I just entered the digital DJing world in addition to the vinyl realm just a few days ago, and I was just getting into the crate organization thing. This vid hit it right on point step by step precise breakdown, and it's very helpful, that's what's up. I'm now a subber of the channel to guide me through this digital DJing realm.
I upgraded from a Windows to a Macbook Pro last week. I'm beginning my transition from Virtual DJ 8 to Serato. This video will definitely make my job a lot easier! Thanks for the information.
matching my crates up the exact way as my HD was the biggest thing that helped. Appreciate you brother! i got madd music BUT wasnt ever really organized
Delete orange Tracks (hold Ctrl an press Delete) also works for PC... I just tried it, I was trying to Delete all of orange tracks for a long time .Thanks man an Bless up from Trinidad...
A few pointes as we go along, and these are universal to crates and management, not just Serato: The power of crates are lost if you're just replicating the folder structure you already have on the disk anyway. If you already have that structure, there's no point in going through the hassle of creating crates. Just use the browser and it's already in that exact structure. The real power of Crates is that you can collect your music separately in one central place, or several places. Like if you have several sources of music, you can have different folders for different sources and drop them in the appropriate crates, so you still have a central place to pick your music from when you're DJ-ing. Right after you mentioned the hassle of disappearing crates you mentioned the backup feature. This is exactly what that backup feature is for. When you got a crate setup you like, save the backup for it somewhere safe and if anything happens, you just need to copy that backup file to the backup folder and it will all be back. Copy that backup every time you make a major change. If you get new music often, make a weekly backup, otherwise make a monthly backup and you're always safe. Another strength of crates is that you may want one song in more than one crate. A SOCA song may fit both in SOCA and in Party. But if you're restricted by having a physical folder on your computer for each crate, you need to create a copy of the song every time, and that means double the space for each song you want in two crates. This can quickly eat up hard drive space and will mess you up when you're DJ-ing and think you've pulled in a song you've previously set up cue points for, when it's a copy of that song that has no cue points. Real kudos for using the Comment field of the META tags. Not enough people utilize this feature. There's a reason why most DJ software has that tab up by default, and you displayed the utility of it very well here. Quick and easy overview of things like which songs you know works for your DJ style as transitions between genres is an excellent use of that comment field. A tip for the renaming of files: When you get to a few dozen songs or more and you realize stuff like "Oh, it's easier for me to see song titles in capitals", there's utilities you can download for free called "Bulk Renaming Tool" or a variation of that name. Many of them are quite advanced and let you search and replace strings or even capitalize every letter in the file names and let you do it for every sub folder of the folder you're currently in. Set it to the main music folder, set it to capitalize names, set it to subfolders and let it run. A lot easier than going through tons of folders and manually renaming a bunch of songs. Also useful if you've used one of those cheaper bulk download services that like to append their own tag to the file name. Just set it to search-replace the tag name for the site with an empty space, and the annoying tag will magically disappear. And to cap it off: Kudos for being a neat freak. I think all DJ's could benefit from being neat freaks when it comes to their crates. You never wanna accidentally drop that empty file reference onto the deck during a live session. ALWAYS keep your crates clean!
Good Video for the New guys to learn... 1 thing i noticed tho you Got a Lot of corrupt files (Lightning bolt) that will cause serato to crash or those files to glitch .. get a program for mac called "MP3 scan + repair" and drag em straight from serato into the program and fix them then re analyze in serato... should fix them... some can't be tho, you'll have to replace those files
Also found running the bolt mp3s thru audacity & importing / renaming it as new mp3 helps too, just remember to delete original from serato library & scan in New version
Omg where were you years ago. I ask on a forum how to organize their music. Reply was "that's the stupid question" You was a BIG help on this. Thanks for the video
hey my man thanks I actually learned something here off your video. My crates are a hot looking mess I'm a newer dj so I been putting my crates off to the last thing I do
Good vid. I’ve setting my crates up in a similar fashion for a while. Alot of DJ used to let iTunes do it and it caused them a headache when iTunes when updates went sour. Another thing I’ll add is for DJs that wanna switch from Serato to Rekordbox or maintain duplicate libraries with both this method makes it a piece of cake outside of setting cue points the majority of the work is done. Plus for if you need to do a set off someone else’s laptop just copy what crates and folders you need for that onto a usb stick and you’re good.
