@Andytube I am so thankful that you have done videos!!! Your attention to instructional detail is astounding - for anyone who is interested in maintaining, restoring or just admiring the engineering behind many vintage sewing machines.
Welcome, but I'm the one thanking you for rescuing those great machines. If my videos help with that then I'm a happy guy. BTW, my playlist page has almost 600 videos and the playlists are by subject, like timing, or also my model number. ua-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists Thanks for the nice comment, Suzanne, and take care.
Thank you so much for providing this type of content. A woman had given us one of these sewing machines for free, saying it worked, but the motor was revving up and not spinning the wheel at all. Turned out it had locked up and thanks to your video we figured that out, were able to take it apart, oil it, and get it working again. Invaluable information here. Thank you!
I'm glad you found my channel and thanks for rescuing that nice machine and helping it get back to sewing. It was born to sew you could say and I think you'll love the performance and reliability and strength. Thanks for taking time to comment. Take Care.
There are repair shops for sewing machines and everyone should take their machine in once in a while and have it tuned and an extra thorough cleaning, if they don't know how to do it themselves shops avail
Andy, thanks much. Your video and explanations were just right to guide me through replacing the belt on my Singer 327. People like you make life a little easier.
Hi Andy. I was doing some maintenance on my 328K, and I needed some information about the bobbin winder that I remembered you had mentioned in your 327K playlist. Easy to find this video, and then even easier to find the bobbin winder section because you have put chapter headings in the the timeline! Thank you so much, it was so easy to find the information I needed--which was which way does that cupped washer go on the hinged screw of the bobbin winder.
Thank you, Carole. It's always good to hear from you and thanks for mentioning the chapters on the timeline. It takes extra editing time to add those, but it seems worth it when I have to go back and see something to answer a viewers email. I'm impressed that UA-cam added the feature and if I had the time I'd go back on all my videos and add chapters, but with 500+ videos it's too much! Take care and be safe. ✨
The plastic belt wheel attached to motor cracked. There is a set screw on the wheel but I need to figure out how to move the motor enough to slip it off. I hope I can find a replacement for it. Hopefully, one that isn’t plastic! Do you have any experience with that?
plastic belt wheel = pulley. Here are all my model 327k videos in a playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKHFzTFVJrwVQT6hMfXxFHt.html One of those 18 videos is all about the motor: ua-cam.com/video/sDcexZeS0f0/v-deo.html No company is making new parts like that original. You can buy the entire vintage motor for $20: www.ebay.com/itm/SINGER-328K-SEWING-MACHINE-Replacement-Vintage-Original-Motor-Tested/154236225286?hash=item23e9320706:g:M9QAAOSw~75f0Rhx If you have superglue and baking soda you may be able to repair the pulley. Combining those two makes for a very strong bond as shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/NXx6JyP9d5U/v-deo.html Good luck, Mary Ann.
Hello Andy, I hope you are doing well. Have you ever replaced the pulley on the motor with just a metal pulley before? I have a 328K that the pulley broke.
I just recently heard from a viewer that bought a 328K and it had a metal pulley on the motor and not the original pulley/fan. He said the machine worked great and he had just fixed the tension. I've never had a broken pulley. Replacement pulleys online are about $8 - 10. Many of those are push-on. If you have a pulley that fits the shaft and the belt I don't see a problem. You could just buy a replacement motor if you wanted: www.ebay.com/itm/284540862707?hash=item423ff500f3:g:DrkAAOSwCo9hnYDw
Can this hand wheel removal be used for removing the hand wheel for singer 224? Cause ours has tightened quite a bit so i was wondering if maybe i can clean the inside to fix it
I've never seen a Singer Model 224 here and can find no parts list for it. I found an instruction manual on the SInger website here: www.singer.com/search/support?title=224 If that is the machine you are asking about I think the handwheel comes off the same way, from looking at the pictures on page 9.
Hi Andy, I found on my singer 690u make some knocking noise when the "hand wheel" installed, I already try some trick to reduce its, (remove the spring inside, give some insulator/silincer in the empty/vacant space inside this plastic wheel) but the knocking noise still present when nstalled, i checked the hand wheel movement is free. do you have any opinion about its? thank you, sir.
