wow I resonate with this so much! I do this all the time. The “my mom/other doctor/friend suggested” is a very common one for me. It’s so insulting that we have to play dumb. Although I’m not in the medical field, I’m trained in research and like you, I read journals to learn about my conditions. And my theories have almost always been correct. Sometimes I feel bad, like I’m manipulating, but it is the only way I can get adequate care.
At times, the doctors have been so unwilling to listen that I had to have my mom advocate for me. I was told I was anxious, faking, wanting attention. But when she communicated for me, suddenly all my concerns were taken seriously. I would brief her before appointments, they were literally all my own thoughts, just through a different voice.
It’s hard to trust doctors because of this. The ones I do are those who listen to my concerns and take my suggestions seriously. They’ll ask my input, ask what I think is happening because they understand that I am smart and intuitive enough to understand my own body. I appreciate them so much. But such good doctors are so hard to find.
I think there is a layer of misogyny in this phenomenon. Although I’m sure it happens, I’ve never heard of a man in this situation. Coincidentally all my current doctors are women.

Thank you so much for sharing. I am sorry you also have had to endure this. But, I am so glad you have found ways to get medical care. That is wonderful your mom has been able to advocate for you. What a great mom! I am happy you have been able to find doctors who will listen. I hope in the future, you have only good doctors who listen to you. All my best to you.

I also have to do this. I’m sorry I cannot type a proper long response due to neurological issues, but I wanted to tell you I understand and you’re not alone. 💜

Yep it's so very frustrating that I have to learn how to "work the system" just to get a doctor to "kind of" listen to me and run tests. I'm not in the medical field but have had systemic issues for 20 years. I was medically gaslit and victim of gatekeeping / still am honestly. Literally everything I AM currently diagnosed with...would never have been mentioned if I hadn't researched myself...and never would have been tested for. I was told that I "couldn't possibly have it" ....then I FINALLY get the test done...and I do have it. It's also really frustrating...when I have a "specialist" tell me something I know for a fact is wrong and out-dated. But no matter how I phrase it....they just will double down and start with intimidation / bully tactics. So, I keep paying money, keep bouncing from doc to doc....

I'm so sorry for how poorly youve been treated just because you have a medical background! I didn't realize until now how lucky I am, but I've had the complete opposite experience since starting med school (I'm about to start M3 year). Physicians have treated me totally differently, but in a great way - they ask for my input and take my symptoms more seriously than before. Maybe it's because I was diagnosed with my autoimmune disease quite a few years prior to medical school, instead of developing the symptoms after I had more medical knowledge? Regardless of the reason, how frustrating. I'm glad you've found a way to get proper care but I'm so sorry that this is how! 😟

Thank you for sharing. Congrats!!! I hope everything goes well for you! I am so excited for you!
I am glad doctors have wanted your input. That is fantastic! It sounds like you have great doctors. I think you are probably right. Since you were diagnosed before medical school, you had a diagnosis before gaining more medical knowledge. Thank you for all the support. All my very best to you!

I agree so much I was a nurse( and he knows that)and went to doctors twice for headaches and is still brushing me of and gaslighting me. I am so frustrated with them what should I do? I agree i do put as a call it a “face” to show I am well but it is all honesty that is just a front. It is so annoying been dismissed.?

Beyond frustrating isn't it. I have given up on GPs in my town as their main job is gate keeping and saving money for the health system and I ultimately have to telehealth at my cost. I have a health science degree and they are the ones pretending they don't know things to avoid having to do anything. Because they do this with other people, they probably do lose some of the knowledge they gained in med school as they are too lazy to put it in to practice. I'm in NZ which has a no fault legal system so doctors have no responsibilities or obligations to help and cannot be sued for errors whether accidental or intentional. Australia wants to bring in the same law.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope you find the medical care you need. I did not know there was such a thing as a no fault legal system for doctors. Thank you for sharing. I am happy you have a health science degree as I know that is helping you as you wade through the healthcare system.

I’ve been in the ER 5 times in 3 months for chronic chest, rib, and back pain. I have a variety of health issues. My last ER visit was last week. When first meeting with the ER Dr., I explained that one of the medications I take is birth control for estrogen after having an emergency hysterectomy 5 years ago. I then stated to 2 different nurses that they don’t need to do a pregnancy test on me as I had a radical hysterectomy and that I don’t need a pregnancy test. I’m having chest pain. 5 hours later the nurse came in and said, “Well you’re not pregnant” after making me pee in a cup anyway. I said how can you take me serious if I can’t take you guys seriously. Praying for answers. 3 months of zero relief, but the good news is I am not pregnant. 🤦🏼‍♀️

yes and never ever say you googled it.. they get so twisted up about 'Dr Google'. I am an MRI tech and I see things all day long and talk to patients about their symptoms and conditions. I know probably better than most ER doctors what the test will show before I even start the scan. But I play dumb when I go. just like when buying a car, if you ever worked in the industry ( I did before I went to college) never let them know you are on to their stupid sales games.

I just learned the hard way to not hand the Dr. a JAMA study. Apparently doing my own research from accredited sources is a step too far, I’m supposed to just take their word and not participate in my own healthcare.

I have the opposite problem... every doctor thinks I have heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cancer just because family members did. Even though all my blood work comes back normal, doctors want to put me on all kinds of medications simply because I have family that had diseases.

    • @anniesshenanigans3815

go to a dr enough times and they will find something to treat you for.. like the old barbershop saying... "go to a barbershop enough times and you will eventually get a haircut". I stay away from them. If it hurts when I do 'that' I just don't do 'that'.

@ad6417 I am sorry doctors think you have medical conditions and want to put you on all kinds of medications based on your family history. I cannot imagine how frustrating that must be.

@anniesshenanigans3815 I also stay away from doctors as much as I can. I only go when I have an urgent need (for example I have pneumonia), or I need paperwork signed for my insurance.

I have had a stiff neck for over a year and the only way I can breath properly is to take certain medications, I've asked for spinal taps but they won't give me one or order tests to test for meningitis.