Great Video 📹. Awesome suggestion about using the "Comment" section in Serato DJ for brief descriptions of how to transition to other music/genres. Learned a quick trick from Digital DJ Tips. (For example: Use letter "MWW"-Mixes Well With...) i e: [Energy @ 7 MWW (Song A) Top 40 -or- (Song B) Rap]
Great vid but instead of organizing your music files into folders that reflect your Serato crate it is easier to save the crates themselves. That way you can load the crates into Serato and just direct where on your hard drive the music files are. Serato itself says putting your files into too many folders can slow track load times.
I'm primarily am into hip hop, rap, reggae, funk, beat breaks, disco, ol skool, blues and rnb and I've been looking for a video on how to craft a set, what to play and how to play it (don't switch genres to often, don't jump in bpms and building Entergy these types of things.) please consider creating a video like this. Or if you have or know of any please point me in the right direction.
as far as for trying to track it by year i just make a smart crate for each current year. and i got the 80's, 90's, 70's, in their own respective smart crates.
Hey, I'm just starting out on Serato (from Traktor) and thanks for this video, it was helpful. I'd like it if you could do a demo of the transitions from the soca to the other genres. Also, what's "groovy" and what's "pace"? Could you talk a bit about how you organize your chutney crate and what's a good source high-quality chutney tunes? Thanks!
Heyyy, this is a great tips! Some questions: 1. How much would it affect to the cue points if I relocate the music folders or copy the folders to other storage? 2. Why would some BPMs showed in the column are different from the top panel when we play particular songs?
Also can you PLEASE send some Soca and, any other mp3 pool links that you would recommend? That would be greatly appreciated. Also this vid was MAD funny and entertaining, keep up the good work, you have a new follower.
First off....quite possibly the most helpful "DJ" video I have seen to date (as far as serato etc.). Thank you so much for the info! One question... - What is the main function of, or when would one use, the custom crates? Thanks again for all the info...big, big help! Uncle P
Trying to get more info about Serato...need info about the"Key", do you use it and should I use iTunes..I have Dropbox..and I use Windows (Dell PC) works really good for me...
I feel you bro... you want to have the most efficient direct access to those songs. but serato keeps upgrating its search box and at this point its crazy wish I could go back 3 or 4 updates back. sometimes cant find tracks thats I know i have. I usually add new track into my folder in the music folder but when I open serato it won find them. i do unplug the controller and do a rescand but no luck. what I do is delete the whole crate and re import it but then my creates are out of alphabet order....
Very Good Info. Can you move a crate from below one to above eg. let's say Soca is above Dancehall, can you move the Dancehall crate so that it is above the Soca crate?
I'm an old school DJ, and music is my passion. I have been watching a lot of the new and old school Video's trying to learn and get back out here. I purchased VirtualDJ Pro and practice, now I'm starting to move toward Serato a little slow because it appears to be so advanced. Looking at your Video made me feel very confident. Of course you are well advanced, but as a training for someone in thiscase very new how would you direct me? looking for your support. greatly appreciated.
Hey .. nice video. Can you recommend music sources and/or Dj Pools? Especially for Soca, Reggae (others as well but these are my main genres) ... Thanks!
