  • Well, pretty much only the Copiapoa seedlings are left now. Some things have changed over the past month. Let's see how the babies are doing.

    I’m a novice at cactus seedlings, but I have found Copiapoa to be generally more resilient than several other species. I had also found that excess light can create the purple stress… now I reduce it. So tricky trying to keep these buggers alive as a group. Attrition seems normal. The 10 month old seedlings looked good to me… probably more stable at that age.

      I also found the same - that Copiapoa seem to be more forgiving, that's what makes growing them so addictive! Although some species seem to be easier than others.
      How long have you been growing Copiapoa from seed? I'm two years in and they still surprise me both in good and bad ways.

      @@cookiescacti I started trying seeds about a 1.5 years ago with a medium assortment of seeds. I planted about 50%,then the rest after 6months. I got decent germination, but lost so many along the way due to excess light, too wet, too dry, etc. Today that batch is a mix of globular plants as many pen labels also failed in humidity. The few copiapoa i have left are about a year. About 2 months ago i made many adjustments and seeded a large batch of astrophytum hybrids with good germination. Fingers crossed on timing the humidity reductions correctly. Its all great fun and those without labels are even more intriguing as they evolve in form. I totally get the frustration of slow attrition, and joy of staring closely at the miniature forms.

    Hi, i find your results are looking fantastic! It is like in a garden, sometimes not all is growing well . Good luck with your seedlings! Nice to watch your videos, have a good time, from Martina, Germany.😊❤

    Start more Ariocarpus!!! I just ordered more seeds myself. I only have 33 seedlings of the 100 seeds that i started last fall. I hear that they are tricky to grow. That three headed Copiapoa is so nice!! :)

    I love the seedling updates, thank you! I recently sowed some Haworthia seeds for the first time and they are growing fast. Would you ever try growing other types of succulents like Haworthia or Echeveria?

    • @cookiescacti

      I'm so glad you like these seedling updates, Maria! It makes it all worth while 😊 I've had such terrible luck with soft leaf succulents besides aloe and aloe-like succulents (Gasteria, some haworthia). The colorful beautiful soft succulents just hate our summers so I'd have to bring them inside to keep them alive, which I haven't been able to manage. Someday though! The haworthia with the window leaves are so beautiful, I wish they could take our climate better

      @@cookiescacti That’s the same situation I’m facing but with Chicago winters. I have to bring everything inside and some Echeveria don’t make it, or get tall, even with grow lights. This year I bought more shelving and better grow lights to see if there’s a difference.

    Considering that the Copiapoa are growing that well, I would stick with them, rather than trying multiple genera with much different growing needs. You've already found your plants, that's my opinion. Maybe Eriosyce/Neochilenia might be a good addition in the future, as they look super pretty and grow in the same environment as Copiapoa, and at the same time take much less space.
    Speaking of Ariocarpus and Turbinicarpus, we've exchanged some comment several moths ago, where I gave you my growing tips.
    If you need more tips, I can share some information, like the substrate and watering.
    Looking at the color of your seedling I can tell that the amount of light is just fine. Some people might prefer to slightly decrease its intensity to accelerate the growth rate, but in my opinion it's totally fine as it is.
    I don't know what are the temperatures now, but the issue might be as well with the soil, watering or air moisture. The soil is probably extremely low in calcium, which might be an issue.
    It's also much easier to grow them in maximum air humidity (in bags), rather that in open pots, while keeping a stable, but not too high soil moisture.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes! You've shared a lot of very useful information with me. I think I made a major mistake with the Ariocarpus in that I should have kept them in a high humidity environment for much longer and I should have placed them outside in the heat. They shouldn't have stayed inside the house and they shouldn't have been treated the same as the Copiapoa. I'm totally separating genera next time, or at least separate by continent of origin.
      You read my mind in trying Eriosyce next! I bought some seed packs from Mesa Garden to try in my next batch of seed sowing, which I'm starting to plan...

    I have some ariocarpus all red and stressed and my friend recommended i put them back in a baggie and it really greened them up and started growing again. They seem to prefer that humid warm environment. What is your top dressing? Pumice? Hope you, Cookie, and plants are doing well with all that heat.

    • @cookiescacti
      @cookiescacti  10 місяців тому

      Thank you for the note, James! The next time I try I'm going to separate the Arios from other genuses. And I might wait until spring and start them outside so they can enjoy the heat and make sure to keep them in the high humidity environment for much longer. Luckily I have seeds from my own plants that I can experiment with!

    Are there any resources for cactus growing sites etc that you can share for a beginner?

      Before I started I watched videos from Cactus Quest, Cactus Caffeine, Desert Plants of Avalon, along with some other videos on UA-cam. Then I ran off and did it my own way (aka the lazy way) with some input from the cactus community on Instagram. There are so many methods that work well - you'll just need to try a few methods and feel out the one that gels with you the best.
