- I had my car tuned by the infamous Jason Carberry utilizing his Speed Density ROM, the CarberryROM. The car is running a couple aftermarket goodies, but engine is totally stock at this point, just bolt-ons.

Currently running 19psi on 93, so the power isn't insane, but it's healthy enough for a daily driver. :) - Авто та транспорт
so freaking awesome, i wish i could afford one
The transmission had 100k miles when I purchased it, and 60k of those miles had an 18g in front of it. It was launched at the drag strip, and raced at Auto X for 3 years before it was pulled in favor of a 6 speed.
It is still going strong for the current owner of the car and has absolutely no issues. :)
Never seen your old car Travis that's sick - 14rex
nice car man! you should bring it out to the car show/dyno day at force engineering in plainwell this saturday
Still going strong bud, thousands of miles later. :) I sold the car shortly after this to a friend, and he switched out the block off plate to a VTA blow off valve though.
I know the vast majority of people hate seeing no pressure relief, but it was done because my stock BPV was leaking at 18+ psi and I didn't have a BOV laying around.
What a beast!
With this setup, I had full boost at 3300RPM. That's extremely low, but I had everything geared towards boost threshold instead of top end scoot.

I really loved this setup as a whole. I never had it dyno'd, but it was an easy 300whp car that hit early, and held great up top. This was a fantastic turbo for the two liter!
With the UEL Header I had, spool was down a bit but it helped up top. With a EL you should be able to maintain your boost point compared to stock manifolds, but also pick up the top end power. The FMIC shouldn't hurt too bad, the only place you'd notice a difference is once you're in the boost threshold, the turbo lag (actual lag, not what people refer to it as) will be more compared to a TMIC. I don't think your butt dyno would be able to pick up on that extended lag though. Good luck!
WOW! I cant believe this stock ej20 is taking all this no Blow off valve and running anti-lag. Applause for you my man. I hope your not running too much HP
Recently flashed CarBerryRom 4.2 on my Bugeye. Haven’t made the switch to speed density yet still running MAF based but what Chris has done with the CarBerryRom is absolutely phenomenal. There are a lot of us that are forever in his debt for his hard work and persistence.
Impreza WRX Chris, or do you mean Jason?
Travis T Travis T your right...Jason. The work that he’s done for the community is unbelievable. I’ve been studying the “In’s & Out’s” of OpenSource tuning for roughly a year. I stumbled upon his (Jason’s) 16 Bit Speed Density Log on NASIOC and that led to his write up on RomRaider by mere accident. I would’ve loved to have been a part of the “Testing” crew when he was working out any bugs in the Rom. There are so many guys that are associated with the CarBerryRom as far as the testing. I haven’t came across ANYONE of those guys that didn’t genuinely want to help others learn. You don’t see that type of commitment and sharing of knowledge anywhere that doesn’t cost a arm and a leg.
Travis T do you have instagram or any avenue where I can PM you?
Impreza WRX @travis_tickler :)
Travis T okay 👌🏻
This is my car!!!!!
Yes sir, this is definitely now your car. :)
When are you going to get it back on the road?
I think I've seen this car lol. It sounds good.
Right on, Only thing that'll be different is an EL Header (invidia) and a FMIC. Crossing my fingers for full boost around 3,800.
I really like this settup, I have a 2009 wagon and like everything you've done with it, I am however a little un certain about driving ewg hood dump in the rain, any comment? I'm amazed that this is a daily settup for two years strong, do you have a build thread I can subscribe to on NASIOC or? I'd like to see your tune and graphs because I'm interested in a similar setup, maybe just changing to gt30 and FMIC.
Sorry man, but I didn't have a build thread. I knew what I wanted this car to have, bought all the parts and installed everything in a weekend and didn't document a bit of it.
The through hood dump was a bit extreme for a daily driver, but the nice thing about EWG's is that they only ever open if you hit your boost target, so for 95% of the time it's shut and not annoying. I made myself a small acrylic plug and inserted it in the dump tube when I knew it was going to rain and then removed it while driving and that kept all excess water out.
