In this video, we’re going to look at three reasons Trump could actually be good for the UK: namely, that the UK might avoid a trade war; might be able to capitalise on America’s own economic woes; and might be able to strike a new deal with the EU.

There may well be an opportunity here for the UK, but you can guarantee we will fail to capitalise on it
and here lies the issue with United Kingdom. You guys complain so fucking much when things go wrong, but when opportunity arises you are so pessimistic it's insane. If this is what you are like with your personal life then I don't know if you will get anywhere
I'm tired of the constant pessimism in this country
@@euanstokes2828 if you search UK on youtube, you will see countless of videos trying to portray UK as a country in decline. Never anything positive.
Whilst things are awful right now, this isn’t exclusively just the UK, it’s around the world. Additionally, time and time again the UK has always managed to overcome crisis: from the 2 world wars, cold war, countless financial crisis, etc. It will overcome this one as well
@@jos9105 its just some British dark humour, we are a self deprecating people
@@euanstokes2828 we have constant pessimism, because of the constant lies and failures of politicians. Brexit? Failure. Lower migration? Nope. Did austerity reduce our debt? Nope. Record high NHS waiting lists? Yep. Councils going bankrupt? Yep. More London centralisation? Yep. HS2 Northern Leg cancelled. Yep. Etc. etc. this country just sucks man.
My only thought is “because we have nothing to offer America in our current state” isn’t a very good answer to avoiding a trade war
Saved by our own economic ineptitude
I bet "because otherwise the uk will go back to the european union" is quite the good answer to avoiding a trade war
Since the requirement to get a trade war ARE FUCKING STUPID
Did you miss the first 3 minutes of the video? We're not being slapped with tariffs because we run a surplus with them. which means we depend on them, which is something to offer.
Did you pay attention? The whole reason we're not getting slapped with tariffs is because we run a trade deficit with them whereas other countries usually have the opposite. Financial services are also pretty tariff resistant.
Fortunately we not have oil, for him to pinch.
_"A month into Trump's first term..."_ I know it feels like that, but, guys, it's just been two weeks (I take it the 'first term' was just a slip).
The media puts a magnifying glass on trump in weird ways. Donald trump holds the same position that Joe Biden did from 2016-2020. During that time TLDR made more videos about trump than Biden. Joe Biden was riddled with dementia while starting wars for profit and TLDR and every major news outlet were silent about it. Pretty weird right?
@@Buckets1000, interesting, I'd forgotten that! On the comment, though, Ben was saying: _"A month into Trump's first term and the UK looks surprisingly safe"._ Present tense, and he goes on to talk about Starmer as PM, someone who was a fresh MP in 2017. (If I've misunderstood you, apols.)
Trump was asked and said a few days ago that the UK is bad what they've done but might be forgiven but the EU is worse, and he is considering the tariffs.
I think they’re just wanting to avoid editing the exit clip for as long as possible lol
Starmer has a real opportunity here to have his cake and eat it. Agreeing new relational trade deals with the EU whilst simultaneously capitalising on Trump’s very clear Anglophile tendencies and generous trade negotiations.

Can you do a video on multiple local councils requesting to increase council taxes by 15%
No shocks there, they've nought to work with...
It's widely acknowledged that many councils have been cash strapped for the last 15+ years. There's no chance of additional funding by central government, for now at least, and there is more demand than ever for services and infrastructure. Those things aren't for free, so why is there such a push-back against being asked to pay for them? The alternative to higher council tax is higher general taxation and the risk of some areas being underfunded while others have a surplus (as has been the case in recent years). When councils are underfunded, finances are spread thin, nothing is done "properly" which ultimately leads to higher costs to fix things, corner cutting just causes waste. A one off above inflation increase will not repair all the damage of the last 15 years, but it will help.
Everyone should accept that things have to be paid for or we "do without".
If people currently don't use any of the public services, facilities and amenities provided by your local authority, it doesn't mean they never will.
I expect most people use the footpaths, roads, schools, parks, leisure centres, waste collection, planning and building control, citizens advice etc at subsidised cost or cost free at point of use. The local authority can't be expected to maintain those on a very frayed and tattered shoestring budget.
@@philipcrossley1279Councils certainly need more funding, but I think a land tax or some other kind of wealth tax would go a lot further than making average workers pay even more than they already do
@eMJayHaych.13 A land tax imposed by central government or local government?
Council tax banding could be modified to take account of land value, and apply an appropriate level of taxation, but I suspect that would require parliamentary approval and new legislation, which might see sufficient opposition to slow the process by years.
If it was to be done at national level, we might see inappropriate sharing of the proceeds, especially if the government changes.
@eMJayHaych.13 land tax, while objectively the best final outcome, will be HEAVILY contested by the richest in the country. It's not a simple process, and will take a battle.

