Good! Glad someone brings that up. Human heuristic-style reasoning has a good deal of bias inherent in it. Some of it functions simply to reduce uncertainty; and some of it is anti-aversive. Sometimes it's just more efficient, even if it doesn't yield an ideal level of truth: size something up once or twice by observing its behavior, attribute an explanation to it, and you know how to proceed around it thenceforward, as a "rule of thumb," which may or may not be accurate, but which "works."

Ironically just watched a video talking about how scientists are normally experts in extremely narrow fields,and often arrogantly pontificate about areas way outside their field of expertise.Many have little knowledge outside their chosen field and are often philisophically very naive.The blind faith people put in anyone with a lab coat on is amazing.They have become a modern cultural priesthood. "Would you need science to tell you when it was wrong to kill someone?" It is such an obvious fact that killing is undesirable for those who want social cohesion, that you don't need to even do "science" to demonstrate the fact. You just need to know that killing is suffering, and humans don't like suffering by definition. I don't need more than that to call it wrong. I don't even feel the need to refer to that as a "moral" decision, it is a purely logical one.

There is no doubt in my mind that God is our literal Father of our souls and Creator. I am not brainwashed. I am highly educated, IQ 145, love the hard sciences etc. Even without these credentials anyone can come to know that there IS indeed a God who loves us and as told to us repeatedly: Seek and Ye shall find. If you sincerely want to know God, get on your knees, sincerely pray and ask God to manifest Himself to you in your life and He will! Spiritual knowledge must be discerned in a spiritual way. You can pontificate till the cows come home:) and this will lead to nowhere. Humble yourself, truly seek God and you will know for yourself that God is Love and is our Father and Creator.

Wilczek has it right when he suggests that some portion of humankind can by sheer effort invent a better way of telling stories about the world than is found in certain "ancient texts", at least if you prefer to understand what sort of PHYSICAL world it is in which you live. It is also a great improvement on much that is in those texts simply to either throw them away, analyze them into their origins as a philological exercise, use them as grist for analyzing cults which use them as propaganda, or just let the collect dust on the shelf. As to "what Truth, and what Goodness" there are to be found in them, it turns out that it is either something we already know or take for granted, something that most people already more or less believed or imagined, or else a plagiarism from another spiritually significant text, one which was taken (lifted), distorted, and in most cases ignored or burned, and possibly also copied and buried away in some damned vault under some damned temple. It is a landmine field at best. Better to take the words of the wise man seriously, and "Know Thyself".

If revelation is a valid source of information then anyone can say anything and claim it is from a god (or The God, whatever that is) and no one can deny your claims. Get enough followers and poof, you have a religion. Mormons anyone? If the Abrahamic-god is so powerful, why couldn't it come up with a better method at making itself known? It simply doesn't exist. Can some god exist? Yes, I suppose so. But not this god. Statistically speaking it's not even on the radar. Why do so many people believe? Some ideas spread like wildfire and they get passed on. They become a part of the culture. Unfortunately this is what happened with the Abrahamic-god. It will take many centuries to rid ourselves of it, if ever.
Your comment is very interesting and explains why theists would believe certain notions no matter how illogical. There have been studies conducted which show a correlation between theistic belief and levels of intellect i.e. the higher one's intellect, the less likely they are to believe in god. There would obviously be exceptions to this but in general, your idea of a fundamental bias in the brain to reduce undesirable information is well worth further investigation. Thank you.
I would propose the "Belief" is supernatural. We either 1) believe because of material determinism in which case we have no reason to trust that our beliefs are rational and not a deterministic delusion of physics on one level and evolution on another, and also in which case, calling our beliefs rational, or presupposing that they line up with an underlying reality is a logically superfluous (Russel's teapot), and faith-based claim that can not be justified by any materialistic scientific or logical process, or 2) come to our beliefs because we have freedom to do so, in which case we have to appeal to a super natural mechanism that enables true not-deterministic free will.

