Shrinking the collection down by 200-300...quite the difficult task! So cool you were able to visit Dylan's store! Bo recently gave me two of his Soft Machine records for some reason. What a treat that first one is to listen to! I love that X album. It's an underrated one. Very cool Sonic Youth pickup! Incredible pressing of that Daft Punk LP! Iconic! Eclectic mix of finds in the style of Mr. Steve Carlson - love it! And you end with a Stereolab LP. Wonderful! Take care.
Dillon’s store is like 10 minutes from my house. Which is trouble. 😬 I haven’t spun the X album yet, but am glad to see you give it such a ringing endorsement. Thanks for hanging out, Hanna. I’m very much looking forward to your road trip video. ✌🏻
@@TheDigitalGramophone The same people who regret trading all their vinyl will regret trading all their cd's. Many of the bonus tracks on CDs are not on vinyl. Never will be & in the car , a 💿 player is still imperative as are good discs. Be selective.
David Ellis I still have somewhere between 600-700 CDs still left. Anything with deluxe bonus tracks, extensive liner notes, etc. is staying in my collection. After that, anything that I already own on vinyl is going or has already been traded. Streaming audio quality is much better than most folks around the VC give it credit. That being said, it’s all about your stereo more than it is the format.
@@TheDigitalGramophone Yes , an example The Glove " Blue Sunshine " Double CD , disc 2 has Robert Smith vocals. Can't get those on LP. Good move to keep !
Dave is definitely an enabler. A lot of my recent pickups are solely because of him. The Soft Machine, nice! I'm a sucker for solo McCartney. Not all of it's great but there is enjoyable music in most of his releases. I haven't picked it up yet but have been wanting the Tinariwen when I first saw Steve Carlson show it. I'll be hunting for Fela in 2020. I only have digital and the Ginger Baker in Africa dvd that features him. I hope you're not too busy when I come to town in late spring/early summer timeframe.
Enabler? I am an amateur enabler. Now Scott at Lunchbox texting me, messaging me on Facebook anytime something comes in. That is professional enabling. Like a Russian hack providing a clean hooker instead of installing a virus.
I saw Scott at Lunchbox in action working his Black Magic on Dave. I see him do it quite often with other regulars. Can't wait to see what Fela albums you start picking up, Bill. I'm sure Dave and I will be consulted via text. I will always make time to hang out when you're in town. As long as I'm in town. Just let me know with as much advance as you can.
How dare you speak ill of the sacred Hall & Oats? JK. I’m here for that. Totally agree about McCartney solo stuff. The Soft Machine is a great pull. Thanks for the trades, I always need em!
I need to make it out east to go digging with you and Dave, it sounds like a blast! Nice pickups on the Tinariwen and Ebo Taylor, he's got some really cool stuff in his catalog! I've been so busy with work travel and I have a list of videos a mile long I want to make, and then you come on here with valid adult responsibilities that keep you busy, makes me feel like a slouch! I'm trying to dial down my collection by about 1000 records, and I made some good headway this past week and sold two 45s. Then I added 12 more LPs. I'm doing it wrong.
Catching up on my responses... you’ll see another one on my other video. I don’t know if any responsibilities are any more valid than others. I’m just fortunate to be able to find the time I can to record videos. It would be awesome if we could meet up for a dig one day. I would love just sitting there listening to you and Dave chew the fat about reggae. Hope you’re doing well, bud, and can’t wait to see your next vid. ✌🏻
Hi Jon. Oh wow!!! Link Wray!!! The only things I have are his two collaborations with Robert Gordon. He was raised about 15 miles from me here in Harnett County! With two children you are fortunate to be able to get out record digging at all. If they aren't already that old, wait til they start playing ball, taking music lessons etc. Good parenting becomes 80% driving and time management!!!! Great finds, great info on this video, really enjoyed. take care-Elliott
Love Link Wray. I know he was born in Dunn. I went to a wedding in Clanton a couple of years ago and we stayed at a hotel in Dunn. Not a lot going on there. Haha I'm hoping that records and record stores become a shared activity with me and the kids. My four year-old, Sam, is already a music junkie. I've brainwashed him well. We watch videos of live performances on UA-cam every night at bedtime. He loves it, and I'm enjoying every second of it because you never know if/when he'll tire of it.
