This was her last single. She was in very poor health. It was painful for her to stand and she was having lung issues as well yet she was still able to perform with power. Her 1988 Tokyo Dome concert is considered to be legendary because she performed for two hrs despite being in extreme pain.
Her other famous songs include Ai sansan, Yawara, Ringo Oiwake, Kanashii sake, Makkana Taiyo, just to name a few. You can also find some clips of her when she was only 12yrs old - Kanashiki kuchibue and Tokyo Kid. (You would have to search the titles in Japanese text to find the movie clips.)

I just have to point out.... what an amazing time we live in that we can discover incredible artists like this from all over the world. I come from a time when the only music we could get our hands on was whatever they decided to pump over the air, or what you could find digging through racks of albums in a record store... usually with little more to go on than the cover art and song titles. Now you can get the name of an artist and instantly dive into all of their music and history. It's a great time to be alive for people that love to discover new things :)

My absolute favourite singer of all time - no question. I started studying Japanese a few years ago and stumbled upon Hibari when looking for songs with Japanese subtitles on screen to try and help me learn. I heard "Jinsei Ichiro" first which led me down a rabbit hole that I am still absolutely loving to this day. As Mochi says in the comments - the fact that she knew she was dying around this time - it makes you appreciate her even more. One of the lines is " Odayaka ni, Kono me wo makasete ittai" which is - I think - something like "I want to leave this body gently". The woman is a total legend and I am so glad I discovered her. It saddens me each day that she's no longer around.

It's worth noting that as a kid she packed a lot of talent and was both a movie and record star. Her debut coincided with a post WWII period of reckoning in Japan and her early film roles symbolized the agony and resiliency of the Japanese people as they waited in vain for lost loved ones to return from the battlefield and figured out how to emerge from complete ruin and poverty. The fact that she was so talented and the timing of her career cemented her as a Japanese icon. After childhood her life and her career were not without suffering and scandal, though in the end it still seems that everything she touched turned to gold and her record sales spiked after her death.

Music is universal and it is usually up to the performer to transmit the emotion to the audience. Here Misora did that as a seasoned and revered artist. And I think Angelina did it too in her interpretation as a very respectful homage to Misora and her grandfather ♥

It was her last single as she died a couple of months after its release, so you can say that this song is her swan song.
She was so revered in Japan that she actually had another song 20 years after her death - when Yamaha debuted Vocaloid AI they demonstrated its capabilities by using Hibari Misora's voice data to create a brand new song! I am so glad to find another non-Japanese person discovering the amazing Hibari Misora.
I'm a life long vinyl record collector from Australia, I've heard so many different musical acts over the years, my first taste of being amazed at what a musical artist can achieve came at an early age with the Beatles, and many others since then. The first artist to send chills down my spine was French chanteuse Edith Piaf. But when I finally discovered Hibari, it was almost a mystical experience. For such a huge talent to go virtually unknown in the English speaking world, is not just a damn shame, but almost a crime. Piaf is deservidly well-known internationally as one of the greatest voices of the 20th century. I hope that the day will come when Hibari is equally recognized and more music lovers around the world discover why the Japanese hold such reverence for her. If you haven't heard her song "Ai San San", you haven't truly lived. All I can say is "other-worldly"....

When I was 13 years old (in 1963), my parents took me to see a Japanese movie starring Misora Hibari as a young "singing samurai". Yes, she played the part of a young man. I never liked Japanese music, but when she sang in this movie....I fell in love with it. She also had me thoroughly convinced she was a young man. There are some videos of her singing "Yaware" dressed as a man and using the mannerisms of a samurai. Hope you'll see it someday. She's so awesome! Thanks for your reaction.

I have listen to. Hibari sing since 1955 . Hibari early records and films help bring Japan back from the devastating effects of WWII. I know you wanted to show her preforming, but recorded version is better although this was excellent also. As others have mentioned this was her swan song and the song itself is about looking to the past at the end of the road. Another great song among many is Yaware (Softly). about protecting a love.
Kawa no Nagare no youni lyric
    I came walking without realizing
    Down this narrow long path
    Looking back, in the distance
I can see my home town
    Through bumpy tracks
And paths with twist and turns
    I don’t even have a map
    And yet that’s the life
Ah like the flow of a river
    It runs so slow
    Thru the lapse of time
Ah like the flow of a river
    Ceaselessly
Skies are burning ablaze at twilight
    To live is to travel
    Down this endless path
Having my lover at my side
    In search of my dreams
Even if the ground is muddy
    In the pouring rain
    Someday I know
    Sunny days will come again
Ah like the flow of a river
    It runs calmly
I want to leave my body to it
Ah, like the flow of the river
Waiting for the snow to thaw
    In the season to come
Ah like the flow of the river
    It runs calmly
I want to leave my body to it
Ah, like the flow of the river
I hope it will go on forever
    Listening to the blue stream