I think a big part of human nature is wanting to believe in a higher being to give us purpose and motivation and when we become logical or intelligent enough to understand the heaps of evidence contradicting this, we stop believing and are truly liberated. Also, Frank Wilczek is my favorite physicist in the world haha his work in quantum mechanics is nothing less then brilliant.

The "feeling" is irrelevant, the only relevant aspects are whether something is consensual (a desired action) and whether it causes harm (i.e. an unwanted effect). The feelings of empathy simply mirror that logic. But what makes it wrong is that it is not conducive to social stability, not the feeling of revulsion against it. If we simply went with feelings, then racism and sexism would still be considered morally acceptable.

I think for most people it's hard to go against what their parents instilled in them as a base for belief. When you're brought up to believe that there's a god, it becomes very difficult for some to let go of mythology and accept reality. Not impossible, just hard. Eventually I hope we all can accept the truth.

not really complaining about the use of the word. i was just saying its a double-edged sword. we cant really argue past our own presumptions. however, assuming you as well understand the difference between something physical and abstract, and that intuition, not logic is basic, you can then understand why i don't use observation/reason exclusively when trying to figure out why im here.
For your comsideration: What if one could enter your thought processes as though they were your own? You can't see who that one is nor can you prevent that one from doing so. And what if that one was your adversary?
Im not in any way saying we shouldnt use statistical data. im only saying that logic has its limits, and after that we can only rely on our intuitive understandings. this is in the case of things that we believe to be beyond physical. im saying this type of discernment is completely rational and valid.

i can answer this pretty simply; i can because i do. raindrops dont have the capability of perceiving purpose. I perceive the need for purpose, as i think most of us intuitively do so. i have no reason to distrust the existence of this concept.

@Morboxx I think that a LOT of philosophy is based on science. Also Science has played a pivotal role in the confirmation or disproving of certain philosophies. I have read Hawking's book and honestly, if you read it, it IS completely about Science. Hawking very plainly states god was not necessary, and that gave some people the red ass. Wouldn't even be a discussion if there hadn't been such a huge religious backlash against this science. People were pissed Hawking's evidence lacked god.
@Morboxx There is no working a priori refutation of scepticism and therefore there is no closure in any of this. Also, psychologically, there is no leaving our human subjectivities. We have a specific way of sensoric perception of the world, therefore we may not be able to see the big picture of the cosmos. And I don't think that Hawking would call his ideas absolute truths himself.
Well like I said the pew poll I referred to suggests it's not only 40%, it's around 51%. And that poll is from 2009. Only 28% actually identified themselves as atheist or agnostic in the poll. If religiosity is indirectly proportional to education, why is the MD example counter to the one you have about PhDs? Shouldn't MDs have a lower amount of religiosity than an anthropology major? I think there are other factors at play here than simply education.

At the nano level all attempts to create pure geometric shapes must fail because everything is made of lumpy, fuzzy atoms. Far more painful to see someone so far gone in their delusion that nothing, even lack of reason, evidence and expert consensus for their opinion, can alter their mistaken view of reality.
I watched the video by Neil deGrasse Tyson and he said that the number of scientists who believe in God dropped to 40%. The poll I am referring to states around the same number who believe in a personal God is 33%. Around 18% believe in an impersonal God. But the poll states that only 17% are atheist and 11% are agnostic. The only valid claim one can make is that the majority of elite scientists don't believe in God. There could be many reasons for that.
Your analogy is a tickle, but spurious. Intellectual prowess is not like a Rolls Royce, since an auto needs a driver no matter how sophisticated it is. In the case of intellect, the machine and the operator belong to the same entity: a human individual. You're aware of something arising from your own mental processes that seems to presents itself as separate from yourself. You interpret this cognitive experience as God. This is not "knowability of God," but it is a known phenomenon in humans.
BTW when studies are conducted the results are taken as they are... questions are asked, results are correlated and then reported. Like for example the question 'have you attended church in the last week?' the answer to that repeatedly in the US over the past 40 years has been 40% of respondents answering yes. However the actual numbers in attendance have shown the figure is 17.5% in reality.... In demographics and marketing statistics this is referred to has the 'halo' effect.
@bimmerella Massive misunderstanding. I don't think that a god or something similar is necessary in any way. But I think the same way about atheism. And I know that "a lot of philosophy is based on science". Especially metaphysics. Still, there can't be clear evidence against metaphysical entities we don't know anything about. Atheism is a way of narrowing down your ontological focus in a similar way that religion does. And I simply don't think that it is completely satisfactory.
I completely agree with you. Before the Big Bang at t=0 there is no space & time and the density of the universe is infinite since any mass divided by 0 space is infinite. Whereas vacuum fluctuations require a vacuum (empty space) in order for virtual particles to pop in/out of existence in a very short time. It also allows 1/100,000 gram as the maximum amount of matter in a volume of 10^-45 cm to avoid becoming a singularity. But with infinte density it becomes a singularity.