@@TheDigitalGramophone That is great! My daughter was / is a violinist and one of my most cherished roles while she was growing up was being her roadie for all those lessons, recitals, concerts, etc. :>)
That story about Dave is just too funny. For whatever reason, I could see him doing that. I'm with you on the McCartney comment by the way. The solo careers of the Beatles are never an equal to the band altogether.
I’ve never considered myself a strong storyteller, so I’m glad to hear I painted an appropriate portrait of Dave in a record store. I didn’t spark as much controversy as I originally thought regarding Paul’s solo work. And so true about the band as a whole. Yet, it was when I dove into his solo work, when I officially recognized George as my favorite Beatle. 😁 Thanks for hanging out, Paul. Great to hear from you! Cheers! ✌🏻
I was hoping this was a Barnes & Noble video. Kind of disappointed but I’m still watching. I have a billion CDs, I should probably sell mine but I can’t. It sounds too dangerous to shop with Dave. I have not seen that Sonic Youth album, very cool. How could you not remember my Tinarwen episode, I am crushed, absolutely crushed. All their albums are great, you won’t go wrong. I watch Watchmen too, I know the song your talking about. Witch is a favorite group. Showed it in my channel but you probably forgot again. Fela Kuti has a ton of reissues, incredible stuff. I showed a lot of Fela on my channel also, just a FYI, ton more to come lol. I don’t have Lukombo Vibes, I’m liking the sound of it. Great finds, lot of music with groove.
See, Steve. You buy like 10 new albums a week, minimum. How are any of us supposed to keep track? You probably showed Witch before I joined the VC. But, even if you did show it. I probably have forgotten. Fela is the man. Most people's introduction to Afro-beat. I have several of the reissues. I wish I was more on top of those box sets as they were coming out. The first three sold out so fast, though. I think the 4th one is still widely available because they produced more of them this go round. I knew you'd like this video. Cheers, buddy!
The Digital Gramophone , John was those Fela box sets full albums or 45s, the description was iffy. I was going to buy the last one but waited a week and Amazon sold out. I have about 5 Kuti to show, it will be a cutie Kuti special in a week or so. I only buy 8 albums a week and am cutting back , kind of sort of.
Those Fela box sets are all full albums. Might include some 45s, but to my knowledge... full albums. All of them curated by a musical artist - Questlove, Ginger Baker, Erykah Badu, can’t remember the other one. They go for a million dollars a piece now. Which is a shame.
Hi Jon .. funny end to the video .. I do watch videos where guys say “hit the subscribe button” 🤔🙈.. we’ve spoke about the doves before I don’t have any vinyl by them I don’t want vinyl and cds by bands unless I can find a bargain .. love the doves though I did find a jim Goodwin( lead singer ) solo album last year which I need to play more. Sorry jon this comment is from your most recent video .. at the end the video then went into this one 🙈.. at least this proves I watch your videos till the end👍
So if we ever meet and go digging, I guess I gotta show you all the records you need to buy? You seem to be in to having personal shoppers along for the ride. On vinyl I only have Abandoned Luncheonette left from Hall & Oats. A great album before their RCA hit years. She's Gone..... just like your H&O records.
You're starting to become quite the tease with the other fellas here in NC. Dave, especially, is expecting you to make a trip out here. Dillon, Chris and Dave. These guys are fragile creatures. Be careful, Mazzy. You're going to break their hearts. I can't go for that. No can do.
Damn I didn’t realize the Cohen you grabbed was a promo. Sweet. First copy of Murray Street I have seen anywhere. I need to pick up Lukombo Vibes. Stoked you dig the Ebo Taylor. The German players on there are pro. I tried to put that Betty Davis reissue in bro’s hands. He didn’t take it. There is no hope for that dude. None.
Flaming Pie is getting a rerelease this year so now you should feel bad for those guys paying mint prices for it. So by my math, you traded in 20-30 albums but you came home with 20- 30 albums. I can see how that collection is going to take two years to shrink. Don't worry I'm in the same universe. Some great pick ups. Cheers Edwin
Very excited to hear about the Flaming Pie reissue. It's a great Paul album. Jeff Kempin got his original for under $10 if memory serves correctly. Your math is off. Hahaha! I traded in about 35-40 albums and came home with 16. That's progress! But, your comment is totally accepted for the humor alone. I know we're all in the same universe. Thanks for hanging out, Edwin. Cheers!