I'm originally from Japan, I'm an Australian now. I lived in Japan for 30 years and Miss Hibari was always around me because my aunt was in same generation as her's. In my young time I wasn't so keen on her songs I just couldn't understand why she was using her voice like roller coaster, I couldn't get relaxing moment with her songs but now I'm 46 years old and love to listen to her songs. Maybe I've got more life experiences and always seeking something to soothe my feelings.
Can I ask you a question, have you ever listened to her songs in her younger time? My recommendation is Omatsuri Mambo.
This song is completely different from Kawa no nagare no yoni but if you like her singing, would be good to listen to, because you can find her skill and talent. I'm so glad you like Hibari's singing.

Like the flow of the river is to Misora Hibari as Nessum Dorma to Pavarotti, the song they are most known and loved for.
Oh a recommendation (if you've not already covered) is Ozaki Yukata. Try "I love you" but his die hard fans would go for "forget me not".

If you have, please let me know the link 😊

It's obvious to me that you had already listened to this song many times before, as you are humming to it from the very beginning. I love this song and it's great to see it getting played outside of Japan. But, if you're going to make a "first time reaction" video, it really should be just that.

There are so many legendary Japanese singers.....Misora Hibari, Chiyoko Shimakura, Minami Haruo, Murata Hideo....just to name a few....and their lives, they lived it to their fullest.
I’m personally a fan of Minami Haruo, his story, being a WW2 PoW at Siberia....
Despite being a purely traditional singer, he embraced modern genres (even rapping and house music), his motto being “okyaku sama wa kami sama desu” which translates to “audience is god”. He was also seen as the “national singer” as he was popular for theme songs of the 1964 Tokyo olympics and 1970 Osaka world expo.
But not everyone has a taste for rokyoku, kayorokyoku, or kayokyoku genres..... but there’s no harm in suggesting, right? 😊

MIsora Hibari did have an amazing impact on the world, but primarily on East and SE Asia. In my opinion, she was probably the most impactful popular singer in world history. I don't believe anyone else had as much influence on their native land as Misora Hibari had in Japan. No one. It is an extremely shameful thing that the West does not know her. She is known here in the West only to those willing to get off the beaten track, and look for things new. "MIsora Who???" is the usual reaction I get when talking music with people. That seems to be changing, at least a bit. She is my personal favorite popular singer. By far. She also happens to be the ONLY singer I know of that has released a brand new composition after they passed away.....um, check out Misora Hibari hologram.

There is another video with the song but they use actual concert footage of her rather than the scary hologram, yikes...
I know this song always gets played because it was her last song, but I prefer “Ai sansan” - that song always gets me emotional.

@@mochi7665 I'd be very, very interested in just which song of hers is most popular with the worlds population today. Or a Top Five,
Top Ten. Not necessarily songs original to her like Kawa No.., as I'd have to include songs like Danny Boy, Ave Maria, and Subaru in my all time favorites.

I think outside of Japan, I would say Ringo Oiwake and Makkana Taiyou, Jinsei Ichiro.
Also, check out alouette624’s channel. It’s all Misora Hibari. There is a video of her in a blue dress singing Kanashii Sake which I think is her best version. “Tsugaru no furusato” is also popular among her fans. I like the version where she is wearing a red dress.

@@mochi7665 Just viewed the Love is Over vlog. I'd seen it before, and it is indeed a great rendition of the song. Not my personal favorite, but it is definitely very well done. Another thing about MIsora HIbari: I can't think of anyone who consistently manages to pull off covers foreign language hits in her native language. Maybe Teng Teresa? Another way too early loss, for all humanity, imho. Ringo I recognize by name, the others not. I'm sure I've heard them, but Misora was so prolific, maybe not.

Thanks for posting this. I understand that "Kawa no Nagare no You ni" was voted the greatest Japanese song ever. Take a look at a translation of the lyrics, and you'll see why. Last year, Yamaha I believe, came out with an artificial intelligence presentation of Misora Hibari singing a song titled, "Are kara." It was like she was back from the dead. Her voice was spot on and gave me chills. I understand that the composer/writer of this song was the same one that wrote "Kawa no Nagare no You ni." Again, take a look at a translation of the lyrics. It's powerful and amazing!!!