With your 2.5, I'd suggest a 30r, a good TMIC (Process West), ID1k's and e85. That car would be a little rocket ship.
You may very well have seen this car around. It's my daily driver and is around the Grand Rapids area every day.
Thanks for the compliment, I agree that it sounds pretty damn good. Unfortunately the Hero2 doesn't do the sound it produces any justice.. It's much better in person. :)
holy compressor surge
+james martin ewg
Absolutely perfect. Gotta ask, how many miles, and where abouts in Michigan are you?
The car had around 83k when I sold it. The current owner still daily drives it and is at 90k miles.
I'm from Grand Rapids. :)
Amazing mileage for that year. Glad it gets driven though! I take it you drive the BRZ now?
Awesome. I'm from the Lapeer/CMU.
Yeah, BRZ now. It's certainly quite a bit slower than the WRX, but in my opinion the BRZ is better in almost every way. =)
Can never go wrong with front engine, RWD. I'll be looking forward to anything you decide to do with that!
I had 5000 in to the car, including the purchase of the car, but don't expect yourself to be able to get a deal as good as that one unfortunately. :)
It was and still is dead reliable. Never had an issue, and the current owner still daily drives it (it is his only vehicle, so it has to be reliable).
About to do the same setup!!! What size exhaust housing are you running? Mine is a .86 and I'm wondering if spool is gonna be around the same as yours, just lmk. Great build man!
How many miles put on that 04 trans? Did it hold up well to the larger turbo
I'm planning on picking up a bugeye wagon here soon. I want a similar setup. How much did you have into this car, and how reliable was it?
You're looking in the wrong spots then my friend! The more northern you travel, the more Subaru daily drivers you'll find.
Performance Subaru's though, those are still relatively rare.
Your motorcycle pops because it's over-fueled.
This pops because of Anti-Lag, a purposeful feature that is turned on and off via a user controlled switch. :)
very nice set up man...where in michigan are you located if you dont mind me asking, im in midland.
What boost tube are you referring to? The external wastegate dump tube? The inlet? I don't understand your terminology.
EMS is OBDII, factory ECU. Read the description if you want to know about the tune.
Everyone else, READ THE DESCRIPTION!
Don't see many subies here in Michigan
Hi there,DO you have a tutorial on how to flash Carberry to the ECU ? Thanks for replying :)Keep it going (Y)
Ashik A Do you mean tuning, and not simply flashing? Flashing is the same process as any other ROM, but you need a 02/03 US Spec WRX ECU.
As far as tuning, I can't help you with that. I've only ever dabbled with tuning and typically get results I don't like, so I leave Thad to the professionals :)
I just meant flashing. If i read properly. It's just using ecuflash and a tactrix cable , right ? Tuning got a buddy for that but I just wanted to flash my ecu to carberry.
Are you on fb ? If yes , please add me " kenjyaitc "
Beautiful man. Since you tuned this, could you please tell me what gives you the chirps when you get off the throttle? I have been dying to know, and I have read various different things about what causes it, but still no real answer. Thanks in advance !
Thanks very much mate!
The flutter you hear is the turbo stalling because there is no pressure release valve, AKA Blow Off Valve or Bypass Valve.
Many people will hate and say that it's horrible and I'm killing the turbo, but this isn't TRUE compressor surge. Do a search for Supra Surge and you'll find the video I'm speaking of.
Travis Tichelaar Oh okay, awesome ! thanks man. I appreciate it.
V band flange for a tailpipe? original lol
Thanks! I had it lying around and since I've never liked actual exhaust tips, this seemed like the most logical solution. :)
how do you get antilag? what EWG do you have
It's in the description: You'll need to run the CarberryROM available for 16bit ECU's. The EWG was a GrimmSpeed up pipe and TiAL 38mm wastegate.
The boost tube sounded terrible! Good setup on a bad tune..if any tune at all. What EMS we're u running?
is that a screamer pipe sticking out of the bonnet?? beast lol
Fuck yeah it is. =)
love it ! someone with the balls to do it and drive it on the street haha
What's the purpose of disconnecting the MAF sensor? Just curious.