You're going to regret selling those CD's when the CD revival hits just as your kids are getting ready to pay for college. I love that Soft Machine record and I probably rate Death of a Ladies Man higher than some. You've inspired me to do an Essential 25 Hall & Oates deep album cuts video. Original copy of Homework is delicious. Gotta love rolling with free dough. I remember Steve showing that Tinariwen. He will probably hold that against you for years. I like that Black Monument Ensemble. I think those Stereolab reissues are the best sounding versions you can get. I look forward to seeing which of the many versions of Vinyl Tag you choose to go with. Cheers!
Steve has already given me grief. See my response. Getting rid of those CDs was quite therapeutic. Feels good. I’m going to give Death of a Ladies Man more of a chance now that I own it. I think you should do a Vinyl Tag with all Hall & Oates albums.
It’s really too bad you let Steve down like that. I know he’s going to be hurt for quite some time. Vinyl Tag featuring all Hall & Oates would be very tasty indeed.

Hey Jon I never got into Soft Machine, but Kevin Ayers solo stuff I really like.McCartney is VERY hit and miss but I think he gets a little too lambasted and sometimes unfairly. Ram, Band on the Run, Red Rose , Venus and Mars, Tug of War, McCartney, McCartneyII , Chaos and creation in the back yard..all these are pretty solid albums imho, but hey, music is subjective, so everyone's opinion counts!.Like your digging tales , I subbed your channel and look forward to future videos.Rob from the UK.😉
Hi Jon - you probably made a good Hall and Oates call...greatest hits should do it. Congratulations on Soft Machine - I have that record (re-press.) Sounds like the trip with localbandography was a lot of fun. I've gotten several records (about 5?) based on Dave's reviews/recommendations. Black Monument Ensemble sounds interesting from your description. Thanks for the update! ~ Randy
I love Digging with Dave! We have a good time. He's an enabler, but I do okay. Other financial responsibilities win out by default. There's a video of a Black Monument Ensemble performance. I'd check that out and see what you think. Always a pleasure to hear from you, Randy. Cheers!
Jeff Kempin I did not diss Hall & Oates. I merely said that their greatest hits collection is all I need. You need to direct your attention to Grandma’s Handbag. 😆. Thanks for checking in, buddy.
Hi Jon .. I’m trying to be more focused this year but I’ve already failed 🤔... there’s not much new albums being released at the moment .. things are so band I’m buying pink Floyd albums .. I’m not a prog guy .. but I’ve found myself owning a load of genesis albums .. £2 each I thought I’d give them a try .. annoyingly I quite like them 🤔.. hall and Oates albums Everyone has that hits album I know I do 🙃! I’m very selective on McCartney.. overrated you’re not kidding .. 2 decent albums in 40 years isn’t anything to be proud of ..
Sorry jon I commented to early .. I don’t have any sonic youth on vinyl .. daft punk I’m a fan 👍... I’m keeping my CDs .. you don’t get much for second hand ones in the uk .. you got a great deal on those CDs though .. Dave sounds fun 🙈... talking to strangers in record stores is part of the fun .. oh I remember Steve showing that album .. witch I’ll check them out jon .. I’ve watched some of watchman.. I need to find time for it .. 2 cheese burgers! 🤔..😀... love your rambling Jon .. which sterolab album do you think I’d like ? Great video jon .. hope to see more in 2020 👍
Catching up on responses... I’m so happy to hear you are buying Pink Floyd. You’ll be a big fan in no time. I like early Genesis. Not enough to make it a priority, though. I’m glad to see my McCartney take is getting so much confirmation. Even from Mazzy. I hope you don’t think I had 2 cheeseburgers all to myself. 😂🤣😂 I was saying collectively amongst me and Dave. Just knowing you enjoy my rambling makes me less self-conscious about it. Always great to hear from you, Rob. Cheers! ✌🏻
Uuuhhh...Where were we? Very interesting preamble about dreaming of downsizing/culling. Softs 1&2 is where I'm at as well, gets a bit too beardstrokey after that. Beautiful copy. I'm saving Lenny until I'm light enough, or deep enough. Nice SY score, and a very tidy Daft Punk to boot. Very glad you finally got some credit for those gorgeous cds you had. Were you happy with that amount? Hahaha I love your recounting of Dave the vinyl pusher🤣genuine warmth in that :) but it sounds like a fantastic dig with musical ideas and conversations zinging around. I vaguely remember you talking about Witch or Fela before with Steve Carlson? Anyway, i am totally with you on that Ebo Taylor back cover, that hits my 'buy' criteria. That Black Monument Ensemble looks Important, Significant. You've piqued my interest. "I won't apologise for buying good music" - if you ever go into merch.... just saying... great to see you back Jon, even better that a tag video is imminent! Oh yeah, nice Stereolab👍
Dave is dangerous, Dean! Look at the alliteration in that comment. Splendid. We have a great time when we meet up. Very glad to have met him. We actually owe it all to Bill (Vinylverse) and he doesn't even live here. Ha Steve is giving me hell for not remembering when he showed Tinariwen. I guess I deserve it, but anyway... check my response to him. I'm sure we'll get into a conversation at some point about my semi-purge. Vinyl Tag will hopefully be up by the weekend. It looks like Vinyl Richie did ANOTHER version?!
