"Up for a game of chance, anyone?" - Sure, as long as I can bring my own dice. It'd be a game of who has the better loaded die. I think that would be a fun exercise. - Future video idea?
Zancoth could also be a mathematical challenge - find the best dice for a given ruleset, for example if you play Yahtzee, a die which only gives 6 does not help anything
Have you heard of the loaded dice that have three channels inside, each containing a drop of mercury? The channels are drilled in such a way that they're all at right angles to each other and parallel with lines connecting opposing corners of each die. You use them by holding the dice with the desired result uppermost and giving them a sharp tap, as one might do when making some incantation to good fortune before throwing them.
in the olden days they used to weigh loaded dice with coconut oil so you could squeeze it in your hand and melt the oil. blowing on the dice would cool it off and set the oil making it more likely to land with that side up.
Weighting one face is worse way of going about it. If you weighted the 1, it would have a vary low chance of rolling that face but all other sides would still have a high probability due to being on that pivot. But if your were to break the D + 1 rule (IE opposing sides always equal the total number of total sides plus one) and re-arrange the pips you could place the weigh in a corner and reduce it down from 5 to 3.
If you have a pair of plastic dice, you can put them in the oven on 300 degrees for about 5 minutes and they will get heavy towards the bottom as the plastic starts to become more malleable gravity pulls the plastic down.. you don't even notice the slight deformation in the dice. Just face down whatever number you want the dice to land on.
Hi Matthias. Gavin here. I'm from south Africa iv been working on a project but just can't seem to get it right. So was wondering if you could build a thickness planer to plan a 1 meter. So no one on the internet has. Thanks for all the tips. They help alot
Why not split a much bigger piece of wood, make your mods, and then glue it back together with great pressure to make the joint size as thin as possible, and finalize the size with cuts/polish so that it hides it the best?
How about first make the dice slightly taller than the final product, split it with a chisel, load it, glue it, and sand it down to final size, which also get rid of the chisel mark.
I don't understand why you wouldn't just drill it to begin wth then cover the drill mark with paint. Drill into the number holes on the side you want to weigh down, put lead in there, paint the hole over black. Seems less likely to be noticed than those split marks
The easiest way to load a dice is to drill the dots with the right size drill, lead the hole, and carefully re enstatite the dot, errm not that I have done that myself
Actually that's not a bad idea. Maybe with some precision drilling tools you could even hollow it up quite a bit if you work through the dots on the sides with many of them.
You should try steaming they spot where the knife or chisel compressed the wood to restore it. Or moisten the cut and then apply a hot iron, not too hot to burn it but just turn the water to steam.
You could also get plastic dice and bake them slightly. Just enough to loosen the plastic so it flows down internally, but not enough to deform the dice. Won't get you as extreme of results, but then that also means you're less likely to get caught cheating.
I've tried that before. The challenge with that is you can't get enough weight added through them to offset the center of gravity. Also when adding the lead, the surface tension doesn't go into the holes very well.
unfortunately casino dice are clear and made with polymethyl methacrylate to stop people switching out loaded dice. Whilst loading a clear die is possible, it's difficult and the bias is usually only very slight.
@Maxx B, instead they make subtle differences to the Dice itself. For example, it being one Millimetre thicker on the lower end of the dice compared to the higher end. Very hard to notice yet can yield more result toward the lower portion. Yet not Obvious. Or they use a paint that might be slightly Heavier compared to the other paint, yet same colour under the Light of the play tables. One can make many subtle differences to cheat Gamblers without them noticing.
Why not drill out the holes? I you drill out the 1 and the lowest pip on each face, with the 6 uppermost, then fill with solder or lead shot and glue. You can then seal the holes over with some filler to create the same dimple as the other pips. Now you have a weighted die without split marks.
Why not start with a blank cube? Cut it open, hollow it and weight it as you please, and glue it back together. Sand all the faces perfectly smooth, drill the pip marks, then *paint* the die (say, black) and fill in the pips with a contrasting color (say, white). Then the only way anyone would ever know it was loaded was by the uneven weight of it in their hand.
Here I expected Matthias to get several working versions, and figure out the right solder-to-empty space ratio to get a rolling distribution he likes (50% sixes, 30% fives, etc.). Matthias, how would you improve your idea and analyze it for efficiency and optimization?
So many dislikes? I thought this was interesting! Ha ha, I think you have a line up of safety ninnies who are upset with you for being demeaning Matthias! (AND, btw... that dice could have ricocheted off the wall and taken out your eye)!
nicely done. a fast project for a quick UA-cam post ;) the break line on the painted cube is visible. now u have show us, how to hide it. we don't want to be caught. ;)
Or just drill out the "one," put some lead in the hole, and paint over it. If that isn't weighted enough, you can do the same for the lower "pips" on the adjacent sides. No splitting and hollowing bullshit.
Step 1: Go to psychologist. Step 2: Mention hot hand fallacy and regression to the mean, ask them to show you by example. Step 3: "LOOK WHAT'S THAT!" Swap dice. Step 4: Wait and try not to smile.
This is what happens when ad revenues drop... UA-camrs turn to a life of crime....

