about a year ago I asked you about Axe FX vs Real Amps for gigging.. and you said (paraphrased) there was no going back to real amps for you.. It's really hard to argue with the convenience and tones that you get all in one Axe FX package.. especially with the Atomics for your stage sound.. thanks Burgs for your channel.. always a pleasure on our end.
Good on you, Bobby. Thanks for stopping by to share the love once again. Yep, I still stand by that statement. Although you've got to tweak for every different show - a bit like an amp, I guess - the convenience and tonal choices make the AX8 a no-brainer for me. Cheers, mate.
@@BrettKingman that is the same direction I am headed. Tube amps sound great but are super EXPENSIVE and HEAVY and lack volume control as well as recording ease that the Fractal and Kemper units provide.
Hi Brett I just stumbled onto your channel and after hearing your tones I’m now a subscriber. I want to thank you for sharing your patches, theses are without a doubt some of the best tones I’ve heard from the ax8 (and playing of course). Thanks again kind sir for the free upload.
Brett, I owned an Albert Lee and downloaded your preset with much anticipation. I felt I wasn't getting what I wanted out of my AX8 and hoped this would get me closer. As it turns out, my AL was stolen the day after I loaded the patch and I never got to hear them paired. I was forced to go to my backup guitar for my next gig and really did not know how anything was going to sound, so I decided to try your preset (untested). I plugged in, sound checked and really liked the variety of tones I was getting. A few tweaks here and there and this now my main live patch. Thank you for helping me move on from the AL and discover new tones and new joy. CHEERS!
That's a sad story with a happier ending. I hope the thief gets their just deserts! Glad to be of service and thank you for writing. All the best. Cheers to you, Sir!

Hi Brett, Thanks for this video. I play in an Aussie Crawl and Dragon tribute in Qld (April Sons of Beaches) and after hearing your sounds with James at The Shed on the sunny coast it convinced me it was time to go to an AxeFx II and it’s possibly the best move I’ve made.

Hi Brett, I have that exact same Ibanez Talman that I have had since 1996. I have eight electric guitars and three acoustics but this is the one guitar I wouldn't ever let go. It sits at arm distance from my bed at all times and it has an old friend feel to it (It felt like that day one). When I use it live I have to use a boost or eq directly behind it. It would be nice to here you share how you use it.
I am saving up for this unit it would be perfect all in one home studio tool and live rig in small package. Now only if Fractal Audio would put a color LCD screen on it!
I'll say this: I LOVE my Mesa Mark V and Fender Twin Reverb. Absolutely LOVE THEM. BUT ... it's a bitch to tour and gig with. Since going Fractal AX8 my life is infinitely easier and I can genuinely say that after a relatively minor amount of tweaking on my computer, there is next to no difference when my rig is A/Bd with the Fractal. I highly suggest it. I go from the AX8 into a power amp into a custom 2x12 which I adore. It's basically 2 vintage Celestion Greenbacks. Fan-bloody-tastic.

Great to hear this even if it's a couple years old. I just bought a POD Go to get my appetite for modelling going again. Looking at an AX8 right now, just don't want to buy something that's obselete already. Is FM3 that much better?
Hello Bret from Spain. I want to buy a digital pedalboard, and want your opinion about ax8 or Headrush, sounds, playbility, easy configuration, etc. I'm amateur 50 years old, and ever analog. Now ax8 is descatalog and i don't know what buy. Thanks
Hi Bergs, great and informative demo as always. Can you answer one question about the AX8.? Can you run a valve amp into it via a Loadbox ? Pete Thorn does this with the Helix and Headrush Pedalboards. Basically I’m coming up to the ‘ last big purchase’ time of life and the AX8, Helix and Headrush are all contenders at the minute. Thanks.
Hey Duncan. Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, if you want to run a real amp into it via something like the X-LOAD or similar, no probs. I wouldn't bother, because the models are pretty darned ace in the FAS Firmware. But you can do that, for sure.
Hello Brett...great video displaying the excellent capabilities and sounds of the AX8! I'm curious though...how do you amplify your AX8...studio monitors, power amp/cab and what interface do you use - thanks!
Great playing and excellent tone, you also do an extremely good job communicating when demoing gear...I appreciate the professionalism you always bring in your gear examples;) I have a question...with your experience and expertise I wanted to see if you might offer an opinion. Recently I've gone from a pedalboard that's based around high-quality tube Marshall/Fender preamp pedals, with this setup I'm not required to use an actual guitar amp at all to achieve true guitar amp tone and more specifically 'Fender/Marshall' type sounds in Live playing environments or recording to a DAW. Recently I've wanted to see what digital modeling has to offer with so many new technologies becoming much more convincing than what's been offered even a few years ago. Without going to a Kemper I first wanted to try the following products...1.) Boss Katana - fun but not exactly what I'd hoped for. 2.) Line6 Helix - much improved amp sounds over the HD500 I once owned and very, very close to what I'd hoped for - and the interface is the best of all the amp modeling devices IMHO. But...I returned the Helix for the next product. 3.) Ampli-Firebox (AFB) - although a small, much more simple pedal that only offers about 20 amp types I found the amp modelling to be even better than that of the L6 Helix (at least to me). I have a variety of pedals I use in conjunction with and that are placed before and after the AFB, such as a Strymon Big Sky, Eventide H9 (setup in a Pre/Post config. to allow placing its effects before/after the AFB)...this is an extremely convincing amp alternative setup, that's easy to carry and is capable of covering plenty of amp type tones. I'm curious...I've never tried a Fractal product and wanted to know what your thoughts were in comparison to the Amplifire modelers? Thanks, John!
Thanks for your kind words. Mine is a labour of love and great fun. I agree with everything you've said here. The Ampli-Firebox is great sounding piece of gear that sadly flies beneath the radar for many. Its models are top-notch and if portability is a concern, it really can't be beat. The Fractal gear notches everything up many bars - model choice, cab choice, interface, computer compatibility, frequent and free firmware updates, effects choice and quality, immediate support from both the manufacturer and the users. I can't fault it and it will always be my first choice. The feature set is the most fully comprehensive out of all the modellers and because of this some find the learning the curve a little steep, but the rewards are great.
Hi 777 - I got my hands on an Amplifire 12 that Burgs used to own apparently so the seller said. I am totally sold on the digital approach. One of the really fun parts is the abilty to buy speaker modelling called IRs or 'impulse response' to add as cabinets. It's freaky good. I got the amplifire 12 for 600 and it will do me for a LONG time. After a bit of tweaking you get all the response of a tube amp live and its easy to do. I run the Amplifire 12 into a Headrush FRFR and I am totally sold on it. Next step AX* but for now...I'm good.
Awesome, I've thought about upgrading to the Amplifire 12...for more 'preset/effects' control than what's afforded with the AFB! In my quest to find a digital amp-modelling pedalboard solution I though I'd end up with a Kemper but, I've found Amplifire's amp modelling was surprisingly good and honestly almost as convincing as my tube preamp pedals. Plus, the idea of carrying just a guitar and a small pedalboard was my intention all along. Thanks for the information!

