

I take exception to the statement about the boomers and the planet. You people live in a dream world. People need stability with their career. i have worked hard for 33 years at the same job. I've loved it. Nobody wants to put in the hours and time.