Dufffaaa93 to make dice
so everything not taxed yet is 'crime'?
The secret ingredient is crime
"Up for a game of chance, anyone?" -
Sure, as long as I can bring my own dice.
It'd be a game of who has the better loaded die.
I think that would be a fun exercise. - Future video idea?
Wonder what John's Heisz weighted dice look like? I think we're about to see another video on I Build It.ca
:D
Was just thinking if there's a "loaded dice off", it's gonna be between Matthias and John xD
Zancoth could also be a mathematical challenge - find the best dice for a given ruleset, for example if you play Yahtzee, a die which only gives 6 does not help anything
OK, I'm bringing dice that have 6 on every side.
I hadn't realized dice is the plural of die, always thought it's one dice, two dice. Thanks Matthias!

That might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Let me check.........Oh, the moon being made out of green cheese beat you. Sorry.
alex tworkowski yeah but it is an interesting idea. Coconut oil melts at 72 F, it might sorta work. There might be a better material for it though
pfff... what do YOU think the moon is made of?!
Which moon? Depends on which dumpster it's salvaged from...

You can use wood dust with glue to close any gap.
If you take the finish off the apply a new one, it may further reduce the appearance of the split line.

Loser!

Pumpkins taste good
you misspelt "winner"
Jose Ramirez you have to be a child right?
Note to self: Nevar gamble with a master woodworker/engineer.
Drill out the pips and fill them with something light and paint over them. More pips = more material removed = more likely to end face up.
You never thought that drilling out the dots/holes would be easier?
Weighting one face is worse way of going about it. If you weighted the 1, it would have a vary low chance of rolling that face but all other sides would still have a high probability due to being on that pivot. But if your were to break the D + 1 rule (IE opposing sides always equal the total number of total sides plus one) and re-arrange the pips you could place the weigh in a corner and reduce it down from 5 to 3.
I did in fact place the weight towards a corner. Please do watch the video.
If you have a pair of plastic dice, you can put them in the oven on 300 degrees for about 5 minutes and they will get heavy towards the bottom as the plastic starts to become more malleable gravity pulls the plastic down.. you don't even notice the slight deformation in the dice. You're so funny....taking all this time to make a loaded dice set!!!!~ Thanks for sharing. And don't ask to play any dice games with me, ha, ha!
Have you tried using a verry thin saw to cut it open diagonally? Or not through a face?
Maybe the weight was further from 5 than from 4 and (obviously) 6 so every time the die was about to land on 5, it tilted over to 4 or 6 instead
Hi Matthias.
Gavin here.