What's up buddy! Maybe I need to become a dad so I don't have as much time or $$ to spend record shopping haha. #dadlifeI've been going through multiple big cleansing/purging phases over the past 6 months or so as well just clearing out all the unnecessary records and records rough shape. It's a great and rewarding process though knowing that in the end, it'll be a highly curated vinyl collection and all of the "filler" has been weeded through. You own 1 Hall & Oates album, which is 1 more than me lol. Really awesome that you got to hook up w/ Dave and check out the killer score of Dillon's.....nice Soft Machine. That Link Wray Some Kinda Nut looks awesome! I remember Steve Carlson showing that Amadjar album and it's quite intriguing. Best to you my friend, best!
Haha! That's a bad reason to become a dad, Chris. But, I get it. Parenting affects your life in so many ways aside from record collecting. Unless you have a ton of cash. I don't know if my collection will be as valuable when it's all said and done. But, I do know it will represent me and what's important to me. Nothing wrong with a little Hall & Oates. They were the blue-eyed soul of the 1980s. Well, them and Huey Lewis & the News. Dave and I will be hanging out more often for sure. Charlotte, NC is representing in the VC. I love Link Wray and will eventually be doing a video spotlighting him as part of my NC music series. Thanks for hanging out, Chris. Cheers!
Oh and you'll never offend me by dissing some Macca records. Even though I'm a total Beatles solo completist, I know most of his records are mediocre, but every one has several wonderful tracks.... Still I enjoy them for what they are. The guy has some talent.
Thanks for the video -very enjoyable. But McCartney solo stuff over-rated? I avoided it for years because everything I read said it was awful (this was in the pre-streaming years). But I enjoy almost everything. Even 'Off The Ground'!
I always followed you on Instagram but never on here...don't know why. Nice stuff found digging with Dave. I try to pick up Cohen when I see it which is seldom. Very nice Soft Machine pickup as well. Sonic Youth is something I never see in the wild. A lot of people have been showing that Tinariwen album lately. Take care.
Hey Chris. Yeah, I watch your videos. I don't comment much, if at all, because I see so many of your posts on Instagram. I do the same thing with Andrew now because he's posting so frequently on Instagram. You won't find many first pressings over here, but I'm happy if you find anything of value.
Cheers!
Dissing Hall and Oates? GOOD DAY, SIR!
Jeff Kempin I did not diss Hall & Oates. I merely said that their greatest hits collection is all I need. You need to direct your attention to Grandma’s Handbag. 😆. Thanks for checking in, buddy.
@@TheDigitalGramophone darn it, my haughty British air was unfounded. Lol.
Thanks for hanging out! Cheers!
Portland Maine or Portland Oregon?

@@TheDigitalGramophone She must really love you. None of my sisters would go 5 miles to visit me!
@@garytibbs4196 Haha! We're lucky if we see her twice a year.
You like Hall and Oates? Unsu.... oh wait, they're a 'greatest hits album' band... let's just forget this moment happened, on both sides😬
Grandma's Handbag Rock ‘N’ Soul Part 1 is a must-own record. There. I said it.
