  • Harlan demonstrates how to make through dovetails with the Keller Dovetail Jig. What makes this demo different than others you may find on UA-cam is that these dovetails are cut on an angle so when all four sides are assembled the top of the box opening is larger than the box base. ( \___/ )

I realize this is five years old, but just wanted to say thanks. I got my Keller jig off eBay, and first try made a perfect dovetailed box.

I have this exact jig and can’t get it to work at all. Constantly destroying the wood and chipping it really bad. Are dovetail joints only ment to be on the ends of boards and not on all 4 sides of one board?? Only thing I’m getting from this jig is ruined wood. Also had to add a spacer because it won’t allow the bits to cut all the way there if there isn’t one.
Wish you would go into more detail with this jig and how to setup it up

What bit numbers are you using for this?? I have this same jig but the pins and tails do not go together at all. They are too big. I have bit #33/#43 and also #31/#41. Regular stock and smaller stock bits. NONE OF IT goes together, not even close!

Nice demo. Doesn't that festool router come with excellent dust collection?

Thanks Don, , , Keller jigs has 5 models, depending on the type of project you want to work with. Generally speaking material thicknesses range from 1/8" to 1", 3/8" to 1"+, and 1/2" to 1 1/4"+. Lengths range from 15" - 36". Is this the 1601 or the 2401? I'm looking to do some 1ft cubes for toys and some book shelving and was thinking about using sliding dovetails for the book case but wasn't sure what size dovetail bit. Was hoping to kill two birds with one stone in purchasing a Keller but wasn't sure what size would be best.

Thanks Drew for checking out our demo video series. This was the 1601 that Harlan used. An amazing system the Keller. Either one you can index to make longer pins and tails. We have a sample corner section that is 4 feet long (and was done with Baltic Birch plywood).

Is it possible to do half blind dovetails with the keller jig?

gary24752 Gary, unfortunately not. It is designed to be an ultra simple approach to doing though dovetails, on as long of an edge as you want. We have done a 4 foot long dovetail using Baltic Birch Ply. Thanks for taking the time to watch our demos!

gary24752 Gary. I strip off a thin slice of wood from a drawer front, and then cut the dovetails with the jig. All I do then is glue back the slice, and clean up. You need to finish the drawer front to dead size and thickness to allow for the thickness of the 'veneer' you take off. Hope that helps.