Glass-Man-252 Just to show that the car is Speed Density tuned and doesn't rely on that information anymore. I could have deleted the MAF entirely, but if I removed it I would have been left with a large hole that I would have needed to fill. :)
What are your dyno numbers on this setup? Im really interested in the world of small garrets or a 20g turbo. Would be on 93 aswell
Holy cow! Where did you launch from? Mine is stock T___T
Nice turbo surge lol
ok you have to answer this for me. what BOV do you have for the sequential? or is that just compressor surge. also antilag? how is your turbo? i need these sounds in my life lol
Sorry, sequential what?
The chirping you hear is compressor stall. Yep, the car has antilag. Turbo is alive and doing very well, even with antilag, launch control, and no BOV.
You need to run the CarBerry Speed Density ROM in order to get all of these features. Go to romraider.com and read up on what all is involved. :)
Travis Tichelaar sequential BOVs are apparently a new type of BOV that make the "surge" sound
Travis Tichelaar oh also... god damn. this tune? i have never had a tune before.... first wrx i have owned and im only 17 lol so im just wondering... how the hell do i get all this to work? all the possabilities seem endless with this carberry one
Travis Tichelaar also one thing i cant seem to find, is how did you mount the switches for the antilag and launch control in the cabin? wires from ecu? and if so where from?
skatermike4life1000 Go read a forum before you blow your engine up.
What up-pipe/ewg are you using? I've been a little hesitant to get an up-pipe that has the flex fitting cuz I feel as though the ALS might destroy the flex portion of most up-pipes. The only solid (non flex section) up-pipe I've been able to find that is setup for an EWG is ultimate racing.
I used the GrimmSpeed up pipe with TiAL V-Band connection for the EWG. The short amount of time that the AL/LC is used, I didn't think it to be an issue, and neither did the tuner.
The GrimmSpeed Up Pipe was fantastic quality, and I would absolutely buy it again if I needed another up pipe w/EWG flange.
Or are you using a stock location housing?
There were no launches done on this car in this video. I showed the launch control, but never actually utilized it.
Stock is fun man. Enjoy the knowledge that you really can't break these cars when they're all stock. :)
Hey Trav, where did you get full boost on the 2871? I'm looking to get a gt2876 in stock location form soon.
wait? Why does he pull the intake plug off
Showing off he’s Speed density
So anti lag killling turbos is a myth? Ive always wanted to have anti lag soo bad
Not necessarily a myth, no.
The way I look at it is like this: Everything eventually fails with use. Heat and pressure are hard on things, and in normal use that's what a turbo sees. If you use Anti-lag, you're probably accelerating the rate at which the turbo will fail, but there's no way to quantify by how much.
I accepted the fact that everything will fail, and with that just chalked it up to of the turbo failed, I'd just get a new one.
By the way: the turbo on this car was a prototype 2871r for the WRX and was installed in 2002, has over 100k miles on it, and has always been run really hard (it was TiAL's development car initially, so lots of dyno time), and it's still fine, even with Anti-lag and a block off plate. ;)
2:05 scare the crap out off the camaro guy😂
How are you running anti-lag?
So how long did that turbo last from all of the compressor surge with no bov?
If I missed I apologize but two questions, 1. 2004 5 speed wrx trans? And what clutch/flywheel are you using ?
Michael Madison I used that transmission because when I bought this car it had a failing center differential and a friend had the 04 trans laying around. It doesn't hurt that they're stronger than the 02/early 03 trans, either. :)
Clutch/flywheel was a Exedy Stage 1 setup. Held the power great, had a good pedal feel/engagement, and they're relatively cheap.
Grand Rapids. :)
whats the reason for deleting bov ?
For Speed density did you mount your IAT on your intercooler before the throttle body??
No, it is mounted on the intake manifold itself, under the throttle body. This was my tuners ideal spot, and this is where I still install them on the other Speed Density tuned Subaru's I've built since this car.