Good! Glad someone brings that up. Human heuristic-style reasoning has a good deal of bias inherent in it. Some of it functions simply to reduce uncertainty; and some of it is anti-aversive. Sometimes it's just more efficient, even if it doesn't yield an ideal level of truth: size something up once or twice by observing its behavior, attribute an explanation to it, and you know how to proceed around it thenceforward, as a "rule of thumb," which may or may not be accurate, but which "works."

Ironically just watched a video talking about how scientists are normally experts in extremely narrow fields,and often arrogantly pontificate about areas way outside their field of expertise.Many have little knowledge outside their chosen field and are often philisophically very naive.The blind faith people put in anyone with a lab coat on is amazing.They have become a modern cultural priesthood. (The fellow who brought this up was a leading expert on hormone transfer through patches on frog's underarms,btw!)As CS Lewis remarked ,those who worship science will find themselves to being ruled by a 'papacy of professors.'

It is such an obvious fact that killing is undesirable for those who want social cohesion, that you don't need to even do "science" to demonstrate the fact. You just need to know that killing is suffering, and humans don't like suffering by definition. I don't need more than that to call it wrong. I don't even feel the need to refer to that as a "moral" decision, it is a purely logical one.

The first replied, “Nonsense. And moreover if there is life, then why has no one has ever come back from there? Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery there is nothing but darkness and silence and oblivion. It takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know,” said the second, “but certainly we will meet Mother and she will take care of us.”
The first replied “Mother? You actually believe in Mother? That’s laughable. If Mother exists then where is She now?”
The second said, “She is all around us. We are surrounded by her. We are of Her. It is in Her that we live. Without Her this world would not and could not exist.”
Said the first: “Well I don’t see Her, so it is only logical that She doesn’t exist.”

Nowhere have I argued that. I might argue against evidence for an objective, universal purpose of human beings, but that is quite different to saying my or anyone's life has "no purpose".

There is no doubt in my mind that God is our literal Father of our souls and Creator. I am not brainwashed. I am highly educated, IQ 145, love the hard sciences etc. Even without these credentials anyone can come to know that there IS indeed a God who loves us and as told to us repeatedly: Seek and Ye shall find. If you sincerely want to know God, get on your knees, sincerely pray and ask God to manifest Himself to you in your life and He will! Spiritual knowledge must be discerned in a spiritual way. You can pontificate till the cows come home:) and this will lead to nowhere. Humble yourself, truly seek God and you will know for yourself that God is Love and is our Father and Creator.

Wilczek has it right when he suggests that some portion of humankind can by sheer effort invent a better way of telling stories about the world than is found in certain "ancient texts", at least if you prefer to understand what sort of PHYSICAL world it is in which you live. It is also a great improvement on much that is in those texts simply to either throw them away, analyze them into their origins as a philological exercise, use them as grist for analyzing cults which use them as propaganda, or just let the collect dust on the shelf. As to "what Truth, and what Goodness" there are to be found in them, it turns out that it is either something we already know or take for granted, something that most people already more or less believed or imagined, or else a plagiarism from another spiritually significant text, one which was taken (lifted), distorted, and in most cases ignored or burned, and possibly also copied and buried away in some damned vault under some damned temple. It is a landmine field at best. Better to take the words of the wise man seriously, and "Know Thyself".

