no, it will not know if there is a carpet, unless the carpet is too high for it to climb cover. So, it's just carpet, the unit will assume it's just a floor and will vacuum and mop at the same time. You may need one of the higher end models which may have the feature to lift up the mop.. those are expensive though

Without the camera the robot is like a human without any eyes