Yes. Every room is different, likewise the monitoring system. The AX8 provides instant access knobs for all of the major controls and I use them often. I high pass at 100Hz and low pass at 7.5K on the global EQ.
Quite a bit: Input drive, tone tweaks, overdrive gains and levels ... You can't expect to jack two completely different guitars into an amp (virtual or real) and get the same results. So you have to tweak to suit.
Brett Kingman Thanks for the reply. It raises two interesting questions for me. Firstly what are the tone tweaks. Are they generally dialling off treble for singles or less bass for humbuckers? And more interestingly wouldn’t you want two different guitars to sound different?
Strangely your patches seem a bit messed up when I import them into my AX8 running 10.1: the clean presets are fine but the dirty amp is not the JTM45 but a bassguy with extremely low volume. Does anyone else have similar issues?
Hey Brett, Really enjoyed your review thanks mate, I'm thinking the AX8 may be the way to go for church music, I'm always being told " turn it down your too loud ! " one just cant get a valve amp to sound good unless its cranked a bit, with the AX8 I'm being led to believe you can get a good sound at any volume. Is there a web site or anyone ( yourself included ) willing to give a step by step teaching on how to program the AX8 start to finish. Cheers Lee
Sorry, but don't agree. I've had Marshalls, a Boogie and currently have a H&K Grandmeister 36 and I can get my AX8 to sound exactly like all of them in both tone and feel to the point you cannot tell the difference, and with all the effects I'll ever need built-in to boot.
Brian Cullen I have to disagree. But I will admit that when I turn my tube amps on, I get a warm, fuzzy feeling... everything in me tells me I should sell my amps and just use the ax8. But I just can’t...
I tried your preset in a live setting and it is amazing! Thank You!

There's not much lag to speak of these days. Add to that the delays or reverbs that roll into each scene and your set. It's a good thing!

Strangely your patches seem a bit messed up when I import them into my AX8 running 10.1: the clean presets are fine but the dirty amp is not the JTM45 but a bassguy with extremely low volume. Does anyone else have similar issues?
Klaartje Londers same issue here. I haven’t updated the firmware to 10 yet, maybe that’s the issue?
Did you manage to resolve tthis?
Tried to download your patch but it’s not the same as the one you describe here. All the controls are zero and it’s a Bassman model not JTM45...
Thank you)
Hey Brett,
Really enjoyed your review thanks mate, I'm thinking the AX8 may be the way to go for church music, I'm always being told " turn it down your too loud ! " one just cant get a valve amp to sound good unless its cranked a bit, with the AX8 I'm being led to believe you can get a good sound at any volume. Is there a web site or anyone
( yourself included ) willing to give a step by step teaching on how to program the AX8 start to finish.
Cheers Lee
leo777lee Brett posted another video a while back about how to build a preset. Very handy.

How many guitars do you have, electric and acoustic?
More than 10 and less than 100.
Same here! except I have more than 6 and less than 60..and sometimes the number goes up after a heavy night of partying!..
What FRFR cabs are you using?
Atomic CLR's at home. Whatever I can get that's close to them on the road. We fly a lot so hauling them is not viable.
AxeFX? Kemper? I don’t really like the Helix
I’ve owned both but sold the Kemper. They’re both fantastic but I found the AX8 much easier to work with.
The AX8 sounds great but a real amp is a lot better especially in gain.
I disagree entirely, with all due respect.
But I just can’t...
heres a quick question, can i use an amp with the AX8?? i own a few amps and wanted to try these
Hi I'm about to pull the trigger on an ax8. If I'm a plug this direct in front of a combo amp is it ok? Pros and cons?