Bro beautiful video but very important question.. let’s say I’m searching for the grippa riddim, its not coming up. Only way is if i search by the song.. that’s really annoying especially when i really need to find the riddim but don’t know the song in it. I really need your help on this one
I have sub'd and liked this video.. I have similar crates also someone has told me sub genre is helpful too but im unsure of how i should do this. I mostly DJ trap rap
Just a little tip: I know you got plenty of views on this, but I'll mention it anyway. Crates are pretty much the same no matter what software you use, or even if you go old-school and use actual crates with physical discs. The same principles apply. By putting "Serato" in the title and mentioning the program so often, even making a big deal out of it in the intro skit AND the topic introduction, you make it seem like the video is specifically about Serato, when it's about crates. That is bound to cost you a bunch of views from people who doesn't know it's general DJ knowledge you're talking about. I'm only mentioning it because this is the tenth video I'm seeing this morning that does this. I don't know what happened around mid-2017, but all of a sudden every DJ out there suddenly felt the need to name-drop Serato in all their vids...
How do you analyze your crates seeing that you have groovy and pace ...Also I see that you have different years for Soca what I want to know is do you mix up your islands from trini to bajan to grenada to dominica..
This was helpful. Thank you! What if I wanna reorder a song within my crate (sorted by BPM)? Also, on a mac. Which option permanently deletes a song from your overall library vs crate? Is that the distinction between Cmd-del and opt-del?
Informative vid man, I learned a couple neat tips, great job. One question, how did you go about making all your information in all caps? Did you manually do that or is there some way to automate it?
Happy to hear that! Thanks for watching. I literally go in one by one and retype everything myself. I'm hoping there's a better way. If I find anything our I'll let you know.
I like your method of having Folders match your Serato Crates for the exact reasons you mentioned. But how do you deal with songs that belong in multiple crates? Do you keep multiple copies of the mp3 in each Finder Folder? Because otherwise when importing a folder into Serato, it would only end up in the new crate your creating in Serato as opposed to each crate that the song belongs in.
I just listened to your video, and I'm still not clear what you mean by moving files and getting the orange file not found in Serato. I'm not purposely moving files. I will admit I'm a little unorganized, and that's what I liked about your video. I'm trying to become more organized. Also, how do you alphabetize crates in Serato?
Just use a program call Alchimie Sync and it creates the crates for you as per your folder structure.. Much easier.. So you just mange your folders in explorer
Thanks for Ur vid man... My biggest problem, all my folders are on my desktop, once I move them in my music, they all turn to orange in serato , So how do I transfer them to my music n still have them in Serato ..Help Help please....
You don't need to delete the orange files, you can click on files then on the left of that box appears find lost files, all you have to do is drag and drop the orange files onto that box and it will search your pc and reinstate them. before I would delete them I try to load the orange track then it tells you its missing and where its missing from, then I'll go to that folder if a good copy is there delete orange if not reinstate it manually from folders on pc.
How do you organize your music files as you keep downloading new music? Do you create new folders and not add them into the existing folders? Because it might be hassle to find out which have not being imported into DJ software.
I just bought a new external hard drive because the music and data that I stored in a previous USB flash drive just disappeared. Long story short I took the flash drive to a computer shop and retrieved the data and now I’m transferring it onto a new 1 TB external hard drive. The thing is, upon transitioning, I’ve lost my crates. Is there a way to restore my crates in the way I had them before the data crashed? I really don’t want to have create new crates if there’s a way to retrieve the original crates. Please help. Thanks 🙏 Peace ☮️
Hello DJ! Would you help answer this question for me please? The layout of my library is already set in my music folder with my sub crates and sub-sub crates. If I drag and drop the music folder in Serato (All) will Serato create the corresponding crates, sub crates and sub-sub crates for me or do I have to create those crates on Serato and drop songs in each crate/subcrate?
Hey.. where do you download your music where is the best place for music like none stop pternsky.. acapella. . Ect rnb hip hop remixes ext. Where do you download from
Hi, thanks 4 ur vid. Ive gotta question : if u download music in to the folders on the harddrive, how can i setup serato to sync with those directories? example..In folder A i have now 125 songs. But in the A directory on my HD i have downloaded 60 new ones...can serato automaticly sync the folders?
