Without being able to calculate the gear ratio precisely, I can tell at a glance it's like being stuck in 3rd or 4th of 4 gears. No acceleration off the line or hill climbing ability and hard on the clutch shoes slipping so much until it can fully engage. This would be acceptable on very flat land with few stop & gos on long distance rides. It could slowly get up to what would be a proper ratio for the top speed gear of a multispeed transmission and get good fuel economy at a cruise speed....BUT.... a single speed drive like this, to be more practical, needs a compromise ratio that givess better acceleration & hill climbing ability despite the loss of top speed, especially for the more common use locally, requiring frequent stops or operation at slow speeds in traffic etc. I would have to know more about what kind of driving he will be doing most of the time over what kind of terrain to suggest a good compromise but I can see he mostly needs a larger diameter sprocket on the axle to achieve the better useability he would have like if he had to choose only one gear of 4 or 5 gears available with a transmission. For offroad use or low speed use in town with low speed limits & lots of stops signs, & hills I would choose the equivalent of 2nd or third gear out of 4 or five. For frequent longer, higher speed trips on open flat smooth roads, he might want a higher ratio like 3rd gear of 4 or possibly 4th of 5. A 4 or 5 gear transmission would, in most circumstances, NOT be very useful, fun or practical if stuck in either of its first or last gears, right?.
At 11:39 you see that the rear axle only has a single belt pulley. Camera cuts to an angle from behind at 11:41 and it has a double belt pulley on the rear axle...well at around 6:30 you see that he turned the spindle designed for bearings into a solid shaft wheel hub...well if he did that, how in the hell did he get the single belt pulley off and get the new double belt pulley on?
Could have just cut the bottom at what ever angle it hit when you placed it where you liked it and put your support beam directly under it... Wouldn't have had to extend the frame only to place a support beam into it....