Abstract objects are studied by philosophers. Abstract structures are studied by mathematicians. Abstract perception is studied by neurologists. So your lack of ability to think of reasons why scientists and philosophers might have relevant opinions, seems to be a lack of education on your part.
Dr. Albert Ellis, PhD and founder of REBT used to say something like, "When faced with evidence which contradicts their beliefs, rational people change their beliefs to fit the evidence and irrational people change the evidence to fit their beliefs." God as Creator is the only explanation which fits the known evidence. Any contrary opinion is an irrational and quite frankly silly. And all the PhDs in the world won't change that fact.

If revelation is a valid source of information then anyone can say anything and claim it is from a god (or The God, whatever that is) and no one can deny your claims. Get enough followers and poof, you have a religion. Mormons anyone? If the Abrahamic-god is so powerful, why couldn't it come up with a better method at making itself known? It simply doesn't exist. Can some god exist? Yes, I suppose so. But not this god. Statistically speaking it's not even on the radar. Why do so many people believe? Some ideas spread like wildfire and they get passed on. They become a part of the culture. Unfortunately this is what happened with the Abrahamic-god. It will take many centuries to rid ourselves of it, if ever.

Your comment is very interesting and explains why theists would believe certain notions no matter how illogical. There have been studies conducted which show a correlation between theistic belief and levels of intellect i.e. the higher one's intellect, the less likely they are to believe in god. There would obviously be exceptions to this but in general, your idea of a fundamental bias in the brain to reduce undesirable information is well worth further investigation. Thank you.
I would propose the "Belief" is supernatural. We either
1) believe because of material determinism in which case we have no reason to trust that our beliefs are rational and not a deterministic delusion of physics on one level and evolution on another, and also in which case, calling our beliefs rational, or presupposing that they line up with an underlying reality is a logically superfluous (Russel's teapot), and faith-based claim that can not be justified by any materialistic scientific or logical process, or
2) come to our beliefs because we have freedom to do so, in which case we have to appeal to a super natural mechanism that enables true not-deterministic free will.
answer question 2) “Can you think of any problem at all anyone could solve without observation, experimentation and reason?” It depends on what you call a problem. If you define your problem as simply being physical, then it wont need an abstract explanation. However the significance it has to the one solving the problem wont be explained using the same tools that were used to solve it. I think a big part of human nature is wanting to believe in a higher being to give us purpose and motivation and when we become logical or intelligent enough to understand the heaps of evidence contradicting this, we stop believing and are truly liberated. Also, Frank Wilczek is my favorite physicist in the world haha his work in quantum mechanics is nothing less then brilliant.

The "feeling" is irrelevant, the only relevant aspects are whether something is consensual (a desired action) and whether it causes harm (i.e. an unwanted effect). The feelings of empathy simply mirror that logic. But what makes it wrong is that it is not conducive to social stability, not the feeling of revulsion against it. If we simply went with feelings, then racism and sexism would still be considered morally acceptable.

I think for most people it's hard to go against what their parents instilled in them as a base for belief. When you're brought up to believe that there's a god, it becomes very difficult for some to let go of mythology and accept reality. Not impossible, just hard. Eventually I hope we all can accept the truth.

not really complaining about the use of the word. i was just saying its a double-edged sword. we cant really argue past our own presumptions. however, assuming you as well understand the difference between something physical and abstract, and that intuition, not logic is basic, you can then understand why i don't use observation/reason exclusively when trying to figure out why im here.

I propose the ancient example of Buddhism to show that a viable religion need not involve a God. Indeed, scientific discoveries have created a picture of the universe that is, for me at least, as impressive as the Judeo-Christian God. Unitarian Universalism honors that view of reality, and that is why I have been a part of it for over 40 years. I only wish the name were less cumbersome.

