Re-released and debut 5/17/1969.
Peaked at #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.
This is the original VERY Short, heavily edited single mix that clocks in at only 2:52, which is just shy of the 3 minute glass ceiling that was a maximum limit on length due to radio program director requirements of the time for short records that maximized record play on the Top 40 radio stations of the day.
The original album featured this song in it's full 17 minute glory, which took up the entire side of the LP!
This is the original mono mix as heard when this was a hit on AM Top 40 radio on stations like WABC New York.

VERY short edit version for the AM radio band...VERY short as compared to the 17 minute full-length album versions..
Our local rock station played the long version last sunday morning-it was awesome to hear it again.
This is when you asked a girl to slow dance when the long version played. Yup Boomer music rules and I’m glad I was part of it.

I was listening to the full 17-minute long version about 20 minutes ago;listening to the 22 minute long "Get Ready"(Rare Earth) right now.:) Both are interesting reverse cases of the LP being superioir (but so long that, well, who's got time to play it all on most stations:))
Remember when they played this song in church on The Simpsons? "17 minues later.." LOL

Yes, that's largely true, there was still quite a bit of mono until 1972 as far as 45s went. They largely stopped making mono albums after 1968.

I am aware of four separate versions: 1, the originL radio edit (this one); 2, the longer radio edit, about 5-1/2 minutes; 3, the live extended version, approximately 15-1/2 minutes; and 4, the extended studio version, approximately 17 minutes.

What was the song on side the B of the Atco 45? I remember I really liked it a lot. Very upbeat, happy sound compared to In A Gadda Da Vida. Yet still very psychedelic.
The b-side was an instrumental, "Iron Butterfly Theme"-- the final track from "Heavy", Iron Butterfly's debut album.
Kind of a goofy song but ya gotta like it.