Have a new mac book pro. I installed lacie an extern hard drive to my Pioneer DDJ SX2 Serato DJ pro.I plugged in my Lacie and open up Serato DJ. When I clicked on Lacie in my Serato DJ it does nothing. I do not see my music or folders when I clicked on Lacie. Can you help? This is Leonard
2 years later and your Video is still giving good info. The ctrl-alt-delete hint save me a lot of time thank you
Happy to hear this! Got a lot of new videos coming soon
do either of you have any orange files that wont delete, like theyre stuck? I have 10 that wont leave lol

It's good to see ah trini taking about serato keep it up bro first time I see ah DJ talk about soca that made my day
matching my crates up the exact way as my HD was the biggest thing that helped. Appreciate you brother! i got madd music BUT wasnt ever really organized

My method. All music in 1 folder. Every song. As long as everything is tagged perfectly smart playlists is all you need.

Thanks man, this really helped me a lot appreciate that❤️❤️❤️
Very useful information on file and creats 👍
These were great tips! Thank you
Great tips I just ran into this missing file issue in Serato DJ on my PC Still working on fixing some crates.
MAD TIPS, BLESS UP KING.
This was helpful. Thank you! What if I wanna reorder a song within my crate (sorted by BPM)? Also, on a mac. Which option permanently deletes a song from your overall library vs crate? Is that the distinction between Cmd-del and opt-del?
Good job!!!! Can you do a video on how to mix dubplate? How to tie split songs
just switched to gelato pro and this helped.
If I find anything our I'll let you know.
there is always a way, i assume any decent tagging software can batch capitalize both filenames and tags
@@thedjnetwork There is. Its called MP3 Tag.
Yes more Serator tips

THANKS MY BROTHER THIS DJ PITTY JUST START THIS AND THAT WAS MY PROBLEM WE GOTTA LINK SOON
Thanks so much: I`m working with PC not a Mac: I`m afraid to attempt the deleting process .
Thanks Bro keep the videos coming.
For sure! What videos would you care to see next?
very impressive crate/play list. can i send you a floppy disk to load em all onto for me ???
great job on the channel
I just listened to your video, and I'm still not clear what you mean by moving files and getting the orange file not found in Serato. I'm not purposely moving files. I will admit I'm a little unorganized, and that's what I liked about your video. I'm trying to become more organized. Also, how do you alphabetize crates in Serato?
@djnetwork would you sell a USB copy of your Serato files? Luv the organization much respect...
Fire intro
love this bro keep up the good work
Awesome stuff. Thanks
No problem! Thank you for watching
Just use a program call Alchimie Sync and it creates the crates for you as per your folder structure.. Much easier.. So you just mange your folders in explorer
thankyou so much!!!!!!
for sharing your knowledge.
any rekodbox topic, caming??????
We will definitely look into doing some content for those topics. Any other topics you would like to see covered?
use itch sync works great and updates folders when u add music with a click of a button
I'm trying to learn how to scratch but I haven't been very good at it. Do you have any tips for that?
Yo Good Video... I figured that one out on my own..lol wished I saw this prior.. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for Ur vid man... My biggest problem, all my folders are on my desktop, once I move them in my music, they all turn to orange in serato , So how do I transfer them to my music n still have them in Serato ..Help Help please....
Man great info. Yooo I'm on it. Thanks Bro.
first time on here, liked will be back, enjoyed the vid.
I have my folder music organized like you. If I add more tracks to several folders. How can I update them automatically my crates on serato?
Thanks for the tips mi G
It looks like fun.😊😊😊
Thanks 🙏
Peace ☮️
GOD!!!My broo
Do a search for Itch Sync. Its a java program that I use to automatically add crates by file structure
Hello DJ! Would you help answer this question for me please? The layout of my library is already set in my music folder with my sub crates and sub-sub crates. If I drag and drop the music folder in Serato (All) will Serato create the corresponding crates, sub crates and sub-sub crates for me or do I have to create those crates on Serato and drop songs in each crate/subcrate?
thanks for the video it helped alot