They both agree there is underling/ behind all of existence a Ground, Being, Source/Energy. Similar, perhaps to Plato.But( for them) not a personal God.

Okay fair enough and I have to agree with you on that. But there are other factors as well which affect the drop of faith in a God/belief in one.

Metaphysics has only got three ideas: God, freedom and immortality. Metaphysics does not require these ideas for the sake of natural science, but in order to go beyond nature. Nevertheless, the idea of a thinking nature (soul), in its immanent use it is the most important knowledge we have, together with the idea of freedom and that it is also truth
+Martin Portillo No, that was Kant and much of metaphysics since it was initially developed in ancient Greece is about reality, what is real. And we can ask a lot of questions that are not all reducible to the three ideas you listed.
@Morboxx I think that a LOT of philosophy is based on science. Also Science has played a pivotal role in the confirmation or disproving of certain philosophies. I have read Hawking's book and honestly, if you read it, it IS completely about Science. Hawking very plainly states god was not necessary, and that gave some people the red ass. Wouldn't even be a discussion if there hadn't been such a huge religious backlash against this science. People were pissed Hawking's evidence lacked god.
I wish more religious and non-religious people would watch this series.
@Morboxx There is no working a priori refutation of scepticism and therefore there is no closure in any of this. Also, psychologically, there is no leaving our human subjectivities. We have a specific way of sensoric perception of the world, therefore we may not be able to see the big picture of the cosmos. And I don't think that Hawking would call his ideas absolute truths himself.
Well like I said the pew poll I referred to suggests it's not only 40%, it's around 51%. And that poll is from 2009. Only 28% actually identified themselves as atheist or agnostic in the poll. If religiosity is indirectly proportional to education, why is the MD example counter to the one you have about PhDs? Shouldn't MDs have a lower amount of religiosity than an anthropology major? I think there are other factors at play here than simply education.

At the nano level all attempts to create pure geometric shapes must fail because everything is made of lumpy, fuzzy atoms. The platonic realm of pure geometry is an oversimplification - it exists only in our brains.

I watched the video by Neil deGrasse Tyson and he said that the number of scientists who believe in God dropped to 40%. The poll I am referring to states around the same number who believe in a personal God is 33%. Around 18% believe in an impersonal God. But the poll states that only 17% are atheist and 11% are agnostic. The only valid claim one can make is that the majority of elite scientists don't believe in God. There could be many reasons for that.

Your analogy is a tickle, but spurious. Intellectual prowess is not like a Rolls Royce, since an auto needs a driver no matter how sophisticated it is. In the case of intellect, the machine and the operator belong to the same entity: a human individual.
You're aware of something arising from your own mental processes that seems to presents itself as separate from yourself. You interpret this cognitive experience as God. This is not "knowability of God," but it is a known phenomenon in humans.
BTW when studies are conducted the results are taken as they are... questions are asked, results are correlated and then reported.
Like for example the question 'have you attended church in the last week?' the answer to that repeatedly in the US over the past 40 years has been 40% of respondents answering yes. However the actual numbers in attendance have shown the figure is 17.5% in reality....
In demographics and marketing statistics this is referred to has the 'halo' effect.
@bimmerella Massive misunderstanding. I don't think that a god or something similar is necessary in any way. But I think the same way about atheism. And I know that "a lot of philosophy is based on science". Especially metaphysics. Still, there can't be clear evidence against metaphysical entities we don't know anything about. Atheism is a way of narrowing down your ontological focus in a similar way that religion does. And I simply don't think that it is completely satisfactory.
I completely agree with you. Before the Big Bang at t=0 there is no space & time and the density of the universe is infinite since any mass divided by 0 space is infinite. Whereas vacuum fluctuations require a vacuum (empty space) in order for virtual particles to pop in/out of existence in a very short time. It also allows 1/100,000 gram as the maximum amount of matter in a volume of 10^-45 cm to avoid becoming a singularity. But with infinte density it becomes a singularity.