Welcome to the Monte Carlo Simulations

Why not split a much bigger piece of wood, make your mods, and then glue it back together with great pressure to make the joint size as thin as possible, and finalize the size with cuts/polish so that it hides it the best?
Would it not be easier/faster to drill out the dots and fill behind them? This way its a natural defect
Feather fill could also work pretty nicely for this.
Another fun one, I like these!
Why not just make it slightly oversized, split it then cut it down to size?
because I started with a die that I didn't make
How about first make the dice slightly taller than the final product, split it with a chisel, load it, glue it, and sand it down to final size, which also get rid of the chisel mark.
I didn't make the dice. The rounded shape is not easy to make (it's a sphere with six flat sides)
Why not sand and re-finish the dice with a dark varnish? That would hide the crack.
maybe drill out the pips and place weights on them ?
I don't understand why you wouldn't just drill it to begin wth then cover the drill mark with paint. Drill into the number holes on the side you want to weigh down, put lead in there, paint the hole over black. Seems less likely to be noticed than those split marks
The easiest way to load a dice is to drill the dots with the right size drill, lead the hole, and carefully re enstatite the dot, errm not that I have done that myself
Never play a board game with Matthias
That’s why u don’t go to casinos
I can pay my rent now
You should have done it with your giant dice
Are you like an engineer or something
Fill the crack with some stainable wood filler and re-stain the dice
What about bone dice?
Thanks for the smile
I don’t get it, why don’t you just make it out of fresh wood blanks?
And why not fix the old one?
YOUR LOADED
1:17 THAT'S A LOT OF DAMAGE
Attention!
No dices were harmed during the video,
You made a bad die Petey.
How about plastic dice like chessex dice??
No Yahtzee playing with you and your dice ...lol,wouldnt it be easier to just drill out the opposite side in the dots of the dice and weight them
Thats cool
You should work at a casino.
How to win in Vegas 101
Weight a coin so it lands on heads
Seems like you could just take the knife trick one step further and split it with a utility knife blade.
Maybe drilling a 2mm hole trough black dot(number one) and then put a nail in it, fill it with wood filler and paint it black again.
I think bird shot is right about that size and it's lead....or used to be. Maybe it's gotta be heavier.
I like your thinking.
yeah, that's how i figured it's done, either a nail or some melted lead... fill it, repaint it...
Actually that's not a bad idea. Maybe with some precision drilling tools you could even hollow it up quite a bit if you work through the dots on the sides with many of them.
Came here to say the same. Could drill out all holes on the 6 side so requires less added weight per hole too.
You should try steaming they spot where the knife or chisel compressed the wood to restore it. Or moisten the cut and then apply a hot iron, not too hot to burn it but just turn the water to steam.
That is the best option by far
Hahah im never playing boardgames at your house! Unless im on your team xD

You could also get plastic dice and bake them slightly. Just enough to loosen the plastic so it flows down internally, but not enough to deform the dice. Won't get you as extreme of results, but then that also means you're less likely to get caught cheating.
How about drilling through one of the pips?
I just had the same thought.
sounds like a good idea... drill out all 6 dots and weight them then top them off with some wood putty and little artistic touch
Gladys Knight would not like that.

Whilst loading a clear die is possible, it's difficult and the bias is usually only very slight.
lol, no need for dice games when he could just count cards.
No dice!

Александр ForestLamp How is this cheating? Technically, custom bowling ball uses the SAME fill to do curls and straights.
Hopefully next week Matthias won't have a black eye.
No, next week he'll have a broken arm and two black eyes as a consequence of testing the newly made dice.
"Is this a game of chance?"
"Not the way I play it, no."
Why not drill out the holes? I you drill out the 1 and the lowest pip on each face, with the 6 uppermost, then fill with solder or lead shot and glue. You can then seal the holes over with some filler to create the same dimple as the other pips. Now you have a weighted die without split marks.
Damnit, everyone had the same idea lol.
Are you referring to lead shot balls ?
wouldnt it have been better to make dice a bit bigger thn you wanted then split it, glue it back up and sand it down to size?
That's what I was thinking as well.
Probably needs to be indistinguishable from other existing dice.
muddbogginredneck
you have all the answers, don't you?
Glue a strip of end grain on one face with hide glue, split and remove the glue up with water.
Why not cracking it with a point on the center hole of the 5? later you refill the broken hole and no one will be able to see it
Keep your dice in vice!
Matthias hasn't got no time for this
One only has to hold the die by two points and spin Every side always goes down.
And that's why casino dice are transparent.

I always assumed that they loaded dice by epoxying bird shot under the dots.
Time to take this to the casino, who's coming with me?
If you try the chisel method on an over-sized length of stock, you can probably cut off the chisel mark and make a die with the remaining stock.
I remember when I unsubscribed. I don't know why I did it

Make a big dice with a mechanism in it that you can activate or deactivate (somehow) to load and unload the dice. Then miniaturize. Profit! XD
strange that you used regular glue and not wood glue filler which would have filled the crack to hide the cut.

Usually you make loaded dies by drilling out one of the pips and adding the weight there opposite the face you want to come up. No need to split.