Maybe I can help. I don't have a model 690U here, but we call it 750 Golden. You hear the handwheel but the problem may be at the other end of the main arm shaft. There is a "collar" and a washer there before the arm goes into the front for the counterbalance. The original washer may have been made of fiber, plastic, or ceramic. The washer can wear out and break apart or the collar can move a bit. I and others have had this problem with your style of machine. I have a video of a different model where I show adjusting the collar. This model has no washer, but it will show you the place the washer should be if you pause at 5:14 in the video and see where the tip of my screwdriver is pointing. That's where the washer on your machine should be I think. Here is the video ua-cam.com/video/bYqVRDTAHfo/v-deo.html They make a replacement washer that is open and not a full circle. This is so you can slip it on the arm shaft without taking everything apart. You can find them online (I don't know where you live) Here is a big seller of parts to show you what I mean: www.sewingpartsonline.com/shaft-washer-singer-163990sn.aspx Here is a seller in Samoa who sells them: store.tandtrepair.com/163990.html He gives a 20% discount to my viewers using code andy-h-yt until the end of 2021. You can also maybe make your own. What I had before was as the machine ran and the cam stack put torque on the arm shaft it would move left-and-right between that collar hitting the left body and the handwheel bouncing on the right body. Replacing the washer and adjusting the collar fixed that problem. Of course, I have no idea if this will help you, but can only guess based on what I and others found. It's hard to diagnose a problem like that without touching the machine, right? Maybe this can help you and good luck.
thank you for your respond, your answer very helpfull. It is yes, litlle bit gap play in the collar, so I did tighten the gap, now the knocking noise much more reduce, not disturbing anymore. and this little beatifull machine will survive 50 years more again. my best regards for you from indonesia, thank you, sir.
On a vintage 237 fashionmate out of dry storage I could not move the handwheel at all. After lots of oil eventually I could turn it with a lever, not by hand. There seems to be a "high" spot which drags (rust?) I can now turn past the hang-up by hand. Is there a particular part of this machine that if loosened, might free it up or must it be taken completely apart to find the "hang-up"?
A good question, Joyce. Any moving part on a machine can cause a "hang-up". When dealing with a totally "frozen" machine I usually apply cheap sewing machine oil or something like WD-40 to all the oil points listed in the Singer Instruction Manual which you can get FREE here: www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/SINGER%20237%20Sewing%20Machine.pdf Patience is the best tool in this case. Letting the new oil/penetrant soften the old dried up and hardened oil is best; forcing the machine with a wrench or lever is the worst. Too many parts can be bent/damaged, re needle bar, take-up lever or even a shaft. You can use a hair drier to warm the machine and new oil too, which can safely speed up the process. If you use anything but sewing machine oil you must flush it out of the machine after you get things moving b/c products like WD-40 actually break-up oil. A good cleaning is always great for a vintage machine. Here is a video showing a simplified example of the process I use to clean: ua-cam.com/video/Z2DPIbR2lKw/v-deo.html You can find more detailed cleaning videos among the 450+ videos on my channel: ua-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlfeatured?view_as=public I am in the middle of a series for the model 327K right now and have done a needle bar video and take-up lever binding video. Here is a link to this series: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKHFzTFVJrwVQT6hMfXxFHt.html If you feel there really is rust in the machine it is best to use a rust remover before doing any oiling (oil lessens the effect of the rust remover) I use a product called "The Must for Rust" by Rustoleum. Once you get the machine as free moving/clean as you wish then think about final oiling with Tr-Flow Oil: www.triflowlubricants.com/product/tri-flow-superior-lubricant-drip-bottle-2/ Thanks for watching my channel and good luck.
Did you use the same type of belt both times or two different ones? Are they original V-Belt style or something else? Is it a clean break or shredded? Can you provide a link to where you bought the belt/belts online?
Hi Andy, me again…missed this message, but I’m back. Belt broke again 😮. Clean break… They were all round belts. Hi again …Andy , I ordered the belt for my Singer 327K and unfortunately it is too big. I wonder if you are able to provide me with the belt number again? (I was sure I had the correct belt number). Thank you very much.

So the "bobbin holder" is under the slide plate below the needle. If you mean the bobbin winder spindle the hold the bobbin for winding then it could be "stuck" to do dried up oil inside. Can you spin the tire and turn the spindle with your fingers? There is a small hole called an "oil port" on the bobbin winder frame between the tire and the spindle. (13:58 in this video) If you can spin the tire with your fingers but the tire won't spin when winding against the handwheel just try pushing on it lightly for better contact; it may just be a worn/hard tire. There could also be oil on the side of the handwheel where the tire turns against it.

Why the bobbing holder is not moving any solution for that one