How do you get it to sound like that when shifting/reving? Is it just a type of blow off valve or?
+Damon Pallett What sound are you referring to? The revving sound is the external wastegate, the sound while shifting is the turbo surging, and the banging during deceleration is the anti-lag. :)
What about the IAT sensor? Did you install another one and used the MAF wiring?
Rodrigo Santana Yes sir. GM IAT drilled/tapped in to the intake manifold like Jason Carberry recommends, and the two wires used for the factory MAF heating element were run to the IAT sensor.
Travis T Thanks a lot for the answer man! Can you tell me if you had to change any scaling tables for the IAT sensor? I believe it's different from the one integrated on the MAF.
Rodrigo Santana You're welcome!
You definitely will need to rescale for the new sensor. I can't help you with what those values are specifically, but a glance over at the RomRaider website, specifically the Carberry ROM section, should provide you with the knowledge you seek.
What blow off valve are u using I need it
sounds like a synapse bov
He's not using a bov. watch the video and he has a plate where the bov/bpv would be.
don't think it's a BOV. It sound like a pure turbo spool
3:15 anyone notice that wrong turn signal lol
Any issues with the turbo yet? I hear flutter
None at all. Car was scrapped last winter because someone pulled out in front of it, but the turbo/engine/transmission were all in great working shape, and have since gone in to other cars and continue to work.
+Travis T Im very sorry to hear that man. I appreciate the quick response. I asked because I plan on blocking off my bpv soon.
I'd say go for it. I've made about 10 block off plates, and only one turbo failed. That turbo was a factory VF48 on my last Blobeye (check out my other video with the black Blobeye in the snow), after I sold it to a kid near Detroit. I don't attribute that failure to the block off plate, but to the kid who bought the car and the abuse he no doubt put it through.
Don't get me wrong, I certainly drove my cars hard and they never failed me, but I also took good care of them. I know the kid who bought my black car and had the turbo fail, didn't.
+Travis T Thanks and I feel you on that. Its not easy watching someone else treat your pride and joy like shit even though it was a sale. Thanks again!
i Have it sitting on my kitchen table right now. selling it for my old roommate who owned this car. made 25 psi at one point and things still mint.
for whatever reason I thought the through-hood meant that you would rip it through a hood hahahaha thing sounds mean as fuck by the way
+beans Hahaha, that would have been a much more entertaining video. Like the 2-step in the Hood video. :D
I'll make that video with my next car... It'll have shotgun sounding 2-step and I'll go scare some people. =)
Not the best idea to run without a Bpv/Bov but it sounds mean as hell.
stock ecu?
Yes, factory ECU. :)
What blow off valve someone please tell me
+hypo303 Dude, it says right in the video and there are tons of comments here: There is no BOV. Get a plate machined if you want it to sound like this.
+Travis T is it bad for the engine ?
+Travis T will this hurt my engine and where do I buy this plate
If you listen to the interwebz, your turbo will explode if you don't have some type of pressure release valve. I did my research and was confident that wouldn't happen, so I made this block off plate and the car has been fine for a very long time.
I don't know of anyone making BPV/BOV block off plates, sorry bud. I make them for myself and a few friends, but I don't sell them.
+Travis T thx I really appreciate the help
so what are your 1/4 mi like? and whp please?
+cumminsturbo98 The car never ran down the drag strip so I don't know the 1/4 mile trap/ET.
On 93, the car put down a healthy 330/320 on a DynoJet at 19psi. On e85, the car started to lift the heads at 385/350. Keep in mind this is a factory ej205 with the Garrett GT2871r, full exhaust, and fueling mods.
Is the ALS legal?
Who da fuck thumbs down?? Cool video man, I just started making subie videos myself, check em out if you get a chance. :)
Yeahhhhhhhh Haha sounds so fuckin good
popcorn subaru
i hear lots of unhealthy turbo-related noises...surge/stall. that turbo won't last long.
Surge doesn't affect turbos my man. Know your stuff before you comment, that's literally a myth
its on my kitchen table right now. In pristine condition.