trump being good for the UK as he spares us a trade war is not a benefit of trump because without him there would be no trade war to begin with

If you consider TLDR to be biased and apologetic of something then you need to reflect on your way of thinking. The channel makes a considerable effort to look at world events from a pragmatic standpoint without involving any emotional arguments and reactions, which I really appreciate. Yes, sometimes they have hiccups and inaccuracies, but first, those are honest mistakes without malicious intent, and second, they condense news into videos of less than ten minutes, hence TLDR News. If you want to listen to complete analyses on the topic of "orange man literally H-man" or "orange man savior of the universe" then just find yourself a nice echo chamber channel that aligns with your beliefs and don't litter the neutral space with spastic nonsense

Im British living in Canada. I hope the UK does not align itself more closely with the US. Pandering Trump while he attacks his closest allies is nonsensical, as Churchill once said "appeasment is like feeding your friends to a hungry crocodile in the hopes that youll be eaten last" I hope this drives the UK and Canada closer to the EU. I was neutral on the subject of Brexet until I observed the tangible harm it did to the UK.
Churchills warmongering led our country to lose our empire and now we're overun with outsiders who at best are apathetic to our culture and at worst despise our culture.
Tangible harm to the UK? Like our native population which has lived on the isles for a thousand years being very quickly replaced through mass immigration.
As a brit living in the usa I hope the uk does get closer to the US. Brexit hasn't been doing so well because of mismanagement not the actual principal of brexit.
@LukeDraper-p6u I've lived in the US before too, watching the US administrations current attempts to bully its allies leads me to belive it's not on the correct side of history currently.
With hindsight I'm now of the opinion that the time, effort and money expended on Brexit would have been more beneficial if it was spent on improving Britain's industry and particularly tech sector.

Utah and Delaware are the only two states that have the *United Kingdom* as their number one trading partner and both of these states, I noticed that a lot of their stuff even says made in the United Kingdom instead of made in China or made in Mexico or made in Canada, these two states are less affected than the rest of the other states from the Tariffs, considering that the UK is their biggest trading partner in these two states, Besides Hawaii which has Australia has its biggest trading partner.
People seem to forget that the United States is a union of States no different than the European Union but each of these states have their own interests and choose which countries get to be their biggest partner in trade.
I see it as USA biggest trading partner with the UK, but the EU is the 2nd biggest, Trump doesn't like the EU and the UK has left, but needs decent relations with both, get closer to the EU and upset Trump and get higher tariffs, ger closer with USA and it looks worst for us with the EU, he's stuck and the UK is between a rock and a hard place, we already have a enough US influence in our language and all the takeaways like McD's here. This government is in a pretty strong position, both Starmer and Lammy have worked well to appeal to Trump's ego and innate Anglophilia, while not picking a side between the US and EU. Picking Mandelson (scummy as he might be) for ambassador was also a shrewd move as he's well-connected with most of the factions of the new administration. Now it just remains to be seen if they play their cards well and secure a strong outcome for the UK.

How can you export a service? Surely, the only way you can do that is if the service provider leaves the country meaning it's not the UK's money right? I don't get it
We're using youtube and that's a service. I suppose they count thing like banking, and music, tv, etc.
If a Chinese student pays £50,000 a year to study at a UK university, that's £50,000 being taken from China and spent on something in the UK which is functionally the same as an export. This mostly applies to business services like finance and insurance but also things like advertising and architecture.

Oh, discussions with the EU come to the hot phase. Fish appears on the agenda 🤣
One thing I've been trying to figure out is the effect of a trade war on third countries. If country A and country B both slap 25% tariffs on one another, but neither on country C, then presumably both countries will now have quite a lot of stuff they'd otherwise sell to each other, but which is now is uncompetitive in each other's markets. Meaning you'd think country C would benefit, it's products would now have less competition, and it should be able to buy stuff for less.
Of course, I'm not an economist and the net-effect on country C could still be negative, if it results in a global economic slowdown. But still, that picture makes intuitive sense.
